Oh, what the hell, it is funny. (Only another quad allowed to say

watch those shows like Ridiculousness or Funniest Videos? People crash

Re: [QUAD-L] Weight and fasting

2013-04-26 Thread bobbie299

Nan has so great advice. But I would like to add 2 things I do, that
works for me. I drink a LOT of water about 1/2 hour before eating
It makes me feel full. I also eat small amounts about 4-5 times a day
(snack size yogurt, pro tine bar, a bowl of cereal) and my main meal is
at 5:00-5:30 I also never eat after 7:00 A high quad friend of mine had
gained quite a bit of weight and lost a lot mostly by not eating any
bread or pasta - carbs. My 2 cents. Bobbie

Nan,
I don't think I crafted my response very well. I'm not a believer in
fasting too much when it comes to be a quadriplegic. I guess that's
because I have had problems with hypoglycemia, so I believe more in
reducing portions and trying to minimize meals a day later if I had the
larger than normal meals.

Instead of fasting, you might want to think about doing one of those
liquid meals like Boost or something like that where you still get the
proper amount of protein instead of giving up completely on eating a
certain meal on a certain day.

I hope you're able to achieve some weight loss. Not getting discouraged
is very important. I have found that after reducing portions for a
while I tend not to eat as much as I used to. I have also found is
easier to eat less if I use smaller plates. It is psychological, but it
works effectively for me.

Interestingly enough, I was watching a show a couple of months ago
where the guy was perplexed as to how the previous owners of his house
were able to put plates in their cupboards. He had purchased an
extremely old house and come to find out people didn't use large place
like we do now 30 or 40 years ago. Just going out to eat in many
restaurants is difficult if you're the type of person who likes to eat
everything on your plate as I was taught when I was young. Now I force
myself to quit whenever I get a little inkling that I am satisfied. I
have found that after about 10 minutes of become full and I don't need
to beat the rest of that food. Being an individual who is a penny
pincher, I still take home the food, but at least I haven't overeating.

Good luck.

my mini quad belly. I need to loss a couple of more pounds of my belly
so that my bladder doesn't hurt as much when I sit up. I sometimes eat
a big meal for a day or two and then try to eat a little bit less the
next few days.

My greatest accomplishments in the weight loss department have occurred
when I have been able to minimize my carbs significantly. This isn't
easy for us, but it does help a lot. Eating a lot more salad and other
vegetables in place of pasta or bread will help you shed the pounds
pretty quickly.

 Hello my friends,
Well, I made it to 40 years! Can NOT believe it. I'm
going out with family and friends to dinner to celebrate enduring
coping against adversity not going completely insane, not dying twice
and living to see 2 nieces born, 4 nephews born, 1 great niece and
3 great nephews. Experiencing some unbelievably hysterical
situations or experiences for instance; within 2 years post my chair
ad 2 fiats, so my sister still got me dressed on a gorgeous summer day
and put me in a wheel barrel. She put a folded blanket on the bottom,
sat me facing the handles and as a C,5,6,7 was able to stay safely
balanced as we proceeded through the day which included going to a
local bar where .… everybody knows your name. Needless to say we
needed not pay for one drink.
Went to my senior high school prom with a eye candy hunk of a man
5 years my senior whom I met on my 1 year anniversary. Lost my
virginity that night, laughing the whole night long … which is a
story in and of it's self.
Went to college, lived on campus 4 years post. At 9 years post I met
Pete, we just celebrated 30 years together. He is the love of my life
AND my soul caretaker 24/7/365 (not recommended).
I've learned to do needle point, crewel work, calligraphy, painting,
write and pioneered the peer counseling program at Kessler.
Camped cross country, 10,000 mile's in 1980 in my first van with my
sister for 8 weeks.

I haven't been on here much lately, but I have seen several people
commenting about their SCI injury date. Well, today, April 5, is my SCI
injury anniversary. I used to dread this day, but now it really
doesn't matter anymore.

I choose to celebrate the good things in my life and therefore I
usually go out to dinner and celebrate August 6, the first day I was
able to breathe on my own without the aid of the ventilator. It's been
18 years now and while I am grayer, a little older looking (actually I
look quite a bit older), I still look fondly on that day as if it was
yesterday.

I'll try to be on here more, but I can't make guarantees.
Take care everyone,

Re: [QUAD-L] Funny Story

2013-04-04 Thread bobbie299

I love that story! I have a silly/funny story I just thought of. A few
years ago Pete, my husband, and I went to an opening of a Art gallery I
helped plan in the next town. It was Valentine's Day and the weather
was really crapy but the turn out was big.

Pete and I started slowly strolling as we looked at each painting.
There was a younger women who was by herself standing next to me. She
had on pants with wide bell-bottom's. She must have steped close to my
tire because when she tried to move … she couldn't because my tire
was on the Conner of her bel-bottom. She didn't say anything p, she
just gave me a look that I can't really describe. As she is trying to
get away from me, I was trying to move off her pant leg but the place
was jammed packed. Pete knew what was happening and we started laughing
but trying to hide it at the same time. This lady was getting madder
and madder which made us laugh even more. Finally she was set free, and
she took off to the other side of the room.

