Sounds like the permissions or location of the todo directory in the queue aren't correct. There's probably other problems with the queue as well. Dear List, In a weak moment I promised a charity that I would look into how difficult it would be for them to have their own web based email system. I guess this shouldn't be too hard but as I'm not at all technical I'm hoping you people can help me tell them what they need in terms of software. Their requirements are: In no particular order... 1) entirely web based access to mail with all the usual things like spell check, address book, multiple folder manipulation, filters, attachments etc. They also want to be able to forward mail to any other address on demand. 2) subdomains of their domain created on the fly. ie, [EMAIL PROTECTED] created by the user without the need for an administrator. 3) a really fast, stable and secure system capable of scaling to millions of mailboxes (pretty unlikely...) and tens of millions of messages per day. 4) Cheap! I told them that it could most likely be done entirely with open source software. What would your suggestions be in terms of software? Would qmail be a good base for this system? Which front end do you suggest? My thinking was along the lines of: (don't laugh, I know nothing about this!...) Linux, qmail, mySql, apache webserver, php4, Squirrelmail front end. Does this make sense? Any other suggestions? Or quick. Or maintenance free. There's no such thing as a free web-based e-mail system. There's going to be a substantial investment of time, money, or both--even if free software is used exclusively. And we haven't even considered h/w costs. 4) Cheap! I told them that it could most likely be done entirely with open source software. Cheap is relative. A turnkey commercial implementation of such a system might cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. A cheap homebrewed version might only cost tens of thousands. Would qmail be a good base for this system? Sure. Which front end do you suggest? This might be a weird request, but I am wondering if anyone would be willing to send me virus infected emails to test my setup... all I have here is the Anna, and my AV stops that... but if a few of you would send me different ones, maybe ones that would get by the AV scan... ??? Hi, I setup freebsd4.2with qmail in my intranet, I used 192.168...IP address; and I have a DNS server with 202.96...IP address to provide name service to dialup users(outside), the FB and DNS are connected with a router. I hope dialup users could send and receive mail.When they dialed up, they could receive mail smoothly, but the sending was very slowly, althoughit still works. The dialup user automaticly got an 202.96...address. I was not sure where is the problem, the DNS, qmail, or router? Someone said I must assign my FB an legal address, was that true? Please get me some explain and how to resolve the problem. Thanks a lot. zbeinet

Ok, first I'd like to say I pretty much know jack about Qmail But wait, I am not hopeless! I installed Qmail on a 650Mhz PIII, 9GB SCSI, 128 RAM, running Linux 6.2, the server is located at dialtoneinternet.com I followed the instuctions, and installed qmail in the standard /var/qmail directory... This partition is only 1gig, I guess the stock Linux setup... My problem is I sent out over 48,000 individual emails to my optin list (no spam, spam is bad!) and it took about 6 hours to finish up... The emails where no more than 3KB in length each. The server is pretty much dedicated to just sending out emails, there are no other users on this machine, and the only web traffic is very very light duty I've looked throught the Qmail.org site but its all greek to me... no real good information for me there Can some one please tell me what do I am adding 2000+ optins a day, and in another month I will more than double me current subscriber base I know Qmail can do what I need it to do, I just need to know how to do it :) Thank you, -Rick

That seems to speed it up for a lot of people. Are you using big-todo? 48000 messages pumping into the queue in short order would seem to indicate this would be a good idea. Are you logging with multilog? Logging through splogger/syslog can choke a busy qmail server, reducing the mail throughput by an order of magnitude. Are logs and the mail queue on separate physical disks? That can seriously help qmail's performance if the server is extremely busy. I've looked throught the Qmail.org site but its all greek to me... no real good information for me there On the contrary, excellent information is there. There's a whole section on large servers. Re-read it all, and follow all its links. Repeat until you are enlightened. Can some one please tell me what do I am adding 2000+ optins a day, and in another month I will more than double me current subscriber base I know Qmail can do what I need it to do, I just need to know how to do it :) If you want to become a qmail expert in under a month, you have your work cut out for you. My situation is as follows: We have am inernal net here with a Redhat Linux 6.2 Server. This server is our DNS, firewall and fileserver, all in one. The Server has two network cards, one with an internal address, say 192.168.1.3, and one with an official address say 24.3.19.73 - this is my birthday ;-) The server is connected to our ISP via DSL and the connection is always open. Now I have to set up qmail on this server and I just can't figure out how this should work. I have followed all the instructions in the source distribution to install and do the minmal configuration. The server shoud be named smtp.uscreen.de for smtp and mail, or pop3.uscreen.de for pop - or should I use IMAP - I don't know. All I know is that the server needs to be up and running on next monday. Can anyone direct me to a poit where there is a good description on how to set up qmail from scratch??? The information on http://qmail.mirrors.Space.Net/top.html weren't too helpfull. All I want to know is - where do I have to set up the mail servers forwarding the mails to other networks - for example if I'd want to send mail to this list from my workstation over our own mailserver; where can I configure the pop-accounts for incoming mail and so on. You're probably running qmail-smtpd, which will accept E-mail and place it in the queue
("not yet preprocessed"), but qmail itself (qmail-send, qmail-clean, qmail-lspawn,
qmail-rspawn) isn't running, to process messages in the queue. Fix this by running
qmail-start (see Life with Qmail for details). You can verify whether qmail is running
by
using ps -elf or ps -auxw (depending on your system) and looking for the above ...send
..clean ...lspawn ...rspawn processes. If they're not there, qmail isn't running.

When I stop and run qmail script (in /etc/rc.d/inet.d/), I got the following error: "supervise:fatal:unable to start qmail-smptd/run: exec format error". Can you help me to fixe this error? PS: I use Linux RedHat6.2, desactivating all inetd.conf line in order to use smtpd, pop3 over tcpserver. In qmail script I adding only entry for smtp and pop3as mentionned in LWQ. I would say you've got a typo in your qmail-smtpd run script. Either download a new copy from Dave Sill's site (rather than trying to type it manually), or post your current script here so we can see what's wrong with it. thans a lot at first. (1)Is ldap use the qmail-default to send other host After it got the realmail account locate,but how it do with the pop3? (2)How about ldap-Auth ,cdb-auth and database-auth. any suggestion is welcome

Hi, I had the same problem when trying to start pop3, so I had to call a friend to setup it. please help me with Courier-imap!
Hello all, I am puzzled by what is happening when retrieving mail through courier-imap. I connect to my Maildir remotely and I know that there is no mail in my Maildir, but yet I am getting 24 duplicate messages back. Where are these messages coming from? I tried to connect to another user's Maildir and I got back 8 duplicate messages (not the same as my messages). I don't have any messages in /var/spool/mail/ and I am certain that when I send mail to the Maildirs, that they are going into there proper mail directories. Any ideas anyone? Thank you all!

Okay, I'm trying hard to close my open server.. Am having some probs, and I hope I can get some help.. I've been following the instructions at http://www.palomine.net/qmail/relaying.html (and some other sites I could find) as well as I possibly can, but I'm having some probs. The popular advice is to use ucspi-tcp-0.84 and so I went and downloaded it, followed the instructions to install, and am consistently getting an error.. I try to execute: tcpserver -R -x/etc/tcprules.smtp.cdb -u -g502 -u502 0 smtp and I get back: tcpserver: fatal: unable to bind: address already used Do you have any ideas? I'm stumped. Argh.. nothing's ever easy. And ORBS just emailed me saying I've been added to their list. Great. :-( Thanks a lot for any assistance.. Regards, -Reuben

Its because your already listening on port 25.
