Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SR and Linksys with WEP

2010-01-09 Thread stridger

What exactly is the point of using WEP? It's just as secure as using no
encryption nowadays and having an unencrypted network is so much easier.
No need to tediously input the password with the scrolly-wheel-thingy.

There are tools out there that can hack into any WEP network within 10
minutes and require no prior knowledge of the user. All it takes is
typing "hack WEP" into Google.

My philosophy is either run WPA2-AES (if I need the security and all my
devices support it) or run unecrypted (if I don't care). Everything else
(especially WEP!) gives a false sense of security.

You're probably playing Flash/AAC but at a higher rate than I get.

I use a Boom on 7.5 and BBCiPlayer nearly every night - I always FFWd

spinning the wheel.

What format are you playing ?

With any of the Flash stuff I find I must wait a few secs into playing
the stream before FFW works because the duration info has not been
received processed even though the stream starts playing.

Also I think, if you stop and then press play for a Flash/AAC stream
the duration info is lost (it is provided in an earlier exchange with
BBC) and so FFW/REW doesn't work.

In summary - if the duration of the program is known - then you can
ffw/rew.

If you're entering a passphrase, perhaps you should try entering a
-key-. Keys for WEP-64 are 10 hex digits.

That said, you do know that WEP offers only a 'mild annoyance' level of
protection to your network, right? It isn't secure at all.

Not sure what to tell you, works on my Radio on both SBS 7.4 and MySB.
:(

"+" or knob push & hold brings up a context menu which includes Save to
Favorites (or Remove from Favorites, if it is already saved as a
Favorite).

Local music this works in both Now Playing and in the menu selection.
Internet Radio streams this only works in the menu selection, not on
Now Playing.

To be clear: you navigate to a menu selection (station stream), prior
to playing that selection you press "+", and it does NOT offer Save to
Favorites as an option?
What does "+" offer you?

The oven would be a problem -- all the lights -- nickels and dimes.
Nothing too expensive. Same with the PC. If you sleep the monitor,
you save enough. The $10.00 -- $20.00 a year for keeping a PC on all

Makes sense. I think if you watch the log you will see in this case a
playerModeChange or playerLoaded or playerCurrent or similar
notification coming from SqueezeOS that is causing the audio subsystem
to be prematurely transitioned to actually play out audio prior to when
the volume is adjusted just above 0. Then again, you'll only see the
notification occur if an applet or SqueezeOS is logging it. I know the
new AlarmSnooze applet spits out these events, but I'm not sure they are
otherwise logged...

I did some more testing regarding this and I think my problem is the
volume ramp-up and not what's actually played. I've probably just been
sleepy when a alarm has fired earlier thinking that there was some audio
left in some buffer.

Anyway, this is what happens:
1. I have the alarms configured to ramp up the volume with the "Fade
Alarms In" setting.
2. I've paused the player, not stopped it.
3. When the alarm is fired it correctly selects the chosen playlist
4. It starts to play the music with high volume, I think it's the
volume according to the alarm volume setting
5. After a half second it changes the volume to just above 0
6. It correctly ramps up the volume slowly until it reaches the alarm
volume setting.

The problem is step 4 which causes me to wake up immediately instead of
through slowly ramped up music. It feels like step 4 and 5 should happen
in the opposite order so the volume is lowered before the stream
actually starts to play.

If the player is stopped (not just paused) before the alarm sequence it
works correctly.
Also the problem is not what's in the buffer because it plays the
correct track at step 4, it's just that the volume is too high at that
moment.

It was the TrackStat related log messages that was worried about but
they seem to be gone now ?

I don't know the reason for these log messages, unfortunately I don't
use the iPeng skin myself anymore I've converted to the iPeng native
application available on the App Store which works a lot better.

Yes you can.
- download WinSCP (a windows program allowing you to connect to your
radio)
- activate remote access on your radio (Settings->Advanced->Remote
Login) and remember the IP
- Connect with WinSCP to your Radio (use the IP, username 'root',
password '1234', protocol 'SCP')
- Go to /usr/share/applets/AlarmSnoozeApplet on your Radio and you will
find an alarm.mp3
- Change it.

Note1: this change will be reverted, whenever you change the firmware
Note2: I'd prefer working on the server to be alive at alarm-time so
that the radio plays your original selected stream gently fading in :)

Try it and see. :)

Create a free www.MySqueezeBox.com account, install the Sirius App,
enter your Sirius streaming login info.
Then go to Remote Control on the UI, click on Sirius, see if it loads
the Sirius menu items.

