Just another thought on the fuel.. How old is the fuel? This 'modern'
petrol doesn't last well and if the car hasn't been used for a few months the
fuel may have separated into a horrible mess of 2 layers which look like
wallpaper paste and water!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I suspected that the slightly different
part numbers might be due to slightly different internall arrangements!

The car started spluttering while cold, i.e. after only a few miles.
Sometimes it would stop as though the handbrake had been violently applied. But
then would start again. Finally, on my way to a QOC committee meeting
(ironically!) it stopped and would not start. A few hours later after the
meeting the car started immediately and drove home, about 6 miles from where it
had stopped with no problem at all. This is when I decided to replace
everything, except the distributor itself. So the fault is most certainly not a
loose connection, faulty HT leads, faulty coil, faulty distributor cap, faulty
ignition module, faulty plugs or rotor arm as all were replaced with new. From
then on the car will not start at all and is still in the garage. There is a
spark at the plugs and from time to time while turning over the engine it will
fire, or backfire just the once. Both engineers who looked at the car agreed
that the problem is timing. I've tried rotating the distributor through the
full range from fully clockwise to fully anti-clockwise but that makes no
difference. I've got a month to solve this - I WILL be at Stoneleigh in this
car!!!

A possible next step is to put the originals back and see if it starts. If it
does I can replace each old item with the new one until it no longer starts.
That would tell me I have the wrong new part!

The distributor is not the type with a long shaft and a gear at the end. It's
the other type, no shaft but 'dogs' (I think that's what they're called) to
connect to the engine, pic attached.

IMPORTANT

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-30 Thread KCBob
In the dim and distant past I had a 1986 1400S Mk2 Fiesta that developed a
similar problem; above about 2000RPM it would run without any problems but
below that it would only run for 10-20 seconds before cutting out, a check
of the fuel supply found no problems and check for a spark at the plugs
also revealed no problems. I was told that there were some problematic
distributors that had "internal problems", I was loaned another distributor
and this worked without problem. Unfortunately I can't remember which make
of distributor it was but there were two different lengths of distributor
(mine was the longer one) the trial one and the replacement I bought were
the shorter ones and came with a replacement/extension piece to ensure that
the wiring loom could still reach the new dizzy. This made no noticeable
difference to the running of the car and the problem did not return (I sold
the car a few years later).

A fuel blockage was where my questions were heading as well.
A lot of dirt in the fuel line can pile up against the fuel filter when the
engine is running but then fall away when it stops, allowing the engine to
start again for a bit.

Is there an inline filter in the fuel supply to the carb ?

This may be a silly suggestion but have you checked the fuel supply?

I recall a couple of similar situations which were eventually solved by
cleaning out an inline fuel filer that had become clogged causing
intermittent fuel supply.

Apologies if you have already covered this.

Adrian makes a good point. An ignition fault won't usually be so severe to stop
the car, as the engine tends to 'diesel' to some extent. A sudden (brakes on

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-30 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
My Wife had a Volvo when I met her (and the relationship survived!). This car
was out to get me On one occassion the RAC rescued it and took it to a
garage local to where she was living. I gave them a call and explained I'd
replaced all ignition parts with Lucas ones (it had what appeared to be an
ignition problem). They reported a while later that the ignition timing was
about 20 deg out. They reset it and that weekend she drove to mine, and a
couple of miles away it was only just about running. The next day I checked it
and the timing was out again. I traced it to the bob weights in the distributor
- the grease on them had solidified and they would sometimes return to the
'start position' when revs went down, sometimes they wouldn't. A clean and
oiling had them working well again. I don't know how easy (or dificult) it is
to get inside the distributor Mike, but may be worth investigating?

This may be a silly suggestion but have you checked the fuel supply?

I recall a couple of similar situations which were eventually solved by
cleaning out an inline fuel filer that had become clogged causing intermittent
fuel supply.

Apologies if you have already covered this.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-29 Thread Jim Hearne
The slightly different part numbers will have different mechanical and vacuum
advance characteristics to match the engine capacity, camshaft and carb used on
that engine.
But in practice a distributor from any other 1.6 CVH will work well enough.
I seem to remember the Bosch distributor is a lot more common and as long as
you get one from the post 1985 XR2 (before that they had a short distributor
with a separate ECU) you should be able to interchange that with the Lucas
distributor as a complete assembly.

