I s agree as well. I have mantle cell lymphoma, a cousin to leukemia.
Diagnosed in 2013. By all studies, it could return in 3 yrs in which chemo will
have no effect. There has been a pill that came out in 2014. If my body can't
tolerate it, I'm done! So there comes a time in which we have to look at the

RE: [QUAD-L] Cushion question

2016-07-31 Thread Joan Anglin
I think it's very important to remember that each of us is very different.
We ask for opinions, and many times a solution or partial solution is found
in the answers. However, because of our differences, sometimes it is not.

25 years ago I was bitten by a brown recluse spider. This was back before
the destructiveness of their bite was widely known. The poison spread and
tunneled throughout my right thigh and hip. It required extensive surgery,
and took almost a year before we were done. As a result I had to learn to
sit differently, which eventually led to a sore in my groin.

Over the years we tried everything, staying in bed, roho cushion, wound
vacuum, all ineffective in the long run. During eight years of that time I
was unable to get insurance because I did not qualify for Social Security
disability. After a particularly nasty flare up and six months in a sand
bed, a very kind and generous plastic surgeon who treated me for years and
charged me $25.00 a visit, said I had a couple of options.

Continue treating this and doing all the preventive staying in bed etc. etc.
which led to no life to speak of, or get up and start a life treating this
wound. I made the decision to just deal with it. 17 years later I still
have the wound, it has only flared up a couple of times but considering
where it is located it is understandable. I go to wound care once a month,
and we watch it like a hawk.

For me it was the right decision, at 77 I know that my skin is becoming more
fragile and I am glad for the years when I was able to fully live my life.
Luckily I have been fortunate in having no other pressure sores that have
ever developed into serious problems.

I am not advocating my solution for anyone else, but I'm just putting it
forth to point out that we are all different. Have a great day everyone,
and enjoy the warm weather.

I sit in the foam/air combo which keeps me more stable. the air is only in the
back. this cushion is meant for people with or has had skin breakdown. I sat in
a gel for 25 yrs with no problems and like you lori, was up for the whole day
and yes, I had no problems until I got my new quatrum. the rep did not adjust
the cushion flush to the back which allowed my cheeks to hang over the edge of
the back of the cushion. I drive and yes I sit much higher. it's strange but I
got use to it. my head is very close to the door post. i'm 5'2 with short arms
and sit close to the steering wheel. had to be that way so I could reach
everything! Happy Birthday Lori!!!

I would love to sit more "stable" as well as keeping my ischial tuberousities
safe from further breakdown... especially having old battle wound on both of
them. The Ride Design cushions seem to offer that. Along with breathing room
down there.

I have never had a problem with "pressure" no matter what Cushion I have used.
Further, I never needed a "special" cushion until all of these rehab chairs
that began to come out around 1999 came with seat plates rather than bucket
seats. I digress, when I came home from rehab in 1980 in first Wheelchair
[Everest and Jennings] it had a seat plate I sat up on a foam/gel cushion
whereby I got a little sore on my tailbone.

I did not have any problem with any wounds until they came out with these
latest chairs. After my Everest and Jennings [of which I sat in for only 4 or 5
years) I had a wheelchair called a Fortress Scientific that I sat in for 14
years, 14 hours a day without shifting my weight, and it was just a very
comfortable bucket seat with nothing underneath my butt except for a thick area
of air which was below the seat part of the bucket seat. I never had one...
single... skin breakdown over those 14 years.

However, it is just another way for the people who come out with wheelchairs
and cushions and all of that stuff to keep the money rolling in. Sorry to sound
so cynical, but it is true.

I was just encouraged [by someone on this list fairly recently] to try it since
the Roho cushions have always had me weeble wobbling all over the place. I
began using the Roho cushions after having a Stage III wound. I have not been
able to try another kind [like the ride design cushions] but being held more
stable and sitting lower to the ground. Instead of buying high-profile Roho
question that always has to be "maintained" when I now do not have someone to
maintain it. Except for faithful Tom Borcherding... the president of Roho.
Which I can't thank him enough for!

For the longest time I have been wanting to ask people on the list how they are
able to see out of there van windows???

This is simply because ever since I have gotten one of the latest rehab power
chairs (whether it be Permobil or Quantum which basically all sit at a high
level because of the tilt features) and then have had to put a Roho Cushion on
top of such a high sitting chair... I sit so high in my conversion vehicles
(even with a 10 inch drop floor!) that I can't see anything except the road in
front of me. I can't even see road signs.

I am the passenger and no matter who my driver is... my chin is level with
their forehead!

I would love to sit more "stable" as well as keeping my ischial tuberousities

for 14 years, 14 hours a day without shifting my weight, and it was just a
very comfortable bucket seat with nothing underneath my butt except for a
thick area of air which was below the seat part of the bucket seat. I never
had one... single... skin breakdown over those 14 years.

However, it is just another way for the people who come out with
wheelchairs and cushions and all of that stuff to keep the money rolling
in. Sorry to sound so cynical, but it is true.

I was just encouraged [by someone on this list fairly recently] to try it
since the Roho cushions have always had me weeble wobbling all over the
place. I began using the Roho cushions after having a Stage III wound. I
have not been able to try another kind [like the ride design cushions] but
being held more stable and sitting lower to the ground. Instead of buying
high-profile Roho question that always has to be "maintained" when I now do
not have someone to maintain it. Except for faithful Tom Borcherding... the
president of Roho. Which I can't thank him enough for!

For the longest time I have been wanting to ask people on the list how they
are able to see out of there van windows???

