[qmailtoaster] Current simscan problems due to clamav issues
Dear all! I have seen the same issues as you have seen today. Attackers send e-mails containing PDFs causing DoS problems. German readers might read https://www.heise.de/security/meldung/Jetzt-patchen-Angriffe-auf-Viren-Scanner-ClamAV-3951801.html Everyone should update to 0.99.3 asap. This is openSUSEs current log for the latest clamav version covering several issues: - Update to security release 0.99.3 (bsc#1077732) * CVE-2017-12376 (ClamAV Buffer Overflow in handle_pdfname Vulnerability) * CVE-2017-12377 (ClamAV Mew Packet Heap Overflow Vulnerability) * CVE-2017-12379 (ClamAV Buffer Overflow in messageAddArgument Vulnerability) - these vulnerabilities could have allowed an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition or potentially execute arbitrary code on an affected device. * CVE-2017-12374 (ClamAV use-after-free Vulnerabilities) * CVE-2017-12375 (ClamAV Buffer Overflow Vulnerability) * CVE-2017-12378 (ClamAV Buffer Over Read Vulnerability) * CVE-2017-12380 (ClamAV Null Dereference Vulnerability) - these vulnerabilities could have allowed an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. * CVE-2017-6420 (bsc#1052448) - this vulnerability allowed remote attackers to cause a denial of service (use-after-free) via a crafted PE file with WWPack compression. * CVE-2017-6419 (bsc#1052449) - ClamAV allowed remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted CHM file. * CVE-2017-11423 (bsc#1049423) - The cabd_read_string function in mspack/cabd.c in libmspack 0.5alpha allowed remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted CAB file. * CVE-2017-6418 (bsc#1052466) - ClamAV 0.99.2 allowed remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted e-mail message. -- Johannes Weberhofer Weberhofer GmbH, Austria, Vienna - To unsubscribe, e-mail: qmailtoaster-list-unsubscr...@qmailtoaster.com For additional commands, e-mail: qmailtoaster-list-h...@qmailtoaster.com

My question was really: is 1.28 gigabytes a reasonable setting for this value? That just seems awfully high to me, especially given that the default setting in the toaster is 64 megabytes (6400 vs your 128000) - that’s a factor of 20 increase. Again, unless I’ve got an off-by-a-digit issue somewhere, but I’m pretty sure I’m reading that correctly. 64 megabytes is the recommended setting from “Life with Qmail” and “The Qmail Handbook”, so I thought I was safe raising it to 128k, or even 160k, but over a gig seems like an awful lot. Does it really need to be that high? I'm using 5400 as soft-limit on 64 bit systems; I have never had any issues with that settings. -- Johannes Weberhofer Weberhofer GmbH, Austria, Vienna - To unsubscribe, e-mail: qmailtoaster-list-unsubscr...@qmailtoaster.com For additional commands, e-mail: qmailtoaster-list-h...@qmailtoaster.com

Do as proposed by Dan. I have tested it here with vpopmail 5.4.25; adding and deleting a domain-alias using vdeldomain works nicely without touching the original domain. Re: [qmailtoaster] Could anyone resolve this webmail issue
Dear Manikandan, There are issues with squirrelmail and newer versions of PHP, read http://squirrelmail.org/; I'd recommend to update to a newer version from the squirrelmail snapshots; Or try out roundcubemail, which is actively developed and offers the users a much more modern interface including UTF-8 functionality. I didn't have any issues related to dovecot/roundcubemail, the config is really simple. I have scripts to transfer squirrelmail's address-books to a roundcubemail installation if you need. Best regards, Johannes Am 21.01.2015 um 07:36 schrieb Eric Broch: Manikandan, I can't be sure that php is the problem, the question is, did squirrelmail work fine before the upgrade from php-5.3 to php-5.5? That said, I think that the only QMT rolled rpm that depends on php is squirrelmail, but I'm not positive about that either. I think you can check this using 'rpm -qR .qt.package'. You can downgrade one of two ways: 1) Remove php (with its dependencies) with yum remove command, or 2) use the yum downgrade