Re: [QUAD-L] Questions People ask us Quads.

2005-08-02 Thread Jkrocks

Why is that such a stupid question? Most paraplegics and some
quadriplegics can transfer themselves. The beautician or the owner of the
business might know this and wanted to find out to see if he/she needed to make
any adjustments to his/her station. The first time I went to the dentist
he thought I would be able to get into his room because his other patients with
wheelchairs had no problem. I was not able to get in without him moving
the dentist chair because my wheelchair has a longer wheelbase than standard
because of my size. Now, when I arrive for my appointment the
dentistchair is movedout ofthe way and I back right in with no
problems.

I have a sign in the back of my van that says "Handicap driver, please be
patient" because of all the drivers that are in a rush all the time.
Believe it or not this sign works very well. I have not been Honked at
since I put this sign in my window three years ago. Before I put this sign
in the window I washonked that at least once per day. We as
quadriplegics and paraplegics also have to be "patient" with able-bodied people
because they have no idea what our life is like and what we go through.
When I make a reservation at a restaurant I tell them that I'm in a power
wheelchair and should be put somewhere where I'm out of their way because I
cannot fit underneath a table. If they put me in an aisle way and I'm in
their way that is their problem because I will not keep moving out of the way
for them. Every restaurant that I have gone to has told me that they
appreciate the heads up so they can makeadjustments if needed. I
have never felt rushed or uncomfortable in any restaurant that I have gone
to.

People ask me. I tell them that I got a rare illness 4 years ago that
left me paralyzed and they ask will I get better. That's no so silly
except for the people that I have gotten in detail with and I tell them that
there hasn't been any improvement in over 3. I have even had nurses ask me
if I can stand up. UGH NO I'm paralyzed is what I think but like
Billy, I don’t want to come off rude so I just tell them nicely as with the
getting better question.

It's a funny movie at times but it's very dramatic and serious too.
If you can't find it to rent you can buy it on Blockbuster.com.

I don't mind questions about my injury. If people don't
know anyone with a spinal injury, they probably don't know much about it. There
are so many reasons people use chairs, so many ways people get paralyzed. You
see people listed as quads who can walk with a walker, but don't have perfect
control. Being paralyzed doesn't always mean "complete".
Plus, anyone who doesn't know much about it can get
misinformation from watching TV movies where everyone who is paralyzed ends up
walking because "They have such courage".
I say to the non disabled... "Ask Away" it's the only way
to learn. The more they learn about us, the more they will see we are just like
them... only different :-)

Hi JT,

I'm sorry that this feedback is getting to you so late. First, let me
welcome you to the Quad-List. As Lori says you've already received some
good responses so I'll just add mine to them.

Every SCI case is different, just as every person is different, but one
thing most of us will agree on is that the first couple of years after a
SCI are the hardest. It may not be that life gets better but you'll learn
to deal with life in a better way.

I was white-water rafting on the Upper Salt River in '76 when I broke my
neck at C4-5. I was 22 and had been married for 5 years. We had two sons,
5 2 1/2, and I was managing the second largest car-wash in Phoenix
(Freeway Car Wash, Black Canyon Highway Camelback Rd.) at the time. Part
of my pay package was an insurance policy on me and my family, but the
place had been sold to a new man in Jan. of '76, and he had changed
insurance carriers, and to save money the new policy went into effect on
May 01 and the old policy expired April 15. I should have been on top of
that but I was running the place, keeping the books straight, and doing all
of the hiring firing, and that little gap of two weeks went unnoticed
until I broke my neck April 25! Well, the old company felt real bad but
they couldn't do anything to help, and the new company's policy hadn't
taken effect yet so they felt real bad but they couldn't help, either.
Life sure has a sense of humor!

I did my rehab at Good Sam, and took the ACT and with the help of VR I
started taking classes at GCC. I was taking the PT's advice and was
pushing myself around campus in a manual chair. I made the Dean's List the
first semester and was on my face most of the time letting my bottom heal
through the next semester. I went back the next semester and made the
Dean's List again, and spent the next 6 months letting the flap surgery I
had to have done on my bottom heal. With all of that time to think about
my priorities my wife and I decided that it would be better if she went to
work and I stayed home with the boys.

By this time life was starting to seem ''normal'' and things were looking
better. I was staying out of the hospital, had taken a position on the PTA
Board at my boys school, and my wife was working days. Life seemed like it
would be okay but going in a new direction. I took over running our home,
getting the boys through school, and keeping my wife involved, etc.

