Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Best alarm clock ever!!!

2009-09-27 Thread ModelCitizen

The alarm code has not been touched since before the Boom was released
despite having several outstanding bugs against it. My Boom and SB3
alarms have failed recently for three reasons:

1) The alarm code does not handle the new BBC iPlayer playlists
2) There is a bug in the way it lists favourites
3) Power cut leading to router failure (back up alarm failed despite
power recovery).

The alarm functionality needs work. If the originator of the current
code can't continue with it Logitec should find (and pay) someone else
to update it.

Goodsounds. The Boom was sold as a bedside radio/alarm/hifi (amongst
other things). The Radio is aimed directly at bedside use. For these
devices a reliable alarm is definitely "a core function".

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Improve default "Now Playing" layout

2009-10-16 Thread ModelCitizen

I like the iPeng approaxh where SOME OF THE the controls or other
extraneous information only show up if you tap the screen (or vice
versa). Theis way you can choose via a tap to have plain unobscured
album art of have it overlaid with control/extra information.

Chopped album art is bad whichever way you look at it... as is a
bedside alarm/radio where you can't read the time from more than a few
inches away.

I think need a MusicInfo screensaver for the Radio/Touch (and I'd also
really like to see visualisations too). Signing up for the bug in my
signature so the developers can use the existing code without fear of
being hung, drawn and quartered is quite important.

I'm sure it's the majority case. You're probably not aware but the Boom
had a similar problem when it was being developed. The NP screen saver
did not include a clock (a pretty big omission for a device that was
marketed as a bedside hifi/clock radio, amongst other things). At least
with the Radio the clock was included by default (even if it is too
small to read)!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Does this new model have a auto-sleep button?

2009-10-30 Thread ModelCitizen

Being the proud owner of two Radios, a Boom, a Touch etc etc I can
authoritatively assert that the snooze button on the radio is absolutely
fine. It is simple to reach out and hit the big knob with eyes entirely
closed and brain hardly functioning. The little Radio is so solid and
heavy and has such good rubber feet that it does not move at all when I
do this (let alone threaten to fall off my bedside table).

In fact, I think I prefer it to the sleep button on my Boom. The Boom
in the main bedroom has now been surplanted by the Radio and moved
downstairs to the kitchen where, in it's turn it has replaced the bulky
Classic, amp and speakers.

Another very good thing with the radio is that the headphone socket is
on the side of the device (not in a very-hard-to-get-to recess at the
back as it was on the Boom). The addition of a dedicated volume button
is also very welcome.

All in all, it's a very solid device and a steal at the price (even in
the UK).

I think the display brightness needs some work. I've set mine to
automatic but it is too bright at night in the off state and at some
levels of ambient light the brightness continually adjusts itself,
fading up and down (although it's not a smooth, gradual fading but a
series of jerky steps in the level brilliance).

Is there a bug logged for this yet?

I'm on 7.4.1

It does... but the most useful setting it includes is the ability to
set the minimum brightness. The Radio desperately needs this facility
asap. (Less urgently it also needs the sensitivity and less-than-gradual
nature of the fade sorted out, or at least mine does)

There is already an enhancement logged for this, although it was
registered before the development of the radio and only refers to the
Boom, but I think the two devices share the same alarm code. There are a
lot of bugs/enhancents logged against the alarm and as far as I can see
none of them get addressed. The original developer of the alarm code
appears to have little time for Logitech matters nowadays.

Yours must be different from mine then. At night mine is about 14
inches from my face (on the bedside table next to my bed) and it is far
too bright. I have to hang something over the front (in fact I might put
the boom back until this is fixed in the software). I think I've got it

Just how far is your radio from your face. Mine is 12 inches (300mm)
from my face. The screen is right in front of my eyes.

I have now factory reset it with no change, and tried holding my whole
forearm over the top of the radio, again with no change. I have also
fiddled a fair bit with the brightness setting, reaching the conclusion
that choosing "Automatic" renders the
Brightness slider ineffectual.

I can see that the brightness of the display does vary with ambient
light and that it varies in a jerky fashion. Curiously when the room is
dark the display can get darker when I activate my iPhone display!

Now I am worried that there is a hardware fault and that I should
return it before the 30 days I up.

FYI I remember that while the Boom was being developed I had a similar
problem with the display. In the end I tracked it down the light sensor
reading the light reflection of the Boom's screen from my face and
bedclothes and adjusting the brightness upwards! This sensitivity was
corrected in software and the Boom screen auto brightness worked
perfectly after this.

Can I ask you, does this include the clock (black background)
screensaver? This is the screen I find too bright at night. It is the
screensaver I use when the player is stopped or turned off. Assuming
your screen is the same brightness as mine I can see how you might find
other screens too dark at night, but not the clock screensaver.