command. If you had a virtual server with COS6 to practice on that might help with gaining experience for you. This (downgrade) is territory that I've never tread, but here's the man page entry for the downgrade option of yum with a link tutorial: downgrade Will try and downgrade a package from the version currently installed to the previously highest version (or the specified version). /*The depsolver will not necessarily work*/, but if you specify all the packages it should work (and thus. all the sim- ple cases will work). Also this does not work for installonly packages, like Kernels. downgrade operates on groups, files, provides and filelists just like the install command. http://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2010/yum-downgrade-packages-on-fedora-centos-red-hat-rhel/ I think I would simply uninstall php-5.5 with its dependencies and reinstall php-5.3. You might be able to look in your rpm log and find out what was installed at the time of the upgrade to php-5.5. Please tell us something about the installation. Is the dovecot-server within the same network as the clients? I understood, you have one Outlook holding more than hundred mailboxes? Or are there more installations having only one ore some mailboxes? I suppose, you have a networking problem somewhere between your server and the clients. Do you use a self-signed-certificate? Three things can be wrong: * your certificate has not been installed correctly * your root-certificate is not installed * the server does not contain all information needed to verify the chain. You may test your certificate using openssl verify -CAfile root-CA.crt mailserver.test.com.crt And you can verify you installtion using openssl s_client -showcerts -connect mailserver.test.com:993 Hope that helps! Re: [qmailtoaster] Re: toaster with dovecot2
Hello Eric, sorry for the late response... Am 07.01.12 20:59, schrieb Eric Shubert: Thanks for the input, Johannes. On 01/07/2012 09:25 AM, Johannes Weberhofer wrote: The plaintext password is needed for CRAM-MD5 authentication (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CRAM-MD5 ). I'm a little confused by this statement under Weaknesses: quote Weak password storage: Some implementation require access to the users' plain text passwords while some others (e.g. dovecot) use the intermediate step of the HMAC process to store a sort of MD5 of the password (i.e. inner MD5 and outer MD5 combined). /quote This seems to contradict what Timo said about cram-md5 not being supported with encrypted password stores. Johannes, are you able to clarify this? Following Dovecot's documentation at http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/CRAM-MD5 dovecot stores a special hash of the password to support CRAM-MD5 in /etc/cram-md5.pwd. To support this, users passwords must be converted to the hashes onnce. Addidionally, a hook must be implemented to the vpopmail password utility, to store this form of passwords on each password change. Qmail could use those hashes, too - which would be a big improvement. Unfortunately that causes some major changes in the qmail/vpopmail codes... I suggest to remove CRAM-MD5 authentication and plaintext password storage. Instead, usage of TLS/SSL communication should be enforced. Enforcing secure authentication with dovecot can be enforced with configuration parameter disable_plaintext_auth = yes, which is the default. I don't think that use of TLS/SSL (encrypting the entire message) should necessarily be enforced, although I agree that it's advisable. Perhaps you'd like to request/discuss this feature on the dovecot list. (hint) Enforcing secure authentication on the outbound side (smtp) is not possible at the moment ttbomk, although secure authentication is certainly possible. It the enforcement part that's not able to be done by the server. