Alarm bugs are top of the priority list right now. Please keep your systems up
to date (7.4.2 nightlies) if you want to test the latest improvements.

But that would not do what I want!

I want to play the item I want, not a whole bunch of other items.

What I have to do currently is choose an item, attempt to play it and
get a wrong item, and move through the list till I get the right one.

Inconveient!

My Squeezebox radio runs fine with my QNAP TS-119. You need Squeezebox
Server 7.4 or higher to run the Radio, and you need SSOTS 4.1 or higher
to run SBS 7.4 on the QNAP.

Until BBCiPlayer is implemented on mysqueezebox.com, you will need to
run Squeezebox Server on a local device. This needn't be a PC - for
example, you could use the QNAP NAS as a fit-and-forget solution.

There are other possibilities.

Such as on Beebotron or iplayerconverter which currently provides URLs
for the RealAudio stream but RealAudio will be gone in March 2010 and I
expect these sites will move over to the WMA URLs.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Check/Adjust Alarm Without Blaring Music?

2009-12-22 Thread jef

Here's the use case:

We were play music on our Radio pretty loudly before we went to bed. It
is now 6 AM and my [insert appropriate bed-mate term here] is sleeping
soundly. I need to either
* Check the alarm setting (time)
* Disable alarms since I'm going to just get up early

Past the buttons not being illuminated, how can I do either of these
without turning on the Radio, which will result in blaring music?

Pushing the alarm button doesn't work, as far as I could tell.

Where's the sync setting - on SBS?

I've lost presets (i.e. get a "preset undefined" message) since I
connected my SB Radio to a local SC/SBS and switched back and forth a
few times. I seem to have lost alarm settings too.

Can you see what the presets are set to from SBS - they seem very
similar to Favourites so I wondered if they were just stored favourites
with special names (e.g. "#1")? (adding favourites from the SB Radio
seems a bit limited so being able to set them in SC/SBS would be handy).

SBS > Settings > MySqueezeBox.com > Integration > *do not keep

I'm not aware of a way to see Presets on SBS or MySB.

Favorites can be set from both SC/SBS and MySB, just look for the
*heart* symbol within the UI.

I wondered about that too - if it was under software control perhaps
you could have one channel (say, right) through the SB built-in speaker,
and another channel through an amplified speaker (e.g. a reasonable
quality PC one). Not as good as a proper set-up of course but probably
fine for bedside use. Then again, given that speakers come in pairs
maybe it's not worth worrying about ;-) (and the power consumption for
the SB Radio will be reduced when it's not powering the speaker).

It doesn't matter what the priority is. That's up to Slim to
determine, not you the impacted user.

The important thing is that the target milestone for that bug is still
in the 7.4.x branch of software.

I'm sure about 1 week after they fix this someone opens up the
following bug report;

"when headphones are plugged in Alarm sounds through speaker, when it
should sound through headphones".

Thanks for this bpa! I added
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/opml/bbc_podcast_opml.opml as a "BBC
Podcasts" item on the Podcast app on MySB.com - I can then browse the
podcast from my radio. Strangley not all of them seem to work (perhaps
due to errors in the opml feed or content being removed?).

I've also downloaded both "BBC iPlayer" and bpa's excellent "BBC
iPlayer Extras" app to my LinkStation NAS SC/SBS.

I find this business of switching between the local SBS (for BBC
iPlayer/Extras, my music) and MySB.com (for the BBC app for live radio)
a bit confusing though - you really want it be transparent to the user
most of the time. Ideally I think I'd just have my NAS powered up when
I'm likely to listen to music and use MySB.com for everything else
(including occasional very early alarms).

Finally it would be great when there is some standardisation on what
the BBC provides - for a novice it's tricky to know what to use.
(perhaps I'll write a SB wiki page when I've finally worked it out
myself!)

if using the opml on MySB - then the OPML feed will be processed by
MySB server based in Germany and perhaps BBC will not supply the UK only
podcast through this servers.

Try the OPML feed URL as a Favorite on your SBS.

Two solutions to avoid switching.
1. Use the live streams on BBCiPlayer
2. Install BBC App when connected to SBS

The BBCiPlayer written by Triode (not Logitech) use an XML feed from
the BBC. BBCiPlayerExtra written by bpa (not Logitech) uses RSS feeds
from BBC. BBC App written by Logitech uses WMA URLs . Posdcast player
fromLogitechs using a BBC OPML feeds.

Standardisation is difficult since BBC haven't got a single uniform
source of programs (XML, RSS, OPML and URLs) and you have 3 authors.

Maybe I'm missing something in your example, but pressing the power
button on the SB Radio doesn't necessarily start playing music. At least
it doesn't for me. Have you tried it (sometime when it wouldn't wake
someone)? If it does start music playing then you can change that via
some settings, the specifics of which I don't recall right now.

I often encounter the two examples you give. I just turn on the Radio,
go to the Alarm settings (I know where the Alarm button is by feel now,
but you could also go through the Settings > Alarm menus), and either
check the alarm time, change the alarm time, or disable the alarm for
the relevant day.

