Re: [RBASE-L] - Disappearing text
Karen, I do not know the answer to the network but I have seen enough strangeness over networks to question it. Currently on my network there is a large slowdown that occurs at random that I haven't been able to pinpoint. Maybe Mike Byerly can shed some light on network vagaries, like random polling and such. Made sure I ran the exact build of RBase as they are. Did the "edit using", sat on a field and waited, and the text never disappeared. So doesn't appear to be a form setting Can a network fire off a "save work" command? The value of the variable is truly null when you exit the form. Specifics: 1. Form is based on a table brought up with "edit using" on just one row of data. No processing is done before the form is brought up. Literally one line of code in the main menu option. 2. In addition to table fields I have a variable edit and a variable memo. Both variables are initialized to null on the form's before-start EEP, one is text type and one is note type. 3. The disappearing happens on both of the variable fields. Whether you are on the text edit or the memo edit, they will disappear. Only the one you are on will disappear; i

Uses six Enhanced Group Boxes as containers for the data. The Goal: to be able to scale the form to fit on a laptop. The form is 1863 wide and 1066 high. The Border Style is set to sizable. The setup works fine on 24 or 27 inch displays. So, one of the people on our team, Jim, did the following: I found if the screen resolution on my laptop is set to 1920x1080 (recommended setting), the form displays correctly. However, I use a lower resolution of 1440x900 to make it easier to see. One option is to manually set the Windows screen resolution to 1920x1080 when displaying the form. Another is to hardcode the resolution to 1920 in the After Start EEP: PROPERTY RBASE_FORM SCALEBY '1920' Finally, it could be programmed in the After Start EEP with something like the following SET VAR vRes TEXT = (CVAL('SCREENSIZE')) -- Get screen size (e.g. 1440,900) SET VAR vSize TEXT = (SSUB(vRes,1)) -- Get first number (e.g. 1440) SET VAR vNewSize TEXT = NULL -- New screen size -- Resolution must be at least 1920 x 1080 for Property Search form to fit on the screen. If less, then set to 1920, else leave as is. IF vSize < '1920' THEN SET VAR vNewSize = '1920' ELSE SET VAR vNewSize = vSize ENDIF PROPERTY RBASE_FORM SCALEBY .vNewSize Note: I found the following in the Properties document for RBase Forms, but could not get it to work. PROPERTY RBASE_FORM SCALEBY 'FILL_SCREEN' Possibly there is another way to approach this. It's not something I've worked with before. Re: [RBASE-L] - eMail table structure
Karen, Nice. Thanks a lot! Jan From: "'Karen Tellef' via RBASE-L" To: "rbase-l@googlegroups.com" Date: Wed, 4 May 2022 16:52:43 + (UTC) Subject: Re: [RBASE-L] - eMail table structure Jan: I have one application with this ability. The structure was started by another programmer, so I don't take full credit. It isn't perfect, as we added features over the years and would've done it differently if I had designed it today. Here's the structure of the table (not all the columns), along with a description of what some of the columns are for. We have a scheduled task that runs every 20 minutes, scans the table for "xDateTimeSent is null". Cursors thru the rows, sends out using RMail, updates the xDateTimeSent. The program that deciphers all the elements is quite complicated. It was originally set up to send emails to "groups" (ReptGroup). There's a maintenance table that has a group name and a list of email addresses. So different programs will send emails to different "groups" of people (a group could have just one person). Later on, we needed the ability for users to send emails to specific people, not a group, so we created an AlertDetail table that has the to / from / cc information. It works really well for us. Table: Alert CmdFileType : TEXT 50 This is the name of the RBase program that created the email ReptGroup Type : TEXT 8 The group the email is sent to; lookup to another table