Re: [q] 840 AV
GDB-BW-X.3.7 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Can anyone tell me if and why this machine is supposed to be better than a beige G3 with a Wings AV card for audio work? I dunno nothing about that, but John Wang's AV FAQ http:// www.sims.berkeley.edu/%7Ejwang/cgi/av-faq/ alleges that the AV Quadras are perhaps better at digitising audio than the 1st generation PowerMacs, such as the 6100: The 660av and 840av [...] provide 16-bit stereo sound input and output, with sampling rates of 22.050, 24.000, 44.100, and 48.000 kHz. Found in AV and non-AV Power Macs alike, the Audio Waveform Amplifier and Converter (AWAC) chip performs nearly the same 16-bit I/O functionality, but with the 22.050 and 44.100 kHz sample rates only. Wang also says that his FAQ does not attempt to include G3 PowerMacs in its purview: This FAQ does not directly cover Power Macintosh G3s with the AV Personality card... That's all the direct answer to your question that I can provide. In the FAQ you can read Ben Denckla's more detailed analysis of the audio capabilities of these machines. And then: I'm in the process of digitizing all of my old record albums and I want the best setup I can have for ease of use and quality. Re: 840av
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: Whats the best software (that will run on my 840AV)... I guess you're concerned with rendering speed. Most all of the available titles work well enough. Some are easier to use, such as QuickTime Pro v4.03; I would not even know how you could get this legally anymore. While most software works, none will work any faster than another. The Q840av is doomed to be only as fast as it is. If you want to use your network with some flavor of G3 or a 1st-generation PowerMac with a G3 upgrade card, you will do more work in less time. You would also need to run that software on the G3. So, find what software works for you -- I like Fusion Recorder and VideoShop -- then think about a hardware upgrade to run it on. - Michael Emery -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]: You must have made a typo when you typed SPAV handles 8-bit color and the SPAV handles 24-bit color. You got it right, Rob, and I got it wrong. The SPRO does 24-bit. I assumed that the Spigot Pro AV was in the market before the Spigot Power AV due to the fact that the 840av was in the market before the Nubus Power Mac AV's. But I didn't buy either one when they were new... I assumed that the Spigot Power AV (Mark Benson mentioned it by name) was what Radius called the Spigot Pro AV once they added the cable. SPAV led SPRO to the market, and by the time the SPRO appeared for about $1000 it was soon abandoned by Radius which went through a corporate reorg. Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video
Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]: The SpigotPower AV's were the later ones sold for the PowerMacs. The only difference between the two, AFAIK, is the little ribbon cable required on the PMacs. The SPAV preceded the SPRO to market in actuality. And by the time the SPRO appeared, it was soon regarded as obsolete compared to what the competition had on the market -- poorer quality full-screen video, not compatible with the then-new Macs on the market and such. However, it's sorta fun to tinker with still. Notwithstanding the little ribbon cable, the BIG DIFFERENCE is that the SPAV handles 8-bit color and the SPAV handles 24-bit color. That would make the SPRO superior to the SPAV, yes? My setup will record 640x480 NTSC at 30fps, but I just have problems always getting output from Spigot all the time. The older apps might work better for you, but QuickTime is a mighty equalizer too. Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video
Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I've got a SpigotProAV. This indeed works with the older Quicktime versions available, but the later versions (5-6?) complain about the lack of a CODEC to view the file. On a machine with QT4 (I think), it wouldn't show the video, but the audio was intact... I have never even tried QT5 or 6 with the SPRO. There might just be some breakage between those two latest versions and the hardware/software designed for QT2, my guess. Are you using Spigot AV Extension v1.1? That's what you need. I use Fusion Recorder now. It seems to be OK, I was just wondering if there was something else available. Radius also made an app called VideoFusion for sale. It is one of many apps that can possible record video. I happen to have several potential apps archived, but it's not likely that they'll ever see any use by me. I was quite happy to continue running OS 8.1 on this machine, but I have thought recently that running 7.5 or 7.6 might be a little better from a performance standpoint. One would think so. But what I've seen is that 7.5.3 erupts in stalls while using some of this capture software. 8.1 is much more stable and user-friendly, I've found. Yet, by going with 8.1, I can't use some of the older software that sorta runs in 7.5.x and breaks in 8.1. :-( I should try 7.1 someday. -- Michael Emery -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video
Happy New Years, Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]: What are the best apps for digitizing video? Fusion Recorder is a good one. I believe there is a download link at the AV Quadra site: http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~jwang/cgi/av-faq/. If that fails, let me know and I'll send you the stuff. I'm running 8.1 [...] The last time I tried to run an older OS, it complained about my 4 GB SCSI drive, being too large. Is there an easy way around this? You can reformat your drive into smaller-sized partitions. This might be a bit inconvenient for you right now, after you already have stuff set up for your convenience on one 4GB partition. Once I've got the video into the computer, are there any good utilities to convert the video to a newer video codec? Most newer apps (including QuickTime) don't want to read the Spigot's Interlaced jpeg format. What kind of Spigot card do you use? I have a SPRO (Spigot Pro AV) that works fine from 7.1 through 8.1.
