RE: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 saloon needing new home

2023-07-25 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi Ken
Can you let me know the registration of your car so I can check to see if your
car is on the clubs list of known cars.
Sent you a email a few days back but presume you didn’t get the email.
My Email is
quantumhistor...@btinternet.com

if you don’t want the details of the car in the public domain.

Good luck with your sale as red is by far the best colour that suits the
quantum saloon & such as shame you are having to let it go.
I know how it feels as I had to let my quantum 2+2 a few years ago & regretted
it for years after.

I'm in Reading.  A scrappy has offered £600

RE: [Quantum Owners] ULEZ compliant?

2023-05-03 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
Just checked mine and the saloon registered Dec 1987, according to DVLA, built
on a 1987 E plate donor, currently on a dateless vanity plate, is not compliant
for any of the ULEZ/LEZ.
My other classic, registered June 1976, which is registered as historic & MOT
exempt is also showing as none exempt from the TFL ULEZ charge.
Not likely to ever go anywhere near London but a concern as the amount of zones
spread.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] ULEZ compliant?

Planning a trip to London in a modern tin box, we checked to see if the car is
ULEZ compliant (no real surprise that it is)…. Just being curious I entered the
Quantum registration number to find it was also compliant! This is a huge
surprise, as it is a 1987 donor with a CVH engine and E-prefix registration
number (albeit V5 says ‘first registered 2009’ when it was SVA’d). It would be
interesting to find if other Quantums get the same result 

RE: [Quantum Owners] Engine mount Timing side

2023-04-24 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
No the rubber parts do not remove normally. The top upper engine mount require
a couple of modifications.
It requires one of the tabs cutting off and a small extension welding onto the
bottom of the mount so the lower mounting hole is moved onto the welded
extension piece.

The mounts were normally exchanged by QSC when the kit was bought but the
change is not that big even if you need to pay someone to modify the mount for
you.
Best using your original as a template.

The  mounts on this are all shot. I've got two new gearbox ends sorted but the
main mount is modded compared to the xr2 according to Sb.

Do the rubber Interbals come out of standard mounts to fit into the modded
units?

Thanks

RE: [Quantum Owners] Radiator

2023-04-24 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
We used rivnuts on the rad mounting flange, needed a couple of holes drilling
in the rad flange but plenty big enough and nice thick alloy on airtec rad, so
the mounting bolts can be accessed from the engine bay side doing away the need
to try and get hands inside the nose cone area.
Yes the airtec radiator goes through the opening easily.

For the radiator the one we had on the car when it arrived was very much a case

clear it had been leaking for quite some time and well passed its best.
We got a alloy uprated radiator from Airtec which needed a few adjustments to
how it was mounted.
Original was fastened on from the engine bay side where the thicker airtec was
too close to the downpipes so had to be mounted from within the nose section.
Easy to do and can still be removed without taking the nose off.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Radiator

2023-04-21 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
For the radiator the one we had on the car when it arrived was very much a case
of very few fins left and looked ok ish from engine bay but other side it was
clear it had been leaking for quite some time and well passed its best.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Sump or crank seal?

2023-04-21 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
As Jim says changing the sump gasket with the engine in the car can be a
character forming job.
We have done it and if that’s the only reason for engine out I would have a go
with the engine in.
While you have the sump off give it a clean up and check as they love to rust &
cause a oil leak.

What's people's opinions then? Before I go all out and take the motor out.

I will avoid it if needed of course as I'm already behind and have a job lined
up hopefully in a week and a half.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Wheel and Tyre fitment 15 " 7 wheels and14s...and Hello :)

2023-04-21 Thread 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
We never went as wide as 7. The ones we used were 6.5 or 6 wide.
Current ones on mine are 6 with a offset of 36
Best width wheels for 195 tyres are in the 6 to 6.5 range to keep the sidewalls
at the best angles.

When buying the new wheels for the saloon I was tempted for going bigger just
for the looks but arch gap and tyre profile then start to look a little silly.

If your car has been fitted with lowering uprated springs best bet is to get
some standard xr2/normal fiesta front springs and if you can find some a set of
standard 1100 fiesta rear springs.
Of all the rear springs we tried the 1100 rear springs were the sweet spot for
the last quantum.
On the xr2 originally the front spring rating was not that much higher than a
standard fiesta but the rear xr2 springs were a lot higher rating. Not that
many xr2 or quantums will have the originally fitted springs now anyway.

