Re: [qmailtoaster] Upgrade faild help needed

2007-06-05 Thread Harry Zink
Very interesting, I am getting the exact same errors regarding failed
dependencies when I attempted an upgrade the last few times (doing it
with qmailtoaster plus' qtp-menu).

Essentially, while trying to build the various packages in the
sandbox, I get the same error of failed dependencies around control-
panel-toaster. Is this an issue of the upgrade script not properly
installing the proper dependencies, or what's up with that?

Aliases and Forwards are now the same thing. Alias was used to refer to
forwarding a message to a local address, Forward for forwarding to a
remote address.

Since the interface allows for forwarding to a mix of local and remote
addresses, it didn't make sense to keep the two as separate menu items.

[qmailtoaster] Connection Slow With MS Outlook

2007-06-05 Thread Gabriel Lai
Hi all,

I'm encountering slow connection connecting to QMail server with MS Outlook,
I've no problem with Mozilla Thunderbird.
Anyone has this problem?

But, there isn't any problem with Local Network Users, but when connected thru
VPN, then it's slow... the mail that I tried is only 35kb.

What is the default connection timeout for QMail? SMTP & POP3.

Pls help.

Wish I could do this - I'm limited by what the kickstart schema allows
me to do; I could remind users to set it upon first boot I guess.

Yep, they violate the license. It's a Debian based install, and they're
installing their own patched binaries. Bernstein only allows unmodified
source code to be distributed so that you know you're getting his
bug-free (but featureless as well) code. QMT adds some patches to the
source during the RPM rebuild, thus satisfying the license he has set forth.

- any planning to release qmt-iso for x86_64 ?
Nope. I only use x86 machines myself. Since I wrote this mainly for
myself, I'm only going to release what works for me. Sorry.
If someone wants to hire my company to produce a x86_64 ISO, then it
will be up to them if they want to release the finished ISO or not.

- do you have release schedule plan??
I am suggest
if there are many / major upgrade on qmailtoaster / centos, the new
version 1-2 months after previous release.
if there is only little / minor update on qmailtoaster, the new
version release 3-4 months after previous release.
Release plan is as follow: when I get to it . I do this in my
spare time - I have a consulting business that keeps me very busy, and a
child on the way (just found out it's going to be a boy yesterday).
As such, my clients come first. After the baby is born, don't be too
surprised if I don't release any more updates.

- register qmt-iso project at centos.org

- domain qmtiso.com is up I am waiting for the website
- and mhonarc, yes I am asked it. I will write the tutorial later.
The qmail-queue linking is supposed to be fixed in the next release of
Toaster. Since there is a wait on this, I do plan on fixing it in the
updated release for the Cent 4.5 packages. There's also a couple other
minor things that I will add in, such as the option to install the
fetchmail patch and install Webmin. Nothing too major though.
I will look into registering the project with CentOS. I don't make it to
their site too often, so didn't even realize they had a spot for
branches like this. Thanks for that.
And yeah, while I did put up qmtiso.com, I haven't had time to work on
the website yet. I'm hoping to make it look like the
www.qmailtoaster.com and devel.qmailtoaster.com sites, but we'll see how
that goes.
Thanks for the suggestions! Keep them coming! It's nice to know what
others think (or think is wrong), and get ideas for future releases.
Ultimately the ISO is just an install for CentOS that downloads the
Toaster packages and installs them for you. I had never originally even
thought of adding additional things like MHonArc or anything else.
That's all driven by the user's suggestions and comments.

Fernando,
yes - 0 disables... if you use vqadmin to put something non-0 in those
fields when creating the domains (or go to modify them if already created)
the options should appear in the qmailadmin window. at least that was my
experience.

to all whom this information might be usefull:

the "0" actually disables the feature and prevents it from appearing in the
qmailadmin menu...

what I tried in a test domain (and actually it worked :-)) was delete the
"0" by using the vqadmin-toaster interface. Now all features are available
in the qmailadmin interface.

You have to put numbers in the fields you listed below - I've had the same
problem. 0 for unlimited, and then it will work as you expect.

i had same thing on my initial install... did you actually put numbers in
for the limits of accounts, aliases, forwards, autoresponders and mail lists
when you created the domain with vqadmin? i put real numbers in those and
now everything looks normal except i only have a forwarders option and not
an aliases option (both to look at and create). i can use the forwarders to
the same effect, but it does not look like the docs say it should and i do
not have the option to create them (aliases). it is puzzling...if anyone
has a clue? (my whole diatribe here could be blowing smoke!)

I'm encountering slow connection connecting to QMail server with MS Outlook,
I've no problem with Mozilla Thunderbird.
Anyone has this problem?

But, there isn't any problem with Local Network Users, but when connected
thru VPN, then it's slow... the mail that I tried is only 35kb.

What is the default connection timeout for QMail? SMTP & POP3.

Pls help.

I use webmin to manage my Linux machine. Webmin does allow for
management of qmail although with my limited knowledge of qmail I have
basically only used it to examine and manage the queue.

Thats good to know. Like I said, it's been 4 years since I tried it, but
when I tried to change some of the ways Qmail handled email through it,
Webmin brought my whole email system to it's knees. I haven't tried since.
Maybe if someone has a test system they wouldn't mind doing some test
work on, that would help decide on whether or not certain modules were
enabled or not

SuSE may not be the right choice because future versions of the
Toaster may concentrate on FC/CentOS for simplicity.

There is too much developer time used to keep all these platforms, and
not enough of a userbase on it.

