Re: [QUAD-L] Using bigger fonts and Re Mistaken identity

Hi Lori,I enjoyed the larger fonts and big print, I don't have my
computer set up in larger print because, I had trouble seeing everything on my
computer, but I probably had it set up wrong.  I like larger print, if they
are available.

  bigger fonts.

In fact, the last three or four years that I have gone to the library to

When I mentioned that to my sister [who also has no problems with vision

My doc is very nice.  I met him through the wound center.  His

see if I could see him there and they said they'd have to get back to me like
they don't want me there so I am going to call my doctor about it on

I have been writing Stacy privately about this and told her the exact same thing about having a Medicare home health agency nurse come out every day if necessary.  In fact, many of them have specific "wound care nurses."   But she says that they will not do that where she is [only a few days a week].  If it is doctor ordered I don't know how the home health agency can get away with not providing what she needs especially with the intensity of her problem.

But it has also been my experience with these home health agencies ... that they do not "put out" any more than THEY deem necessary and, for some reason, the doctors do not have the backbone to stand up for the patient but they believe the home health agency!  It makes me livid!  Especially because it can save the government so much money by NOT having to resort to a nursing home or other type of facility that can oftentimes make it worse.

I have been praying for myself as well as for her and many others with these ongoing problems.

I pray that this heals quicker than expected for her.

Hi Stacy,

I am so sorry that your wound is getting worse.  When I had my flap surgery my wife did the wet-to-dry packing, but I also had a nurse come out each day to check on it.
As far as what you can do now...you do have Medicare, correct?  When I get an open wound, my Home Health Care nurse will come out every day if needed.  Home Health is covered by  Medicare so get your doctor to write-up the orders for daily care from a wound nurse.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  Stay strong.

There was a lot of drainage to the flap where the incision was made so the doctor takes out a staple to allow that drainage to come out.  It gets worse.  I now have a larger hole in my butt than I had before.  It's a different one because it pulled apart.  I'm now dealing with a 5cm long and 5cm deep wound in the back of my leg that is putting in more pain than the other sore ever did.  So what do I have to do? Wet to dry and wait for it to fill in.  Nursing will only come a few times a week now and less each week.  It hurts too bad to touch it myself so I guess back to the hospital I go.  A nursing home most likely and God knows for how long.  I'm at a loss and don't know what to do.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so how did you get the care for the dressing changes if you stayed home.  Medicare won't pay for daily nursing care.  I'm concerned about the healing time and my check being taken away after I am there awhile.  This will not be a quick healing process at all. If I am in a facility more than a couple/few months, they take the check to offset the costs, leaving me to fend for myself.

I am pissed off as hell that I got this flap surgery to only have it be replaced by a larger and more painful wound.  I didn't think there could be more pain involved but I was wrong.  There is no flap to fix this flap.  I just have to wait and hope it heals sometime soon otherwise more time off of school, more depression, and who knows what else this new wound will bring with it.

Lol, no, sorry. wax paper wouldn't work either. We could begin with
maggots then slap a chaw of tobacco on it, I just didn't wanna scare stacy.
lol I honestly believe it would work better than any wet to dry BS.

I stick with the roll of white wrapping paper. It is made with a
bleaching process that makes it relatively clear of bacteria. When I use the
microscope I don't see any bacteria growth on it.Even after
contaminated bacteria deasn't multiply on it like it will on a telfa
pad. If it bothers you to use it then ignore it. Wet to dry anti-bacterial
dressings will usually kill tissue, not promote growth. You will be back
for more surgery. I can't say I heal up fast but I haven't stayed in bed
because of a sore since '78 when I spent 5 months playing with wet to drys and
resulted in surgery that required another 6 weeks and I healed much faster
than I do now. Stacy, I would try anything to keep from staying in bed. I
don't know what would heal your wound fastest but please don't give up on
remedies that allow you to have a life.try miracle mist on the wound and bag
balm on areas that are carrying weight while it heals.
The very first book I ever read about wound care began with, "don't let
the wond get too wet or too dry." i got the book from a doctor that prompty
prescribed batadine wet to dry twice a day.