All throughout the night as Pete and I made the rounds and got a snack
and were talking to different people, this lady was trying to stay as
far away from me as possible. We felt bad for her because she was a sad
person, all she had to do was laugh at the situation. Bobbie

Subject: [QUAD-L] Funny Story

Someone's comment earlier today reminded me of a funny incident from
last Summer.

We were out at a local tavern and I introduced my girlfriend to one of
my best friends who happens to be a quad. We all talked for a few
minutes and my buddy was brimming with excitement. He explained that he
had just returned from touring some beautiful high-rise condos and he
was interested in purchasing one. Handing his iPhone to my girlfriend
he explained: The condos were amazing! Here's a photo of the living
room.

My girlfriend held up the phone and we both looked at an amazing photo
of a beautifully furnished living space with a huge window overlooking
the city.

The next picture on the phone, my buddy said eagerly, is the amazing
view from that condo's window!

With that my girlfriend scrolled to the next picture only to be
completely surprised by a full-screen close-up picture of my friend's
pasty-white ass. After the initial shock we both burst out in laughter,
thinking he had pranked us!

My friend looked at us strangely and then turned beet red as
realization hit him. My girlfriend had gone the wrong direction in his
photo album, scrolling backward instead of forward.

Against our howls of laughter he tried to explain that the butt
pictures were take for tracking the healing of a pressure sore (which
I'd already surmised.) The more my friend stammered to explain, the
harder I laughed! Eventually he stopped explaining and started laughing
with us. Even thinking about it now brings a smile to my face.

I'm sure there's a moral to this story but I'm not sure what it is.

True story!

Don.

[QUAD-L] My new chair was approved!

2013-03-19 Thread bobbie299
Hi All,
Today a nurse from my HMO came to evaluate me for approval or
denie me for a Quantum Q center wheel drive (never had one before)
chair. I was approved! Including a power headrest. Not the kind of
power headrest that oporate's the chair's movements but a power
headrest that I oporate from the joy stick where I can comande it to
raise up into any position I desire and ten tuck away. It is a Motion
Concept power headrest.
My vendor said this will be the very first power headrest to be
approved that they have done or have EVER known to be approved. There
most likely will be wanting to do a short video of me demonstrating it
and they will put it on their web site and YouTube … I'll keep you all
posted.
My turning radius will shrink down 18 because of the poor seating
my chair now has and going to center wheel drive. I live in a 400
square foot apartment, so this is going to be a BIG deal. Also, this
chair is going to be 3-4 lower and narrower.
The chair I have now has been a complete nightmare ever since I sat
in it because of the hight and width being WAY to big. There will be
somethings I won't be able to reach but I will be able to get back
under tables again. Bobbie

[QUAD-L] Buy sell?

2013-03-15 Thread bobbie299

Hi All,
I read this idea on the SCI list, I think it was written by Ron
C-7 (I'm sorry Ron, I don't know your last name) Anyway, it was
suggested that us all here have disability item's we no longer need or
use and people here who now find themselves in need of something.

There MUST be a way to work this connection. How about if we just try
the simplest way and just start posting things.
Put in the subject line whist it is that you either need or no-longer
need and want to sell, or give away.

Let's say I see a single size hand crank bed that was posted up for
sale by Pam Zen Now I contact off list and work out the details of
how much it will cost and how it will be delivered.

We can post things like; used van's, used wheelchair's, power and
manual, beds in all sizes, hoyer lifts, or foam wedge's.

What dose everybody think of this idea? Bobbie

Here's my van story  :)

I was hurt in '89 and got about 70k total, so we used some to modify
our basement, and also bought a minivan with side lift.  After a few
years of being driven around I had a swivel seat installed and hand
controls.  I drove that van to college, about a 6 hour drive and a few
years after that drove on my own from Atlanta to Vegas for a 6 month
therapy session.  The engine died in Oklahoma City and I had to stay in
the Bates motel until morning when I towed it to a dealership.  A few
grand and days later I was back on the road again.  I started having
lots of electrical issues with the lift and decided I wanted a car
instead.  After 10+ years of taking my chair apart and using a car I'm
ready for a van again.  Holy cow are they expensive, can't even afford
a used one.

I was paralyzed in 98 and started driving about 2000 after alot of
effort and help from a few others. My dad found a 84 Ford econoline van
in a barn for $1500.00 bucks and we bought it. It had a dropped floor,
old transfer seat and a set of rusted hand controls in the back. I got
the state to install a new transfer seat, new monarch hand controls and
a crescent remote system to operate the lift and power doors. I taught
myself to drive it and rolled with it for four years, then on the way
to the movies the oil light came on. The oil pump in the engine went
out and it was to much to fix, so after pulling everything usable off
of it we donated it to the blind.

I have a power pan instead of lowered floor. It takes me down about 5
in. It is in my 1979 E -150 that I bought new back in '79. I don't
remember them doing lowered floors back in those days.

