I don't know about your housing.
But I know they used to make colored tires (not the ones with the white
sides, that's on the outside, the rubber itself was colored) and they
posed to be less durable.
But that's kind of a special case that had to do with the soot they use
to usually make them which seems to be a particularly good filler (and
doesn't go well with colors).

Well, iPeng is doing something like that even now, yet it doesn't
compensate for volume ramps.
This will never really be perfect since most amps and speakers also
won't really have a strict linear or logarithmic volume level response,
yet it would be good to be able to compensate for the bigger
differences.

Right now I just do an average of a linear and a relative change
(linear meaning +1 volume would increase volume on each device on a
"Squeezebox" level 1 tick and relative would mean a 1% change would
change the volume on each device by 1% of it's current level) which
works remarkably well considering the fact that the underlying volume
ramps are probably dramatically different.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Waking up with Last.fm - no alarm menu

2009-10-19 Thread 0xdeadbeef

Ok, now that it happened four times in a row, I'm, sure that this an
issue that not happens by chance:

I'm currently using the Radio to wake me up with Last.fm. And while the
music starts playing at the correct time, the snooze/off menu is not
shown. Instead the Radio displays the main menu. Furthermore it doesn't
respond to the knob and also doesn't display the screen saver. Even when
I turn the Radio off and on again, still the main menu is shown and
doesn't respond. Only if I press back/left I can move the cursor again.

I would suspect this is the same issue I described in
[URL=https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14766]Bug 14766],
apart from the fact that I don't press any button to reach this
unresponsive state.

Also this happens only the first time in the morning. If I program
further alarms to reproduce it, it doesn't happen. I suspect that this
only happens after a longer period of inactivity for whatever reason.

I have similar issues with the pre-set buttons - they somehow loose what
is stored behind them!
e.g. I store one radio-station => power off and on the SBR => preset is
not available any more
also when I change from SBS to mySB I have a similar effect

but I also figured out that this does not happen with all
radio-stations

Yep, I've seen exactly the same thing. My normal behaviour is

* at night put on random album mix, volume in the 20s
* set sleep for 60 minutes

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sync is very slightly off.

2009-10-19 Thread DigitalMitch

Conflakeguy,

read the following error cases carefully. I can't say that sync is
flawless, but when it is working (99% of the time), I can't spot any
timing difference between my players. The 1% is below ..

Ikabob, Matt,

I also see occasionally sync. issues, which are normally provoked by
some other event and then leave one or more players off by between 0.5
and 2 seconds. The player then stays that way, even if stopped started,
etc. but will re-sync perfectly when power-cycled (via mains for
SB3,Boom and SBR, the Radio via press and hold standby).

Cross-fade is always set to 'none'.

For me, the problem was most noticeable on 7.3.3 and I suspect was
aligned to the rebuffering problem
(https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13092) which was reduced
by upgrading router firmware and almost eliminated by using Homeplugs
instead of wi-fi.

With 7.4 production, I have mothablled an SBR (and iHome clock radio)
and replaced with a Radio, which is currently running wireless (in
anticipation of battery and mobility).

When I then use SqueezePlay Beta, I have problems connecting to my
library (some days fine, others awful). Whilst Squeezeplay is trying to
connect the existing sync'd streams stutter (as they do when a new
player is added). Just tried to replicate using Squeezeplay to provoke
but it wouldn't find server and sync was undamaged, will try again
tomorrow.

I concur with Matt, in post #15, somehow a player (or more than one)
gets into a state where it is out of sync and is only reset by
power-cycling.

I dug anyway. It looks like the "Squeezebox" name currently defaults to

running as:

udhcpc -R -p /var/run/udhcpc.eth1.pid -b --syslog -i eth1 -H Squeezebox

I kludged around it by changing the /etc/hostname file and rebooting.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sync is very slightly off.

2009-10-19 Thread toby10

Ikabob: Try streaming the same station(s) you are having sync issues
with on MySB using SBS, see if the sync is maintained tighter.

My guess is you are experiencing "drift" on MySB. Unless they changed
how players function when synced on MySB, here is the difference between
SBS and MySB sync when playing a radio stream:

SBS: server gets a single stream, shares it with all synced players,
better sync
MySB: each player connected to MySB gets it's own unique stream even
when "synced", not so great sync (i.e. drift)

Put another way: If you are streaming a 128k radio stream to four
"synced" players:
SBS = 1x128k stream via your ISP, shares this single stream with four
players, ISP usage = 128k
MySB = 4x128k = 512k, each player getting it's own unique stream, ISP
usage = 512k

Fair enough. I have concerns about Squeezebox Radio based on some of
the initial feedback about the quality of the hardware itself. I know
that Sean and company used to obsess about providing rock solid hardware
AND firmware/software for their product. I doubt Logitech has the same
fanatical attention to detail.