for email addresses xDateTime Type : DATETIME NOT NULL When the email was inserted xDateTimeSent Type : DATETIME When the email was sent by RMail AlertSubject Type : NOTE AlertFailedType : DATETIME If RMail failed, date put here EmailTypeIDType : INTEGERDefault: 1 1 = look at ReptGroup, 2 = look at AlertDetail table for email address AlertEmailType Type : TEXT 4 Default: TEXT This was added when we started using HTML as the body on some emails. Would have the word "HTML" AlertFileAttachType : TEXT 120 Name of a file to attach AlertNote Type : NOTE If the email body is just a string text, it goes in here AlertTxtFile Type : TEXT 120 Or the email body can be contained in an external file, either ascii or html. So this would be the filename, like F:\EmailFiles\Orders.txt Hope this gives you some ideas!! Goal: to have the external form refresh itself (say every 5 minutes) without closing and opening the form. Help shows that a ‘regular’ form can use the: ‘SET REFRESH value’ to refresh a form, no mention of an external form. All, I thought I'd seen this before but I'm not sure. Most of the time printing a report to SCREEN is the preferred option. However, when I want to "Print to a file" from the SCREEN, the file name shows as the called report i.e. PRINT MyReport shows up as MyReport in the print to file area. The user is given the option either to enter a new row or to edit an existing row. If a new row, then a blank form is displayed. If an existing row, then the user selects a row from a drop down list based on a date. My question is how to get the form to display the row that was selected? I've tried the EDIT USING command with a WHERE clause from within an EEP to select the desired row and display the information on the form. This works, but opens a new instance of the form. What I have done is to print the report using OPTION PDF and then launch it (most files using PDF are already associated with Adobe reader). Then you copy your text. From: To: Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2021 02:38:14 -0500 Subject: RE: [RBASE-L] - Copy from Rbase Report to Clipboard You can click on the Printer icon on the upper left corner and then check print to file, select a format such as PDF and assign a name: When you click OK you will be prompted to select options: Click open to generate and OK and the report will be opened as PDF and you can select and save to the Windows clipboard as needed. Of course you can send the report directly to a PDF file with a command: PRINT YourReportName WHERE….. Order BY ….OPTION PDF |FILENAME xxx.PDF |OPEN ON And the file xxx.PDF will open with the report. Dan, I'm not sure how you accomplish this. You have rightly noted that you have the "on drop" eep that you can work with. But the initiate "on drag" doesn't really work because you attempting to grab something outside of R:Base. Perhaps Mike Byerly or Razzak knows a trick on this one. They would like to be able to just drag the files from outlook to the rbase ticket and it will automatically do the same. The differences are: On beforehand I perform some calculations like counting the number of columns in all tables and the total number of rows in the database It looks like this: SET VAR V_SYS_NUM_COLUMNS_ATL BIGINT = 0 SET VAR V_SYS_NUM_ROWS_ATL BIGINT = 0 SET VAR V_TOTAAL BIGINT = 0 -- SELECT SUM(SYS_NUM_COLUMNS) INTO V_SYS_NUM_COLUMNS_ATL INDICATOR V_IND01S FROM SYS_TABLES WHERE SYS_TABLE_TYPE = 'Table' SELECT SUM(SYS_NUM_ROWS) INTO V_SYS_NUM_ROWS_ATL INDICATOR V_IND02S FROM SYS_TABLES WHERE SYS_TABLE_TYPE = 'Table' -- SET VAR V_TOTAAL = (.V_SYS_NUM_COLUMNS_ATL + .V_SYS_NUM_ROWS_ATL) Then I perform a reload with setting error messages on. The following function return the first weekend date for whatever DATE you enter: SET VAR vToday DATE = (DWE(.