Rons van Story 2

After my 84 Ford blew up in 2003 I found a 2000 safari wth a side lift,
raised roof, handcontrols and swivel seat with 58,000 for 13,300. the
girl i bought it from was paralyzed in an accident but to afraid to
drive the van. I put an alpine stereo system in it, had a set of cragar
wheels special made, loud exhaust, intake and a slick new paintjob at
Maaco and I was the hit at the YMCA lol.I drove that van until 2012 and
sold her on ebay for 7500.00 to a guy in a nursing home. the man just
sent me the check sight unseen and I shipped it. From that van I
learned I hated raised roofs because they leak and youcant see out as a
passenger so I searched for a new beast with a price no more than
20,000. I found a 2007 Chevy Express full size with a 6 inch dropped
floor throughout and a 2 inch body lift. The van was 3/4 ton 6,000
pounds and had a 6.0 litler V8 in her. Had power doors, swivel seat,
hand controls and the best part 16,000 miles. Paid 19,500 for her
shipped from Texas to St. louis, the guy even installed a remote start
fo me in the deal. When the van arrived it was so tall I was a little
intimidated, but Im doing ok with it. I called the handicap place that
built it in texas and they told me it was special made for a veteran to
drive and he died after he drove it to the hospital and his wife just
traded it to a dealer. The handicap place was going to buy it off that
lot the next day, but I found the ad on ebay first. For 20 grand its
the most van I could have ever found. My next one will be a minivan,
but i wanted to enjoy one more big, loud, noisey gas guzzler b4 I
concede to a carlike van.

When I learned that my college team, the AZ State Sun Devils, would be playing
in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl this year, December 29th at ATT Park in San
Francisco, against the Midshipmen of Navy, I was elated. Jokingly, I said to my
girlfriend: It would be awesome to go to that football game! To my great
surprise she replied Yes, it would.!

We flew from Phoenix directly to Oakland via Southwest Airlines, a very easy
2-hour flight. For those of you who fly, if you ever have a choice between
airlines I highly recommend SW--they do things the right way, in my experience.
We were traveling on a budget so decided not to rent a pricey minivan. Instead,
we would use the extensive public transit system in the Bay area to get around.

Like most of us quads, I don't do well in cold temperatures on a good day, but
I was in for a rough weekend because I didn't realize that I had fractured two
toes in my right foot when my laundry caught onto my joystick and sent me [and
my tootsies] careening into my bedroom furniture. Well, I knew I had hurt my
foot somewhere, but I couldn't see or feel any immediate damage so I wasn't
about to cancel my trip to see the Sun Devils!

The flight went smoothly, but as we departed our plane I noticed that I was
covered with a fine sheen of sweat, the source of this Autonomic Dysreflexia as
yet unknown to me. We collected our luggage and headed out the doors to catch a
shuttle bus to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit--light rail system.) Wham! The
cold Bay weather hit this sweaty quad like slap from an icy hand. Luckily, we
didn't have to wait long and we were on our way to the BART station. The
shuttle to the BART was tolerable, except for the guy across from me who hadn’t
bathed in a year. I believe it is Federal law that there must be one stinky
person on every bus, and we exceeded that mandate.

A few minutes of icy-cold confusion ensued trying to figure out the BART
ticketing kiosks. After some experimentation with the machines we were happily
ensconced on the train, headed up through Oakland, underneath the Bay and into
downtown San Fran where we'd catch one last bus to take us to our hotel near
Fisherman's Wharf. [Be prepared when the BART starts moving because there are
no chair lock-downs. Powerchairs with electronic breaks have an advantage here,
so long as you don't accidentally hit your joystick.]

I wasn't thrilled about our plan to save money by using public transportation,
but as the BART train shook and rattled its way through the darkness I began
thinking this really isn't too bad! A few minutes later we passed the West
Oakland station and the train went underground--underwater too--for several
minutes as we crossed underneath the Bay. I'm sure I could eventually get used
to riding a train underground, but try as I might I could not avoid the thought
of earthquakes and the horrendous way we'd go out if that tunnel ever
collapsed.

I faked a light-hearted smile at my girlfriend who faked a smile right back. I
attempted to say something whimsical to ease the tension but neither one of us
could hear the other over the screeching and grinding noises in the tunnel--a
nice addition to the apocalyptic scene playing out inside of my fevered brain.

I looked around and saw another powerchair user on the train and was somewhat
comforted by the fact that she looked bored. This is old hat for her; a ho-hum
trip into town that she probably takes often. Arriving at our station she
zipped off the traincar  and we hurriedly followed, trying to keep up with her
but she is gone, lost is the sea of humanity exiting these metal rail snakes.
She went that way, my girlfriend says, indicating the direction

40 years for me in April! I remember cut curbs were people's
driveways. I feel like me, Tom, Nan, Shierly and a few more were trail
blazer's. being carried up stairs into a bar to go dancing by the
bouncer's. EVERYBODY in store's staring as if I had 2 heads. Soo
many people would say What a shame ….. Your so pretty. Whst the Hell
is that so pose to mean? It's been real, not boring. I'm extremly
grateful for having Pete in my life for 30 years now … he's my rock.

