[SlimDevices: Radio] Wireless Help - won't work with WEP

2009-12-03 Thread dklingner

I recently purchased the Squeezebox radio as my third squeezebox device.
Other 2 devices work fine wirelessly.

This device will not connect with Wep security turned on. I spent 1.5
hours on the phone with a technician who knew very little about
networking/device/etc?

I can connect if I turn all security off. Device also works fine via
ethernet?

I have reset to factory defaults. Powered on and off my router
countless times. I have reinstalled the latest firmware for radio twice
at suggestion of Logitech support.
I see lots of other wireless threads with many people having success
in the end.
Is there anything else I should try or is my unit most likely
defective?

Thanks.

Dirk

[SlimDevices: Radio] Stuck Playlist Repeat

2009-12-03 Thread Tony T

Strange problem. I can't change 'Repeat ' (settings -> repeat), its
stuck in 'playlist'
It will briefly switch to 'off', then goes back to 'playlist'
(I've tried re-installing firmware, and a factory re-set)

Has anyone had this problem?

A cow-orker had a similar problem: my question is simple:... "why are
you using WEP?"

WEP is -trivial- to compromise and has been so for years.

The only reason you should use it is if you have something on your
network that absolutely needs it: and even then, I would discard the
device... since that makes everything on your network sniffable.

The only "no known exploits" wireless protocol right now is WPA2/AES.

Can you move to that? If so, I would. Problem solved and you'll
actually have security.

Again, WEP can be broken in less than a minute.

Personally, I need another Remote like I need another hole in my head.
I don't think the Touch should even come with a remote. Only the
Transporter should come with a remote in my opinion. Lower the price on
Boom, Radio, and Touch and only sell the Backlit Remote as an accessory
and a stand alone SB Radio Battery.

If it was my decision or company that is what I would do.

Also, every time I wear out the battery on my SB Radio, I 'HAVE' to buy
another Remote with it? What kind of sense does that make?

The SB Radio battery should be sold as a stand alone accessory for
around 29 Dollars.

One only needs to look at the Forum Users Signatures to know that
"Most" people end up owning more then one Squeezebox once they start
using the products. With the Controller available as well as iPeng for
iPhone and iTouch, many remotes are mainly collecting dust. In the last
month, I can only remember picking up a Remote twice and that was only
to add a Loved track to Last.FM not to control a Player. And if the
WebUI had an easy way to "Love" a track, I wouldn't even have used the
Remote those last two times.

Did I mention the last thing I need is another remote laying around?

I've wondered that myself. Continually charging these batteries would
likely wear them out, no?
Maybe they can implement a "no charge" menu item to disable battery
charging for added battery longevity.
Yes, one could always remove the battery to accomplish this. :)

The Web remote control on mysqueezebox.com allows adding a "Love" track
to Last.fm
iPeng also allows it (at least when connected via mysqueezebox.com)

Hey Tony, Thanks for making me look harder for a means to Love a track
inside the Server WebUI. I hardly ever use Mysb.com, I use the SBS WEBUI
locally. I didn't know that I can click on the song title that is
playing in the Right pane which opens the song in the Left pane and the
first line is "Last.FM: Love this Track". What is that old saying, Learn
something new everyday.

I had either forgotten about this or didn't look hard enough for it.
Again thanks for the nudge.

Now I really don't need a Remote!

If I had a Radio I would definitely need a remote (the Radio would be
sitting on a shelf where I had to lean all over the kitchen table to
operate it), but I would have no use for a battery at all. :)

Chances are, however, that if they were selling the battery and the
remote separately, the battery would still cost the same or even more
than the bundle because two separate products would require twice the
logistics. I guess that is how economy works these days, everything you
buy comes bundled with something you don't need. I cannot count how many
earphones and USB cables I already have.

The built-in SBS is the key feature of the Touch as the alarm function
is the key feature of the radio. So for both devices, the key features
don't work correctly.

Yes, occasionally on station playback, never experienced it on local
music playback.
I presumed it was just a station URL drop or other such

Some people will need a Remote. Some of those already have more SB
remotes then they can use. Logitech already has a Remote for sell that
is separate all by itself so adding a Battery only is about the same as
adding a Battery/Remote package. Either way, still two items with two
sku's, taking up two shelf locations.

