Hey Tod,
After reading this post I'm definitely going to the sp done.
I'm tired of constantly changing and watching the texas rig rip my soldier
up and it's very painful too.
I've been holding out but after reading your reply I don't know why I've
waited so long.

Thanks,

Hi Tim

When I first got my suprapubic in '97 I took the morning off from work. The
whole procedure was done without anesthesia but they kept careful watch on
my BP... I did get a little AD as a "over-filled" my bladder to begin the
procedure.

I went home with a 12fr foley and went to work that afternoon. That first
month was a little difficult as I did leak around the stoma at times and
granules would build up and clog the narrow 12fr. About one month later I
graduated to a 14fr, and then 16fr, and finally settled into using an 18f
foley catheter ever since. It works well for me but I do still occasionally
get crystallization and granules in the catheter. That's when I know it's
certainly time to change it... usually every 4 to 6 weeks.

As for cleaning, each day I use a small amount of Neosporin cream and
sprinkle a bit of Tinactin (yep, the foot powder) around it to keep it dry.
I cover it with a 2" x 2" square of gauze drain sponge cut in such a way
that the catheter comes out the middle (kind of a "T" shaped cut into the
center). Works well for me.

I have friends who went to get a SP and there was no graduating from smaller
to larger diameters. They came home with the 24fr. To me, it looks like a
garden hose! On the other hand, they rarely get clogged. So I guess it's 6
of one, half a dozen of the other.

However you do it, I wish you the best. I've had wonderful success with
mine and had far fewer "serious" infections and urethral irritations ever
since. I'm sure you'll at least have that to look forward to. (Not to
mention the "Free Willie Factor")

Best of luck!

I am 49 years old. I didn't start bleeding until 14 months after my injury.
And then it came back. It was awful. My husband had to deal with the mess and
also my caregivers. My OB/GYN decided to put me on Depo-Provera. I get the
shot every three months, and I don't have any periods at all. It has been the
best thing I could have ever done! Ask your doctor about it. It's worked
great for me.

I am 42 years old, and after my accident in December of 2000, I didn't have
my period for seven months or so. Of course, when I would mention this to my
husband back then, he would say let's not talk about it. Maybe it will never
come back. Well, shortly after that it did come back. Now, I wish it would go
away. Couple of things. One is that I have a 33-year-old caregiver, who had
to have a total hysterectomy due to cancer. She is cancer free and we are
always joking about her not having a period anymore and how I wish I didn't.
Also, I never thought my husband would be putting in a tampon for me, much less
showing a caregiver how to do it. I use a tampon during the bowel and shower
program. Thank God we have a good sense of humor. I have to wonder if I'm
looking forward to menopause. As I'm normally cold, and I wonder how the hot
flashes are, besides the lack of bleeding. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

  Take care --

As for hospital insurance through physicians mutual, I only pay around $230 a year which equates to less than $20 a month.  It pays me $75 a day if I become hospitalized.  I have had the insurance since 1996 though, so it might cost more now.  I haven't checked in a while.

If you ARE talking to me and asking me if I am using something for circulation, etc. since my DVT ... just a baby aspirin a day.  I was on Coumadin for 10 years only because I was afraid to go off of it... because I am immobile, etc..  But that arsenic can build up in your bones and I finally called it quits about three years ago and have been fine with just a baby aspirin a day.

I had a DVT (deep vein clot/thrombosis) in 1995 that was encouraged by surgeries.  I was also very, very, very lucky to have survived it because I was telling doctors (my neurosurgeon and his staff hours away) my symptoms and they were ignoring them even though they were classic symptoms of a DVT!  Hitherto ... I was not familiar with clots of any type so I was in the dark.  It was the Internet that saved my life essentially.

With what I described... they should have wanted to at the very least eliminate the possibility of a clot since I just had two surgeries with that doctor and that is a primary thing to worry about after surgery.  But noo... I thought it was probably just swelling and I should wear some of those tight hose.  QUACK, QUACK

I went around for about a month with my left lower leg very swollen and very hard.  I finally read an article on the net (I was very new to the Internet back then and only knew how to look things up) and one doctor in Washington state had an article about spinal cord injuries and folks with MS.  A sentence said "If one leg is significantly larger than the other... it could indicate a clot."  All I knew was that "a clot" was not good but I had no idea that I had a DVT whereby all I had to do was move a certain way to have it move directly to my lungs to kill me.