[QUAD-L] Nightmare Doctor Stories

2013-02-25 Thread bobbie299

I had a GP who ALWAYS made everybody wait 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Anyway, I went to him knowing I was going through menopause. I was only
49 but the women in my family all went through it quite early … fine
with me, no more bleeding as a Quad. TMI for you guys maybe.
After waiting 1 hour I go to see if he can RX me some hormone meds
to combat my multiple symptoms. He's the conversation below;

  What's up?

I think I'm going through menopause.

  How old are you?

  40

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL. And never returned
He literally laughed out loud, in my face and walked out of the exam
room.

I went to the front desk, asked the staff to give me my entire file.
They did. I turned around and told everybody what just happened and
walked out.

I now have a very young GREAT GP. Bobbie

[QUAD-L] Nightmare Doctor's Stories

2013-02-25 Thread bobbie299

 This one's a whopper!

In May 1999 I had to have surgery on a bed sore. I had been seeing a
plastic Sergon Dr.Kutlu for a few months. We set the date. I mentioned
to him, while we were setting things up at the hospital that I was
going to be needing a sand Clinatron bed. He seemed put off that I was
telling what to do.

I have the sugary Tuesday, on Wednesday he came in to change my
dressing, I said to him as he grabbed a pair of gloves from the box on
the wall (the non-sterile kind)

Please wash your hands. I asked him

Well, he went nuts. Who the hell are YOU to tell ME to wash my
hands?

As he continue's his rant he starts to change my dressing (after
washing his hands) and I say to him

I'm surprised you except Medicaid. I said to him.

What are you talking about, I don't except Medicaid. YOU HAVE
MEDICAID!!? he yells

He snaps off his gloves and says. I am NOT taking care of you
anymore.

He's out in the hallway now, out of ear-shot … most of the time and
yelling/telling a nurse

I want you to get Miss Humphreys a phone and phone book so she can
call to get another Doctor

I was very glad of this idea because I got to call EVERY plastic
Sergon in the phone book and tell his college just what he said and
did. Then I called the chief of staff of the hospital who made him
apologize and finish taking care of me until I was discharged.

I went home to an air bed in my living room that didn't work. The
next day I went to Kessler to have my wound looked at (because I have
no Doctor) and he ask's

Who did your surgery? He screwed me up worse.

I was immediately admitted to Kessler for the next 7 weeks.

I, personally, will NEVER EVER go through a colonoscopy, mama gram, pap

Quad years, I'm 57 now. My pain is out-of-control even though I take

Yes, probiotics are beneficial, however I find that you must buy a good
one. It should contain 5 to 10 billion active cultures from many
sources ( several different strains). I think my body gets immune to
them after a while so as with everything else I change it up. They will
not get rid of the quad gut but they help a lot with constipation and

Nan,
Many, MANY years ago … back in the 1970s … I was prescribed
propatheline. I HATETED the dry mouth side affects SO much that I
told my Doc's that I was allegic. Then I realized, a few more years
later, that if they thought I was allegic to propatheline then they
would assume I would be allergic to any other related meds. It took an
amazing amount of YEARS to convince nurse's, Doctor's, ER intake people
that I am NOT allegic to propatheline - I just said so because yada,

I'll take the dry mouth to the sweating any day.  I recently tried
cutting the Propantheline in half, thanks to a Q-List member, and that
really helped.  Plus, I never mind drinking more - and when my mouth is
dry I always drink more...

I'm a Propantheline advocate, but what it boils down to is that we are

My Buddy Ray died last week. He had COPD and carried an oxygen tank
along with him everywhere he went. A few years ago he contracted
pneumonia. He was placed in a coma and put on a respirator. I never
thought I would see him again but he pulled through. This completely
changed my perception . From that day on I would never give up on
anyone. Never in my realm of experiencing loved ones dying did I expect
Ray to breathe on his own once he was taken off the respirator.

Years later, after going out to eat with my parents, Bobbie and my wife
Paula, Ray fell and broke his hip. It was the beginning of a long
desperate battle that ended ultimately in his death. At the wake there
were the same platitudes namely it was his time, he couldn't fight
anymore and he is at rest now.

Today, I got back on my old desktop computer and realized I had no new
jokes. For at least the last five years Ray had been sending me emails
of jokes, prayers, lessons on life, politics (mostly against Obama) and
the occasional e-card. Now, Ray did not send one a day. He would send
five or the occasional seven emails. Up until the middle of 2012 he
would send the emails as attachments where you annoyingly had to click
open the email he sent then click open the attachment and If the
attachment opened a web address or a movie there was another click. It
got so frustrating that I really didn't care if the email was funny.