You can't actually "play" anything within the Remote Control without
having a SB player logged into MySB. You could install one of the free
SB software players to actually play from, but I don't use these.

I still have a non-premium Sirius streaming account since I renewed my

Squeezebox Sirius plugin will not work at all?

Why don't I just leave all my light bulbs on all the time as well? Or
my oven for that matter...

I've measured my PC and other devices with a Kill-A-Watt, it uses
*considerable* amounts of power even when 'off' or on but idle.

There is the player settings in the web ui called "Power On Resume",
but I have it set to "Pause at power off / Remain paused at power on" so
I don't think this is it.

I'll do some experimentation to see if I'm able to reproduce it.
I know I've also sometimes had clock synchronization problems on the
server (running in a virtual machine), so that might also cause
problems.

It should also be said that I'm only using locally stored music, no
internet radio. My server is running 24/7.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Music before Alarm

2010-01-09 Thread Marc

I think Erland's and Stefan's comments are both probably important
(Peter's as well, in pointing out to distinct issues in terms of the
fallback alarm versus some earlier stream playing for a bit).

I'd suggest doing a small bit of testing with the following in mind:
You're playing stream 1 at some point in time and then think you've
stopped it. It could be that when you think you've 'stopped' it that
you really haven't, since hitting the pause button actually 'pauses' the
stream. If the stream is then sitting there paused for hours prior to
the alarm going off then there will be no surprise if you hear it again
briefly when the 'server' alarm goes off (and maybe even if a fallback
alarm fires, since it could be that encoded audio from the earlier
stream has already made it to the Radio cache before you paused it OR
that decoded audio - PCM samples - are themselves still waiting in the
Radio cache from earlier). The reason you may hear the earlier stream
briefly is due to how the notification system works. If a
playerModeChange notification is delivered to some listening applet (or
perhaps even just SqueezeOS directly determines the transition has
occurred) which then decides that means to turn the local audio playout
back on then voila... you are left with the previously played stream
audio which was previously in paused state.

playerModeChange notifications (along with several other similar type
notifications) DO occur during the alarm process...

So, see if a previously stopped (not paused) stream, as Stefan
mentioned, manifests the issue when a later alarm is fired then retest
with the played stream being paused (not stopped) prior to the later
alarm firing... I would not be at all surprised if you hear just the
alarm audio after the prior stream was stopped, but the brief earlier
stream first if it was paused...

Of course, if the earlier stream continues to be briefly heard prior to
the requested alarm audio even after the earlier stream was explicitly
stopped (not paused) then the problem is likely that either the
cache/prefetch audio buffer at the server or the Radio is not being
properly flushed after a stop operation. Either way, any existing
audio (whether earlier paused or stopped) should, in my view, be flushed
out of the playout pipeline when an alarm fires... Not so easy to do
in the current context of how alarms work though...

Marc

Is this a setting ?
When I play a stream and turn the radio off the stream is stopped.
If I turn the radio on, the stream is still stopped.

I'd swear the "+" or knob push offered Add to Favorites on Radio while
playing a selection at some point. Must have been removed (or I'm
seeing things. again).

You can add a selection to Favorites with "+" or knob push & hold from
the menu's (before selecting to Play item).

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Music before Alarm

2010-01-09 Thread Peter Stone
Many thanks to Bluegaspode for his comments:
"You hear the 'fallback' alarm which means your server is not ready yet
to send the alarm-signal and play the proper stream.
This fallback alarm currently doesn't fade in."

The fallback alarm, very loud, very repetitive, is nothing I
recognise - I assume it is an item from the inbuilt sounds library.
Might I at least change it for another more gentle sound?

Since this sound is not on any playlist, and is played at max volume,
I think the problem noted by Miniwaites and myself is different from
that described by Erland, who commented:
>I've suspected it starts to play the current playlist with the last
>used volume when the device is turned on before the alarm handling
>kicks in and changes the playlist and lowers the volume.

I've suspected it starts to play the current playlist with the last
used volume when the device is turned on before the alarm handling kicks
in and changes the playlist and lowers the volume. However, I haven't
investigated it in detail. It only happens sometimes for me, sometimes
the volume ramp-up works correctly.

at least 9 seconds before the fallback code triggerts

And twice the speakers and some nifty dsp, but not the color lcd

I think this is very influenced by placement, corners shelfs etc do
contribute to the sound, Hence the need for tone controlls ?

So go and vote for it ! now !

I've seen a lot of forum noise about tone controlls in the last 2
