My name ain't Neal, but I've gotta bring up the question, What can I do

Last week of 2005 I took my last Q660av (the one equipped with the SPRO)

got as much out of that one as was possible. That leaves my last Quadra,
the Q605.

It is so very cute! That's why I can't part with it yet. 68040 w/FPU;

Re: [q] 840 AV

2005-01-04 Thread Michael Emery
GDB-BW-X.3.7 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Can anyone tell me if and why this machine is
supposed to be better than a beige G3 with a Wings
AV card for audio work?

I dunno nothing about that, but John Wang's AV FAQ http://
www.sims.berkeley.edu/%7Ejwang/cgi/av-faq/ alleges that the AV Quadras
are perhaps better at digitising audio than the 1st generation PowerMacs,
such as the 6100:

The 660av and 840av [...] provide 16-bit stereo
sound input and output, with sampling rates of
22.050, 24.000, 44.100, and 48.000 kHz. Found in AV
and non-AV Power Macs alike, the Audio Waveform
Amplifier and Converter (AWAC) chip performs nearly
the same 16-bit I/O functionality, but with the
22.050 and 44.100 kHz sample rates only.

Wang also says that his FAQ does not attempt to include G3 PowerMacs in
its purview:

This FAQ does not directly cover Power Macintosh G3s
with the AV Personality card...

That's all the direct answer to your question that I can provide. In the
FAQ you can read Ben Denckla's more detailed analysis of the audio
capabilities of these machines.

And then:

I'm in the process of digitizing all of my old
record albums and I want the best setup I can have
for ease of use and quality.

When you're through with that, can you come over to my house and convert
*my* albums? ;-)

Is there a such a thing as an optical ADB mouse?

A company called Mouse Systems of Fremont CA marketed a pair of optical

the Little Mouse because it is small and cute.

These pointing devices are VERY COOL. They work with a reflective, metal
mouse pad, are long-lasting and maintenance-free, and very accurate.
Mouse Systems no longer produces these, but they do appear on eBay
occasionally. Of course, I've hoarded a couple of sets for my personal

Director and VideoShop are two apps that do two *different* things.
Director is for making animations and VideoShop is for editing QuickTime

FWIW VideoShop is probably easier to master, even on your machine. For

Definitely not for capture, and even for Mac video

will be much better.

I missed the original post, and therefore the actual context of the
original question, but I might suggest that a hardware solution could be
one of the Radius Nubus capture cards, such as the Spigot Pro AV, that
captures video at about 30 frames/second in a 320 by 240 raster. Consult

Whats the best software (that will run on my 840AV)...

I guess you're concerned with rendering speed.

Most all of the available titles work well enough. Some are easier to
use, such as QuickTime Pro v4.03; I would not even know how you could get
this legally anymore.

While most software works, none will work any faster than another. The
Q840av is doomed to be only as fast as it is. If you want to use your
network with some flavor of G3 or a 1st-generation PowerMac with a G3
upgrade card, you will do more work in less time. You would also need to
run that software on the G3.

So, find what software works for you -- I like Fusion Recorder and
VideoShop -- then think about a hardware upgrade to run it on.

You must have made a typo when you typed SPAV handles

You got it right, Rob, and I got it wrong. The SPRO does 24-bit.

I assumed that the Spigot Pro AV was in the market
before the Spigot Power AV due to the fact that the
840av was in the market before the Nubus Power Mac AV's.
But I didn't buy either one when they were new... I
assumed that the Spigot Power AV (Mark Benson mentioned
it by name) was what Radius called the Spigot Pro AV
once they added the cable.

SPAV led SPRO to the market, and by the time the SPRO appeared for about
$1000 it was soon abandoned by Radius which went through a corporate
reorg. They left the SPAV and the SPRO on our doorsteps, like abandoned
babies.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-03 Thread Michael Emery
Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

The SpigotPower AV's were the later ones sold for the
PowerMacs. The only difference between the two, AFAIK,
is the little ribbon cable required on the PMacs.

The SPAV preceded the SPRO to market in actuality. And by the time the
SPRO appeared, it was soon regarded as obsolete compared to what the
competition had on the market -- poorer quality full-screen video, not
compatible with the then-new Macs on the market and such. However, it's
sorta fun to tinker with still.