So, as a tribute to Ray, my Buddy, here’s a message he sent me in
October, 2012 as an attachment:

Just in case I'm gone tomorrow

As I approach my mid-seventies, I am struck by the inevitability that
the party must end. And one clear, cold morning after I'm gone, my wife
will awaken in the warmth of our bedroom and she will be struck with
the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't anymore.
No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more
phone calls just to chat, no more just one minute.
Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away,
never to return before we can say good-bye, say I love you.
So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when
it's broken and heal it when it's sick.
This is true for marriage. And old cars. And children with bad
report cards, And dogs with bad hips. And aging parents and
grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are
worth it.
Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a
sister-in-law after divorce. There are just some things that make us
happy, no matter what.
Life is important, like people we know who are special. And so, we keep
them close!
Suppose one morning you never wake up, do all your friends know how you
really feel? The important thing is to let every one of your friends
know your true feelings, even if you think they don't love you back.

RIP Ray, I miss you and the emails.

Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do!

at 4 AM. So once in Chicago I had about an hour and a half before the
departing flight and it seemed going through security was not too
much of a hassle. Just after a few minutes of waiting at the
departing the gate, I was approached by the individual for special
needs. Now, in times past, they usually transferred me from my power
chair directly to the aisle chair for the aircraft but I had a
different idea. This time around. Straight from my power chair to a
manual chair and then to the aisle chair. , With following my
directions of breaking down my chair and securing a gym bag of my
clothing on top of the wheelchair parts to make one beautiful package
to fit under the plane. Using two ratchet straps and commercial grade
saran wrap to ensure everything would stay together even when they
laid chair down on its side. Even with my chair broken down, it barely
fits in the cargo hole of the aircraft. Getting the bulkhead seats are
the first row of seats in coach section and on the right-hand side of
seating in the middle seat with my traveling companion taking the
window seat. Departing nearly on time, which was very rare than
previous departures. I am 3/4c complete 6 feet tall and just over 200
pounds, so transferring me is not the easiest. Once we touched down
the chair was actually still all put together the same way we packed
it prior to flight. So getting to the airport with enough time to
spare is key in not getting a damage chair during flight and this
occurred also on the returning flight.  So anybody has any questions
about this travel fell free to ask and had an excellent time
celebrating my grandpa's 90th birthday. I hope everybody had a great
holiday season and is ready for this new year. All is well.
Concerning my health really don't have any complaints at this time
except for my new chair. And it's been nearly a year now on getting
my new chair ordered and delivered. It's from 21st-century product
and looks a lot more durable than my current Invacare product! But for
now programming it is the next hurdle and hope to have it on the road
in the near future. Will let you know once I have it up and running.
Take care my friends and have a good one.

A word of warning about backups and generators and so forth. I did a
bit of research on this, and apparently there are different qualities
of electricity. From what I read, a generator or a battery might put
out pure sinewave” or “modified sinewave” power. The modified sinewave
is less expensive and is perfectly acceptable for large motors in
refrigerators and sump pumps, but I have heard that this could be
dangerous to batteries and sensitive electronic devices. In other
words, a backup or generation solution which works perfectly fine for
your sump pump could possibly ruin your bed, computer, and so forth.

I'm not an engineer or an electrician. But maybe you might want to
research this a bit further before you plug in your sensitive devices.
If anybody has more information about this topic, I'd sure like to know
about it.

Good luck, and take care,

Subject: [QUAD-L] Back-up power for our beds ~ solution!

Hi All,
Remember when Hurricane Sandy hit and we were all talking about a
back-up system to power our beds if the power goes out? Well, I thought
of a solution … sump pump back-up battery! My brother is an electrician
and he said these back-up battery systems would be perfectly safe for
in the bedroom.

The way they would work is you plug in the back-up battery directly
into a wall outlet, then plug your bed into the back-up battery. The
entire time the battery is plugged in it is being charged. Then you
plug in your bed directly into the back-up battery system. You can have
a light or TV plugged in as well, but the more you drain from the
system the shortest it would last. As soon as a power outage would
happen the sump pump back-up battery would automatically switch on …
you wouldn't even need to be home.

The sump pump back-up battery cost anywhere from $150-$800
depending on how may Amps you want to have … the higher the cost the
longer you'd have back-up power. They can be bought at a Battery Plus
store or Home Depo type stores, if they don't have them in stock you
can have the store order it. You can also order them on line just
Google sump pump back-u battery.

We’re staying at home, it was 1° this morning and the high today
has been 27° so that’s a good reason to stay home, plus 5 inches of
snow on our mountainside makes getting in and out of our property
somewhat difficult.  My van is not a four wheel drive. Curry
chicken, lobster and twice baked potatoes for dinner and coffee and
bailey’s Irish for toasting, can’t get much better. Thanks Glenn
for the prayers for healthy, and I just replaced my tires and now my
batteries, so I will be good to go.  Happy new year to all of you, and