This is simply because ever since I have gotten one of the latest rehab
power chairs (whether it be Permobil or Quantum which basically all sit at
a high level because of the tilt features) and then have had to put a Roho
Cushion on top of such a high sitting chair... I sit so high in my
conversion vehicles (even with a 10 inch drop floor!) that I can't see
anything except the road in front of me. I can't even see road signs.

I am the passenger and no matter who my driver is... my chin is level with
their forehead!

I would love to sit more "stable" as well as keeping my ischial
tuberousities safe from further breakdown... especially having old battle
wound on both of them. The Ride Design cushions seem to offer that. Along
with breathing room down there.

Contour seats have to be designed to fit you. If it's meant to fit everyone it
will just cause you more problems. I personally need a seat that reclines and
can tilt in space. I do know it's possible to get Contour seats that can do
this. Car seats are made to recline an automotive manufacturers have been
studying the way people sit for a long time much longer then wheelchair
manufacturers. I'm absolutely certain that Contour seats can be made to fit
into wheelchairs without risking sores.
I get a little upset when I get into a car seat that is more comfortable then
my wheelchair and reclines electrically yet nothing like it is available in a
wheelchair. Let's face it a Roho seat maybe the height of comfort in
wheelchairs but it looks like crap. I think it's about time some wheelchairs
had a little bit more Style.
Best wishes to all

I have always gone back to Roho after trying a new cushion. I'm sure there will

different shape and size. If it curves where you don't, could cause an issue.
though if it fits good, might as well try it.

try the Ride Designs by Java. So it must be a good cushion.

Re: [QUAD-L] Cushion

2014-02-14 Thread Bob Vogel
Hi Eric,

I have been using the ROHO Quadtro cushions since 2005.  I started out on a 3
high (custom) and
now I use a ROHO High Profile Quadtro and used a regular style cushion before
that.  The ROHO Quadtro is just as tough as a standard ROHO.  One time I had
the right rear part of a cushion go flat--it was because I was using a borrowed
chair that was digging into the cushion.

Bobbie, in my survey of one if you like the regular high profile ROHO you
will love the Quadtro--it
helps in positioning.

Eric, where is the cushion developing a hole? Is it possible something on your
chair is doing this?  You have
probably already checked this out, but it is worth looking into.

Re: [QUAD-L] Cushion

2014-02-14 Thread Nan
I tried an Aquila cushion and sent it back because the bladders kept deflating.
This was when it was new to the market, however and may be a very good product
now.  If anyone tries one, I'd like to hear about it!

I have also tried the Quatro.  I had problems with sores caused by the seams
where the four chambers meet.  I was really disappointed that it didn't work
out because I have scoliosis and sit harder on one side -  it sounded so
promising.

I have had the best success with the high profile Roho.  I've been sitting for
nearly 46 years and my skin is super fragile.  As long as it has just the right
amount of air in it, I can sit all day. If I lose air it is very hard to
'tweek' it back.  When that happens I really need another pressure mapping and
sometimes it's a big hassle because of my insurance.  It works though ... when
will they figure out that prevention is cheaper than fixing?

Nan
Have a good day!

Been on a Roho High Profile for 16yrs. A good cushion is key but you still
need to get off your butt.

Amber anyone ever talking about trying one other than Lori Was talking about it
at one point. Her and she doesn't seem long enough for something that
expensive. I asked my wound care doctors about it number of years ago and they
didn't know much about it other than they didn't think it would be worth the
money. I would Not want to try if I had insurance paying 80% and I don't.
Written about it on the site called can cure. That might Not be the right name.

The Airpulse PK2, it circulates air with a pump, you can control the time,
and air pressure. It sounds great, but is $3500.
I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having one.
It only has a one year warranty and that worries me. For that much money I'd
want at least five years, you can buy an extra one year warranty for 250.

Great to hear that it actually works. I wonder why It only has a one-year
warranty.

I tried one years ago when they first came out.  I was not impressed and went
back to a Roho product.  I went from a low profile  to the high profile quatro.
I still get sores occasionally ... mostly shears, but I have yet to find a
better cushion.

Hi. Thanks for the info. I've been trying to find a cushion for some time. I
ve been bedridden for over a year with a chronic sore. Finally, got it
healed for the second time without having to undergo surgery. I haven't been
able to find a cushion that doesn't cause problems. I've gone as far as
purchasing an alternating cushion. It turned out to cause the most breakdown
I'm tired of living my life in bed. How long have you had yours and how is
it working?

hi, I wanted to recommend a cushion for everyone. It's from Aspen Seating
out of Colorado. They form the cushion to your bottom, so it's made
specifically for you. Takes away all the pressure points. I love mine!

Hi guess this is for Dylan regarding a cushion. My Chair Tech says the hi
profile roho is best for quads who can't move. I met another quad that had a
mold made after pressure mapping. This cushion is called Ride Designs R1
Cushion.

Every arse is different. Get yours pressured mapped. It's simple. They
slide a black cloth between you and cushion and any pressure shows up red on
a computer screen

Re: [QUAD-L] cushion

Dylan, If the Quattro Roho is working for you without any problems with it I
would suggest that you stick with it. The old saying, if it ain't broke don't
fix it holds true here. If your Quattro is nearing five years old or older you
might consider getting a new one as the average life of one is five years.
If you are having trouble sitting on the Quattro, Roho makes a series of
Quattro select cushions that you might want to look into.
Also if you're having trouble on the Quattro you might want to look into Ride
Design custom cushion. They do a molding of your behind and the cushion is
supposed to suspend your ischial tuberosities and work like a type of orthotic.
I have one and have been having trouble with it. It has worked for most as it
has a 95% success rate.
Have you been having trouble with pressure sores? Let us know how you make
out... Dan T.

I have used a Roho when flying and I found that it became very hard and left
marks. If you have a Roho you might want to consider a different cushion for
the flight. Dan T.