Notwithstanding the little ribbon cable, the BIG DIFFERENCE is that the
SPAV handles 8-bit color and the SPAV handles 24-bit color. That would
make the SPRO superior to the SPAV, yes?

My setup will record 640x480 NTSC at 30fps, but I just
have problems always getting output from Spigot all the
time.

The older apps might work better for you, but QuickTime is a mighty
equalizer too. I would expect your capture card and its output to be
universally compatible.

2003-01-02 Thread Michael Emery
Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I've got a SpigotProAV. This indeed works with the older
Quicktime versions available, but the later versions
(5-6?) complain about the lack of a CODEC to view the
file. On a machine with QT4 (I think), it wouldn't show
the video, but the audio was intact...

I have never even tried QT5 or 6 with the SPRO. There might just be some
breakage between those two latest versions and the hardware/software
designed for QT2, my guess.

Are you using Spigot AV Extension v1.1? That's what you need.

I use Fusion Recorder now. It seems to be OK, I was just
wondering if there was something else available.

Radius also made an app called VideoFusion for sale. It is one of many
apps that can possible record video. I happen to have several potential
apps archived, but it's not likely that they'll ever see any use by me.

I was quite happy to continue running OS 8.1 on this
machine, but I have thought recently that running 7.5 or
7.6 might be a little better from a performance
standpoint.

One would think so. But what I've seen is that 7.5.3 erupts in stalls
while using some of this capture software. 8.1 is much more stable and
user-friendly, I've found. Yet, by going with 8.1, I can't use some of
the older software that sorta runs in 7.5.x and breaks in 8.1. :-(

I should try 7.1 someday.

What are the best apps for digitizing video?

Fusion Recorder is a good one. I believe there is a download link at the
AV Quadra site: http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~jwang/cgi/av-faq/. If
that fails, let me know and I'll send you the stuff.

I'm running 8.1 [...] The last time I tried to run an
older OS, it complained about my 4 GB SCSI drive, being
too large. Is there an easy way around this?

You can reformat your drive into smaller-sized partitions. This might be
a bit inconvenient for you right now, after you already have stuff set up
for your convenience on one 4GB partition.

Once I've got the video into the computer, are there any
good utilities to convert the video to a newer video
codec? Most newer apps (including QuickTime) don't want
to read the Spigot's Interlaced jpeg format.

What kind of Spigot card do you use? I have a SPRO (Spigot Pro AV) that
works fine from 7.1 through 8.1. It requires an extension to make it work
well with QuickTime.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I figured since it
was already being discussed...

Answering your query is a pleasant diversion from eating New Year's food.

spouse is pre-internet; right nowshe has a 660 on her desk for computing
with.

They are quite useful to me. With the one, I edit together a weekly
preaching the Gospel show -- by the late Bro. Bill Jones, not me --
that travels to a radio station in Africa and another station in Panama.
And with the other, I hope to someday put together an edit of my niece's
wedding video that I shot.

There's some hunt left in them old dogs! I give yours the three-finger
salute!

Re: Spigot Power AV Problem

2002-06-08 Thread Michael Emery

Mark Benson [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I have a Jackhammer NuBus card with the 2 9GB drives
attached...

Do try it with the Jackhammer stuff completely disabled. The SPAV likes
to write to a single spindle drive.

BTW are we talking Q840av now?

Re: Quadra 605 Portrait Display

2002-05-19 Thread Michael Emery

Me:

How do I make a Q605 drive an old BW Apple Portrait
Display?

Clark Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Plug it in!

I have tried that, but it never seemed to do the trick -- until today!
Bumfuzzled but nonetheless pleased. :-)

Re: mail client

2001-07-15 Thread Michael Emery

Elaine M. Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I am looking for a *very* stable e-mail program...

Eudora Light is still free to use:

http://www.eudora.com/download/

Also free is Claris Emailer v1:

http://www.mac.org/internet/emailer/Claris_Emailer_1.1.sit.hqx

I used to use Eudora Light, a dependable and versatile performer. Who
knows why, but eventually I migrated to Emailer v2 which is not for free.
It's more fun to use than Eudora.