[QUAD-L] Back in bed again

Hi All,
I have to stay in bed till Aug 2nd Bobbie

[QUAD-L] Need to vent, one of those nights

2010-07-01 Thread Bobbie299
Hello dear comrades,
OK, here is the set up. I've got a lot on my mind, like July 7th I'm
going to a wound care Dr. because I have the beginnings of a pressure sore
on my upper thigh, July 19th I'm going to a neurosurgeon to find out how he
can help me with my syrinx that is causing out of control pain in my neck
from C 4 to C 7. August 4th I'm going to the hospital for a procedure to check
out my stoma from my urostomy because I've been getting a lot of bleeding.
Yesterday I went to my GP and found out I have Mersa in my urine which most
likely means I have Mersa in my open wound as well. My right shoulder hurts
like hell because I have arthritis, bone spur and chronic tendentious in the
rotator cuff.
My s/o care taker 24/7 for over 25 years turns me on my left side to give
me the magic bullet, which hurts my shoulder because I have no support for
it, which means I can't sleep because of the pain in my neck and shoulder. I
can't turn on my other side because of the stoma. Pete turns me around
2:30am so I can get some sleep - this is after he cleans me up. As he turns me
he discovers that the bed is completely soaked because the stoma is leaking,
urine every where. Now he has to turn me on my back and change the stoma
which takes about 45 minutes while Iay naked because my bed shirt got wet and
if I put on a clean one it also will get wet before he changes the entire bed
which he dose after changing the stoma. OK, now the bed is changed, with me
in it, and now he needs to change the dressing on my wound on my upper
thigh. So, now it's 3:45am I watch a little TV to calm down, fall asleep around
5:30am when around 7:00am the lawn more crew shows up at our apartment
complex to wake us up. Bobbie

[QUAD-L] pain meds question

[QUAD-L] pain Doctor a gem

2010-06-23 Thread Bobbie299
Hi All,
I went back to Kessler to see the pain management Doctor - the week
prior I had to first see a psychologist who was an ass. This pain Doctor was
very compassionate and listened to me and asked good questions. He doubled
the strength of the Hydrocodone to the highest strength and gave my pennsaid a
topical medication to put directly on where it hurts the most.
I had an MRI last month on my neck and it was discovered that my syrinx
(fluid based syct) had grown quite a bit since 2005 from just C 5 to C 4 down
to C 7 which is causing a lot of my pain. My shoulder has artritis and
cronic teniditis in the rotator cuff.
I go to see this pain Doctor in one month to see how I'm doing. I had to
pee in a cup and will need to each visit - fine with me.

[QUAD-L] Pain management pain in the a** psychologist

2010-06-22 Thread Bobbie299
Hi All,
I saw a psychologist last week, it was the first part before going to
see the pain Doctor who will prescribe my new and improved pain meds. I
thought it was a JOKE! They, Kessler, had mailed me a 15 page form to fill out
regarding my pain - where is it, what meds am I on now and on a scale of 1 to
10 how do I rate my pain. OK, so I filled it out then went to see the
physiologist who had the personality of a blank piece of paper, he sat behind
his
desk in front of his computer and asked me ALL the questions that I filled
out the day before. He ONLY asked me Where is you pain? How long have you
had pain? On a scale of 1 to 10 how is your pain now? Then he said OK,
you can go now I got a little miffed and said You didn't ask me about what
I do and now can't do because of my pain, you never asked if I was ever
suicidal or depressed or if the pain interfered with my every day life, you
didn't ask what do I do on a daily basis - hobbies or interests. I told him
that I thought all those things were just as important. He said nothing AT ALL.
The next day I wrote down on a piece of paper what I wanted to tell him,
then I called and left him this long message. Something like this; I
think it is important that you realize that there is more to me than my pain. I
use to drive but cannot because of my pain, I can't type as long, stay in my
chair as long as before. I use to be very active in my community now I
cannot.
  Tomorrow, I'll see what happens.Bobbie

I'm going for pain management, but first I have to go talk to a
psychologist. I want to know from an of you out there who have gone through
this;
what should I say and what shouldn't I say in order to get some pretty
strong pain medication for my syrinx pain?
I had an MRI back in 2005 which diagnosed my with a syrinx then just a
few weeks back had a second MRI on my neck to find my syrinx is much
larger-hence more intense pain, so much pain I am no longer driving.

[QUAD-L] reaching greeting cards

2010-03-29 Thread Bobbie299
Hi All,
I see my sister Bobbie had sent a message through you about
SendOutCards. I also think it was very prudent of you to add your insight to
the fact
that other choices are available. It shows you do watch what is being passed
around and that you care about the content and make positive comments and
suggestions.
That being said I am excited to ask you to please go to
_http://www.garysueh.com/_ (http://www.garysueh.com/) (that is Gary Susan
Humphreys) and
send a couple of cards (pre-paid with the stamp) on us. Then you will see the
competitive difference first hand.