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this. Perhaps someone would like to look into writing a patch to do this. It would seem to me to be a fairly simply addition. It certainly deserves an enhancement request ticket at the least. Johannes, will you please create a ticket for this at http://bugs.qmailtoaster.com/ ? As many users are using the same passoword on several systems, hacking an QMT server having stored the plaintext passwords allows a easy takeover of all the mail-accounts and other accounts using the same password. I agree with you here whole heartedly. Thanks for your help with this, Johannes. Perhaps QMT has plain text passwords in vpopmail (as well as encrypted) for cram-md5 support. Storing passwords in plain text is not a good practice though. Indeed it has, at least in my vpopmail db I have: | pw_passwd | char(40) | YES | | NULL | | | pw_clear_passwd | char(16) | YES | | NULL | | I wonder what other QMT users would think about dropping storage of plain text passwords as well as cram-md5 in a future release of vpopmail-toaster. Thoughts anyone? So I assume that the way cram-md5 is supposed to be used is comparing it to the pw_clear_passwd field (but obviously at least with Dovecot this does not happen)? Or is there any other reason for the pw_clear_passwd field to exist? I honestly don't know the answer to that. I'm guessing that Timo mentioning cram-md5 doesn't work with encrypted passwords means that he's presuming that the --enable-clear-passwd option isn't set. I wonder what the 'best' way of configuring this would be. The plaintext password is needed for CRAM-MD5 authentication (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CRAM-MD5 ). I suggest to remove CRAM-MD5 authentication and plaintext password storage. Instead, usage of TLS/SSL communication should be enforced. As many users are using the same passoword on several systems, hacking an QMT server having stored the plaintext passwords allows a easy takeover of all the mail-accounts and other accounts using the same password. Clear text passwords are bad in security point of view I agree. But it has been useful for checking the password when a user calls and tells that (s)he has forgotten the password (Jake's QControl frontend shows the plaintext password), but I guess a better practice would be creating a new password in these situations. So if we really do not need carm-md5 support for anything I would vote for dropping the support for it and the plain text passwords. Thanks Peter. I'm with you on that. I know that some enterprise type admins have chosen to not use QMT simply because passwords are stored in clear text. I'd like to see QMT be in a better position to be used in enterprise environments in the future. -- Johannes Weberhofer Weberhofer GmbH, Austria, Vienna - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. I'm virus/spam filtering the mails already on the backup-servers (e.g. 10.0.0.2), so I have set a special tcp rule on my main mail server: 10.0.0.2:allow,RELAYCLIENT=,SPFBEHAVIOR=0 This rule disables all kind of virus/spam and SPF chekcing whenever the mails come from my backup-server. Re: [qmailtoaster] Rotating apache logs
Logrotate is included in most distributions. Simple configuration files can usually be added to directory /etc/logrotate.d/ and get executed then. To recreate the logs, a Apache reload is sufficient, a restart is not necessary. Re: [qmailtoaster] Virus problem
I highly recommend to force the users to use Submission-Port 587 instead of SMTP, which forces senders to authenticate against the server. Most spam-senders do not have credentials for sending. In case they have, you can simply locate the spam originators (and block them) Johannes Am 29.07.2009 22:01, schrieb Natalio Gatti: On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 4:50 PM, Aleksander Podsiadly a...@westside.kielce.pl mailto:a...@westside.kielce.pl wrote: W dniu 29.07.2009 20:39, Natalio Gatti pisze: I saw your post, but using a proxy does not seem to be a solution for me. I agree to 100%. I have never looked deeper into the sources of vqadmin - but the problems could result out of changed interfaces in the current CLI usage / database syntax which is not covered by the old vqadmin version, so I guess that older versions does not improve things. Re: [qmailtoaster] Qmailtoaster updated packages!