I'll give another example... Harmony. Logitech bought Harmony and for
a while all was good. Then they started to greatly cheapen the
construction of the devices, to the point that I've literally had five
different Harmony 880 remotes replaced during warranty due to the ultra
cheap construction quality. Additionally the new product the Harmony
700, which has replaced the 880 is apparently a total piece of junk with
cheap buttons, no charging cradle, etc.

I guess you could say I don't have warm fuzzy feelings about Logitech,
they are harlots. I do have warm feelings about Slim Devices though,
it's too bad that they got acquired by Logitech is all.

Speed seems fine to me on wifi. I think the color screen is much better

not noticeable to me.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Power down/Sleep?

2009-10-19 Thread mmca22gr

Most days when I come home the SBRadio often has a blank screen and I
have to hit the power button to get it back up again. I have asked my
wife if she presses and holds the power button, but she swears that she
does not. Does the Radio go to sleep after a preset time? I can't see
anything in the SqueezeServer settings.

If on Battery, Yes.

I have a PB1 Beta so I can't speak to the production model's behavior
when on AC Mains. My PB1 stays on all the time when on AC as long as I
don't press and hold the power button. When left On, it goes to Clock
Screen Saver when not playing and left alone.

Wild guess is that it has lost a connection to the server.
Next time you encounter this just turn the Volume knob, see what
happens. If it immediately jumps to the connecting *spinny* then this
is indeed what is happening.

I leave my Radio on for days and it always has a screen showing, but it
sometimes will have self rebooted or lost connection to the server after
a while.

Power cycling is basically turning it off, waiting for a little while
(depends on device, but 30 seconds is more than enough), and turning it
back on. As DigitalMitch said -"(via mains for SB3,Boom and SBR, the
Radio via press and hold standby)"-, meaning you should physically
unplug an SB3, Boom, or SB Receiver, for the simple reason that they
don't have on/off switches.

On the SB Radio, make sure you hold the on/off/standby button (lower
right) long enough that it completely powers off. Or simply unplug that
just like you do the rest of the gear.

Mine seems fluid at present, although I also see the short delay when
pressing the power/standby button. Does it seem to happen with some
commands/menus in particular (eg, those showing album art, or those
where a long artist list is being generated), or is it all of them?

How are you navigating the menus, with the knob or with an IR remote
from one of your other SBs? I don't know why it would make a difference,
but thought it would be a good idea to make sure we are talking about
the same thing. I use the knob exclusively -- the screen is so small
that I have to get up close anyway.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] For those of you thinking about returning your Radio ...

2009-10-19 Thread ccrome2

Guys,
For the most part, it's the same people that brought you the Boom,
Classic, Duet, that brought you the Radio. We do obsess about this
stuff, believe me. Or ask my wife -- or any of our wives. We spend
obscene amounts of time trying to get things right. We're all very
proud of the Radio, although there are some issues we still need to deal
with.

Remember, the Squeezebox Classic (and thus Boom) had several years to
mature to get to the point its at now.

We didn't go the cheap route on just about anything. Well, I guess
button backlights got cut due to cost, but really, there's not much else
(You wouldn't believe how much it costs to make backlit buttons).
Audio didn't take *any* cut at all. Moving to a color LCD is
*definitely* not a cost reducing measure. It's a feature increasing
measure. Adding battery support is definitely not a cost reducing
measure. Once you get a battery, you'll wonder how you got along
without it.

There are certainly some enhancements that we should put in the
software to make things easier and better, but the idea that we are
cutting corners in the design process is simply wrong.

Please, give us a bit of a break, let us fix up the issues that you're
worried about. We're worried about them too. We care.

-Caleb

Sleep doesn't seem to be significant in my case. If you play the radio
at all between setting the alarm volume, and the alarm actually firing,
the alarm seems to inherit the radio volume settings.

Tell you what.

Since I own the radio, I don't like the Boom anymore :)
I really miss the LCD and volume knob already there ... backlight ok -
bit difficult the first two night, but now I know where the important

my wife surprised me today as she told me she listened today to the
boom (second time) - controlling it via the controller as she couldn't
get used to the booms menu.

So we both are LCD-addicted already !

So I can't wait to get the BOOM-LCD upgrade :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] For those of you thinking about returning your Radio ...

2009-10-19 Thread gdpeck

I think from a hardware perspective the Radio is fantastic. I think
there is a ton of attention to detail, and the sound quality is
phenomenal for a device like this. Because of that, I probably won't
return it.

>From a software perspective I am very disappointed. The main reason for
my disappointment is the (lack of) alarm functionality. I know that it
is possible to make a fantastic computerized alarm clock. Check out the
iPhone/iPod Touch Clock app if you don't believe me. It admirably
performs the core function of an alarm clock (waking me up), but it also
adds great value and flexibility in the way it wakes me up. I can set as
many different alarms as I'd like, and have complete control and
visibility over all of them. I also know that when I set an alarm on my
iPod Touch, it will get loud enough to wake me up. In contrast, the SBRs
alarms are:

1)too loud or too quiet (alarm volume doesn't work)
2)unpredictable due to the fact that when you set an alarm whilst
connected to mysb.com, it doesn't always sync to squeezebox server. The
reverse is also true.
3)unwieldy. you have to navigate several menus to set an alarm from the
device. there is no indication of what time the next alarm will fire,
until you are at least 3 menus deep.
4)not a very usable device for people who just want a beep to wake them
up. BTW, there is an internal beeper for backup when network
connectivity is lost. How about making that accessible as one of the
sounds we can choose? If the alarm volume bug gets fixed, that would
solve most of my problems.