We did lots of testing with wheel sizes when we had a 2+2.
It originally came with the factory recommended 14 inch wheels with the factory
recommended sizes, it was the factory demo/brochure car so was still fitted
with the wheels from the brochure photos.
We tried wheel sizes from 13 to 16 inch.
For comfort 13 inch were by far the best for comfort but the wheels looked too
small and the handling was the worst of all tested.
The stock size it came with was 14 inch, it was fitted with the ford lattice

For us for road use 15’s fitted with 195 45 15 tyres is the best compromise of
looks, easy to get tyres and good road manners.
When we tried 16’s they were very very harsh and on a track superb but for road
use a step too far.

When I bought my saloon it was fitted with 15 wheels, ford style again which I
didn’t like as too modern, so bought a new set of wheels for it.
The wheels bought were 15 inch using the same logic that applied to the 2+2.
Fitted with 195 45 15 there has never been any tyre rubbing even with 4 people
and the dogs in the car.
In my experience the brand of tyre can effect the way the 2+2/saloon drives
almost as much as wheel size.
When I bought my saloon it had 15s with 195b 45 unbranded tyres and the ride
was quite harsh yet when fitted with the new wheels which are the same size
apart from 2mm less offset fitted with toyo tyres and the ride is much better.

the registration and chassis number of your saloon to

[Quantum Owners] Request by QOC historian for Quantum Saloon information

2022-09-13 Thread Paul Laters

Hello everyone

I am the historian for the Quantum Owners Club & am current updating the
QOC records for the quantum saloons.

I took over the position of club historian a short time ago and in that
time there are three main questions asked by new owners.

Those are:-

How many were produced?

How many are left/How rare is my car?

How many are on the road?

The first is easy to answer but the second and third are not so easy to
answer but the more quantum saloons that are on the list of cars the more
accurate the answer becomes.

I started updating the records with the saloon as I am slightly biased
being a saloon owner myself & had already been scouring the internet for
quantum saloon details to see if I could get a picture together of how many
quantum saloons are left and how many are on the road.

Can owners of quantum saloons please get in touch & let me know the
registration and if possible the chassis number of your car/cars.

If you do not want the details in public I have a email you can contact me
with the details.

quantumhistor...@btinternet.com

Currently the updated QOC list for the Quantum saloons is just over half of
the production run of cars but I am hopeful that more saloons can be added
to the list with the help of owners.

In this day and age I doubt there are many quantum saloons on the road that
have not been photographed and appeared on the internet or social medio.

There will be some but a small number.

Its the cars people own that are mid restoration or awaiting work that will
not have been photographed.

Even if you used to own a quantum saloon can you let me know the
registration so I can check to see if it is on the current list of cars.

Any questions please let me know at the above email address.

Once I have gone as far as I can go and exhausted the search for quantum
saloons I will be moving on to the other quantum variants & doing it a
single model at a time.

Thank you

Paul

We used 17.5mm rear wheel brake cylinders when we changed them on the saloon
here.
The ones fitted when it was built were 17.5mm.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Brake Servo Problems

2022-09-08 Thread PAUL SLATER
At least they did put some paint on them which beats some of their products today. But do agree would have been sensible for them to use a brake fluid resistant paint not the same stuff they have used for eternity. The compbrake setup is IVA compliant as long as the bias bar is dealt with as per current IVA guidance once setup.Current IVA guidance is any bias brake setup has to be welded once set and pinning or lock wire as used to be allowed is no longer. (service brake control/ mechanical components) 09b in current IVA manual. Removing the servo is the main advantage to the compbrake setup I don’t see it as a issue at all.Insurance company were more than happy with the compbrake setup with no extra charge but were less enthusiastic other options.   Sent from Mail for Windows From: Jim HearneSent: 08 September 2022 16:59To: quantumowners@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: [Quantum Owners] Brake Servo Problems The would be more servos around if Ford had thought to paint them with paint that was brake fluid proof. The comp brake bias setup won’t pass a IVA test so don’t use it on a car that needs a IVAAnd you do loose the servo. Jim  From: 'Paul S Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2022 4:52 PMTo: quantumowners@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: [Quantum Owners] Brake Servo Problems We grew tired of the original servos failing. We went down the compbrake bias brake setup which is a bolt on conversion that

Not cheap mind but a permanent solution plus has the added advantage of cheap

Unfortunately parts for both setups are vary hard to find.

