Yeah, I've been scratching my head over that too. The Radio is a good

I got Inguz to work on my Win7 PC, but it was a bit of work.

And Inguz is brilliant when it works. So I believe that a user-friendly
install wizard and a front-end for Inguz would have been better than a
brand new EQ plugin, in many ways.

But I don't know how reliable it would be possible to make it.

Not with the Radio, but with plenty of other gadgets. The solution has
always involved a screwdriver and a soldering iron, I hope that doesn't

Good idea. That would help eliminate the possibility that the error in

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Taking my Squeezebox Radio on Vacation

2012-04-27 Thread Soulkeeper

The two most realistic solutions AFAIU:

1) Use a laptop as a wireless bridge: Connect the Radio to the laptop
via Ethernet. Connect the laptop to the WiFi. Enable Internet sharing on
the laptop. Enter the password on the laptop, and let the Radio
piggyback on its connection.

2) Talk to the person managing the wireless network. Ask if they can
excempt the Radio from the password check. You'll probably have to give
them the Radio's MAC address for this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Outputting Mono Left and Right channels when synced

2012-03-28 Thread Soulkeeper

Sounds good. The squeezeboxes I sync are 2 Radios, a Touch and a Boom. I
want the Radios to either play Left (L), Right (R) or Middle (M).

Some sync scenarios:
1) Radio L + Radio R.
2) Radio M + Touch + Boom.
3) Radio L + Radio R + Touch + Boom.
4) Radio M + Radio M + Touch + Boom.

The proposed solution would work with scenario 1, 2, and 3. I suppose
an easy solution for scenario 4 (without disabling channel mode) is out
of the question, so I believe the proposed solution is the best
(realistic) option for me too.

I have a feeling that the settings page for that would become extremely
complex. To make the feature complete, you would need to be able to set
up all possible sync group combinations, and then configure the channel
mode for each unit for each of these combinations of synchronized
units.

It would quickly become unmanagable for the average user, and very
complex for the developers to make to begin with. But maybe I'm
over-complicating things?

The pictures are too small to read the text on the ICs, so I don't even
think it's possible to identify the DAC from them.

If you're going to open your own Radio to have a look, I suggest you
start with the headphones out, and follow the traces back from there.

If that leads you to the DAC (maybe there's a small amp in between),
why don't you post a close-up picture of the DAC. Then perhaps somebody
would be able to point out the relevant inputs, or something like that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Issue in Squeezebox server version ...

2011-12-25 Thread Soulkeeper

Whenever your Radio connects to mysqueezebox.com it installs the
firmware for mysqueezebox.com's LMS version, which is 7.7. When it

to your local server version.

The easiest/cleanest solution is arguably to upgrade your local server

How to do this, I don't know, but hopefully you'll find something on

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Program a preset

2011-12-23 Thread Soulkeeper

Have you tried selecting the working favorite, and then very quickly,
before the URL has the time to change, store it as a preset on the
Radio?

If you know your router well, you may be able to slow it down, to give
you a larger window of time to do that.

I'm not sure that this will work even in principle, but maybe worth a
try?

So, I suggest that you:
1) Reset your router to factory defaults.
2) 'Upgrade the firmware'
(http://support.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2595) to the
'newest version'
3) Choose a wireless network name and password of your liking, and
WPA2_PSK encryption (optionally WPA_PSK if WPA2 isn't available).
4) See to that the Max associated setting (if it exists) is greater
than your number of wireless clients.
5) Try it. If it works better, you're good! If not, reset it to factory
defaults again, trash it/sell it, and buy yourself a new router for
christmas.

2011-12-08 Thread Soulkeeper

Most wireless routers have a Max connected clients setting. This
setting applies to concurrent wireless clients, and the default value
on some routers is 8 or 10.

I don't know the default settings of the WGT624, but this model hasn't
always been very popular it seems.
Wikipedia Wrote:
Some internet enthusiast sites reported buggy products in consumer
wireless routers during 2003. For example, there was a class action
lawsuit against the Netgear WGT624, claiming it contained faulty
 hardware or firmware.
Reading through forums on the 'Net, I get the impression that the
WGT624 may be a bit underpowered. But I haven't tried one as far as I
can remember, so I can't say for sure.

