[SlimDevices: Radio] Argh! Backup alarm every morning, but streams fine when preset pressed

2009-12-08 Thread CECat

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone

Connected to mysqueezebox.com and all working well for a few days. Set
my chosen wake-up station to my Favorites list. Alarm sound is set to
that station.

Before bed, I play the same station, and tell it to sleep in 30
minutes, which it does. However, in the morning (3rd morning now), I'm
awakened to the backup alarm. Pressing the preset brings the stream up
immediately, so not a connectivity problem.

In addition, I have performed the same test throughout the day, first
sending the radio to sleep and then setting an alarm for a few hours
later. Works fine. I've tried using both "Current Playlist" and the
station selected as a Favorite. Both seem to work (and fail) equally.
Then, overnight, seems to go bonkers.

Anyone have this experience -- or, even better, a fix?

Cheers,
Susan

What is the url/station that you are using and on what hardware
(Win/Mac/NAS?).

For example, there are some particular issues with setting certain BBC
radio URLs as alarms.

If you have a meter, you may want to check the output of the power
supply. If you really are getting no response from the unit, it may be
as simple as a non-functioning supply. Worth a shot and, if is the
case, might simplify the process of correcting your situation.

Try setting the alarm using mysqueezebox.com --> players --> alarm

[SlimDevices: Radio] Seeing presets while connected to Slimserver

2009-12-08 Thread joltdude

How can I see the Squeezebox Radio preset button values when connecting
to my own slimserver.. and edit them... I ended up manually deleting
then my hand off the radio and would like to see/edit them right from
the slimserver directly

Also would like to see/edit the preset button values for the
squeezenetwork server in an obvious place as well..

[SlimDevices: Radio] Menu option or setting to two click line level out

2009-12-08 Thread joltdude

I know its not ideal, but is there an applet/menu setting, that allows
you to set the headphone jack to line level out, then when deselected
the regular speaker volume/headphone volume goes back to the previous
setting.. I hate having to crank the volume to use an external speaker,
only to have it being too high when i disconnect it... even if you had
to just flip a checkbox manually after unplug it would be an
improvement..

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Argh! Backup alarm every morning, but streams fine when preset pressed

2009-12-08 Thread CECat

Station is WCPE, at url as follows:
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s27997&partnerId=16

This is the same stream that alarmed correctly during tests yesterday
at 9:15am and 1:15pm. All other aspects of the test were the same as
the real thing (e.g. played station, set to sleep after 30 minutes, then
alarm to same station).

Not sure I follow the question about hardware, as I'm using
mysqueezebox.com, not a local server. Wireless connection via DSL, 100%
signal strength. No powersavers set on the router.

@Tony T -- have tried that, and also checked to ensure that what was
set on the web interface was also what showed up on the radio locally.
Both match.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Argh! Backup alarm every morning, but streams fine when preset pressed

2009-12-08 Thread CECat

A couple of hours ago, I found that my 1:30pm test alarm, which worked
yesterday to stream the above-listed internet radio stream, is
malfunctioning today. I am now wondering about the stream itself, as
the radio seems to *think* it's playing (screen shows alarm, but no
sound -- different from this morning's backup alarm sounding).

My newest experiment is to use a different stream ...

I now have 3 favorites for WCPE:

1 - the first listed above via radiotime;
2 - the station's direct MP3 stream at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/wcpe/wcpe.pls
3 - the station's direct OGG Vorbis stream at:
http://audio-ogg.ibiblio.org:8000/wcpe.ogg.m3u

Currently, I've played #2, set the radio to go to sleep after 15
minutes, which it did, and am awaiting the alarm to play the Favorite
labeled "WCPE MP3" (#2 above) at 4:30pm Eastern. Of course, even if it
does work, I won't know about tomorrow morning, but if it fails, at
least I can rule that out as the solution.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Imminent Return -- How to Fix Alarms? Search? Tone Controls?

2009-12-08 Thread jef

Ok, I've had SlimDevices products running nicely at home for five or six
years now. The Boom is silly expensive, as is the Radio at $200, but at
$160, I thought it could fill some specific needs. It is failing.

Here are the critical problems:

* Alarm -- fails if Internet connection not solid; backup requires
server

* Search -- How do I just get to "ZZ Top" without wheel-ing through
several thousand albums?

* Tone Controls -- it sounds like a boom-box with flabby bass, no
midrange, and softened treble.

I understand the alarm is a known issue, but that Logi isn't doing
squat until they get their faux iTouch out. Any good workarounds?

