Probably not unless and until the owner had officially "published" a release.

See PCSetup 2.0's release, for an example.

Strictly legally, if a company hasn't released the copyright, and the
copyright holder still exists, then it can not legally be distributed. If
Sierra says we can't distribute Mystery House, more or less their first
game from the early 80's, then it's not legal to distribute it. That's not
to say they'll prosecute if it is, but strictly speaking it's not legal.

I'm not going to get into a moral vs. justified vs. "If they're not going
to sell it, then why not" argument, just speaking strictly.

As far as I know, in the case where the copyright holder truly doesn't
exist any longer and wasn't just bought by someone else (thereby
transferring the copyrights in most cases), it would then be legal to
distribute it.

"Abandonware" is just a buzzword created by those trying to justify it. I'm
personally on the side of preserving old, but useful software that isn't
being sold anymore, but that doesn't change the fact it's still techincally
illegal.

On this note, does anyone know the legalities of abandoned software? Is there
an inventory anywhere of what software is legally abandoned? Also, what is
the legality of software where the co. that produced it is no more, hence
it is not available?

I dont know about livejournal but with blurty.com it appears to be based on
the AIM client (oscar protocol) so it shouldnt be hard to add support to
GAIM via a plugin or small change

Re: Chat Software

2003-01-19 Thread Jeff L.
Nice, this is EXACTLY what I am talking about. Currently I run ICQ and
AIM's native clients. Together they use 7 Megs of RAM. Still looking for
some way (Java maybe?) to run Yahoo, but a multiprotocol client is my first
choice, A) because it uses less resources, and B) combines everything into
one list for easy use (like Trillian).

Also, I don't know if anyone is into LiveJournal here, but I'm looking for a
68k Client for that too.

Anyway, this GAIM is good news.

About:
Gaim is a GTK-based messenger application. Gaim is NOT endorsed by or
affiliated with AOL. It is actively being developed and supports many
common features of other clients, including many unique features. It
also supports multiple protocols, including AIM (Oscar and TOC), ICQ,
IRC, Yahoo!, MSN Messenger, Jabber, Napster, and Zephyr.

it may be possible to get GAIM (could try an older version of the software
for less system requirments) to run on an old mac.

you could either try to compile it to run in native mac OS or install debian
and try to compile it for still linux but on a different architecture

I have had a conversation with one of the developers of GAIM and they didnt
see any reason why it would not be possible and couldnt think of any
specific limiting system requirments

Are the connections from the logic board to the AV module secure and
good?

(As an aside, my 840 isn't responding to . I have to
use an old monitors control panel to switch it. From your syntax,

Not only is it not fast enough, but 1) 8.5 requires a PPC and 2) the installer
that shipped with an iMac will very likely *NOT* work on any other machines.

Performa 575

2003-01-19 Thread Jim Reagan
Just signed up for the list today and it looks like it will be
informative.
I have a Performa I am considering upgrading. It's info:
Performa 575
LC68040
250 mb
36 mgs ram
66 MHZ
no fpu

I've found a 4.2 gig, 50 pin hard drive on ebay the seller says could
work with some modifications.

I would have to install system 8.5 on the hard drive to use the drive.
Apple says the Performa will support that at it's top level and I have
a copy of Imac disks that I could use.

I'm wondering if the computer speed (66 mhz) would be fast enough to
make the upgrade to 8.5 worthwhile

I've had this Performa since 1995 and it's been rock solid.
I would like to still use it and am open to suggestions.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

Jim R

Problem's somewhere in the output, screenshots are fine. I'm hoping it's
not a loose connection - OTOH, once I track down my soldering iron, I'll be
attacking an SE/30 anyway, so I might as well fix any 840 connections then

A Tale of Two 840s

2003-01-19 Thread E McCann
Playing around with hooking the 840 up to a TV. With two 840s, I get two
different results.

