Can't see why it wouldn't, as a fairly large number of the 630-series boards
actually had the second one installed.

NeXT keyboards on Macs?

2003-01-28 Thread Jeff Walther
Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 21:42:12 -0500
From: Robert J. Johansen [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: NeXT keyboards on Macs? (FAST answer needed!)

Dear Quadraphiles:

I'm hoping for a FAST answer to this question, so if you could reply to me
directly as well as the list (I'm in Digest mode) that would be great!

Are NeXT keyboards compatible with, or can the y in some way be made
compatible with Macs, particularly Quadra-era 68K or 1st generation PPC Macs?

Some NeXT keyboards are ADB and some are not. I have a couple of
NeXT keyboards and the model number on them is N8001. These are ADB.
They are an extended keyboard (with keypad) but lack all function
keys (F1 - F15). This makes them narrower (less deep) than other
keyboards. The keys function properly as you would expect. The
command key is below the space bar as a second bar, which takes a
little getting used to, but I find it nice, as so much ported PC
stuff requires a CMD-click to substitute for a right-click and it's
easy to just let the thumb do the double duty of space bar and CMD.
The thumb is underutilized in a traditional keyboard.

Und zey coome in black. (old gaming comic strip reference)

Re: 8.1 boot floppy - how?

2003-01-28 Thread Todd Felmly
I don't need an 8.0 boot floppy - I have OS 8 on CD and have created the
floppy. I just need some way to get my NEC 3xp cdrom drive to work in
8.0. The cd-sunrise extension detects the drive when booting with the
floppy, it just can't read the OS 8.0 disc.

I guess my question should be - why can't I read the OS 8.0 cd when I
use the 8.0 boot floppy? The system says it can't read it and it needs
to be initialized.

Basically it states you will need at least 32MBs of RAM for a RAM cache in
order to burn safely.

When that article was written, that was good advice, because Toast wasn't as
efficient and CD burners had little or no built-in cache.

I have *never* used a RAM cache over 8MB for Toast, and I've not yet had a
coaster. I know plenty of people who've used SE/30s to burn at 2x with no
problems at all without using anything more than the built-in RAM cache on the
CD-R drive.

OK, this is what I did:

I booted from the HD into 8.1. With Extension manager, I turned off
EVERYTHIHNG (control panels, extensions, etc.) _except_ for the
cd-sunrise extension. I rebooted the computer and the only thing loaded
was that single extension. When I put my OS 8.0 cd into the drive, it
came right up.

Sooo it appears that this single extension is the only thing needed in
at least 8.1. Is there something different between 8.0 and 8.1 and how
it handles CD's?

Also, my system is 8.1. Why can't I just create a boot floppy with files
from this system?

The 8.x boot floppies are special stripped-down System/Finder combos that do
little else besides boot and allow the launching of an installer. They're made
with a special Disk Copy script on the CD, and you probably need an 8.1 CD in
order to make an 8.1 boot floppy.

New idea!...

Since the sunrise extension is working on the 8.0 boot floppy (it's
detecting the drive), I think the OS can't read the format of the CD. The CD
is an ISO9660 disc and I see an extension on the HD that says ISO9660 ... I
put this extension which was marked as being an 8.1 file onto the 8.0 disc
and it didn't work probably due to the differences in version numbers. I
found an older one on Apples FTP site which I will try tomorrow (bed time
now). Sound possible?

Thanks again.

Todd

Why is your OS 8 CD an ISO 9660 CD?

Hello all,

I am new to this group and have joined because my girlfriend has a

What do you guys think? If you would like to know anything else

Thanks,

Unfortunately, a Quadra 950 isn't particularly collectable yet. They're not
quite in the Very Old status yet :)

They tend to go for $10-$40 or so, depending on exact configuration, but
they're a brick to ship.

Now, if it were an original, in box, never used, mint condition 128k
Macintosh, on the other hand... ;)

LC 575 Mobo connector pin schematics

2003-01-28 Thread Lou Hailey
I need to know which pins on the Mobo edge connector are for CD Audio In.

Would like to reconnect the (now external) CD Audio back to the 575's
Mobo, as it's new home is in a cute little Color Classic.

After a Google search I tried to log on to an Apple Developer site for
schematics, but was 'forbidden. Shucks!

Thought I'd seen a schematic, of sorts, on one of the CC upgrade links,
but am unable to locate it now.

The info is just probably in my face on the LEM site somewhere, but
obviously I'm too dense to find it.

Any leads folks?

Thanks,

Lou