Now, I know everyone is different, so by when I noticed that my wife was
having trouble sleeping and showing other signs of depression we sat down
and had a good long talk. After talking with a councilor we were able to
see that my wife felt like she wasn't contributing to our family, and that
because we had married young she felt that there wasn't anything that she
could look at and get the satisfaction that she'd accomplished that on her
own. She felt like her dad had taken care of her until we married and I
had taken care of her since then. I knew she was an equal partner in
everything we had, but knowing something and changing the way someone feels
are very different things.

We discussed different ideas but I could tell that if things continued the
way they were going that in a year, maybe two, what she was feeling as
dissatisfaction would turn to anger, and eventually hate, and it would be
directed toward me. So, in early '85 we came up with a plan that while I
knew would be hard on me and our boys in the short run, would be the best
thing for us all in the long run. We decided that we would sell our home
and she and our boys would move back to central MI where she grew-up and
get a place that she felt was her own. I moved back to Lincoln Park, a
suburb of Detroit. I would be far enough away so she would feel that she
was going it alone, but close enough that my boys could come to visit when
we needed to see each other. The plan was for her to take two years and if
she didn't think she had made the right decision we'd get back together and
go on from there.

By late '86 she had succeeded in creating a new home and life that she felt
she could call her own. The boys had adjusted to the changes and I decided
that she would be okay on her own, so I made the decision to move back to
AZ where the weather was better suited for me. The boys would stay with
Mom and spend the summers with me. I had an Uncle that lived in Arlington,
TX that asked me if I wanted to spend a few weeks with them before going on
to AZ. I agreed and was staying with them for the start of the New Year,
1987.

The tooth next to it they was able to basically sand down as it wasn't that bad, and my gum was given quite a few stitches (which I managed to knock out hours afterwards.doh!)

Only prob was, where the tooth had grown bad anyway, the root of the tooth was pratically sitting on one of the nerves at the bottom of my jaw, which unavoidably got damaged whilst taking the tooth out so I've now got numbness on my cheek, tip of tongue and corner of lip which they said is going to be temporary, but not to sure weather that's true or not.

I find it boring to keep repeating a story about a car wreck I don't
remember. I enjoy making up more exciting stories. The adults seem to love the
one where I fell from a 7th floor window while hiding froma woman's
husband.
I have told people that I'm highly contagious and unfortunately, It's
too late, they were exposed when I said "hello'. People are obviously more

Hi Stunt,

I don't like to be used by others for them to make money, either. The site I gave lists lawsuits filed, so if Mr. Moore settled before the suit was actually filed, it wouldn't be listed.

As far a any lawsuit being filed against Mr. Eastwood just because he has money, the outcome of any lawsuit is determined on its merits. That's the way our legal system works. It may not be perfect, but it is better than most people on the earth live under.

I do understand that while Google doesn't retrieve everything, but do a quick check and you'll find the sites run as much against Mr. Moore's movie as forit. I think a fair reading would give both sides of the issues you say the media ignores. I'm not a tabloid reader so I'll take your word on their coverage, but both sides of the issue are in print.

If I am not allowed to visit a resort for the simple reason that I don't live in the community it is in, that is wrong. Either AB or a person with a wheelchair should have that right. If I am not able to get into a court room or Federal building, then they are doing the same wrong. But two wrongs don't make it right. Change must be made across the board. In the 'Left' and in the 'Right.' To stand against change for what is right,is wrong for both sides, AND the middle!

IMHO --If we as a Country are not moving forward, we are moving in the wrong direction, and all the effort that you and your fellow Veterans give to this Country would be lost. I pray thatnever happens.

Moore settled that one out of court very quickly. It is difficult to find any mention of it (due to extreme limited coverage) and having changed my HD, I no longer have the org link. But it was to a Colorado newspaper (local story) with a headline something like; "Local victim from Columbine sueing Film Maker of Bowling for Columbine" (to the best of my recollection).Google doesn't retrieve everything, and while I can recall the gist of the name of the article it has been a while (when the movie first released). The person who wrote what you're calling an article, wrote an opinion piece. To give it any more legitimacy would be a mistake. If anyone has a vandetta, the writer should look into a mirror. As far as my leftist media reference, I was talking about all the tabloids that fawn over the meathead moores of the world,!
  and not
holding them to the same standards as those they crucify whom they don't agree with. The Acadamey has shamed itself for calling Bowling for Columbine a Documentory and the honoring it as the worlds best for that year. And where was the leftist press??? Honoring him instead of exposing him as a fraud. As for Eastwoods desire to maintain the style of his resturaunt... do you think it is highly likely that he was targeted just because he is a celeberity and somebody smelled money?Personaly I find that offensive. To try to tie it to his motive for making the movie is also offensive. You see, I don't like being used.IMHO there are too many lawyers making themselves rich using us.And we have more important issues than forcing someone who doesn't even have a quad living in his small community to meet ADA standards when many of our courts and Federal buildings have that same fault.Sometimes a molehill isn't important.!
 And
no, this wasn't about endorseing Eastwood, my opinion was towards the motivation and conclusion of the writer.IMHO BS is BS and it doesn't do any org good to spread it.Instead of accusations w/o merit, a simple critique would have sufficed. We need allies not enemies.Personally I liked the movie and if I'd suffered that high an injury, a friend who came to visit me 2 mo into rehab would have been asked to keep his promise made when I first became a stuntman.Stunt Hi Stunt, When you say this is an "opinion," if you're referring to the term "Vendetta" used in the title of the article, then I agree, that is an opinion. Mr. Eastwood's legal issues with the State of CA is a matter of public record. -- http://thor.prohosting.com/stunttnt/http://tnthompson0.tripod.com/