My room is also blacked out.

No, the main point of my post is that I couldn't find a way to cancel a

Funny, my conclusion was that it was the software that was the problem,
not the hardware (maybe you assumed that when I covered up the light
sensor I was in a lit room? I wasn't, was in a dark room).

Anyway, I've now 'upgraded' to 7.5 and if anything the problem is
slightly worse, with the brilliance being slightly less inclined to go
to as dim as before in a darkened room (although this could be caused by
the current bright moon and clear sky).

BTW. My radio is about 12" (300mm) away from my face and the edge of my

I am hoping Logitech fit the Radio with the same brightness controls

There is copycat iPod setting that will play all tracks in an album
when you select to play any one track. I think this is default behaviour
(might be wrong). If you'd like your player to use the eminently more
sensible "Play only the track I select" you'll have to find it in
settings and enable it.

And then make sure you have shuffle turned off.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Disappointed by Boom to Radio switch

2009-12-29 Thread ModelCitizen

I have to agree about the backlit buttons, a real mistake for an
alarm/radio box. The alarm/sleep/snooze implementation is also poor,
horribly fiddly, misleading and badly thought out.

On the plus side though the screen is superb and the seperate volume
and nagigation knob an obvious advantage over the Booms hacked
single-knob implementation.

However, the reason I've given up using my radio as my bedroom alarm
clock and stuck the too-large Boom back on my small bedside table is
that the radio screen is too bright to sleep next too and (unlike the
Boom) it is not possible to reduce its minimum brightness.

It's a real shame, the Radio is so nearly brilliant, but for me the
stupid (and totally unnecessary) flaws make it impractical for use. I
have trouble understanding how it could have been released with what
appear to be very damaging but easily solvable software flaws (backlit
buttons excepting, obviously). There must something quite awry with
Logitech management that really needs sorting out if this product line
is to continue with any success.

While I'm here, the Facebook stuff (app.. ha ha ha) is just plain
stupid. Whichever Logitech manager was responsable for that should be
taken outside and shot.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Minimal Brightness (Auto) - doesn't work well for me

2010-01-06 Thread ModelCitizen

I'm beginning to think that my Radio needs returning but would like to
check with others before I do this.

Despite the introduction (possible in beta software only) of the new
brightness setting "Minimal Brightness (Auto)" my Radio display still
will not go dim enough for comfortable sleep. This is especially true of
the clock screensaver when the radio is in the "off" state.

I have noticed that (on my radio) the Minimal Brightness slider has no
noticeable effect on the bottom 20% of it's travel, i.e. the minimum
possible brighness is arrived at when the slider is still one fifth of
the way from full minimum. Is this the way it is on every radio?

In addition I've sometimes had the brightness fluctuate wildly when the
ambient room brightness has changed...

I don't want to return it. It's hassle and cost for me, but the
brightness and flaky alarm make the device unfit for the purpose I
bought it for.

Any comments welcome.

One other observation. When i wake up at night and the clock is too
bright I have been shining my iPhone screen at the sensor. This makes
the display light up further but when I turn off the iPhone the Radio
display will reduce to a dimmer setting that before. I am half convinced
that the display gets brighter in the night.

BTW. I live in the middle of nowhere. There are no passing cars and no
street lights so the light level in the room should not change whilst I
am asleep.

I still wonder about reflection of the Radio's display off the bed
sheets (ala Boom) but as I seem to be alone with this problem think that
it is probably a faulty sensor (or something).

My room is now pitch black. The manual display goes much darker than
the automatic display. I even tested with my hand over the light sensor
(assuming it is somewhere at the top of the speaker grill) and got the
same results (so not reflections there).

Is there anything I might be able to do to save me having to send the

Really worrying is that the clock was still a little too bright for me
on the darkest manual setting (even though all other screens are too
dark).

Ahah... but wouldn't making the numbers on the clock be a bit
darker/greyer/coloured/opaque help? The dark background is fine as it
is. The numbers are very bright when I compare them to stuff on other
screens (album covers, default radio scren etc).

I need to see the time so darkness screensaver is not good for me

It'd be handy if there were a choice of clocks for the radio (maybe
there are but I'm not aware of them... I'd better look).

I can't see how I missed this. Erland's custom clock plugin is really
great. It's a crying shame that Logitech have not nurtured the third
party developers and that as a result he seems to lack the enthusiasm
for further development. It a big mistake on Logitech's part, especially
considering that they seem to make so many elemental mistakes (in this
case such as time not readable on Now Playing screen and the general
lack of a reasonable clock) which third party developers could
ameliorate.