What is for sure is that time has passed the 108mbps super G routers.
You'll probably be better off with a Linksys E1000, E2000 or E3000
anyway (which one depends on your wallet and your needs).

UPS seems to have lost my white Radio. I called them and asked for it,
and they told me to tell Logitech to tell them that it's missing. :S

I did, and Logitech support was very helpful (as usual). They sent me
another Radio right away, and will take matters from there with UPS.

Since I told Logitech that the color didn't matter as long as it wasn't
black (because I've got a black one already), a red one is on its way
now. :D Here's hoping UPS doesn't muck it up this time around.

As you realized, it's not PoE, it's EoP. ;)

I use Netgear XAV-2001 HomePlugs myself, they're about as fast as

Since stability is much more important than speed in a Squeezebox
setup, the HomePlug solution is often a good one. But if you want as
many mbps for your buck as possible, 802.11n is still it.

No, the Radio doesn't have karaoke functionality. If you have a

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Plug a microphone?

2011-11-30 Thread Soulkeeper

Just a random thought:

If you're going to write a karaoke applet, you may also want to
phase-shift one channel of the stream 180 degrees before presenting the
mix in mono. That will eliminate most of the lead vocals, as they tend
to be placed in the center of the stereo image.

Doing this at only the frequencies where the human voice is strongest
might be even better (to reduce the risk of accidentially eliminating
other instruments), but I suppose doing that would require the
programming of a DSP, which the Radio doesn't have anyway AFAIK.

job well enough.

Yes. I don't know if there's an upper limit (I've only used two), but
my guess is that you can add at least five or eight alarm schedules,
maybe more.

michael123;656750 Wrote:

Not a dedicated snooze button, no. That's the main reason why people
complain about the UI. But if you push the big center knob, it acts
like a snooze button, and if you push the on/off button, it turns the
alarm all the way off, so I'm good with that.

michael123;656750 Wrote:

It works with either Squeezebox Server, or MySqueezebox.com. So you
need either a local PC, or a working Internet connection.

What other purpose does the battery serve ?

Normally my Radio functions as a bedroom radio/alarm clock, but when I
throw a party, I put it on the balcony, or in the bathroom, or hallway,
or wherever music is needed. If I had to move the PSU too, and crawl
around looking for a power outlet, I probably wouldn't have bothered
(which is probably why my Boom is staying put in the kitchen), but with
the battery installed the Radio can be moved without even interrupting
the music.

And last weekend, I actually brought the Radio, a jack cable, and my
phone to the park for the first time. Something which worked out pretty
well. 6+ hours battery life seems to be more than I need (usually).

The battery in my Radio doesn't get used every day, or even every week,
but it does make the Radio much more versatile. At least for my use. Of
course YMMV.

Yes.

You just arrived at the correct conclusion. :) Choose one server and
stick with it.

SBS should be able to serve all your needs. If SBS needs something done
that only MySb.com can do, it will ask MySB.com to do it, in the
background, without any need of you intervening.

At least that's how it's supposed to work (and for the most part does).
I don't know whether/how your time zone/country issue affects the
interaction/integration between SBS and MySB.com.

Seems like the 'MAC address' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address)
of your Radio matches a MAC address that has been registered to another
user on MySqueezebox.com.

Check that the MAC address on the label under your Radio matches the
MAC address that you can see in the menu under Settings - Advanced -
Network something.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm Incorrect in different Timezone

2011-05-09 Thread Soulkeeper

The alarm using the MySb.com setting instead of the device's setting
makes sense, because the alarm is triggered from MySb.com and not from
the device.

Perhaps it can be viewed as a Squeezebox bug, but it may also be viewed
as a Great Firewall of China bug.

I think you should either set the correct time zone in MySb.com, or
live with the consequences of your decision to spoof the local
settings. Why don't you just set the alarm to go off 7 hours early?
That seems like an easy enough workaround to me.

I don't think anyone else shares the exact problem you have, and I
suspect it is caused by something in your network setup.