Hi Larry,

I have8 main different sets that I go through 30 times each. I do them while still in bed. Arms straight over my head up then brought downand back up, armsout to the side brought in meeting (I try to think I'm wrapping my arms around a beach ball), arms at my side bringing each one up to my chin, arms down brought up straight overhead (the reverse of set one so the breathe is let out on the opposite move, arms bent with hands at my chin then arms pushed out to the side and back in, arms straight out to the sidemaking circles, arms straight up overhead doing circles, arms in a bent position with a running movemen pump. Each move is made in time with a breath and with wrists cockedwhile I hold and relax. The longer I've worked on these moves I've found I'm able to work the muscles connected to the ones I can control (stomach, back, etc) and the faster I move the faster I breathe to keep my heart rate up. I wish t!
 his was
clearer but if you're really interested I'm sure we can figure out a way to show you how each set is done.

I hope this helps some.

life gets better but you'll learn to deal with life in a better way.I was white-water rafting on the Upper Salt River in '76 when I broke my neck at C4-5. I was 22 and had been married for 5 years. We had two sons, 5 2 1/2, and I was managing the second largest car-wash in Phoenix (Freeway Car Wash, Black Canyon Highway Camelback Rd.) at the time. Part of my pay package was an insurance policy on me and my family, but the place had been sold to a new man in Jan. of '76, and he had changed insurance carriers, and to save money the new policy went into effect on May 01 and the old policy expired April 15. I should have been on top of that but I was running the place, keeping the books straight, and doing all of the hiring firing, and that little gap of two weeks went unnoticed until I broke my neck April 25! Well, the old company felt real bad but !
 they
couldn't do anything to help, and the new company's policy hadn't taken effect yet so they felt real bad but they couldn't help, either. Life sure has a sense of humor!I did my rehab at Good Sam, and took the ACT and with the help of VR I started taking classes at GCC. I was taking the PT's advice and was pushing myself around campus in a manual chair. I made the Dean's List the first semester and was on my face most of the time letting my bottom heal through the next semester. I went back the next semester and made the Dean's List again, and spent the next 6 months letting the flap surgery I had to have done on my bottom heal. With all of that time to think about my priorities my wife and I decided that it would be better if she went to work and I stayed home with the boys.By this time life was starting to seem ''normal'' and things were looking better. I!
  was
staying out of the hospital, had taken a position on the PTA Board at my boys school, and my wife was working days. Life seemed like it would be okay but going in a new direction. I took over running our home, getting the boys through school, and keeping my wife involved, etc. Now, I know everyone is different, so by when I noticed that my wife was having trouble sleeping and showing other signs of depression we sat down and had a good long talk. After talking with a councilor we were able to see that my wife felt like she wasn't contributing to our family, and that because we had married young she felt that there wasn't anything that she could look at and get the satisfaction that she'd accomplished that on her own. She felt like her dad had taken care of her until we married and I had taken care of her since then. I knew she was an equal partner in everything we had, but!
  knowing
something and changing the way someone feels are very different things. We discussed different ideas but I could tell that if things continued the way they were going that in a year, maybe two, what she was feeling as dissatisfaction would turn to anger, and eventually hate, and it would be directed toward me. So, in early '85 we came up with a plan that while I knew would be hard on me and our boys in the

I had a sore around 6 months after leaving rehab. The only reason I got
one then, was that I didn't have a catheter, and was frequently wet.
Since then, I've got a catheter, and no more sores (30 years
post).
One thing that helps me out is that I'm an incomplete, and I feel
pressure. When I've been sitting too long, I get real uncomfortable, and
my leg spasms start acting up. So, I just listen to my body, and go lie
down when my legs tell me to.
Also, I'm continuously (or nearly) moving in my chair (leaning from side
to side, or front to back), which probably helps a lot in not getting
sores.
Good luck in not getting any pressure sores; it is possible :)