Since having the Radio, I've had alarms not go off, alarms go off when
they weren't supposed to, alarms go off so quietly that nobody woke up,
alarms go off so loudly that we thought we were under attack, alarms
that couldn't be turned off, and a few other issues as well.

The good news is that since the alarms are controlled by software,
fixing these issues should be easy. The bad news is that they didn't get
fixed through the beta process, so maybe it isn't a priority.

I think alarm clock functionality should have been a much higher
priority. Maybe a cloud based alarm clock is an idea whose time hasn't
come yet. An internal device that just works would have been nice, then
add on the ability to play streamed music or talk afterwords.

I think a lot of existing squeezebox customers bought the radio as a
bedside alarm clock, and listening device like I did. I think a lot of
new squeezebox customers will freak out at how complicated logitech has
made doing a simple thing like setting an alarm, like my wife did. I was
hoping the Radio would increase WAF for squeezebox. It turns out to
have done just the opposite. My wife won't touch it, and still uses the
SB3 to listen to internet radio. Plus she's now setting the alarm on her
phone as a backup to the SBR.

I know this is a bit of a rant. To summarize, the Squeezebox Radio has
definitely earned a place in my home. Whether it has earned a place on
my nightstand remains to be seen.

Thanks!
George

[SlimDevices: Radio] Noise when powering off radio

2009-10-19 Thread fredpb

Most of the time, when I power off the radio, a get a loud "farting"
noise. Sorry about that. But that is what it sounds like.
Anyone else get this?

Blame it on the dog?

I def. don't get that (on either beta or production units). Just a
single soft click.

Does it make a difference if your were streaming off your server or
directly off the 'net?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sluggish Interface

2009-10-19 Thread Matt Wise

The LUA SqueezePlay UI work right now is focusing (obviously) on fixing
major bugs... but trust me that performance is always something we're
paying attention to. As Phillip mentioned, a recent update before the
release (r7790) removed some debug code that lead to a huge improvement
in the UI responsiveness and fluidity.

I would recommend two things...
a) its possible that a known memory leak in the Now Playing screen
has lead to your slow UI feel... does it go away when you reboot the
unit? If so, when 7.4.1 is released (very very soon), it should solve
the issue.

b) if the issue is present for you on a fresh-bootup, I'd recommend
taking a small movie of the issues your seeing (most modern digital
cameras can do this for you), and opening a bug @
http://bugs.slimdevices.com with the movie attached. Try to keep the
movie small please.

If the issue is a new one... expect it may take a little while in the
priority list to get to it, but rest assured that as we continue to
develop SqueezePlay-based products the performance, reliability and
"general wow-factor" will only continue to improve.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] For those of you thinking about returning your Radio ...

2009-10-19 Thread unclemat

Frankly, I don't mind hardware much. It sounded pretty good actually.
The only cheap part are the buttons. Not just because of being non
back-lit, but because of rubbery feel further exasperated by laggy
response of certain functions. Also the volume knob felt less solid
compared to the main dial.

I read that high res vacuum florescent displays aren't cheap, and given
mass production of LCDs I thought they may be actually cheaper.

Sluggishness of the interface and amount of bugs made me sent it back.

I just received my second Boom to replace it and could not be happier.
Thanks to Squeezebox folks for bringing such fantastic products to the
market.

This is just the problem that you state above.. "Mine feels QUITE
responsive" I want FLUID menus, with FLUID scrolling. A product from
Squeezebox shouldnt just be "This is the way the new color screen works
(a little bitt choppy)" I will make a movie compareing Classic/Boom with
Radio.

I also noticed that Radio has less settings for scrolling/interface.
Why?

Atbi: I can't see much diffrens when i use knob or remote.

a) No the choppyness stays whenever i reboot the unit or not. Just
compare scrolling from a menu to another with Classic/Boom.

Yes, it's gotten a little bit better with the new 7.5 beta but again. I
want FLUID movment with no choppyness.

b) I will fix a small movie to show the diffrent (i know, some of you
maybe dont think this is a issue, but i always have had products from
Slimdevices that is top-of-the-line and i'm counting on the staff to fix
this minor issue) I understand that right now maybe there are more
importment bugs to fix, but it's good to know that you are working for
that "Wow-feealing" to come back to this unit, so it will be as good as
the other products?

Movie about the scrolling problem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHj1PoaznGA

I will try to file a bug.

Thanks for listing to your users!