If you have the ability to fabricate parts then there are various upgrades that

[Quantum Owners] Re: Saloon metal structure replacement

2021-11-07 Thread 'PAUL Quantum' via Quantum Owners Group
There has been a discussion recently on the facebook group about corrosion
of the metal sill structures on the cars & I used a endoscope to examine
the inside of my saloon sills metalwork.
I've tried posting to the google groups a few times & it didn't work so
have created a new email & hopefully this will work this time.
The examination took place through the seat belt mounting hole and the hole
where the seat belt lower bar goes into the sill.
A good examination of the inside can be done via both holes once the
seatbelt bolt and lower bar is removed
[image: os.JPG][image: weld1.JPG]
Luckily it looks like it was possibly galvanized by the factory & is in
good condition. The A pillar supports also have very little corrosion but
it does seem to be a bit of a lottery as to if they are rusty or not.
But it does look like there is evidence of a weld being done on the
metalwork before it was fitted into the car. Weld seems to be in same place
on both sides of the car.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Ventilation

2021-03-30 Thread Paul Laters
As Jim has said Waxoil should really be kept away from fibreglass where
possible.
I have a similar wireless type endoscope so will be having a look in the
sills of my saloon just out of curiosity more than anything.
On the subject of ventilation my saloon has plastic vents in the door shuts
but it also has a small inlet, at a guess, on the bulkhead in the engine
bay.
I have had a look through lots of photos but not seen anything similar
fitted to a saloon. There is evidence of a pipe being fitted at some point
though nothing fitted to it when I bought the car.
I was thinking that it was some sort of air intake pipe for the heater in a
similar manor to the much larger pipe the 2+2 has.
I will try to get a photo of the area a little later.

2021-03-29 Thread paul slater
Tried to reply to this subject yesterday, hopefully post will work today.Just to echo Jim’s comment Waxoyl should be kept as far away from fiberglass as possible. My saloon has a small pipe stub mounted on the bulkhead. There is evidence of there being a pipe on it at some point though nothing is mounted to it now.I presume its a air inlet for the heater in a similar way to the 2+2 that has the much larger air inlet pipe over one of the wheelarches.I will get a photo of the pipe stub  Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: mgaskin via Quantum Owners GroupSent: 29 March 2021 12:33To: quantumowners@googlegroups.comSubject: RE: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Ventilation Hi Bill, Many thanks for this reassurance. My Q is absolutely fine further back – the patch is small, only at the front, and only visible on the outside. Does anyone have a working email to contact Nigel Plant?

[Quantum Owners] Saloon boot gas rams supplier.

2021-02-09 Thread Paul Laters
Does anyone know of a supplier for the correct gas rams used to keep the
saloon boot open?
The ones currently fitted have no markings as have been re painted mat
black at some point.
Would prefer to get some of the correct type before I start searching for a
alternative type.

Thank you for the photos. They show where its picked up the small amount of damage to the nose and sill sections at the lower edge as all intact in the photo with white wheels. Also shows what has been worked on recently too. Getting a list of part together that I know it needs,Need to find out where the gas struts for the boot come from as they are past their best and don’t hold the boot open anymore. Many thanksPaul  From: Dave EnglishSent: 07 February 2021 21:21To: Quantum Owners GroupSubject: Re: [Quantum Owners] Looking for information on Quantum Saloon Hi Paul. Haven't got anything on the E-bay seller I saw but here's some of the photos I picked up. RegardsDave EQ2-009  -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Quantum Owners Group" group. To post to this group, send email to quantumowners@googlegroups.comTo unsubscribe from this group, send email to quantumowners-unsubscr...@googlegroups.comFor more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/quantumowners?hl=en IMPORTANT NOTE: All information presented herewith is provided on an "As Is" basis, without warranty or the implication thereof. Hi Jim
thats a name I remember from when I owned my 2+2.
Nice to see some familiar names appearing despite it being nearly 10 years
since I stupidly sold my 2+2.
The car is on the south coast & no I wont be able to pick it up so it will
be transported to me.
I have spoken with the seller & have seen photos of the v5c with the name
and address of the seller visible.
I have arranged for the car to be delivered with it hopefully arriving
sometime in the next week.