Re: [qmailtoaster] Large Maildir problem

2007-06-05 Thread Alexandre Shima

Hello Helmut,

I'm running QmailToaster on a HP DL380 G3 Server (Dual Xeon 3.0, 2 GB RAM,
6x 73 GB SCSI 10K RAID 5, 64 MB w/battery) with RHEL4 ES (I had the same
servers configured with RAID 10 - same problem).
The filesystem is EXT3.
I'm trying to backup with HP Dataprotector 6.
I'm trying to keep another system (stand by server with same configuration,
connected to a gigabit LAN) updated with RSYNC.

The big problem is that it takes too much time to copy/sync the Maildir.
RSYNC takes about 8 hours just building the file list.
I have tried to copy data with scp, and I had the same poor performance.

I have read a lot about problems with EXT3. It looks like it does not have a
good performance with large structures like my Maildir directory, and that
ReiserFS or XFS will do better in this case.

I'm also considering to move everything to a storage, with the GFS
filesystem. At least I think I'll be able to load balance these servers
easily.

Thank you.

Alexandre

Re: [qmailtoaster] Large Maildir problem

2007-06-05 Thread Erik A. Espinoza

Make sure that you have dir_index turned on in ext3.

Type tune2fs -l /dev/?da? | grep features

For example, if /home is /dev/sda5 on your system type tune2fs -l
/dev/sda5 | grep features

If this feature is not turned on, small file performance on ext3 is
dirt slow . . . However turning it on does not speed up directories
that already exist. You will basically have to do a backup/restore.

Thanks,
Erik

Hello Helmut,

servers configured with RAID 10 - same problem).

I'm also considering to move everything to a storage, with the GFS
filesystem. At least I think I'll be able to load balance these servers
easily.

Thank you.

Don't worry about the "unknown" part. That's just the remote computer,
since you're not doing DNS checks when contacting them.
Finding your messages in the Spam folder is not uncommon, especially
with a new mail server. If you move it to your regular inbox and report
it as NOT SPAM, in the future it should not be put in the spam box.
As far as the other providers I know AOL is especially strict with
reverse DNS checks - if you don't have a reverse DNS entry, they bounce
your message. They may do it silently now. In Yahoo, give it a few hours
to make it's way into a folder, or for you to get a bounce message from
them explaining why the message bounced. Once you work through a few of
these headaches with the Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, Earthlink, etc., providers
you usually won't have to again.

I'll look for the meaning of these settings. Do you see any problems with
them (maybe a non desireable feature turned on)?

Thank you!

As a quick workaround you could make a partition level backup (like
partimage) .
If you could not expose your server to a downtime you could consider
using lvm shapshot backup .

I don't know if this problem coul be also caused by the
"--disable-big-user-dir" compile option with

wich the vpopmail-toaster is compiled .

From the readme of vpopmail:

-- START

Virtual domain user directory structure
Vpopmail uses an adaptive directory structure based on a state file
".dir-control" which is automatically managed by the core vpopmail api
functions "vadduser" and "vdeluser". For sites with 100 users or less,
all user directories are stored in the virtual domain directory. For
sites that go above 100 users the adaptive directory structure goes into

effect. The basic idea is to break up the user Maildir directories across
multple directories and sub directories so that there are never more than
100 user directories in a single directory.

The default directory setup allows for 62 directories in 3 levels and
100 user directories per directory. The total number of user directories
is equal to 100 + (62 * 100) + (62 * 62 * 100) + (62 * 62 * 62 * 100) = over

24 million directories. This should be more than sufficent for any site
and probably goes beyond the technology of directory structures.

If you are going to be storing large numbers of user directories, make
sure you set your file system to have a higher than normal percentage
of inodes.

Vpopmail will automatically create these directories and sub directories
as needed and populate each directory with up to 100 user accounts. As
soon as a directory reaches 100 users it will create the next directory
or sub directory and store the new users directory there.

Look in the source code release directory contrib/ for a contributed
directory reorganization program .

-- STOP --

I don't know (the vpopmail docs is'nt very clear about this ) if the
--disable-users-big-dir effectively disable the above

dir structure .

Maybe with this dir structure turned on is much more simplier for rsync to
build a list of file , ad so to speed up all the backup process .

It seems to exists a script that can be re-arrange your user base dir to
let it

compliant with the directory structure .

Is your domain dirs splitted as descrive above , or is in the canonical
form /home/vpopmail/domains/$domain/$user ???

Home it helps .

The cvd files are part of the clamav distribution, which is why we
include them. Until they are pulled, we will continue to distribute

2007-06-05 Thread Basura
Nothing to do with the gateway. I´ll try to explain it. Many ISP mail
servers are configured to check the revers of an IP address to validate
an incomeing email with the mail host and domain.

When you set up your server, you give it a host and domain. In my
example I will use mailserver.yourcompany.com

> mailserver.yourcompany.com (this name MUST EXIST on a valid dns server)

if you do a
> resolveip mailserver.yourcompany.com

you must get something like
> IP address of mailserver.yourcompany.com is 11.22.33.44

To check for revers, do
> resolveip 11.22.33.44

you must get THE SAME PAIR in reverse order
> Host name of 11.22.33.44 is mailserver.yourcompany.com

In your case, this last answer will be something like
> Host name of 11.22.33.44 is whoknows.probablyyourISP.com

Talk to your ISP, the one who give you your IP addresses and tell them
to change the reverse of your IP to mailserver.yourcompany.com

I did that yesterday and worked perfectly.