Hi! As I had the same issue on opensuse, I had a look at the spec (a modified one I'm using on OBS). The following section in the spec-file fixes the problem: ### %pre if [ -d %{_defaultdocdir}/%{name}/ReleaseNotes ] ; then rm -rf %{_defaultdocdir}/%{name}/ReleaseNotes fi ### The problem is, that in versions before the current release notes were shift into the ReleaseNotes diectory; in the new version, the files go to another directory while ReleaseNotes is a text file. When the RPM-installer tries to rename the unpacked, temporary file to it's real name the error occures. Re: [qmailtoaster] : Keep a copy of send and received email for whole domain
Try to set 2) .qmail-default to | /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox This is the recommended behaviour and ensures that a) the mail is not processed (and using resources) by any filter before being deleted and b) that senders will be informed when sending mails to non-existing accounts. In many European countries it is also an legal issues not to delete received (E-)Mails: Mails accepted for delivery must be delivered (except when infected by viruses). Re: [qmailtoaster] : Keep a copy of send and received email for whole domain
Bounce setting on qmt actually rejects accepting mails at SMTP level instead of bouncing the message. You are right, bouncing messages (esp. for non-existing recipients) can cause backscatters: it can make your server to a spam-relay which bounces spams or viruses back to faked senders who are the final messages' receipients. Johannes Tek Support schrieb: Jake, I'll try changing it to bounce and I'll get back to you. But doesn't the bounce create more traffic? What I've thought happens is that we get the original spam for a non-valid account, we send out a bounce, and then that bounce gets bounced back to us because the sender didn't really exist. I know that somewhere the bounce gets stopped, but is it after I've sent mine, or is it after they've sent their bounce? Kind of seems like a waste of bandwidth and resources if 2 bounces get sent, or even if I'm bouncing to a non-valid original sender. As for the wiki instructions - I have mis-understood them. It says to use [EMAIL PROTECTED]:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as the recipient. It seemed to me that this meant I could send it to anyone even a user on the same domain. It might be helpful to say what you told me here, do not use a valid domain for the recipient or something like that as I never would have understood that from just the example. And are there any instructions or suggestions on viewing this new non-valid Inbox from sqmail or some other reader - so I can validate whats going on since the [EMAIL PROTECTED] domain doesn't really exist? Perhaps sqmail will let me login as that user since it has the domain and user in vpopmail? I'll try that too. The situation in Germany/Austria is, that you have too keep all messages for legal users except when you refuse the messages on SMTP level. When you want to delete some messages after accepting them, the owner of the mailbox must explicitly agree to that. I'm not completely sure on archiving. In Germany (and I think in Austria, too), you have to store Mails which are relevant for your business-cases in arevision-safe, digitally signed form between six and ten years (an not-free Article describing the situation in Germany can be ordered at http://www.heise.de/kiosk/archiv/ix/2005/2/96_kiosk ). As it is very hard to decide what is business-relevant, I would try to filter out as much as possible on SMTP-layer and archive the rest of the mails. Yes, they will; both mail-servers must be able to receive mails via internet. Re: [qmailtoaster] How to de-activate tls for an ip?
I had a similar problem once, when the sender's DNS server was badly configured and didn't answer SPF records queries; qmail got timeouts and the messages couldn't be sent. You could test that using dig txt DOMAINNAME. Johannes P.V.Anthony schrieb: Hi, Currently we are having a problem receiving emails for a company's email server. Hi Luis, I have tested the suggested procedure on one of my (remotely controlled) servers and didn't see any issues. The command rpm -e --allmatches --nodeps --justdb zlib-devel zlib will only uninstall the rpm entries, not the files; therefore there is no reason for any program using the zlib library to fail. Before you uninstall the package you should download your distribution's original zlib.rpm file to the local filesystem for re-installation using rpm -Uhv --replacefiles zlib.rpm after removing it first. In the worst case, when you have uninstalled the zlib completely (not only the rpm entries), the running ssh connection will stay running because it mapped the library into memory before. As long as you don't restart sshd, you will stay connected. But most applications (including rpm) will deny starting. Then the only solution would be to copy back a local backup of the /lib[64]/libz.so* files. But never! restart the system without the zlib library files, that _will_ fail. I have tested this procedure, too. I think the suggested procedure should work with a very low risk, but one never know ;-) Best regards, Johannes Weberhofer Luis Lopez schrieb: Ufff no good then. I have searched the wiki for TLS and for other relevant items and only in CentOS 4 install do I find instructions on setting up my own TLS. But they are somewhat wrong as the directory it shows does not exist. Can someone point me to the correct instructions for setting up TLS with my own name so the error no longer comes up. Re: [qmailtoaster] Authentication to bypass spam checks