I have just checked on the is it taxed website which shows the date the
last v5c was issued.
It shows as 02/02/21 which is the day I decided to buy the car.

thanks
Paul

Re: [Quantum Owners] QOC membership

2021-02-04 Thread Paul Laters
Hi Jan
Superb scanning and email would be the easiest option for me at the moment.
Can I have the email address to send the scanned pages to?
I can't remember how I used to pay for my membership back when I had my 2+2.
Fingers crossed my Quantum saloon should be getting delivered sometime in
the next week or so.

thanks
Paul

[Quantum Owners] Looking for information on Quantum Saloon

2021-02-02 Thread Paul Laters
Hello I used to own a 2+2 a few years back which ended up being sold due to
growing family.
I've been in the position now that I can now have a hobby car again &
bought a classic car to mess with.
Looking through car adverts came across a listing for a quantum saloon.
The 2+2 is one of a few cars I really regretted selling & really do miss
the car.
The saloon is red with a chassis number of Q144

The car is at the other end of the country to me so if I bought the car it
would be bought via socially distancing & transported.
There is very little history of the car on mot history but from the photos
it does look quite tidy.

Is the car known within the club?
thanks
Paul

[Quantum Owners] Castle combe action day

2017-07-05 Thread 'Paul' via Quantum Owners Group
Ok folks

You may have read about it in the last QM but Castle Combe action day is
coming up on 22 July. I have some passes for the show but currently not
many left. I have requested some more from CKC who are helping organise it
but they have not got back to me yet. Any one who has spoken to me and I
have confirmed, has a pass. If you want to come please contact me. You can
always pay on the gate to get in

The plan is going to be we will meet in the Wickes car park (DIY store
post code SN14 6LH, unit 1 bumpers farm ) in Chippenham which is off the
roundabout where the A420 and A350 cross.in Chippenham at 9am. There is
butty van in the car park. If you already have your pass you can make your
own way to the circuit. I do not know the QOC stand number yet but last
year we just told the marshal at the gate and they pointed us in the right
direction. Wickes is about 10 to 15 mins from the circuit. If you can not
make it there contact me and I may be able to put a pass in the post. If
you are coming let me know so we have an idea of numbers. .

For more info check out the Castle Combe circuit website or any of the kit
car magazines. Remember you can take your car in the track if you want but
you need to book with the circuit direct it may be possible to book on the
day but this depends on spaces. QOC can NOT help with track bookings.

my contact details are in QM if any one needs to get in touch. See some of
you there.

Paul

[Quantum Owners] Xtream clear windows

2013-05-13 Thread Paul
Hi all.

As promised some notes about the polycarbonate windows that i have fitted
to the side screens on the Xtream. There was lots of interest at Stoneleigh.

I have removed the orginal side screen tops and replaced them with
Polycarbonate so there is an unrestricted view out of the side. i have to
be honest it is great like driving with out the doors on. The view is
excellent.

The material i used is 4mm Lexan polycarbonate with margard scratch
protection. The company i found to make them are ACW motor sport in Nailsea
near bristol (no presonal interest). i saw them at a mini show a couple of
years ago. It has taken this long to get organised. Tony is the man at ACW
i have since spoken to him so he will be aware if you call about Quantum
Xtream doors. Contact details are below he is very helpful and has had kit
cars in the past.

I made templates out of hardboard and ACW cut them and polished the edges,
they will drill the fixing holes if you want or leave you to do them. The
cost was £100 but there are various options which can make it cheaper or
more expensive. You can have them with out the scratch protection and they
can also get 5mm if you want them thicker. They can also get tinted if
that is what you want. Call Tony to discuss it.

I will write an article for QM with all the details but this should get
most people going. I have only had them on a couple of weeks but love the
solution already. Be aware i have had to fit a bar to strengthen the
section from the fibreglass door bottom section to the hinge on the frame
as with the 4mm it was bending more than i liked. I will be fitting a full
length bar which will finish it off and look better. I like all kit car
items it is still work in progress.

If you have any questions you can give me a shout on here or my details
are in QM i am the treasurer.

Cheers Paul.

[Quantum Owners] Re: ECUs

2012-09-26 Thread Paul
My Xtream is running the older Omex 500 which i don't think you can get any
more, but there are places around for the rolling road, i used a place
north of bristol 1st then after the changes Mark at Q. i have the software
to connect to it as well, but do not mess with it as it all looks a bit
complicated. Omex seem to have concentrated on Ford engines as there stock
engines direct from the factory are Ford. There are aslo various items you
can connect to it if you need extra info.

Hi Paul

I will check for you on the prices of side stripes when I get in.

It may be of some interest to owners, that you no longer have to have
blue black or red stripes. Although all pod those colours can be done,
i can now getjust about every colour done you can think of.

I am not sure yet, but it may also be possible to get colour fading

Update you later with the prices.