The only part left in the distributor is the magnetic pickup itself, these can
fail.

When does it cutout ?, when cold, hot, under load, idle etc
And then, when does it eventually restart ?

Update:

After the cutting out problem I bought all new parts: coil, all HT leads,
ignition module, distributor cap and rotor arm. Last week I called out a car
electrics man who said everything looked OK, maybe the cam belt had slipped. I
said in that case it would not have started ever again until it was put right!
A colleage of his (Ford trained mechanic!) turned up, removed the cam belt
cover and stated that everything was correct. The only thing left would appear
to be the distributor itself. He told me that some Fiestas of this vintage
needed a new distributor when less than two years old as this was a 'known
fault' in that car.

As mine has screws to hold the cap in place, not clips, that makes it a Lucas
not Bosch. I know there are weights and springs inside, but I am still trying
to find if the slightly different part numbers are all interchangeable or if
those numbers designate different types of spring and weight - if that is the
case only the correct type will work.

I tried the local Ford Main dealer and spoke with someone who has 30 years'
experience with Ford spares. His computer was unable to find my car due (I
think) to their database only going back to some point in time after my Fiesta
was built. Next step must be the Fiesta Owners Club. Surely they have people
who love XR2s and know where to source the parts that go wrong?

This is turning into a saga that might well end up in the next magazine once I
have all the useful info to help anyone else with this problem!

I should add that during testing there was a spark from the coil and also
at the plugs, so both engineers concluded that the problem was timing as
there was plenty of fuel present. Sometimes the engine 'tried' to start and
once it backfired.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-28 Thread Jim Hearne
If the engine has a distributor it won’t have a crankshaft position sensor,
they are only used on cars with distributorless ignition.
I’ve had random cutting out on a couple of 80’s Fords caused by rust on the
ignition coil low voltage connections.
Ford used push on connectors onto the threaded steel plated studs, the studs
rust and cause a poor connection.

Unless you can see anything obviouse (eg black 'tracking' or burn out contact

cheaper (just as easy?) to get one of those and fit to the part you have.

had not seen a pair of screws to hold the cap before - so mine with the screws
must be Lucas. Are they completely interchangeable? There seem to be many types
available on the usual websites but as soon as I try to specify the exact one I
can't find one like that.

Does anyone know if they are all more or less the same and it doesn't matter
which one you use, so long as it has the same fitting? Does a recon one come
with an oil seal? Presumably a new one does? I have till the end of next month
to get this car going, I don't want to go to Stoneleigh in my tin top Suzuki!

  Thanks again, Mike

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-28 Thread russell

I've had a similar fault on my saloon with the car cutting out twice when
pulling away at a roundabout. The first time I accidentally fixed it when
making sure
everything was tight, no fuel leaks etc, the second time I realised it was the
ignition lead from coil to distributor had pulled out slightly due to the lead
being a little
short and a bit of movement in the engine mountings. In true DIY fashion it
hasn't been fixed as now I know what it is and just push it back in.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-28 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
The fault might simply be that the lead into the top of the distributor cap is
working itself loose. Using a company car I had the embarrassing experience
of calling the company workshop staff out on a 30 mile return trip at 10.30
p.m. as I was returning from a meeting in the Midlands. The engine had cut out
and I had coasted to a halt at a dangerous point where the road passed an
airfield.

The fitter arrived sometime around 11.15 p.m. opened the bonnet, pushed down on
the lead in the socket on the top of the distributor and said, 'Now try it', it
started and ran faultlessly all the way back to the Ford Research and
Engineering Centre where the car, and I, were based.

As I expect you have been told already the connection to the crankshaft
position sensor is also a potential trouble spot.

Unless you can see anything obviouse (eg black 'tracking' or burn out contact
on cap) it's probably the black unit on the side, in which case it's possibly
cheaper (just as easy?) to get one of those and fit to the part you have.

Unless you can see anything obviouse (eg black 'tracking' or burn out contact
on cap) it's probably the black unit on the side, in which case it's possibly
cheaper (just as easy?) to get one of those and fit to the part you have.