Whatever you try remember to get pressure off of it. good luck

  Dear stacy,
Doctors say my advice is crazy but it works for me.
Don't use wet to drys. these cause the wound to get too wet and then
become too dry. Both are exactly what you do not want. use very small
amount of mild anti bacterial salve. (if you can get regranex, it is
great, but it is so hard to get people that can use it and not introduce a
new infection, esp. nurses. The only sterile thing you ask of them and
they will ruin a $400 tube on the second shot.)  Get some thin paper.
Not gause and not typing paper but like bakery wrapping paper to cover the
woumnd when you must sit on it. Any ointment, even vaseline will holl
hold it in place. (it breathes and it keeps out debris). Never pack
the wound. As often as u can use a small fan to circulate air by the
wound. i wrap my fan with cheesecloth to catch any dust. You don't want it
to dry out completely but you want it to be comfortably dry and eventually
form a scab. You don't need a nurse but an intelligent person helps alot.
My ades do it in spite of state laws. When u get up, take a foam pad and
place it in ur chair seat. After a few hours get out and have your ade cut
away the area that has drainage on it and a little extra. This way you
will have the cut out where you need it.
If your drainage is really excessive, make up 1/4
strength dakin's solution. 21 parts water to 1 part clorox with a pinch of
baking powder. Wet some very thin gause and place it against the tissue
then use the fan to dry it. after an hour get rid of it and let the
fan do its thing for another hour if you can stand it. this can be done 3
times a day for a week. A lot depends on how much you can take. Remember,
your mental health is as important as the wound. Get out of the bed and go
  out!

If you can take being off that wound, and the doctor
considers it a candidate for a surgery, just remove any dead or at
risk tissue and transplant tissue from the front of your leg. You can
  even get skin from th

[QUAD-L] Audio books

2006-06-24 Thread Lori Michaelson

YUP!  I like listening to audio books as well!  Either alone or with my husband.

We have hundreds and hundreds of them on the computer in MP3 format so that I can have any one of many popular ones to stick into my MP3 player and listen away!

But many times they put me to sleep ... so I still enjoy reading at my 'over the bed' table in the evenings [regular books -- with and without big fonts].

Then in 1999 I got another one not as bad, at Kessler used Regranx (sp) and it healed up VERY FAST. GREAT stuff but it cost $700 for a tiny tube. Medicaid paid it to.

I can't remember if Tony lives in Orlando.  If so ... Tony ... do you remember seeing it covered in the news?

Even know Dr. G. "supposedly" found the answers to her mysterious death ... there were a lot of questions my husband and I had that did not add up and completely jive with Dr. G.'s findings and final report.

John,Can magic mist be used on sores internally.  I have only used
on superficial areas, because I have had no sores, since I purchased, but I
wanted to have on hand just in case. for my last sore .  Bag balm can only
put on skin that is not open? I had trouble finding, and I noticed the other
day, they sell at Wal-Mart, and it is on the pet supplies and food department of
the store.  I thought that was rather strange.  The wound care
center had me use fibefill, and it seemed to work well for me.  It was cut
and put inside the wound and covered with a sterile gauze instead of telfa pad
for some reason they wanted to use gauze. fiberfill apparently caused tissue to
grow.  I was also drinking arginine, which was most to help something, that
a person on the Internet told me about, who was a biologist.  The wound
care center also recommended, also extra protein (you can buy in a powder form
from drugstore or discount store) and my rehab doctor gave me a prescription for
zinc 220mg twice a day.

Lol, no, sorry. wax paper wouldn't work either. We could begin with maggots
then slap a chaw of tobacco on it, I just didn't wanna scare stacy. lol I
honestly believe it would work better than any wet to dry BS.