The very next morning I called my primary care physician and I went to see him.  He looked at it and said "I don't know... I don't think it could be a clot but I will send you over to the hospital to have an ultrasound done."  Needless to say... I never left the hospital because it was a lengthy clot and I was in immediate danger.

The main reason I asked about the type of catheter is because I discovered
about 10 years ago that I am allergic to the silicone products. I first
noticed it when I had a silicone trach to which my skin became adhered. Ear
nose and throat had to rip the trach right out of my neck and finally got
them to agree to do reconstructive surgery about five or six years later.

When I have a silicone catheter in my body, my bladder spasms profusely, I
feel like I have a terrible UTI, the stoma tries to adhered itself to the
catheter, and there are excessive amounts of calcification on the end of the
catheter when it is removed. I now only use latex catheters with a little
bit of silicone coating.

According to my care providers, this is an abnormal allergy, but I thought
I'd let you know about it since you're, seems to close around your catheter.

It has significantly improved over the last nine years. Down here in Tampa,

FW: [QUAD-L] Getting Supra Pubic in 3 weeks

2008-04-15 Thread Merrill Burghardt
I use 10 cc's of natural saline. I daily apply triple action antibiotic
gel, but when the SP is first installed it will generally leak for a few
days. The type used is a 24 French. Mine was a headache for several days.
I even thought it was a mistake but it was worth it.

Gina,
How much sailing are you putting into the bulb? I used to have a problem
with the SP leaking if I put in 5 cc, but I now put in anywhere from eight
to 10 cc.

What type of catheter are you using, i.e. silicone or latex?

I remember hearing through the '90's that the Tampa VA SCI was the best of
top five SCI units in the U.S. followed by other VA SCI units. Mine in San
Diego was great when it opened but the when Staff Head took over his
thinking is not patient orientated which the negligence shows. I've even
had my pension increased due to their negligence. Well I lost my prostate
also. The VA SCIU in Palo Alto was wonderful so I did not mean a bad wrap
against all VA hospitals.

You also have Physicians Mutual insurance? I have their two policies which
helps hugely in keeping out of debt in my poverty income. Do you know of
another good policy or company? Thank you.

I have received all of my care at the VA here in Tampa and while I did have
a similar incident (Lori's DVT problem) I received unbelievable care.

Don't get me wrong, when I first went to the VA in 95, it was not nearly as
good as it is now. Sure, there are still problems, but I think there are
problems in every hospital.

As for hospital insurance through physicians mutual, I only pay around $230
a year which equates to less than $20 a month. It pays me $75 a day if I
become hospitalized. I have had the insurance since 1996 though, so it
might cost more now. I haven't checked in a while.

I am 49 years old. I didn't start bleeding until 14 months after my injury.
And then it came back. It was awful. My husband had to deal with the mess
and also my caregivers. My OB/GYN decided to put me on Depo-Provera. I get
the shot every three months, and I don't have any periods at all. It has
been the best thing I could have ever done! Ask your doctor about it. It's
worked great for me.

I am 42 years old, and after my accident in December of 2000, I didn't have
my period for seven months or so. Of course, when I would mention this to
my husband back then, he would say let's not talk about it. Maybe it will
never come back. Well, shortly after that it did come back. Now, I wish it
would go away. Couple of things. One is that I have a 33-year-old
caregiver, who had to have a total hysterectomy due to cancer. She is
cancer free and we are always joking about her not having a period anymore
and how I wish I didn't. Also, I never thought my husband would be putting
in a tampon for me, much less showing a caregiver how to do it. I use a
tampon during the bowel and shower program. Thank God we have a good sense
of humor. I have to wonder if I'm looking forward to menopause. As I'm
normally cold, and I wonder how the hot flashes are, besides the lack of
bleeding. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Take care --

After 35 years of using external caths, I'll be getting a supra pubic in 3
weeks because my bladder just hasn't been draining well in awhile now. Those of
you with SP's, do you have any advice, tips, input, etc. for this soon to be SP
rookie?

Thanks,

Tim