The answer to question 2) is quite simple: Only authenticated users can relay via this port. Additionally usage of TLS is suggested. Qmailtoaster is prepeared for it, but each client must enable it; for security reasons (to force man in the middle attacs) each client should not only prefer but force TLS to be used. Best regards, Johannes Weberhofer Anil Aliyan wrote: pretty smart question John, I also would like to hear the answer for it from the experts. - Original Message - From: Tek Support [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Sent: Friday, August 08, 2008 8:37 AM Subject: Re: [qmailtoaster] Authentication to bypass spam checks Hi all, I have a few question. Before I learned of this port 587, my only option was to disable spamhaus. And all I did to disable it was to remove it from my /var/qmail/control/blacklists file. So, the other day I needed some addition reporting and I remembered the toaster plus, so I downloaded the Repo and ran the yum install for it. I then also decided to run the spamdyke filter. So, now that I've realized that port 587 is available for my users to send on, I went back to add the spamhaus. However, it's no longer in the /var/qmail/supervise/smtp/run file. It would appear that spamdyke has removed it. So I have 2 questions: 1) Are spamdyke and spamhaus compatible? Why would or why does spamdyke remove blacklist from the run file. Here are the before and after. ---Begin--- ---End--- 2) Since I've just found out that port 587 is available, and 587 does not run spamhaus the dynamic ip checker, then what is keeping a spammer from trying to use this 587? I mean I'm a little confused. If my port 25 won't allow any non-authenticated users to send smtp (presuming it's not an open relay), then why would I even need port 587? I understand the need to have 587 if I'm using spamhaus on port 25, and 25 is now blocked to my dynamic users (workers from home). So it seems a bit unnecessary to have both ports. And why couldn't a spammer start sending spam to my users on 587 - if it even works that way, which I'm not sure yet if it can? Qmailtoaster is a pretty popular thing, so someone, somewhere would certainly try port 587 in order to get around spamhaus wouldn't they? Thanks for your time on this, I'm not trying to be difficult, only trying to understand how and why. Try to use the submission port for sending; I guess, the different anti-spam stuff needs to do DNS lookups when you send via SMTP. Re: [qmailtoaster] Forwarding Mails to another server (smtproutes)
Hello Eric, thank you for suggesting recordio! While debugging, I have recognized that on the receiving server the certificate.pem file was not readable for the smtp process. I decided to fix that and - voilà - the problem on forwarding mails is gone! Now I can forward the mails from one qmail-server to the Submission port of another qmail-server. Johannes Johannes Weberhofer, Weberhofer GmbH wrote: I have checked the sources and the qmail-remote-auth patch is definitely included. It can be found in qmailtoaster-1.3.1.patch.bz2 which patches qmail-1.03 to netqmail-1.05. I'll see to find time to test with recordio. Johannes Eric Shubert schrieb: Hmmm, that's interesting. I use smtproutes with authentication quite a bit with dyndns.org's outbound mailhop relay, which uses authentication. I've used this toaster feature for about 2 years now. So I'm pretty sure the patch is in there. What's maybe not working is when the toaster is on the relay (receiving) end. That I haven't done. Dan, can you put recordio on either end of your test and see what's going on? Dan McAllister wrote: I have done some testing... I don't know if the QMail-Remote-Auth patch is a part of QMT, but if so - then it is not working. What this patch is /supposed /to do is to allow the addition of username password info in the smtproutes file. The idea being, if I place in my smtproutes file a line like: *:mail.myserver.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] mypassword * which is actually 2 fields longer than a normal smtproutes line (the extra 2 lines being a username (which, in the case of QMT is an email address) and a password, then all my outbound emails should be routed to the server *mail.myserver.com* and when the connection is made, SMTP_AUTH is supposed to be used, using the credentials provided. Any chance someone better at this than I am could figure out how to add the QMail-Remote-Auth patch??? (Or figure out why it isn't working?) I [personally] think that this patch should be a permanent part of the Toaster... any comments? BTW: I tested this by adding a valid username/password entry to a server, then sending a test message, then checking the send log -- which indicates that the connection is still proceeding without the authentication (exact snippet from the log file is: *delivery 29: failure: User_and_password_not_set,_continuing_without_authentication.*) Cheers!