Setup -

840 -> four head cable (Composite, S-vid, two sound channels - apparently I
need all four to get the TV display to work -> converter box (switchbox,
same thing I have a DVD player and VCR hooked into) -> TV.

Settings are the same on both systems. On regular monitors, both displays
are fine. On the TV, though, one is fine - looks just like it does on the
computer monitor. On the other, though, the display is much brighter - too
bright, in fact - and there is what looks like an interference pattern in
some light areas. (Best description I can think of is this - take a
screenshot, run it into Photoshop, lighten it, and keep hitting "Sharpen"
and "Find Edges" 7-8 times.)

So what's causing the difference? The second one's actually physically
painful (literally) to look at for more than 30 seconds. Same port on the
switch box. Same cable. No changes anywhere else. Same amount of VRAM.

This is more a "curiosity" thing than anything, as they're not hooked up to
TVs too often, but if I can remedy it, so much the better.

"For doing videos and sending them to a burner via ethernet I am using apple
video player for the video's at the moment but it is slow."

(From the second post, not the original.) Nothing *wrong* with it, just
pointing out where I saw the info that generated a suggestion.

>them to cd but this is a Quad list and the ibook part is not the part I

... which is partly why the stuff about other machines that got Pickle's
undies in a twist came up - mentioning that (a) the 840's CPU is what's
slowing you down, not software, with a suggestion that you might want to
try encoding on the other machine, and (b) that someone else (*gasp*) used
a much newer machine (oh, the horror) and had similar "can't use the
machine for anything else" results with a suggested bit of software.

Didn't do anything wrong. *shrug* And despite Pickle's reaction, it didn't
turn into a Flat-Panel-Imac, G4, Non-Quadra Lovefest. Chance to? Sure. Did
it? No.

Now, pulling this further into 840AV-land... well, we'll save that for the
next post.

Because some people apparently have trouble understanding simple instructions
that they read when they sign up for lists, I'm reproducing the relevant text
from the list FAQ here:

Quadlist is a forum for users of [or those wishing to discuss - p] 68040-based

Re: 840av

2003-01-19 Thread Jack Gallemore
Additionally, she was using a piece of equipment that I have used on a
newer machine with the same results that she was experiencing. I
didn't realize this list was limited to only experiences on Quadras,
but rather to help people who are having problems with Quadras. I've
been in the computing industry since the early '80s and have racked up
a lot of time with personal computing. I've found that in
troubleshooting a problem, I ask myself "Have I dealt with this
before?". In eliminating possible suspects, I usually like to see if a
similar problem has occurred regardless of platform or OS.

Now that I know that this list is only limited to a discussion of only
"experiences with Quadras need apply", I'll happily go into lurk mode.

Hi NO I DID NOT! mention anything about any other Mac I asked if there was
any better app than apple video player to render video.

As it happens I do transfer the files via ethernet to my Ibook then burn
them to cd but this is a Quad list and the ibook part is not the part I
wanted to know about,

It was the 840 AV involvement to capture the raw video from camcorder.

Anyway to put this thread to bed now I have received a lot of advice off
list about things to do so Thanks to all that sent me the bits .

There aren't any multi-protocol clients for anything under OS X, AFAIK.

The only two chat protocols supported on 68Ks other than IRC are AOL IM and ICQ.

2003-01-19 Thread Jeff L.
Hello all,

I am looking for Yahoo Messenger or alternative that will work on a Mac

I would also appreciate any sort of multichat tool that combines AIM, Yahoo,

OS 7.5.5.

All help appreciated!

adapters for the 660AV PDS that turn it into a normal 040 PDS slot.

I think part of the reason this came up was that in her initial post, she
mentioned the files going "over ethernet" to another machine with a CD(or
was it DVD, don't recall at the moment) burner which means she either
has an upgraded mac, a newer mac, or a PC, all of which are probably going
to encode the file faster just through brute force.

