If the engine has a distributor it won’t have a crankshaft position sensor,
they are only used on cars with distributorless ignition.
I’ve had random cutting out on a couple of 80’s Fords caused by rust on the
ignition coil low voltage connections.
Ford used push on connectors onto the threaded steel plated studs, the studs
rust and cause a poor connection.

As I expect you have been told already the connection to the crankshaft
position sensor is also a potential trouble spot.

Unless you can see anything obviouse (eg black 'tracking' or burn out contact
on cap) it's probably the black unit on the side, in which case it's possibly
cheaper (just as easy?) to get one of those and fit to the part you have.

Thanks everyone, and specially Chris. I'm familiar with the spring clips and
had not seen a pair of screws to hold the cap before - so mine with the screws
must be Lucas. Are they completely interchangeable? There seem to be many types
available on the usual websites but as soon as I try to specify the exact one I
can't find one like that.

Does anyone know if they are all more or less the same and it doesn't matter
which one you use, so long as it has the same fitting? Does a recon one come
with an oil seal? Presumably a new one does? I have till the end of next month
to get this car going, I don't want to go to Stoneleigh in my tin top Suzuki!

  Thanks again, Mike

My 2+2 has a 1.6 CVH engine from an XR2. Intermittently it will stop and
usually start again running normally. A bit annoying! I've been told by a Ford
trained mechanic that the distributor in the Fiesta was unreliable and there
were many failures even in cars less than three years old. Does anyone know of
this? From one website I discovered that the correct distributor is a Bosch
type 0 237 521 019 but I can't find one of those. The Haines manual says Bosch
or Lucas but gives no part number.. Nearest I found was type 0 237 601 001,
Ford part number 84SF 12100 FA.

Has anyone had a distributor problem with this engine, and what type did
they use to replace it? It might be that the two types I've mentioned are
effectively identical or there might be sufficient difference that while the
one I can find will physically fit it won't work properly or even at all!
Advice please so I can get going again!

    Many thanks, Mike