The lack of search, is just stupid, especially if you pull in your
iTunes. Not that the iTunes "integration" is any great shakes, but we
literally have thousands of albums. No search for radio stations as well
makes this a non-starter.

Tonal balance has been completely mainstreamed with overblown bass. The
UI shows an equalizer, but you get the same transition effects and
volume adjustment schemes, not any real tone controls.

I'm pissed that you are basically forced to sigh up with Logi's servers
and that the thing "phones home" without your permission on power up.
I'll deal with another bit of Logitech spyware, but a privacy
(intrusion) policy would have been nice.

I have no problem ssh-ing into the thing if that lets me do something
to resolve the problems. Any plug-ins to fix these things?

Any word on alternate firmware? maybe we just cannibalize these things
the same way we do WRT54G routers?

Happens regularly for me, especially if I am sync-ed with one or more of

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Imminent Return -- How to Fix Alarms? Search? Tone Controls?

2009-12-08 Thread 0xdeadbeef

The alarm even fails with a rock solid internet connection. The quirks
of the European MYSB datacenter plus the dynamic IPs used in most
European countries are more than enough to wipe away any semblance of
reliability.

Logitech really screwed this up big time and they are either not
willing to fix this before they have a partly functioning software to
finally sell the Touch or they even refuse to notice the Radio's severe
problems.

Anyway, obviously this blatant showstopper is currently not even
investigated. Dunno how they want to lure people into buying a Touch if
they are obviously not able to design a reliable alarm clock.

Let's just hope that this series of wrong decisions won't lead to the
death of the whole product range. If they follow the current course, it
seems more or less inevitable.

Not sure why you think running own server prevents you from using BBC

Alternative source is Radiofeeds app again from Apps Gallery.

The BBCiPlayer plugin also has latest BBC URLs

It would be nice if there was an option to set a larger, double height

That clock is REALLY small...
It wouldnt be too difficult to enlarge it without screwing up the

option 2) put the Search menu item on your home menu so it's always

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Appears to be playing, but no sound?

2009-12-08 Thread mlsstl

I'll add one more voice to the Radio losing the radio stream for no
particular reason and then not automatically reconnecting.

It is rather annoying to have to turn the unit off and back on just to
get the station back.

I've got good wireless signal in the house so I don't think that's it.

I can understand hiccups in the internet stream but I'd think that'd be
an anticipated event. Seems to me the Radio should just pick up where it
left off when the stream becomes available again but that apparently
isn't the case.

I love the access to stations worldwide, but most of the time I just
want to turn on the radio and listen without having to fuss with the
seeming unpredictability.

A server connection is not required for the backup alarm. If the

it will play a built-in sound.

I've had both my radio and boom play the backup sound without having

Someone would have to build a completely custom version without using
Logitech's code at all, this would be a huge job. The licensing of the
firmware doesn't allow you to redistribute any changes. All
redistribution has to go through Logitech.

Well, the primary function of the Radio is NOT to act as an alarm
clock, this is just a secondary function which it can do in addition to
playing music.

How do you know that no one is working on the problems ?
Just because they haven't released anything yet doesn't have to mean
that no one is trying to solve them.

Well returning might not bee such a bad idea if many customers did it.

Purchasing power is power .

So if one wants to shift logitechs focus from the Touch to fixing
already released products thats one idea.

Anyone got a better Idea, Is somebody here a billionare ? Maybe buy all
logitech stock and tell them what to do ;)

I convinced that logitech would fix this issues soner or later. It is
bad practice to release unfinished products anyway Imho.
And I think it would be a useful learning experience for logitech if
one products could fall flat on it's face for this very reason, this
would benefit future products.

So return it now and buy it again when the situation is better ?

Imho I think logitech should extend the warranty, to soothe unhappy
customers. For example with the time from the release date until the
most glaring bugs and omissions is fixed, reliable alarm ,tone controls
(tone controls are reasonable to expect as the boom has it ? I suppose
radio has the same DSP and digital xo )

Actually, in a way, it is. Lua isn't bad and I can dust off my
manuals.

While there is no way in hell I am giving these as Holiday gifts, there
is some hope that I can at least get mine usable in the three weeks left
on its return window.

The alarm is unreliable and has failed in two different ways so far --
stream stalls and does not restart and stream is unavailable and it
fails to retrieve the default alarm from the server.

And thats why they spent a extra button to the alarm button and
advertize it as a bedside-clock replacement.
For many people the alarm IS essential :(