I don't recall right offhand if it's the same one that fits in the 660A/Vs,
but I pulled one (spare) out of its angle bracket, and removed the endplate
- it fit a Q700's PDS slot, though it (just barely) doesn't fit the Q700's
case. I recall a site saying someone had put them in, but he had to butcher
the inside "framing" of the case top (er, side) to get it to fit.

The other versions of that card incorporate the very same card, but add an
extender for the (single) connector, which extender also provides some
mechanical support for the card.

As the connectors are readily available, you could make your own functional
extender, using a blank NuBus slot cover. The card wouldn't be as well
supported, but it would function as well.

The connections are one-to-one.

At the very least you need to go re-read the list FAQ at

Re: 840av

Quadra, Quadra, Quadra! This is the Quadlist, not the G-List, X4U, or
the Eagle Scout attorney-badge list.

USB devices, OS versions after 8.1, FireWire and iMovie are N O T among
the options available to Victoria. Victoria's options are limited to
those that will run on a 68040 AV Mac*.

Victoria:

Everything to do with video on your AV Mac is based on QuickTime. You
haven't said what version you have installed. Compression speed might
be helped by using a different version of QuickTime or installing one
of several hardware accelerators that plug into the AV slot, such as
the various Spigot cards.

Other (QT based) software that can be used to capture and/or compress
video include such things as Avid VideoShop 3, Adobe Premiere 4.2,
Fusion Recorder, etc. The best thing to do is learn about the Q840AV,
what it can and can't do and what resources are available to you.

There are several good articles on the 840AV and its capabilities on
. Search for 840AV. There is also a web site devoted
to the AV Macs at UC Berkeley:
. And, there is a mail
list devoted exclusively to AV Mac issues, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
You may be able to subscribe to that list by sending it a message with
just "subscribe" (without the quote marks) in the subject and body. If
that doesn't work, instructions are found in the AV Mac FAQ and/or one
or more of the Low End Mac 840AV articles and links.

*Not literally true, as she has at least one or more PCI PowerMacs,

I once saw a WWW page that had info about using one in a 650; try googling for
it. Sorry I can't be of more help than that, but I know it definitely works.
The biggest problem is cabling, because the 610s are the only ones where the
card actually sits against the back panel. Running cables into the case for
the others (as the 040 PDS isn't always accessible from the outside) can be
problematic.

I know of one video card, and the WGS95 had a SCSI card in the PDS, but other
than that I haven't heard of anything.

I'm afraid that fact it is only a 68040/40MHz means, despite the AT&T
66.7MHz DSP chip, that it needs all it's power to digitize video. The
vast majority of the CPU time consumed is actually I/O from the RAM to
the disk that it is recording to. Either way you will still not be able
to use it if you use Adobe Premiere 2, 3, or 4, Avid Videoshop or
anything else. It's the actual process of digitizing and saving to disk
that is taking up all the CPU cycles, not Apple's software, which use
very few CPU cycles on an 840av when it is just displaying video from
one of the ports.

Re: 840av

2003-01-19 Thread Mark Benson
My advice is that if you have an iMac or something for burning or even
a 604e PowerMac that you capture raw files on the 840av and then copy
them over ethernet to the better machine and compress them on there.
The time is probably comparable to what it takes to compress MPEG on an
840av, and you can watch the video for proofing straight after you have
compressed it. It is also easier to find the speed and disk space
required on newer machines for multiple, copies of one file.

Victoria,

As I stated earlier, I never had any luck with the VBII. I'm using a
Flat Panel Mac with 768MB of RAM and it, too rendered my Mac useless
and at times completely froze up while trying both 9.2.2 and 10.1. I
recommend saving up for a firewire solution, but as far as software is
concerned, I can't help there. I use iMovie which works fine for me.

Re: 840av

2003-01-19 Thread victoria.duggan
Hi All I did was plug in the video lead from the camcorder and start apple
video player and the mac does the rest.
It gives me two control panels, video and video selection with s-video
/stero/ video.

I just choose the one I have my device plugged into. My only question was is
there a faster one because my 840AV is rendered useless whilst doing video.
