Hey...

For those of you who post regularly (as well as those who do not or just
lurk) I was wondering if you all could tell the rest of us how long you have
been on this list?

I found it in the latter part of 1995 and never unsubscribed except for six
months when we were living in temporary quarters at one time around 2000 so
it has been 12 1/2 years for me or so. During the last 12 1/2 years I have
told at least four people about this list because they had not heard of it.
They know who they are. :-)

Anyway, it would be refreshing to see how long y'll all have been on the
list.

Happy new year to you all!

2008-01-02 Thread Joan Anglin
I can honestly say that I am very happy with my life. It certainly helped
that I was 51 when I broke my neck, because I already had a full life so I
did not have as many regrets that I had missed many opportunities. I think I
have more appreciation of each little thing that happens that I did before I
broke my neck.

I would not choose this, but I am determined to live and enjoy my life for
as long as God allows me to.

I hope that you find peace and happiness in your future.

[QUAD-L] Cold? I would suggest these!

2008-01-02 Thread Lori Michaelson
For those of you who are out there in states that are bitter cold (I see it
is barely in the teens in Chicago today) or get cold in the house like I do
even though I live in southern Arizona... I'd like to make a suggestion.

My husband bought these for me for Christmas. He found them the least
expensive on eBay. They're perfect for gals or guys!

Prior to nine years ago... fashion was very important to me and I would not
be caught dead in sweatpants or anything other than nice jeans, nice shoes,
matching this and that, etc. etc. etc.. But then warmth, necessity and age
allowed me to change my wardrobe somewhat.

In 1997 my feet and ankles began swelling like the sizes of big potatoes. I
had to stop wearing tennis shoes and turned to other shoes so I would not
get pressure because of my fat feet not fitting in anything. Further... it
seemed as time goes on... the colder I would get very easily.

Anyway... I wanted to attest that the following Tempur-Pedic Foot Comforters
are very, very nice! I have been wearing sandals of some sort over the last
seven years and in the winter time I put socks or colored stockings on and
then the sandals.

At first I thought that they would look too big or out of place but they are
actually pretty stylish. The ones that I have are very dark navy blue (that
I can only tell when I put them on with my black pants) and are so plush
that I just put my bare feet into them.

Also... a sore that I have had for many months has JUST healed although it
is still a little pink. Since it is my husband would have to deal with the
repercussions of the sore coming back...HE WOULD NOT EVEN ATEMPT OR ALLOW me
to wear these. But since I am wearing them... that is how soft they are and
rather pressure less (since absolutely no pressure is the only solution to
get rid of a sore).

So if anyone is interested in keeping their feet warm (which will help warm
you all over)... check out the following product:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemrd=1item=120196407260ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:ITih=002#ebayphotohosting

Shipping and handling is free within the United States and this is the best
price we could find on the product. NO... I am not the seller!
Just trying to help somebody out who easily gets cold. It is sunny and 64°
here today but chilly in the shade and the same temperature as always in the
house. But I love my new foot comforters despite that!

Re: [QUAD-L] Permobils Minivans

2008-01-02 Thread Lori Michaelson
I would think that a letter (a very good letter) by an occupational
therapist would get by the Medicare guidelines. I will be finding that out
when I go to look for a new chair myself.

I very highly doubt that the size of minivans have changed. Yes, it is very
annoying to have to duck my head but I have gotten used to it now.

All the items you talked about should fit in the back of the minivan. Since
I do not drive and I pull in and pull into the passenger side... we took out
the middle seat. I am very glad that I have my Permobil that turns on a
dime because otherwise that would be a pain. Although I do not remember it
being a problem with my old chair *that did not have* rear wheel drive like
the Permobil and several other new chairs out there.

It is only a tight fit for me to turn after I get up the ramp because my EZ
Lock is right there to my right and I have to maneuver myself *just right so
that my front right tire does not keep running into it or scraping it. I
have scraped against it many times but the tires have still held up well.
Well, the right tire anyway!*

I am sure that minivans are much better with mileage for obvious reasons but
that is why you have to consider all the pros and cons. For example... my
husband has been saying that our next van would probably be a full-sized one
again. But having lived in freezing cold areas and very hot areas... I love
the ability to zoom up the ramp rather than having to wait on all the
hydraulics that come along with all the other lifts (with full-sized
vans) to open them, close them, lower them, etc.. The minivan ramp just
drops down really quickly.

Only time will tell if and when I get a new chair or a new van myself!

Thank you for the information. I have the elevate but I have been told
that with the new Medicare guidelines you can no longer get the elevate.. I
wonder if all minivans are the same height. That would be a pain to
have to duck your head. Do you have any problems with space trying to
carry the things that you need as you go anywhere. I have so many things in
my van that I'd tape just in case, like blankets, my suction machine, extra
ramps, a jumpy 2000, that will start your van without another vehicle and
probably a lot of other things.

I really like the elevate because it helps me reach things even though I
cannot do much, wide turn the thermostat up, see if I am at a concert and
people are standing up, push on my remote easier with my stick on my splint.

It seems like the mileage would be better. Is gas cheaper for your
minivan compared to your Ford Econoline?
Thank you so much for your input you are always so clear and informative.

