Confusion and ClarisEmailer
I'm sending this Email to both PowerBooks list and Quadlist. I just realized that Claris Emailer has been filing PowerBooks emails in the Quadlist folders, as some of you may have noticed strangely worded emails. Its because I have CE's Mail Actions set to file anything with the word quadlist in it into the Quadlist folder, and same for PowerBooks. I see now I should change that. ** Lots of hellos from Dan Palka's Quadra 800: The power to be your best. ** -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Confusion!
where the confusion comes in for, in his reply Jag wrote, FWIW, I wouldn't recommend surfing on a 68k Mac to my worst enemy- it's simply a waste of time. snip Having to use a 630 on my desk at work, I can tell you that the state of browsers for Mac 68k is disgraceful. There's no really good reason why these browsers should be SO slow. I have used a web browser on a 486 called Arachne running under DOS, and its twice to three times the speed of anything on the a Macintosh which doesn't have a PPC chip. And that browser does support graphics, tables, etc. etc. That being said, it is possible to browse the web on a Mac 68k machine (I do it every day). Here are some suggestions: If you don't need secure connections, and are connecting to sites which aren't graphic intensive use Netscape 2.02 with defrost. Its faster than any other browser. But, like all Netscape browsers if you hit a modern site with CSS or intense formatting, the browser chokes hard on the stuff it doesn't understand. Netscape 2.02 will just crash. Under Netscape 4.08 (the last browser that works on a 68k Mac) it can mean many minute waits. It doens't crash the browser, but it will cause it to enter into looping error modes that take forever to recorver from. Meaning you're sitting around with the machine seemingly locked up until it finally grinds out the render (sometimes even the clock stops). In a similar vein you can also use Cyberdog 2.0. Its actually a nice little browser, and doesn't seem to choke like Netscape. Its funky though in how it renders pages. If you do want modern support, ICab is your only choice. It supports everything, and renders very beautifuly. It also doesn't temporarily halt at stuff it finds confusing (like Netscape). That being said, don't expect a speed demon. I've seen starfish move faster than this browser does on complex sites. But say you don't need much in the way of graphics, and stuff, and just want to get to the meat of the subject. My favorite browsing tool of all is a browser called Wannabe. It doesn't do anything but display the text of the web page, but it does make for a very pleasing experience to have your pages display in a timely fashion. Now there are also some tricks to speeding up these browsers. The most popular being to store your browser cache in a RAM disk. It can significantly speed up your experience. It made ICab fairly tolerable on my machine. But, I have personally found that it tends to make for more crashes. Now, I might be doing it wrong or something, but I found that I couldn't live with the instability that this particular trick gave. A nice trick about ICab is that you can just about turn off every feature of ICab individually. I found that once you have almost everything turned off (including graphics) that it made this web browser rather spry. That being said, I figured if I didn't want any graphics I might as well stick to Wannabe anyway since Wannabe still wins in speed because it doesn't format the text. I hope this helps out. I'm sure I'll get some disagreement on my opinions, but they are what they are. Having to use a 68040 based machine every day, I just wanted to let you know that browsing and a significant amount of work can be done. That being said, don't expect it to be like browsing on other machines. The Macintosh browser scene seems peculiar in its lack of quality support for 68k machines. David P.S. Another web browser that is pretty cool in Lynx. Its text only like Wannabe, but has more features and render modes. There is a 68k version that some French guy had up for a while, but I've lost track of where you can get it now. Its main problem is that its a port of a UNIX program. Meaning its about as un-Mac-like as a Macintosh program can get. Still, it might make for a good compromise between the bare-bones Wannabe browser and a more featured browser like ICab or Netscape. I find Netscape 3 works for most of the sites I want to visit, and is acceptably fast - even with my 33k modem. Ian -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Lynx is ok, but there is a better text mode browser, it's called Links and it renders sites correctly unlike lynx, and has frames support, very fast even on old hardware! who wants gfx anyway. Re: Confusion!
Links may be more feature-rich, but I wouldn't say it was better. In my experience, lynx will render anything - it may not render it as you want, and obviously it doesn't frames, etc. BUT it keeps going. I have found links to be pretty good at crashing if you point it at a complicated page. Re: Q800 Confusion
I am trying to bring my old Q800 up to operating condition. Previously it was used for a recording studio (Pro Tools) running on 48MB RAN OS 7.5.1 -- it sat for a number of years, but fired up with no problem. It has a stock HD and came with a Toshiba CD-ROM (X340--probably not a full product id, but pretty much close). It is managed by CD Toolkit 1.5.2. If I leave CD Toolkit on, I get a start-up message from CD Toolkit saying something to the effect that ...CD Toolkit has a problem with the way the CD was masteredproblems at the end of the data... Underneath that is the warning that this disk cannot be read by this MacIntosh. Any thoughts or ideas? All help will be appreciated. My first impulses are that your CD-ROM Toolkit extensions are screwed up somehow, and that the CD-ROM isn't compatible with the version of AppleCD that 7.5.3 installs. Try http://www.macdrivermuseum.com/disk.shtml to download slightly newer versions of the AppleCD driver that should stand a pretty good chance of working with your CD-ROM. Do I scrap the idea carry on using the PC or do I try with the Mac, or do I say 'Sod it' look for a G3 or something? Comments, please! Rog Barclay, Scotland. Well, I use a Performa 575 with iCab and it is sometimes slow, but it is definitely not a waste of time. I wonder where the limitations really are. I have a 56k modem. Most of the time I run it at 33.6 because I can't stay connected at faster speeds. I have wondered about DSL, but it seems like on most web sites there are bursts of modem activity, followed by 'long' pauses while the computer figures out how to render the page. I can see how a faster connection would make a difference on sustained transfers, but how much would it help for typical browsing? There are things that I haven't been able to do (at least not well). These are low priority for me, but I have visited sites that required them and I was curious. Sometimes it's hard to find a 68k version and even when you do, the standard that sites are using has superceded it. One example is Apple's Quicktime movie trailer page. Other examples include: Windows Media Player Shockwave Real Player Audio Like so many things computer related, whether or not you will be happy surfing with a 68k, depends on what you plan do with it, what your expectations are, and your tolerance for experimenting. For me, the fun in using a 68k is seeing just how far I can get with it. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Q800 Confusion
There is a long story |snip|... Since I was not much of a Mac expert in the past, it took me a while to realize that I could not just drop in my OS 8 CD and load it up. I have successfully updated it to 7.5.3 using the downloads at the Apple site (19 diskettes took up most my afternoon yesterday, @56k). I thought perhaps the newer OS would facilitate the use of the CD ROM. If I leave CD Toolkit on, I get a start-up message from CD Toolkit saying something to the effect that ...CD Toolkit has a problem with the way the CD was masteredproblems at the end of the data... Underneath that is the warning that this disk cannot be read by this MacIntosh. I tried using the C key at start-up with the OS in the CD Drive; obviously, with no success, since it is a Toshiba. I tried the same holding down the command-option-shift-delete key. I have tried it with CD Toolkit enabled and disabled, with only the Apple extensions and control panels. I thought perhaps there might be some suggestions as to what I am missing on this list. At the end of all of this, I would just like to have this little computer out there running on 7.6 or 7.6.1 or 8 or 8.1, with access to my little network of other happy macs, and run some nubus hardware that extends my old studio operation. I have not even tried to hook the stuff back up, because I wanted to get the base computer in shape first. Any thoughts or ideas? All help will be appreciated.