We have a fully functional contact management system (put names in one
time, even from an excel spread sheet) with birthday and anniversary reminders.
We print a high quality card with pictures, address it, seal it, put it in a
real envelope, with a real postage stamp and take it to the PO. As you
mentioned some of the web based programs you have to print it yourself (it you
have a color printer of quality available), fold it, address it, seal it,
stamp it and get it to the postman. Hardly compares to what we do. Most of the
other companies that will print you a quality card have a minimum set you
must buy, then pay the shipping back to you and you have to get them ready for
the mail. Average cost $3.37

Now I just got off the latest Hallmark site. They will print a high quality
card with editing capabilities and mail it for you with what they call a
free stamp for $3.49. Our cost is $1.42 (card .98 + stamp .44) with the stamp
or less, depending on volume.

go to _http://www.hallmark.com/_ (http://www.hallmark.com/) , or
_http://www.shutterfly.com/_ (http://www.shutterfly.com/) or
_http://www.walgreens.com/_ (http://www.walgreens.com/) or others see for
yourself.
Then go to our site and send a couple of trial cars on us. Send one back to
someone you care about and can see the card for yourself. I am more than
willing to spend $2.84 so you can send 2 cards and see it first hand. By the
way when you put in the address don't forget to hit Create new contact
manager entry. That way you will never have to type in that address again.
Try it, you'll like it.

you read a verse you don't like - you can write whatever you want. There is
a free trial, send a card to your self so you can see the quality. And if
you have ANY questions my brother answers the phone and will talk you through
it till you get the hang of it. At first I thought it was to expensive but
then I found out that you can put in only the amount you want to spend and
not the deals their trying to sell you. Give it a try, the first card is

[QUAD-L] How much is too much pain?

2010-02-21 Thread Bobbie299
Hi All,
My pain has gotten so bad that I'm having trouble sleeping. I went to
my rehab Dr. at Kessler and she prescribed me Flector Patch to put on my
shoulder where I tore a tendon between my bicep and shoulder and she also said
...try not to use that arm so it can heal. My neck also has been nasty bad
with pain, I guess, from my srynix which she suggested I have a shunt
implanted. I tried the patch on my neck and it did seem to help - I'm going to
end up being covered with patches all the way around my neck. But I do NOT
want surgery on my neck - hell no! I already take Methocarbamol, perkiest,
Hydrocodone and now this patch, but I NEVER take more that two at the same
time.
I started meditating more often for pain control. In New Jersey a law was
passed to legalize marijuana for medical use but it isn't implemented yet.
My pain has been getting progressively worse every year and in April it
will be 37 years. I'm scared of what is around the conner - how bad can it
get?
How do ya'll deal with your pain?~ Bobbie

[QUAD-L] Who's falt was my broken neck - you be the judge

2010-01-11 Thread bobbie299
Hi all, Here is the story of how I had my accident. Bobbie
After lunch in Denville at Bond’s Ice Cream polor, we dropped my mom off.
When
she closed the door to the van, she leaned her head in, pointed at the
dirt-bike tied
up in the back and said “I don’t want you riding that thing” I told her “
OK, I
won’t” The thought actually hadn’t crossed my mind, because a few month
prior I
had tried to ride the very same bike in Eddie’s driveway, but ended up
crashing it
into their garage.
Once we got to the make shift “track” Eddie unloaded to van. We could hear

and periodical see a young 12 year old boy riding his small dirt bike too
as he
buzzed around the track. Eddie put his helmet on and hopped on his brother’
s bike,
started it up immediately and took off. I watched as he did “donunts”
which is
spinning the bike around in circles leaving the front tire in one place.
Then he would
go way up a large mound of dirt that had been plowed up high by bulldozer’s
who
were clearing the land of it’s corn fields, making it ready for a new
office building
complex. Eddie would also make the bike ride on just the back wheel and
sometimes
stand on the seat while the bike was moving.
Tired and exhilarated Eddie stopped right next to me very quickly and asked

“Do you want to give it a try, it’s fun”? I told him a few times that I
really didn’t
want to, without giving him any reason. Finally I just blurted out
“For once I want to do something my mother told me to do” He wouldn’t hear
of it.
I remember him saying at one time
“You know you want to” Eddie said as he was strapping on his sweaty
helmet.
Next thing I remember I was sitting on the 250 Kawasaki wearing my ped
sneakers, jeans and a short sleeved blue shirt I bowered from my brother
Gary,
while he was away in Korea with the Army. Eddie explained to me again how
to
control the dirt bike.
“…turn this to give the bike gas, squeeze here for the break, keep your
feet up”
“See it’s easy and there’s nothing around here for you to run into”
Reminding me
teasingly of my crash into his family’s garage in Newark.
I played around with the bike to get a feel of how it would handle on the
dirt.
At one point I accidentally went over a small clump of packed down earth, a
bump.
The bike lifted off the ground slightly. I loved the feeling and asked
Eddie how I
could do that jump higher and faster? He explained
“When the front wheel of the bike hits the bump, give the bike all the gas
and lift the
handle bars up at the same time”
I decided to back up a little bit so I could build up more speed. I
distinctly
remember looking up at the sky and at my watch, it was 4:15 and looked like
it was
going to rain soon. I told myself ‘I’ll just try this once because I need
to get back
home to pick up my sister DeeDee from her girlfriends house and bring my
other
sister Patti’s girlfriend back to her own house before dinner. I had
promised my
mom that I would do that for her today.
My eyes were fixed on the jump and I was determined to do this right. As
the
bike picked up quite a bit of speed I saw the front wheel hit the jump, so
I twisted
the throttle with my left hand aggressively, giving the bike all the power
it had, just
like Eddie said. Immediately I realized that I had forgotten a very
important step in
doing a proper jump. I didn’t lift the handle bars up. I got so excited
about building
up good speed and timing the gas with hitting the bump, that I just totally
forgot
about the handlebars. This can’t be good, I thought.
At that second, everything began moving in slow motion even though I had
built up enough speed to fly through the air at 30 mph. Some how I
instinctively
knew what exactly was going to happen, actually one of two things, I just
didn’t
know yet which was going to prove to be true. I was going to crash and
break my
neck and be killed or be paralyzed for life. The bike dropped away from me
and fell
the ground and I continued through the air like a rocket headed for the
large 25 foot
high mound of dirt. I hit dead head on, my chin went into my chest and I
fell to the
ground like a rag doll, resting on my left side in a fetal position.
I opened my eyes and saw only dirt, I thought I was dead and buried; this
is
what it was like to die. Just then Eddie turned me over onto my back.
“Are you alright”? he asked nervously. Realizing I wasn’t dead, I calmly
answered “No, I broke my neck”
“How do you know that”? he asked confused
“Because I can’t move” I stated as a matter of fact.
“Did you try to move”? he was getting annoyed now
“No” I told him
“Well try” he demanded
I looked over at my right arm which was now lying outstretched away from my