I stick with the roll of white wrapping paper. It is made with a bleaching
process that makes it relatively clear of bacteria. When I use the microscope I
don't see any bacteria growth on it.Even after contaminated bacteria
deasn't multiply on it like it will on a telfa pad. If it bothers you to
use it then ignore it. Wet to dry anti-bacterial dressings will usually kill
tissue, not promote growth. You will be back for more surgery. I can't say
I heal up fast but I haven't stayed in bed because of a sore since '78 when I
spent 5 months playing with wet to drys and resulted in surgery that required
another 6 weeks and I healed much faster than I do now. Stacy, I would try
anything to keep from staying in bed. I don't know what would heal your wound
fastest but please don't give up on remedies that allow you to have a life.try
miracle mist on the wound and bag balm on areas that are carrying weight while
it heals.
The very first book I ever read about wound care began with, "don't let the
wond get too wet or too dry." i got the book from a doctor that prompty
prescribed batadine wet to dry twice a day.

Whatever you try remember to get pressure off of it. good luck

Dear stacy,
Doctors say my advice is crazy but it works for me. Don't
use wet to drys. these cause the wound to get too wet and then become too
dry. Both are exactly what you do not want. use very small amount of mild
anti bacterial salve. (if you can get regranex, it is great, but it is so
hard to get people that can use it and not introduce a new infection, esp.
nurses. The only sterile thing you ask of them and they will ruin a $400
tube on the second shot.)  Get some thin paper. Not gause and not
typing paper but like bakery wrapping paper to cover the woumnd when you
must sit on it. Any ointment, even vaseline will holl hold it in
place. (it breathes and it keeps out debris). Never pack the wound. As
often as u can use a small fan to circulate air by the wound. i wrap my fan
with cheesecloth to catch any dust. You don't want it to dry out completely
but you want it to be comfortably dry and eventually form a scab. You don't
need a nurse but an intelligent person helps alot. My ades do it in spite of
state laws. When u get up, take a foam pad and place it in ur chair seat.
After a few hours get out and have your ade cut away the area that has
drainage on it and a little extra. This way you will have the cut out where
you need it.
If your drainage is really excessive, make up 1/4 strength
dakin's solution. 21 parts water to 1 part clorox with a pinch of baking
powder. Wet some very thin gause and place it against the tissue
then use the fan to dry it. after an hour get rid of it and let the fan
do its thing for another hour if you can stand it. this can be done 3 times
a day for a week. A lot depends on how much you can take. Remember, your
mental health is as important as the wound. Get out of the bed and go
out!

If you can take being off that wound, and the doctor
considers it a candidate for a surgery, just remove any dead or at risk
tissue and transplant tissue from the front of your leg. You can even
get skin from there if you need it. Talk

[QUAD-L] Using bigger fonts and Re Mistaken identity

2006-06-24 Thread Lori Michaelson

Hey John,

Actually, I have been using a big sized font for quite a while now [to friends and family] and will sometimes use it here in my posts.  My vision is just fine but I think it is just so much easier on the eyes to read bigger fonts.

In fact, the last three or four years that I have gone to the library to check out a book ... I always go to the "Large Print Books" first.  They are usually for the vision impaired but, for me, it just seems so much more comfortable in the eyes to read that way.

When I mentioned that to my sister [who also has no problems with vision either] ... she began to enjoy checking out the large print books for the exact same reason.

And I have carried it into e-mail.  When some folks use a font that is so teeny tiny to read ... it is frustrating and I often overlook it.  You know what I mean? and then they put it all into one paragraph and *sigh*.  Different strokes for different folks.

I also have everything on the computer [from file manager to our browsers] set up so the font is a bit larger and crisper to read.

NOW, WHEN SOMEONE TYPES IN ALL CAPS it has been my experience that they think they are trying to be heard better.  LOL

Am I the only one who enjoys a bigger font either on the computer or reading a book?

Dave,

My nightmare came true.