2008-01-02 Thread Lori Michaelson
It was quite easy to know when I got on this list because it was shortly
after I got on the Internet. In early 1995I did not even know a single
thing about the Internet. Then I signed up but ended up being in the
hospital for two weeks with my shunt surgeries. I remember thinking, lying
there in the hospital, that I had just signed up for the Internet and was
paying for it but could not use it or learn how to use it!

I usually can keep track of things (anything) by where I was or who I was
with at the time something happened or occurred. Or categories. Like I can
remember certain things that were pre-my ex significant other. Or when I
was with him. Or where we lived.

And then after I split up with him and what I was doing in the interim
between breaking up with him and marrying my current husband. And what I
have done and where I have lived since our marriage over the last 10 years.

Kind of like where I was and who I was with when this or that happened.

I think it sometime after 1993 as that was when I first got the Internet.
One of my aides found the quadlist for me. I remember reading it but I didn't
really post. I was really happy when she found this for me because it made
me feel like there were a lot of other people in my same situation that I
could relate to. I live in a large metropolitan area of Kansas City in a
suburb
in Kansas , but I don't really know hardly any quadriplegics. Shortly after
I got out of the hospital at KU and was through my rehabilitation at Yonkers
in Des Moines Iowa. We had monthly meetings at each other's houses but that
didn't last very long and we did not really keep in contact. There's only
one person that I still hear out through my mother, because his mother is good
friends with one of my mother's friends and he is a great artist. He has a
show every year in a park, but it is always on the day when my best friend,
who is the main person that takes me out, is not off. One year my
sister-in-law take me but we got there when it was over, so I never got to see
any of
his artwork.

I don't really remember when I first started posting. Thank you so much
Jim, for starting this wonderful list and for all the other participants, who
make it what it is today. The wealth of information that everyone provides
makes it a great place to be.

The House Hearing for the Community Choice Act has been set!

The hearing on CCA and other long term care issues will be held on
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 10 am.
The hearing will held by the Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and
Commerce committee. we still don't have the details on what room but we will
let
you know when we get them.

We want a BIG turnout, like we had for the Senate hearing. If you have a
orange shirt, wear it because it showed up very well not only in the hearing
room, but on the internet as well!

This hearing will keep the momentum going for passage of CCA and reform of
the long term services and supports system.

Let's keep pushing MFP and getting it implemented in the states, BUT let's
also focus on passage of CCA! This hearing is the next step...

situation is set up as a Condo Complex and run by your own management
team..etc..etc..To Blue Sky?..Might be worth a try...Maybe get a few large
corporations to
back it..UPS/HOME DEPOT/ RUBBERMAID/ ETC. Home Depot founders are very big
funding backers of Shepherds...Myron

Good question Dana. Also would this place be for individuals or family
members as well. How about aging seniors and developmental disabled. Would
this
place accept those in Atlanta only or the State of Georgia?
How about those from other states and their families? How about those
without funds or money? Who writes and establishes the criteria?
Intelligent Minds, want to know.

I'm sure that he's referring to Gimp House on the campus of U of Illinois.
It's owned by the campus.
Voc Rehab has paid for most of the budgets over the years with attending
students. I've seen the same at Ball State in Muncie, IN and Kent State in
Ohio.

i visited a house in champagne illinois that housed 4 quads on level 1, a
care giver in the basement and another in the upstairs. seemed like a pretty
handy setup. if there were 5 or 10 houses like this in a row, it would be
even better for everyone. lots of us don't need 24/7 attention but when we
need it, we REALLY need it. i would live in such a place in a heartbeat if i
was alone.

Re: [QUAD-L] Gimp project

2008-01-02 Thread DAANOO
I live in Kansas Myron,. I doubt that I would move away from my family,
unless it was really a good place to live. My family doesn't do a lot for me
physically, but it's nice to have family around and I am on a fixed budget and
I get my care through self-directed care so I don't have money to travel back
and forth.

It is a great idea for those who can afford to do so. I think it would be
great to be in a warmer state.
We have had a horrible winter in Kansas. I can't imagine the government
paying for anything that is that elaborate! They haven't yet and the budget
is
getting tighter. I sure don't like that last e-mail from adapt to cut care
hours, which would put a lot of us in nursing homes for sure. I think you
often get more funding when you are going to college?

Do a lot of you worry about your future, I sure do. It's hard to find PCA's
on the amount of money they give us through self-directed care and it will
be even harder as we get older and our needs increase., especially those of us
without a significant other. I know that sometimes with a significant
other, you get less care and that person may not receive payment for their
services.

Can anyone address the issue of how, Money follows the person might change
anything for those of us on state-funded care will really just provide more
persons that need to live independently rather than in the institutional
setting? Will it just provide extra money to the states for this?. Will
money
directed to institutions be used for persons getting independent living
instead?

I understand what those are saying about their spouses being caregivers and
not lovers, just because
of the stress and burnout that a lot of caregivers get. That is a another
topic it is a remarkable couple that can keep the relationship alive in that
respect. They need to write a manual.

Sorry I talked about so many different things in one e-mail.

Dana