Anyway, copying the red text clock and changing the text colour to dark
grey has sorted out my nightime clock problem nicely. It is a much
better laid out clock than Logitech's too. Once I have figured out how
to make a different custom clock for each of the three player states
I'll tackle the Now Playing screen saver so I can have readable time on
it.

Thanks for putting me on to this.

Now all that is left is for Ben and Marc to sort out the alarm
functionality and the radio will be ready for prime time. :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm completely stopped working

2010-01-25 Thread ModelCitizen

I don't suppose you are on 7.5? For me the alarm on (my regularly
updated) 7.5 has become a bit of a pain. It doesn't really do anything I
expect it to.

Small and quick catalogue:

* Unintuitive usage
* Alarms are different (not synched) on SBS and MSB
* Updating alarm days is not reflected when you back out of the menu
* Alarm wakes me up with wrong playlist and then it's painful to get
the right playlist to play
* I have to open my eyes and focus to operate it once it's gone off.

Sleep is also flaky. There is no confirmation when you set sleep to
(say) thirty minutes so you're never sure whether the setting has been
accepted it or not.

As it stands at this moment with 7.5 the radio is not really up to
performing some of it's primary functions.

But as it is beta software I live in hope that it is being improved.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

2010-02-03 Thread ModelCitizen

I think you might be experiencing the same thing I did. I got around the
issue by using the third party Custom Clock applet (thanks Erland). I
took the standard digital clock with black background that comes with
Erland's applet and then set the letters/numbers to be dark grey. This
had the effect of making the clock screensaver quite a lot darker. This
could work for you as you will then be able to turn the overall minimum

I wonder if it is the same crazy music that my radio sometimes plays
for the alarm in the morning? It's as irritating as hell, a fast and
lively loop. Doesn't suit my mood at all in the morning, but I've not
been able to figure out why it sometime plays instead of my set alarm
sound, where it comes from or what the music is. I've tried all sorts of
settings to get rid of it. Luckily it only rears it's ugly sound once a
every few weeks though.

Cheers. I'll change it for something more morning friendly and just
hope it won't be overwritten by firmware updates.
I'll see if I can provide a log next time.
That link just seemed to give me a German Amazon page with small images

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio alarm: If two set the second turns off the radio (7.5)

2010-03-12 Thread ModelCitizen

I'm running 7.5 (which I believe might be getting close to release) and
repeatedly suffer from this problem with the alarm. I've not seen anyone
else report it so wonder if I am alone.

I have two alarms set in the morning. One fires at 6.30am (and has a
one hour time out set), the other fires at 7.20am.
If I use the left arrow to back out of the first alarm after it fires,
leaving the radio alarm playlist running when the second alarm fires it
turns off the stream, leaving me with silence.

This is not what I'd expect. I'd expect the second alarm to turn off
the playlist fired by the first alarm and then fade the same playlist
back in (as both alarms are set to the same playlist).

I don't think it has any bearing but I'm using an BBC iPlayer live
stream favourite as my alarm.

I'm eager that this bug (if it is a bug) is not included in the full
7.5 release.

7.5 isn't much better (I'm assuming that all these reports are for
earlier versions of the server). I use the 7.5 nightlies and get that
annoyingly upbeat built-in music loop going off at some very strange
and seemingly random times.. and sometimes the Radio uses that sound
instead of my default alarm sound (for no good reason I can see).

I only choose to connect to my local SqueezeBox Server and my network
is rock solid.

I've not (manually) updated these applets since the problem and AAC

Ah... good question.

A Touch with speakers would make much more sense than the Touch, but
personally I would be happier with a radio type screen. I wouldn't use
the proposed device next to my bed as an alarm radio thingy (the radio
is adequate for that, and a better size), and probably use it in my
garage, studio or kitchen, in which case I'd tend to use iPeng to
control it for all but the most instantly required actions (like
turning the volume down/up). Also, a radio type screen would make the
device cheaper. So for me, the radio type screen.

I imagine Logitech would probably make it with a touch screen... but
then the device might work out a more expensive than they'd be
comfortable with.

Upon reflection all I'd really need on a new Boom box with be a nice
big (non-touch) colour screen and a big volume knob.. perhaps a power
button too. :-)

It's your lovely management that are responsible for this mess. Who do
you think made the decision to tie the radio and touch so heavily into
MySB, against all the protestations of the beta testers (and you can
bet against the advice of the developers)?

Get real. You are slagging of all the people who saw this happening.
Logitech bought the wrong product. They tried to do the equivalent of
converting a single seater, fair weather fighter into heavy duty, atom
bomber. And when it (unsurprisingly) crashed, walked away denying
responsibility and instead concentrated on developing Google TV.