In my opinion might as well just be a battery only and a backlit remote
only. That way if I only need a Remote, then buy the Remote. If I only
need a Battery, just buy a Battery. If I need both, then buy both.
Pretty simple and every time I wear out a Battery, I don't end up with
another useless unused Remote when I replace the Battery!

Even if they should dare to release the Touch with software in
pre-alpha state before Xmas, this wouldn't improve the situation for
Radio users as the work on the Touch software will most probably take
another 2-3 months until people really want to keep it.
Dunno if I my patience lasts long enough to wait that long to get the
most basic Radio issues fixed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Wireless Help - won't work with WEP

2009-12-03 Thread danull

I run WEP 64 without issue. Your troubles sound vaguely familiar - I
remember having trouble on initial startup of the Radio because this
radio wasn't behaving the same way as my Squeezebox V3 and my Boom.

When you go to mysqueezebox.com and look at your players does it appear
as connected? If yes, have you tried disconnecting it there? This may
be waste of time but that is what got me past my frustrating hurdle with
playing radio on my network, and since then it's been great.

As for the snarkydwarf's comments - I run WEP too - in my case I figure
if there is anybody insane enough to want to spend the effort hacking
into my network in the middle of nowhere they probably deserve it. It
just ain't worth the time to go mess with 15 of my devices and get them
all converted over to WPA.

2009-12-03 Thread peterw

I hear that! SB Touch should seize this opportunity to make the gear
more zone/sync-friendly. Here's a UI suggestion for Radio: press the
volume knob (which in 7.4 toggles the mute state) and get a screen like

Code:

Volume for synced players
  xx---
  Volume for this player
  xx---
  Volume for Den
  xxx--
  Volume for Kitchen
  -

Use the nav wheel to select a line, and the volume knob to change the
volume of the selected line. Mute is toggled by pressing a knob while a
line is highlighted, so you could easily mute any or all players. Use
three different colors for the volume indicators: one for the whole sync
group, one for the local player, and the other color for each of the
other players. Let users decide whether simple volume knob turns (i.e.,
using the volume knob on any other screen) control local or all synced
players' volumes. If the knob normally controlled the whole sync group,
the first line should be "Volume for synced players". So your typical
volume control would just require turning the volume knob, and the other
normal case would require you to tap the volume knob once to bring up
the special screen, nav down once, and then use the volume knob. Muting
whatever the volume knob normally controls would require two taps. The
"Volume for synced players" indicator would show the average volume of
all players in the sync group.

This should be very doable in an applet. Any takers?

I wouldn't be so sure about needing a remote with the SB Radio. Last
night I happened to grab my Boom remote and try to use it on the Radio
from around 7 feet (2m) and after turning it on it was useless because I
couldn't read the Radio screen from that distance. My eyes are pretty

Hah. I was just writing that the remote does have some use with Radio.
It's worthless, I'll admit, for navigating onscreen text, but for
launching presets, skipping tracks, adjusting the volume, pausing,
turning Radio off, etc., a remote is still nice to have.

Thats a limitation in all squeezebox hardware players and also
squeezeplay.

You can only enter an ip adress as the server adress.
There is an ingnored enhancement req for that.

If your isp can give you fixed ip your ok, or like my isp the IP is
semi permanent they only change it when necessary, not daily or
something stupid like that.

Dont forget to port forward both 9000 tcp and 3483tcp/udp in your
router.

Why ? My theory is that *They* don't "want" to do it as
squeezeboxserver is nothing close to secure, you punch a hole into your
server from the internet.

But thats up to the user imho, there have been discussions on a better
more secure way to do this, I basically wants to eventually have a
player at my Parents place .

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] How do I Connect to Home Server across Internet?

2009-12-03 Thread bernt

There may be a way to do this. Have a look at http://www.neorouter.com.
It has some proxy capabilities.

This may or may not work. Haven't tried it.

Install Neorouter server on any computer (the SBS?).
Install Neorouter client on the SBS.
Install Neorouter client and proxy on a computer at the remote lan.
Point your Radio to the proxy.

There could be other ways to do this i guess. Some kind of routing or
something?

Or vote here.