body seemingly unattached, I concentrated on moving it with all my might.
But it
only moved about a half an inch.
“That’s it” I said to Eddie

[QUAD-L] A project I worked over the summer

2010-01-05 Thread bobbie299
Hi all,
I've kept meaning to tell you about a project that came to fruition
this past summer. I built a wheelchair accessible labyrinth in one of my town's
parks. It is 60 feet in diameter painted on flat black top sandwiched
between a rather large picnic area with a provillion and a public 18 hole golf
course.
For those of you who may not be sure what a labyrinth is - it is
sometimes confused with a maze. A Maze is built to confuse by having dead ends
also
your not to see the center, where a labyrinth is never confusing - there is
one way in and one way out with no dead ends - and you can always see the
center. The reason for a labyrinth is for meditation or prayer that a person
walking/rolling would do all you walk the labyrinth, mine takes about 15
minutes to complete. In September when it was finished I had a candle lit walk
a
sunset with about 12 people from 5 to 84 years old. If you'd like to see
what it looks like google labyrinth locator then type my zip code 07054 and a
picture will come up along details of my Lenape Labyrinth. ~ Bobbie

Re: [QUAD-L] Scoliosis +

2009-12-28 Thread Bobbie299

Bobbie, are you incomplete or a complete injury? How many years post and on
what level C./4? Do you deal with pain? Mine is through the roof!

I am complete C 4,5,6,7 36 years post, I deal with my pain by limiting my
hours in the chair averaging 8 hrs per day and taking three different types
of pain meds - perkiest (sp) soma, Hydrocodone. I don't take then all at the
same time, I take different ones according to my pain level at the time and
of course the weather here in New Jersey. I also have a syrinx at C 5 that
is a worse pain than my scoliosis - sometimes.
Quite honestly I'm very tired of dealing with this quad crap and putting
up an I'm OK front to everybody but my husband. I don't get the flu shot
or breast exams or uro exams or any other preventive health exams because I
don't want to prolong my life as a quad. I'm grateful to you guys to talk to
and hear what you have to say. Happy New Year! ~ Bobbie

[QUAD-L] SCI, death depression

2009-12-28 Thread bobbie299

If you want to die, you need some help. Depression is also very painful. I
know. I have had it, and see the other side. Please take care of yourself
and your depression, and look to see what meds or other depression treatment
you can have to live a long quality of life... Okay?

What is wrong with death, it's a part of life? I'm not depressed, I've been
depressed and I know what it's like - even when I was depressed I never
took medication because it was not going to change the situation. I have SO
much to be grateful for - my apartment, my husband, my van AND the ability to
drive, many friends family. I'm just so very tired of 36 years of waking
up as a quad period. ~ Bobbie

[QUAD-L] The movie Avatar a para has the lead

2009-12-27 Thread Bobbie299
Hi Everybody,
Go see the movie Avatar it is AMAZING. It's shown in 3D and the
special effects are just outstanding. It's 2 hrs 45 mins long but went by
very quickly.
The lead guy is a para in a manual w/c I think from a war injury because
he is still a marine and with a unit was sent to a futuristic lab that he
is filling in for his twin brother. The main story line is he, and others,
are placed in capsule like chambers where while they sleep are put in to a
body of people from another planet, of course when he goes to the other
planet in the sleep chamber he is walking, to learn as much as he can about
them. It cost over $300,000 to make this movie, James Cameron (Titanic) wrote
and directed it.
I highly recommend going to see this movie but if you have any problems
with motion sickness, don't go. ~ Bobbie
