Re: [QUAD-L] do or don't you use narcotic/pain meds-survey
>From what I've been reading, you are right about AD being a problem for many >paras, too. Bobbie, the easiest explanation of AD (autonomic dysreflexia) was this. Your bowel and bladder and sex organs function attached to your sympathetic nervous system as well as the central nervous system. When something is wrong your sympathetic nervous system begins to malfunction causing your heart to race, your blood pressure to go up and breathing difficulties as well as spasms. AD also occurs when pain is severe enough to overwhelm your entire nervous system. Untreated it can lead to stroke (hence the severe headache) and heart attack. Some people have told me tthey couldn't catch their breath. This is due to the heart beating to fast and irregular for blood to get oxygen as it passes thru the lungs. As my doctor, (Randall Bradom) told me years ago, a stuffy nose can be a preliminary symptom. Last I heard, he was head of rehab at Columbia University Hospital. I read where there was a study about pneumonia triggering AD. Most quads loose half to two thirds lung capacity just from the injury. I get my flu shots and pneumo-vax regularly. I've never had a cold, but pneumonia once. Avoid snotty children and adults that just can't get rid of a cough. Practice using an inspirometer,(the tube with a hose that you inhale slowly from) and cough when you can. Maybe an aid will help you by doing the Hiemlich manuvre. Since the blood clot hit my lung I only draw .8 litres of air. I use to draw 2.4 litres. I have 2 different inhalers and a nebulizer 4 times a day, oh yeah, in bed I use an oxygen machine. There is absolutely no space left in my bedroom. Go to http://www.christopherreeve.org/site/c.mtKZKgMWKwG/b.4453413/k.5E2A/Autonomic_Dysreflexia.htm And read up. I don't think I gave you bad advice, but they can describe it so your understanding is much more detailed. Quality of life is what we all look for, so do what you must so you can do what you want. It’s still egg size, but they are afraid that if they cut it out it would be very bloody. And that can cause it to grow back even worse. Though I can’t feel it like a point of pain, like a cut, burn, spot. It caused A.D. sweat, high blood pressure. And a very heavy chest, like pneumonia. I’ve never had that feeling with A.D. before. The actual pain is in my whole thigh area. I mean like it’s being crushed. I would dream every night that I was on fires or my leg was trapped in a car door. I went to the E.R. a couple of times doubled over in pain. I had spasms so bad I grunted. Docs just kept trying anti spasm meds, but I knew it was not regular spasms. Finely they found the problem after multiple x-ray trys. Pain meds control it. Very little spasms. My thigh still has a burning/throbbing feeling, but it’s tolerable. Though if I miss a dose of meds, within hours I’m miserable. The meds cause so many bowel issues I’m thinking of trying to cut the growth out. Greg

RE: [QUAD-L] do or don't you use narcotic/pain meds-survey
I am not a doctor, so don't count on me for medical advice. I'm sure you can do a Google search to get some information on this. Sometimes, when something is wrong and you can't feel it, your body will react by giving you a headache, high blood pressure and/ or chills, or some other sensation. In my case, I have a Supra-pubic catheter, and when it gets blocked or is kinked, I start getting weird sensations. In one case, when apparently the catheter was inserted incorrectly, I was admitted to the hospital with extremely high blood pressure and an unbelievable headache. So if you are feeling weird or strange, it might be your body trying to tell you that your shoes are too tight or something is pinching you. Or there is some other thing which is wrong. I went 20+ years with no meds, other than for UTIs. Though after I hurt my hip, the bone tried to heal itself. It never stopped growing. It ended up growing like branches into the muscles. I had to use radiation to get it to stop. Greg

Don, You are sooo correct about the cold temps. I'm 39 years post and live in Northern New Jersey. I have scoliosis and a syrnix in my neck. I take morphine, hydrocodone, Valium, nurontin and pennsaid. I'm not in pain Don. It really doesn't hurt in the sense that I feel the pain. When I don't treat it my blood preassure rises, I get cold sweats to the point of being drenched. My heart starts an irregular fast beat and I feel like I'm being crushed. I become rigid then start convulsing violently. I have done this on fountain square, Dr.s office, several times in the hospital. At home many times. Untill I feel crushed I can't say it hurts. Its my body that hurts, unfortunately, I have to keep it happy or it'll kill me. Dr.s that have seen it in the waiting room were stunned, why, "I had no idea it was like that.". Morphine and nitro, ten minutes later, I'm fine. couple hydrocodones for that extra kick while I wait for my ride. I hope that helps explain it a bit. john From: Don Price To: quadlist Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 2:58 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] do or don't you use narcotic/pain meds-survey I am thankful, but after 30 years [in Aug.] of SCI I've never taken anything stronger than Tylenol for pain. Bob and all, Here's what I found: "Autonomic dysreflexia, also known as hyperreflexia, is a state that is unique to patients after spinal cord injury at a T-5 level and above. Patients with spinal cord injuries at Thoracic 5 (T-5) level and above are very susceptible. Patients with spinal cord injuries at Thoracic 6 - Thoracic 10 (T6-T10) may be susceptible. Patients with Thoracic 10 (T-10) and below are usually not susceptible. Also, the older the injury the less likely the person will experience autonomic dysreflexia." http://calder.med.miami.edu/pointis/automatic.html Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] do or don't you use narcotic/pain meds-survey Hi John, From SCI nurses and physicians I've spoken with-- AD can hit anybody with SCI of T6 and above, and is possible in people with SCI as low as T10.
