oh, i see. the "Account" part of the error message refers to the Outlook Express account name. it's not part of the mail server's error message. - Original Message - From: "Ihnen, David" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "'Robert Eric Pearse'" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 13, 2000 6:02 PM Subject: RE: qmail-pop3d error: '-ERR unable to scan $HOME/Maildir' Hm. pffft. again, the answer is in the doc's. ;-) from INSTALL.maildir Here's how to set up qmail to use maildir for your incoming mail: % maildirmake $HOME/Maildir % echo ./Maildir/ ~/.qmail Make sure you include the trailing slash on Maildir/. y'know, i'm starting to like qmail more and more. instead of finding the answers easily and pondering them for hours (like sendmail) the answers are right in the doc's and they're super easy to understand. ;-) pearse - Original Message - From: "Robert Eric Pearse" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Ihnen, David" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 13, 2000 6:25 PM Subject: Re: qmail-pop3d error: '-ERR unable to scan $HOME/Maildir' oh, i see. the "Account" part of the error message refers to the Outlook Express account name. it's not part of the mail server's error message. - Original Message - From: "Ihnen, David" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "'Robert Eric Pearse'" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 13, 2000 6:02 PM Subject: RE: qmail-pop3d error: '-ERR unable to scan $HOME/Maildir' Hm. I'd like to add a question on to James' problems. I'm doing the same thing, my setup is working, but if a user enters a bad password, he gets the message as shown below. Is there really a process crashing? And is it not cleaning up after itself? So this could end up causing problems later? Also, when someone doesn't log in correctly and I get that child crashed message, there is no mention of the connection in the logs, that is not good, someone could hit my server all day using brute force and I'd never know... -ERR authorization failed under qmail-pop3d
I've been running into password authentication problems with my RH 6.2 implementation. Open-ssh does weird things too... but back to qmail. I _HAD_ qmail up and running happily yesterday. The famous line "I didn't change anything and now it doesn't work." Well obviously I have changed something. I have been attempting to complete the Life with qmail documentation. With success yesterday. (Thank you again for your help!) Here's the info I hope is relevant: Telnetting into the POP3 server, fails: [root@mercury bob]# telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Message: -ERR this user has no $HOME/Maildir
I've searched through several qmail archives and saw this question appear many times, but never found a solution that helped me. I've been following Dave Sills "Life with qmail" pretty much to the letter. OK, actually _TO_ the letter. I'm finding that the server happily accepts e-mail on both of the IP addresses and host names I've assigned to the box. It doesn't DELIVER them mind you, but they sit happily in the queue. It would appear as though I definitely have a mailbox type issue. # telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to mercury (127.0.0.1). RE: Message: -ERR this user has no $HOME/Maildir
Thank you! It works! Now the mystery is how did I make that file in the first place? I'm SURE that I followed the instructions in the qmail 'INSTALL.maidir' to create this file. (as shown below) maildirmake $HOME/Maildir echo ./Maildir/ ~/.qmail But the directory now exists, the telnet to the localhost has been fixed too. I do notice that, unlike the tcpserver instructions, it does NOT echo back the users mail directory. Or is that not a normal function of tcpserver under Maildir? To verify what the real deal is, telnet to your server's port, and manually attempt to authorize yourself, so that you can be sure exactly what is being sent, and what comes back. If you succesfully authorize yourself, the problem will be in your mail client configuration. If your authorization fails, the problem will be in your mail server configuration. If you use your standard system password for pop access, and if you have shadow passwords on your system (check for /etc/shadow or the like), checkpassword is unable to read the encrypted password if it is not run as root (and in your setup, it isn't because it will be executed as uid 102/gid 504). You can either delete the entries in your inetd.conf (-u 102 -g 504) or make checkpassword setuid root. The first alternative means that qmail-smtpd will also run as root, in the second, only checkpassword will run as root. Decide which one to use depending on the grade of your security paranoia ;-) I had the same problem when I first set up a qmail server. Hoping to have helped, -- Juergen Kleer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: checkpoppasswd - ERR authorization failed
I'm also using the single-user method on a new mail service I just set up. My system is up and running ok using this method. I've noticed that nobody seems to answer posts on this list which deal with the single-user method, so I'm going to answer, even though I am not very experienced and this probably won't help much. Did you set the path to the popusers file in checkpoppassword.c before you compiled it? You might try using Paul Greg's hacked version of checkpoppassword at least temporarily because it does extensive logging to syslog. At least you will find out this way if checkpasswd is being invoked ok. I tried the telnet methods below on my system: telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. +OK 1500 [EMAIL PROTECTED] user toto +OK pass titi -ERR authorization failed Connection closed by foreign host. I was able to get this method to authorize on my system. I also tried: /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup earth.care2.com /bin/checkpasswd +OK [EMAIL PROTECTED] user toto +OK pass titi -ERR authorization failed I was able to get this method to authorize, but had to add the path to qmail-pop3 and the delivery type, i.e.: /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup earth.care2.com /bin/checkpasswd /var/qmail/qmail-pop3d Maildir as per man qmail-popup. Re: checkpoppasswd - ERR authorization failed
Also, I believe that checkpoppasswd requires that the password in the popusers file be encrypted. Dennis Duval I installed qmail with the Jedi's checkpoppasswd.

RE: Qmail -ERR this users has no $HOME/Maildir
You might need to check the permissions of each Maildir. If a Maildir is in the UserA's home but is owned by UserB then checkpasswd can't find the UserA Maildir. Hope that helps. Did you check the /etc/passwd file to make sure it's pointing to the right dir? Such as /home/whoever. Also, chown the home to that person, chown -R whoever /home/whoever Try those.