Thanks for that - I'll give it a go.
It's not setting favourtites from SC/SBS I was having trouble with but
from the SB Radio interface. I'd expected that whenever I was listening
to something on the Radio (which I assume would usually have an
associated URL) I'd be able to save it as a favourite. However I think
this limitation has been discussed elsewhere on these forums.

Thanks for the comments bpa.

1. I'm sure when I tried to use the live streams on BBCiPlayer it
didn't play - perhaps the SB Radio can't play the format and the
LinkStation NAS with 7.3.3 can't decode it either. Or maybe it was a
problem with my broadband connection (my ISP has just implemented
traffic shaping in a sledgehammer manner).

2. Yes I wondered about that, but unfortunately the BBC App doesn't
show up under my Plugins settings, possibly because it's 7.3.3 not
7.4.x? Is there a Logitech repository URL I can use (like I did to see
your BBCiPlayerExtra app) or will I have to wait for 7.4?

(7.4 is not currently available on LS stock firmware - see various
discussions on 3rd Party Hardware forum)

I heard on the news today that BBC have announced some iPlayer "net TV"
standardisation (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8426104.stm) so
maybe this will trickle down to radio content too. I suppose what I'd
expect from the BBC is a definitive list of format(s) and the same
content on all of them. That said I assume this is a learning period for
them too to try and work out what formats become most common etc.

It's great that there are knowledgable people on the forums to fill in
the gaps for us!

You should be able to save a Favorite by pressing the Radio's big knob
while something is playing, then scroll to Add to Favorites.
Whether this is functioning properly for you is another issue. :)

SBRadio and Touch have the best support and Radio can in fact support
BBC Flash/AAC natively (currently in test).

By default BBCiPlayer will play Flash/AAC for Live and Listen Again.
You Linkstation may not be set up with the correct version of faad (to
decode AAC) or else not powerful enough - in which change the BBCiPlayer
setting to prefer WMA.

Spotlife, for example? Years after Logitech shut it down, people were

At least with the SqueezeBox devices, there will be the option to

First of all, please vote for Bug 14715!
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14715

Second, maybe this will help. You can define what behavior you want
when you hit the power on. It sounds like your SBR may be set to pause
at power off/resume at power on, which results in blaring music when you
hit the power button. I usually leave mine at pause at power off/remain
paused at power on, which means that music won't start blaring until I
hit the pause or play button.

Thanks!
George

As an aside, did you have Twonky running alongside SSOTS?

Also, how did you install the SSOTS to port 9000 - mine defaults to

[SlimDevices: Radio] How to "SSH into" the SB Radio?

2009-12-22 Thread photoface

Hi People,

On many occasions I read about SSH. I found in the Radio's menu how to
enable it. and noted down the IP address and password, but what next?

I want to accomplish disabling the IR cell for the remote. Every time I
use the remote for the Boom in another part of the room, the Radio
cheerfully joins in.

In another thread I found the path to the file (in the Radio
firm/software) that must be renamed, I just need a hand getting in.

Cheers,

I think I would use Terminal then. I ping the IP of the radio, and it

Can you explain me, why you want to do it?

Curiouser and curiouser

If I go through Settings>Advanced>Networking>Remote Libraries on the SB
Radio and manually enter the IP addres sof my SB server, the radio says
it can't connect to the server.

However, I *can* use the web interface on my PC to view the radio as
one of my available players. Stranger still, if I then select some
music through the web UI and hit play, sure enough the radio fires up
and plays the song, even though it is telling me it can't connect to the
server and I can't see anthing through the My Music library because oit
can't connect.

Going mad here...anyone got any ideas or is my wife getting a brick for

That is strange. It works for me with or without quotes. I'm not using
Snow Leopard, but I don't think that should matter. Are you using a
lower case l (lima) as the parameter for ssh?

It also wouldn't hurt to re-verify that Remote Login is still enabled
on the Radio, although I tried with it disabled and got a different
error message.

mv /usr/share/jive/jive/irMap_default.lua
/usr/share/jive/jive/irMap_default.lua.old (or whatever you want to name
it)
mv is the linux move command. There isn't a rename command. Move is
used to rename files.

Yes, I have Twonky running also, and it works fine. Your SSOTS should
default to port 9099, and your Squeezebox Server installation should
default to port 9001 when it diagnoses that Twonky is running on 9000.
This is how it is supposed to work. I'm sure you'll get it sorted.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Headphone Volume Too Low

2009-12-22 Thread nyrhky94

Hello All:

New owner here of the Squeezebox Radio and first time post. I really
love the product so far, except for one nit. The volume that comes out
of the headphone jack is very, very low and requires alot of
adjustments. I planned on using my Sennheiser RS-130 wireless headphones
with the radio and was not pleased with the low volume coming through
the headphone jack. I had to play around with raising the volume high
on the radio and then adjust the wireless headphone volume as well to
get a "decent" sound.