I should do what I have done, make the best of a bad job (my system,
using only SBS works well for music... I use my iPhone for an alarm,
much more reliable) and promise yourself never to buy another Logitech
product oh, and give up on these forums too.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio alarm gone odd after years of working OK

2010-12-15 Thread ModelCitizen

I've been using the radio since I first received one for the beta
program.
I run it wireless on a local SqueezeCenter (7.51, r9218). The system
has not been fiddled with orvipgraded for ages (i.e. The new problem is
not due to environment change).
My alarm fires up BBC Radio 4 (current playlist). I have an alarms set
for 6.30am and 7.20am.

The alarm works mostly OK. The few problems I've experienced have
usually been down to internet connectivity and the server PC going to
sleep. However the last two days the alarm has performed oddly and as a
result my day has started badly.

The 6.30am alarm fired normally and Radio 4 came on but after a minute
or so of relaxed listening the extremely irritating and VERY LOUD built
in fallback alarm loop started playing. Stopping it only seemed possible
by hitting the radio's power button.

Two questions:

1) Any ideas why this might be happening?

2) How can I replace the unbuilt fallback loop with something more
appropriate for use as an alarm?
I can probably remember how to access the radio file system if I give
it some thought. I'd like to replace the sound permanently if at all
possible.

An aside. I'd like to take whoever was responsible for the fallback
alarm sound outside and shoot them or on second thoughts do much,
much worse things to them.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cheers.

I am using Triodes iPlayer applet for the BBC streams and up until
yesterday it was fine. Today and yesterday I got the exact same
problem. Alarm started, played for a few seconds correctly and then
fallback alarm thumped in. It looks very much like what wonder boy
experienced in post 2:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=588536&postcount=2

I've looked at the radio logs, messages (90kb), and messages.0 (200kb)
but both logs only cover about five minutes from around 1pm today (i.e.
a long time after the alarm went off!). I've rebooted my SC and radio
and am hoping that this will see the end of the problem. If I get it
tomorrow I'll jump out of bed (gasp!) and save the log.

I created a loop of the guitar riff intro of Norman Greenbaum's spirit

faded in at our at each loop point. I imagine that the recent firmware

[SlimDevices: Radio] How to change wireless password in Radio (and Touch)?

2011-02-21 Thread ModelCitizen

An elementary newbie type question for which I will kick myself when the
answer is supplied as it's certain I missing something entirely
obvious.

I've had to change the password of my home wireless network.
It's been a simple affair to change the password in all my wireless
devices except the Touch and the Radio. I just can't figure out how to
do it. The devices seem only to be able to attempt to connect using my
old password, which of course fails. Can someone point me in the right
direction? How do I get to networking set up (other than by
Settings/Advanced/Networking)?

I've tried wiring the radio and updating the firmware (although my
firmware is current for my SBS version) to no avail.
I am running 7.5.2 (as 7.5.3 causes connectivity issues) on a wireless
network using "WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)"
security.

I do not want to factory reset either device (although it doesn't seem
credible that I'd need to).

Thanks for any help

the battery out to recover it. Once I'd done that it worked.

Hopefully I'll not ever have to change anything again.

Thanks Jim

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] "Can't Connect" flashes during play, sometimes stops it

2011-02-27 Thread ModelCitizen

This is happening to me too. Can I ask you both if you upgraded to 7.5.3
recently?

I've had this and problems like it since I "upgraded" to 7.5.3. I've
now reverted to 7.5.2 but the software still announces itself as 7.5.3
and the connection problems persist.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SORRY! Squeezebox Radio .. Alarm and Headphones

2011-05-14 Thread ModelCitizen

I regularly have the headphones plugged in with an alarm set. Most times
the alarm bypasses the headphones and sounds through the speakers.
Sometimes it doesn't though. I've never figured out why. I use "current
playlist" as my alarm setting, usually to BBC Radio 4 through Triode's
wonderful iPlayer plugin. I use SqueezeServer, not Squeezebox Network
(or whatever they are currently called).

Personally I don't think the radio is suitable for use as an alarm
clock. It is not reliable enough however you set it up.

I guess this means that support and development of LMS ends here then?

Because the company is short-sighted, unimaginative and quite
inefficient. The writing has been on the wall pretty much since they
developed the mis-conceived Receiver and Controller (as I am sure Jim
Zolx will affirm when he wakes up).

They missed the idea of whole house audio and synchronisation almost
completely. They couldn't even get wireless connectivity and User
Interface Design right. Tossers.

BTW. Who controls this forum (hosting, DNS etc?)