Hi, just got my 2+2 on the road for the first time. I have fitted the 1600cc
cvh engine, with what was sold as a sports exhaust. Dislike the loud exhaust
note, can any one recommend a quiet exhaust for this engine. I believe the
original xr2 exhaust was quite loud. Rgds Paul.

2.0 Zetec, stage 3'd ported and polished head, oversized valves, heavy
duty valve springs, Kent FZ2002 fast road/rally cams, piper vernier
pulleys, fully lightened and balanced crank and fly wheel, lightened
and balanced pistons with each bore bored to exact piston size etc.
All built by Specialized Engines on a new engine, apparently only run
for 8k since build (and I had no reason to doubt him), have various
other parts that can go with it too including a complete other 2.0
zetec with ecu, ancillaries and throttle bodies etc that has done apx
60k. Cams alone cost £450, I need the space and cash so will let the
two engines go to a Quantum club member for £750 no offers. Just a

 your street...

At the moment, everything seems to turn, but how freely should this

What other checks can I do ideally without taking the head off ?

[Quantum Owners] Earth fault

2011-03-29 Thread Paul
Hi there can any one give me some ideas

It is the wifes Mini ( proper mini not BMW). The car been have battery
trouble for most of its life from information for the last owner and
trouble we have had when it is stood up for a while. The car has been
off the road for some months due to welding, which is all sorted now.
But when i charged the battery up and connected it all together
various items did not work, well after much checking with the meter i
now have all items except the fog light working (not a fuse problem as
other items on the circuit are working, lamp also OK), but the off
side front head and side light is dim while the near side is full
brightness. I have been round and checked and cleaned all the earth
points i can find and checked continuity is ok from the lights, engine
and colum stalks. For some time the red igntion light comes on but
this seems to better since changing the altinator. Is there some
system or logic i should follow to try and fix this this?

Thanks in advance.

Have you bent the angle into the wiper arms so they lie parallel with
the bottom of the screen? The blades are 10 inch the same as a mini.
Make sure the blade fits fully down into the socket as it can be very
close, i broke a set after removing the winscreen once and putting it
back in a slightly different location. Do you have the bottom rail for
the windscreen as this will affect the height.

Hope this helps

 Hi All,

I have a set of 4 off 7Jx15 ET37 OZ Supertourismo alloys going spare
if anyone has a use for them. Came from my 2+2, so have the standard 4-
stud 108mm PCD Ford fixings. Not bad condition, need some scratches
touching up, but not corroded. No tyres.

Removed from the 2+2 because they were too big and caused fouling
problems. Definitely too big for the saloon and hatch. May fit an H4
 or Extreme??

I'll put them on E-bay, but, if anyone wants to offer me £80 for them
first? They probably weigh in at £10 each for scrap! May even be able
to deliver, if you live on the route between Yorkshire and Reading.

 Dave.

But- DVLA (Borehamwood) who told me 2 months ago they could inspect

They also now have a new V55 form with more technical boxes e.g.
Wheelbase size.. (nothing not available from IVA results), and
apparently I will get a letter telling me how to get the car to them
without a the need for a trailer or a tax disk .ploy to get me
out of the office, or a 'new way of working' ?

P.S. I remember someone discussing about LED's and if they are
accepted by VOSA- I have them for side repeaters now on the wheel
arches - no problem with the flash rate (front and rear are normal
bulbs) or intensity or angles of visibility.

[Quantum Owners] Re: xtreme engine mounts

I have the 1.8 silver top zetec and as i remeber from the build i used
the engine mounts from the donnor which was a CHV 1.8 sierra. I did
replace with new the gear box mount as that seemed very soft. Gearbox
mount came from Quantum, but is a standard type 9 sierra mount as i
compared it to the original.

[Quantum Owners] Parts

2010-08-02 Thread Paul F
Can any one help with a couple of questions after a trip to the local
scrap yard at the weekend.

I am still after the 2.0 cam and throttle body increase for my 1.8
zetec(98). i found a H reg XR3i with CHV engine. Is that the same
throtle body? and will it work with the 1.8 to give more air? Or does
it need to be from a sliver top zetec only?

There was also a scorpio 2.0 (i think) N reg with what looks alot like
the sierra diff that is on the xtream. Can any one confrim they are
the same. As if so i think i will get that as well. It is the one with
the bolt on drive shafts, so i am not sure if they will fit to the
xtream hub/wheels?

Any advice greatly recieved Then i can get back there.

Cheers
Paul

The CVH throttle body is different, you need one from a silver top Zetec.
If you are using the plastic manifold then this was only in the Mondeo 2.0

I don't know about the diff.