So unless you do something about your network, it's probably not going
to fix itself.

You could try these settings, they work well with DD-WRT r14896 running
on a WRT-320N and/or a WRT-160N:

NG-Mixed

Channel Width: 20 MHz.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio battery technical info

2011-04-28 Thread Soulkeeper

I bought the original Logitech pack for a quite different reason:

I simply found it very difficult (in Norway) to obtain high quality
batteries at a low enough price to justify the extra work of soldering
everything together myself. The original battery cost perhaps 10% or
20% more than the best pirate pack I could assemble myself, provided
I could order all the pirate parts in one shipment to save on the
shipping costs. Which it turned out, I couldn't.

When I also considered the risk of blowing the warranty, and/or blowing
the Radio itself, the choice was pretty clear.

No, it shouldn't. N-mode should be 100% backwards compatible with

What wireless channels are you trying? I know that some Squeezebox
units have problems connecting to channels 12, 13, 14.

Can you set up your old router to use with the Squeezeboxen (and other
G units) while keeping your new router for your laptop(s) (N-mode

as long as you see to that the channels 'don't overlap'

it was 'some local boys' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datarock) from

in my Radio. :P I was a bit surprised that the 'Bergen Wave'

With stereo speakers and no battery or color display, it looks more like

Stereo 2W speakers sounds a little less optimal than bi-amped two way

the wattage of the Radio but it's probably at least 10W.

But the RCA outputs is a nice touch, I guess. Does it play FLAC?

You can also try to change the wireless channel that your router uses.
Consult the router's documentation to see how to do this.

If all else fails, you can use a network cable instead of wireless.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox keeps on losing connection to reuter

2011-01-02 Thread Soulkeeper

The easiest way may be this:

1) Find the IP of your Radio.
2) Ping the radio (open CMD in Windows and enter ping 111.222.333.444
(substitute the Radio's IP address for 111.222.333.444) to confirm that
the Radio answers ping calls. There should be four pings and four
replies.
3) Turn the Radio full off, and/or disconnect it from the network.
4) Ping the radio again. If something answers, it's not the radio,
which means that another device is using the same IP.

I don't think you can control the Radio's (or other SqueezeOS players')
IR functionality from the web interface.

Look here:

You need to be logged in to edit the wiki IIRC. I think you can use the
same user account as in the forum. Then you can just hit the edit
tab.

But why don't you go for the automated method (unless it's been broken
lately)? Besides being easier to install, enable and disable (at least
requiring less technical know-how), it has automatic Reinstall after
firmware update, which is an advantage in any case.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problem with Logitech's business practices for the Squeezebox

2010-12-07 Thread Soulkeeper

When I contemplated building my own battery for the Radio, I had
problems finding cheap parts with cheap shipping.

I ended up with the choice between building a $40 pirate battery or
buying a $50 original battery.

I admit I didn't go to any enormous effort looking for parts, and
Norwegian prices can be high, but anyway, buying the original battery
from Logitech was what made sense for me.

 help with anger management.

Everybody can get angry at a $150 plastic radio. But to be able to stay
angry for months and months ... well, there are two possible outcomes as
far as I can see:
1) Seek professional psychological help (yes, a shrink).
2) Weit for the massive cardiac arrest that is just around the corner,
and spend rest of an all too short life in a hospital bed.

There is one outcome, however, that is completely out of the question,
as far as I've still got a gram of discernment in me:
3) Logitech giving a s**t about your butthurtery.

Feel free to ignore my prognosis and continue to fight the valiant (but
pathetic) battle for ... um, consumer rights, a different SB Radio, the
death of Logitech or whatever the hell it is that you're fighting for.
(Don't bother to tell me; you're on my block list, and I lost interest
in your agenda a long time ago, anyway. I just wanted to give you a
little bit of useful advice, but again, feel free to ignore it.)

As garym mentions; if your laptop can't connect, your SB probably won't
be able to either. If your laptop can connect, your SB may or may not be
able to.

Unfortunately, there's only one way to find out for sure. ;)
Moving the router around may help, btw. And pulling cable -always-
helps (at least up to 100 meters).