What is the Medication you carry for AD
  called???
  Charles Belliveau <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I don't post often. But AD is by far the worst pain I've ever had,
so hope this can help someone.  For me all initial AD
were caused by not being able to empty my bladder. But once I get a bad
case of AD, it seem for the next few weeks many things can trigger AD.
Like a semi-full bladder, or during my bowel program and one very
annoying one is just transferring to bed and lifting knees/legs to
get my pants off, if not done very slowly and gently would trigger AD.
We did an in hospital test with the medication "adalate" not sure of
spelling. Not a very fun experiment, as I was going into hospital
(outpatient for the evening) to trigger AD. This medication can be
very dangerous as it lowers the blood pressure very fast.  It
doesn't solve the cause just reduces the symptoms. In my case the cause
at this point is more my body's sensitivity to AD. It was painful but it
worked. Now I always have some with me.

For me after a bad case of AD, the actual headache can last hours
and I feel like shit for a day or two. Not to mentioned being prone to
AD for the next few weeks. If it's a milder one then it may only last
for a few days.

One other thing I find very annoying about AD is that beside AD
mode, my blood pressure is low to the point were it can be very
uncomfortable. Oh well, just my two cents.

That sounds like AD type thing your having Dylan. It can kill
you. You need to isolate it and get some blood pressure meds so you u
don't stroke while figuring it out. Just curious, did you have a
traumatic brain injury when you broke your neck? My tbi will cause a
seizure similar to AD but it won't respnd to me sitting up. Make sure
they are aware that elevating your upper body helps. the stroke is
usually a few minutes ahead of the heart attack. You shouldn't panic
but you need to check, your bowels, then bladder, and finally check
for a source of pain. It sounds like you have a pain source. I'm told
those darn sores are extremely painfull. You should also ask to have a
blood presure med that you can keep with you, that will
bring down your BP very fast. There was some stuff made back in the
50's for high BP, but its hard to find. It brings ur BP down
fast. (so fast that normal people had problems using it, but us
paralyzed people can use it dead on for AD) I'm on other heart meds
now so I haven't had any in years. I'm sorry I don't remember the name
of it. Rick is right on about keeping your stool soft. An impaction
  can mess you up, too.
Congrats on the 14 yld. You have much to live for. Peace and

Lol, no, sorry. wax paper wouldn't work either. We could begin with maggots then slap a chaw of tobacco on it, I just didn't wanna scare stacy. lol I honestly believe it would work better than any wet to dry BS.

I stick with the roll of white wrapping paper. It is made with a bleaching process that makes it relatively clear of bacteria. When I use the microscope I don't see any bacteria growth on it.Even after contaminated bacteria deasn't multiply on it like it will on a telfa pad. If it bothers you to use it then ignore it. Wet to dry anti-bacterial dressings will usually kill tissue, not promote growth. You will be back for more surgery. I can't say I heal up fast but I haven't stayed in bed because of a sore since '78 when I spent 5 months playing with wet to drys and resulted in surgery that required another 6 weeks and I healed much faster than I do now. Stacy, I would try anything to keep from staying in bed. I don't know what would heal your wound fastest but please don't give up on remedies that allow you to have a life.try miracle mist on the wound and bag balm on areas that are carrying weight while it heals.
The very first book I ever read about wound care began with, "don't let the wond get too wet or too dry." i got the book from a doctor that prompty prescribed batadine wet to dry twice a day.

Whatever you try remember to get pressure off of it. good luck
john
P.S. My crappy cure works for me.