I searched the forum here and see other posts about amplified speakers
being used through the headphone jack etc., but wanted to ask if there
is any adjustments, plug-ins, software updates or work arounds for the
low volume coming through the headphone jack?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Headphone Volume Too Low

2009-12-22 Thread snarlydwarf

Sounds like the usual "more than one volume in the chain" problem.

If you're using something with its own volume control, you should set
the radio to full volume, and use that device's volume control.

Why? Supposed you set the Radio to 50% volume... now you have capped
the max volume of the other device...

Since I like the water hose analogy...

The city provides water on a nice 1" pipe.

You decide you want a shutoff valve in the middle to adjust the flow,
and you set it to 50% open. Now, when you take a shower, the faucet in
the shower, turned up all the way, gives you less flow.

But if you go back and open your valve 100% of the way, your shower
faucet now has more pressure, and at half-open, it is able to provide
the same flow as before when the new valve was 50% open... and at 100%
open, it's got much better pressure.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Basicaly my radio can't see the server, so the switch library function
doesn't work as the radio doesn't see any libraries. The oddity is that
the server knows the radio is trying to connect and I can make the radio
play music by cueing it up through the web UI.

I have no idea whether this is a hardware or software issue. Logitech
support have been somewhere between unhelpful and rude.

Looks likee my wife is getting an expensive internet radio for

[SlimDevices: Radio] Significantly more stable alarm applet

2009-12-22 Thread Marc

Ok, I've spent all too much time over the past few days analyzing,
testing, and debugging the AlarmSnooze applet.

I now have a significantly more stable applet that I'm running on a
Radio with firmware version 7.4.1-r7915. I originally started with
Ben's baseline version of AlarmSnoozeApplet.lua which was checked into
SVN last Friday the 18th and made my modifications from there...

There are still some minor problems remaining (most of which are
systemic in nature and cannot, in my view, be fixed in a vacuum in the
applet), but the core backup alarm functionality is much more
deterministic now.

I won't go into all the gory details unless people are interested
(Ben??? :) ), but suffice it to say that it took many hours to
understand the underlying system behavior because of the interaction
between many separate layers of functionality in the context of alarms.

This modified applet is also heavily instrumented, so the events that
contribute to any alarm malfunctions will be clear and available in the
system log for post-mortem analysis.

The specific remaining problems that I'm cognizant of are as follows:

1) When a new alarm notification is sent by the server (web
interface) while an existing alarm is actually playing out at the radio
(including during local snooze) then the new alarm will not have a local
backup timer associated with it

2) The backup alarm audio gain (volume) is fixed, and not
configurable, as is the snooze time (9 minutes). Both of these
characteristics are still as they were in the previous version of the
applet.

3) The backup alarm audio gain (volume) is sometimes moved
during server reconnection events (when network conditions are dicey)

The benefits, as seen in my testing:

If you set a one shot or repeating alarm now, or even multiple one shot
alarms (as long as you don't set any while the Radio is actually in the
middle of having had one go off) I expect you'll be much better
protected when/if your server connection goes away. The backup timer
protection for the next upcoming alarm (though not necessarily those
coming after it) has been greatly enhanced. Also greatly enhanced is
the likelihood that the backup on-board alarm audio will actually play
when the backup timer fires off.

The Squeezebox development team will still be needed to help clean up
the remaining issues (presuming they are interested in starting with my
modified applet to begin with, that is). The remaining issues appear to
be systemic, as I mentioned, and relate to flow control between
different entities in the system (server, SqueezeOS, and applet
communication). I have worked around some of the systemic problems by
making changes in the applet, but there's only so much that can be done
exclusively in AlarmSnooze itself...

To the Logitech team there: I still need information on licensing and
distribution constraints to determine if it's ok to distribute this
modified applet for testing by those who want to give it a try. Do you
guys want to have a look at it in advance to examine and possibly run
through a QA ringer? I'm also willing to talk about the specific issues
that remain if you guys are interested... I believe I now have a firm
understanding of what the remaining problems are and can share
suggestions toward resolving them (not to be presumptuous).

If and when Logitech approves the distribution of this modified applet
for a group of interested Radio users to test, testers must understand
that I have only been debugging this applet for 3 days now (albeit
probably 30 hours in total by now). I've also only tested it in my
environment, so it has had nothing near a real good shakeout yet.

The optimal scenario would be that the Logitech guys have at it first,
as I think it will provide them a good foundation for resolving the
balance of alarm issues remaining.

Ben, Michael, et al... Please advise how you'd like to proceed...

Regards,
Marc

And it makes a great Christmas gift once one empties the bottle that
was in the bag so that the SB Radio can then go in the bag. This will be
the new Amazon pairs. One clicks on buy an SB Radio then looks below
where it says, "Others that purchased the SB Radio also purchased a
Liter Bottle of Crown Royal!"

Recent Slashdot story, soon Ford Sync will include ability to do WiFi.

Not clear if this will be close to what you need for a Radio, but
clearly cars will have WiFi a lot sooner than expected.

Just use one of the free international Wifi providers.

I use 'linksys' and 'default' myself.
