[SlimDevices: Radio] Streaming BBC On Demand Programmes

2009-11-22 Thread fernandoweb

Hi there. Sorry if there's an obvious answer to this but I haven't had
any luck finding one. I've just got a Squeezebox Radio after owning a
Logik internet radio for years which gave me the ability to listen to On
Demand shows on BBC stations without my PC being turned on, yet I can't
seem to find how to do this on the Squeezebox. (Tbh I can't even manage
to do it with my PC turned on now as I can't get anything from the Apps
bit other than streaming live radio). Is there a way to do this or is
it not possible?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Streaming BBC On Demand Programmes

2009-11-23 Thread bpa

You need a PC to listen to BBC iPlayer Listen Again.

To listen to BBC "Listen Again" you need to install the BBCiPlayer
plugin on your PC NAS. You can find the BBCiPlayer plugin on WebUI
Settings/Plugins - check the BBCiPlayer plugin and then click Apply -
SBS will need to be restarted.

To play BBC Listen Again - the player needs to support the protocol
being used which is currently RealAudio, Flash/AAC or Flash/MP3 (UK
only). From Mar 2010 RealAudio will be dropped and WMA is supposed to
replace it.

The older generation of SB players does not support RealAudio or AAC so
transcode support is needed which is the main reason a PC is needed and
why it made no sense for MySB to support "Listen Again".

The new generation of players have the capability to support more
protocols. Initially Touch and Radio only supported AAC and BBCiPlayer
handled the Flash protocol and the audio stream was passed without
transcoding to Touch/Radio. The latest beta have Flash protocol handled
by Radio / Touch so the processing by SBS is now minimal suitable for
low powered NAS based servers or even Touch.

The BBC have started "Listen Again" in WMA format.

At Beebotron they have a web page with WMA links for Listen Again (
http://beebotron.org/index3lite.php?reload )

If the Beebotron guys could be persuaded to put this page up in OPML or
RSS format as well then BBC Listen Again could be available without a PC
to SB3, Boom, Transporter as well as Touch and radio.

Beebotron. What a funny site. Is it designed for the Lynx browser?

It's far too forgiving of the BBC for me.

It is quite an old site. Designed for mobile phone of a few years ago
which had minimal browsers. The intent was for users to just click the
program they want to play as RealPlayer is available for most mobiles.

The original Beebotron used the same technique as AlienBBC - web screen
scraping.

I've just received my SQ Radio and have been having the same problem as

So is there no way of using iPlayer listen again feature without ones
PC turned on? That's the main reason I bought it!

Interesting. I've just noticed www.mysqueezebox.com has a Podcast
Player app. This appears to want an OPML feed (or perhaps RSS). The Beeb
has a podcast page, e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/, but I
can't find a feed. So you're saying if we could find a feed then we
could get a list of Listen Again podcasts, and then select on to play as
MP3 (rather than Real Audio)?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Streaming BBC On Demand Programmes

2009-12-18 Thread bpa

The URL which provides a complete list of BBC podcast in OPML format is
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/opml/bbc_podcast_opml.opml

Some podcasts can only be played if you are in the UK and some are
"enhanced" which have video and can result in problems in playback.

Podcasts are only a small subset of what is available from "Listen
Again". There is some hope as BBC is making progress with "Listen
Again" in WMA format although it is still testing. Once BBC have
finalised their WMA offering - it should be possible to be more
definitive about whether the WMA version of "Listen Again" could be made
available from a private website to players on MySB.com.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radiolabs/2009/12/wma_listen_again.shtml

Until BBCiPlayer is implemented on mysqueezebox.com, you will need to
run Squeezebox Server on a local device. This needn't be a PC - for
example, you could use the QNAP NAS as a fit-and-forget solution.

There are other possibilities.

Such as on Beebotron or iplayerconverter which currently provides URLs
for the RealAudio stream but RealAudio will be gone in March 2010 and I
expect these sites will move over to the WMA URLs.

Thanks for this bpa! I added
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/opml/bbc_podcast_opml.opml as a "BBC
Podcasts" item on the Podcast app on MySB.com - I can then browse the
podcast from my radio. Strangley not all of them seem to work (perhaps
due to errors in the opml feed or content being removed?).

I've also downloaded both "BBC iPlayer" and bpa's excellent "BBC
iPlayer Extras" app to my LinkStation NAS SC/SBS.

I find this business of switching between the local SBS (for BBC
iPlayer/Extras, my music) and MySB.com (for the BBC app for live radio)
a bit confusing though - you really want it be transparent to the user
most of the time. Ideally I think I'd just have my NAS powered up when
I'm likely to listen to music and use MySB.com for everything else
(including occasional very early alarms).

Finally it would be great when there is some standardisation on what
the BBC provides - for a novice it's tricky to know what to use.
(perhaps I'll write a SB wiki page when I've finally worked it out
myself!)

if using the opml on MySB - then the OPML feed will be processed by
MySB server based in Germany and perhaps BBC will not supply the UK only
podcast through this servers.

Try the OPML feed URL as a Favorite on your SBS.

Two solutions to avoid switching.
1. Use the live streams on BBCiPlayer
2. Install BBC App when connected to SBS

The BBCiPlayer written by Triode (not Logitech) use an XML feed from
the BBC. BBCiPlayerExtra written by bpa (not Logitech) uses RSS feeds
from BBC. BBC App written by Logitech uses WMA URLs . Posdcast player
fromLogitechs using a BBC OPML feeds.

Standardisation is difficult since BBC haven't got a single uniform
source of programs (XML, RSS, OPML and URLs) and you have 3 authors.

Thanks for the comments bpa.

1. I'm sure when I tried to use the live streams on BBCiPlayer it
didn't play - perhaps the SB Radio can't play the format and the
LinkStation NAS with 7.3.3 can't decode it either. Or maybe it was a
problem with my broadband connection (my ISP has just implemented
traffic shaping in a sledgehammer manner).

2. Yes I wondered about that, but unfortunately the BBC App doesn't
show up under my Plugins settings, possibly because it's 7.3.3 not
7.4.x? Is there a Logitech repository URL I can use (like I did to see
your BBCiPlayerExtra app) or will I have to wait for 7.4?

(7.4 is not currently available on LS stock firmware - see various
discussions on 3rd Party Hardware forum)

I heard on the news today that BBC have announced some iPlayer "net TV"
standardisation (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8426104.stm) so
maybe this will trickle down to radio content too. I suppose what I'd
expect from the BBC is a definitive list of format(s) and the same
content on all of them. That said I assume this is a learning period for
them too to try and work out what formats become most common etc.

It's great that there are knowledgable people on the forums to fill in
the gaps for us!

SBRadio and Touch have the best support and Radio can in fact support
BBC Flash/AAC natively (currently in test).

By default BBCiPlayer will play Flash/AAC for Live and Listen Again.
You Linkstation may not be set up with the correct version of faad (to
decode AAC) or else not powerful enough - in which change the BBCiPlayer
setting to prefer WMA.

BBC App is an App not a Plugin so you'll find it under App gallery to
install and My Apps when installed.

Simon300,

I think you BBCiPlayer / SBRadio problems arise because it seems you
are using 7.3 with an SB Radio. 7.4 is the minimum supported SBS version
for SBRadio