Dear stacy,
Doctors say my advice is crazy but it works for me. Don't use wet to drys. these cause the wound to get too wet and then become too dry. Both are exactly what you do not want. use very small amount of mild anti bacterial salve. (if you can get regranex, it is great, but it is so hard to get people that can use it and not introduce a new infection, esp. nurses. The only sterile thing you ask of them and they will ruin a $400 tube on the second shot.)  Get some thin paper. Not gause and not typing paper but like bakery wrapping paper to cover the woumnd when you must sit on it. Any ointment, even vaseline will holl hold it in place. (it breathes and it keeps out debris). Never pack the wound. As often as u can use a small fan to circulate air by the wound. i wrap my fan with cheesecloth to catch any dust. You don't want it to dry out completely but you want it to be comfortably dry and eventually form a scab. You don't need a nurse but an intelligent person helps alot. My ades do it in spite of state laws. When u get up, take a foam pad and place it in ur chair seat. After a few hours get out and have your ade cut away the area that has drainage on it and a little extra. This way you will have the cut out where you need it.
If your drainage is really excessive, make up 1/4 strength dakin's solution. 21 parts water to 1 part clorox with a pinch of baking powder. Wet some very thin gause and place it against the tissue then use the fan to dry it. after an hour get rid of it and let the fan do its thing for another hour if you can stand it. this can be done 3 times a day for a week. A lot depends on how much you can take. Remember, your mental health is as important as the wound. Get out of the bed and go out!

If you can take being off that wound, and the doctor considers it a candidate for a surgery, just remove any dead or at risk tissue and transplant tissue from the front of your leg. You can even get skin from there if you need it. Talk to more than one doctor. The skin on ur butt is not what it use to be  It is thin, not as elestic and heals poorly. I buy cheap pillows to put in my bed when I must spend time on my side. I'm just afraid that if I don't get out of bed, one day, I won't ever get up again.

Love and Peace,
john

Hi Stacy,     I am so sorry that your wound is getting worse. With Love, CtrlAltDel aka DaveC4/5 Complete - 30 Years PostTexas, USAStacy Harim <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: My nightmare came true. So what do I have to

If I am in a facility more than a couple/few months, they take the check to offset the costs, leaving me to fend for myself.       I am pissed off as hell that I got this flap surgery to only have it be replaced by a larger and more painful wound.  I didn't think there could be more
pain involved but I was wrong.  There is no flap to fix this flap.  I just have to wait and hope it heals sometime soon otherwise more time off of school, more depression, and who knows what else this new wound will bring with it.     Stacy

Like a semi-full bladder, or during my bowel program and one very annoying one is just transferring to bed and lifting knees/legs to get my
pants off, if not done very slowly and gently would trigger AD. We did an in hospital test with the medication "adalate" not sure of spelling. Not a very fun experiment, as I was going into hospital (outpatient for the evening) to trigger AD. This medication can be very dangerous as it lowers the blood pressure very fast.  It doesn't solve the cause just reduces the symptoms. In my case the cause at this point is more my body's sensitivity to AD. It was painful but it worked. Now I always have some with me.      For me after a bad case of AD, the actual headache can last hours and I feel like shit for a day or two. Not to mentioned being prone to AD for the next few weeks. If it's a milder one then it may only last for a few days.     One other thing I find very annoying about AD is that beside AD mode, my blood pressure is low to the point were it can be very uncomfortable. Oh well, just my two cents.

It can kill you. You need to isolate it and get some blood pressure meds so you u don't stroke while figuring it out. Just curious, did you have a traumatic brain injury when you broke your neck? My tbi will cause a seizure similar to AD but it won't respnd to me sitting up. Make sure they are aware that elevating your upper body helps. the stroke is usually a few minutes ahead of the heart attack. You shouldn't panic but you need to check, your bowels, then bladder, and finally check for a source of pain. It sounds like you have a pain source. I'm told those darn sores are extremely painfull. You should also ask to have a blood presure med that you can keep with you, that will bring down your BP very fast. There was some stuff made back in the 50's for high BP, but its hard to find. It brings ur BP down fast. (so fast that normal people had problems using it, but us paralyzed people can use it dead on for AD) I'm on other heart meds now so I haven't had any
in years. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of it. Rick is right on about keeping your stool soft. An impaction can mess you up, too. Congrats on the 14 yld. You have much to live for.