#DATE)) Now you have the next Saturday’s date, so you just need to subtract 5 days for the previous Monday and 1 for the previous Friday. set var vStart DATE = (ADDDAY(.vToday, -5)) set var vEnd DATE = (ADDDAY(.vToday, -1)) And you will have the beginning and end dates for the week and you can easily format them. You can probably combine the commands into one long command, but it would be more difficult to read in the future. You can also use the function IDWk which will tell which day of the week for any date. Then you can use a simple CASE construct to add or subtract days accordingly. I can think of other ways but the ones I mentioned are simple and easy to understand. Hopefully, this is what you were looking for. Mike, I'm going out on a limb here. I'm not sure there is a standardized XML format so you kind of have to look at the data presented and see what you can do with it. Re: [RBASE-L] - Choose command with headers
Karen, I guess I would have just done a quick form using a VariableListView. Jan From: "'Karen Tellef' via RBASE-L" To: "rbase-l@googlegroups.com" Date: Tue, 23 Feb 2021 15:06:52 + (UTC) Subject: [RBASE-L] - Choose command with headers I played around with being able to put HEADERS above the columns in a CHOOSE command. I think every programmer has wanted that since the "beginning of time"! I started out with RBTI's example code that runs against ConComp and it works great to display 2 columns of data. What I tried to do was add a third column to their example (the sys_table_type in the command below). It took quite a while, but my conclusions are: 1. You must have Vertical Lines ON. I am unable to get it to work without having vertical lines on. 2. I then fiddled with the Vertical Line Breaks line until the headers lined up perfect with the vertical lines. No rhyme or reason, I just plugged in random numbers til it worked. 3. Then I played with the Text Breaks line until the data all lined up perfectly. Has anyone used this? Am I correct in that you must have Vertical Lines ON? And I'm guessing there's no shortcut to guessing on the 2 list of numbers since pixels would depend on your font size, etc. I'll attach a picture of my choose command with the 3rd column added. Code below. CHOOSE vTableViewName FROM #VALUES FOR + ((LJS(SYS_TABLE_NAME,35))&LJS(SYS_COMMENT,75) & ljs(sys_table_type,10)),SYS_TABLE_NAME FROM SYS_TABLES + WHERE SYS_TABLE_TYPE <> 'SYSTEM TABLE' ORDER BY SYS_TABLE_NAME ASC + CHKBOX 1 TITLE 'Select Table/View' + CAPTION 'Tables' LINES 26 FORMATTED + OPTION TITLE_BACK_COLOR WHITE + |TITLE_FONT_NAME Segoe UI + |TITLE_FONT_SIZE 16 + |TITLE_FONT_COLOR BLACK + |TITLE_BOLD ON + |LIST_BACK_COLOR WHITE + |LIST_FONT_NAME Tahoma + |LIST_FONT_SIZE 9 + |LIST_FONT_COLOR NAVY + |WINDOW_BACK_COLOR WHITE + |BUTTON_OK_CAPTION &Continue + |BUTTON_CANCEL_CAPTION C&ancel + |BUTTONS_SHOW_GLYPH ON + |LINE_COLOR black + |ZEBRA_STRIPES ON + |ZEBRA_ODD_COLOR 3DLIGHT + |ZEBRA_EVEN_COLOR WINDOW + |HORIZONTAL_LINES ON + |VERTICAL_LINES ON + |VERTICAL_LINE_BREAKS 150,450 + |TEXT_BREAKS 36,112 + |HEADERS Table Name,Description,Type Karen -- For group guidelines, visit http://www.rbase.com/support/usersgroup_guidelines.php --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBASE-L" group. Re: [RBASE-L] - Using Variable Lookup List to move data between tables
Javier, Karen beat me to it. I really like Variable list views. You can also due a "Multi-drag and drop" using the shift or ctrl shift keys. Jan From: "'Karen Tellef' via RBASE-L" To: "rbase-l@googlegroups.com" Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2020 14:07:10 + (UTC) Subject: Re: [RBASE-L] - Using Variable Lookup List to move data between tables Javier: Have you looked at the "drag and drop"? It's on the right-click properties of list views. You enable it first, then do the EEPs. I've done it once or twice, I'd have to look in my notes where I might've kept examples of how I did mine. So I can't give you examples without looking. Likewise, when I click on a record on the selected _records table, it is removed from the selected_records table and the driving_table display that record again since it is no longer in the selected_records table and thus it is available for re-selection if needed. Hopefully this makes sense. In the past I have used two Variable Lookup List boxes, the first with the driving_table data and the second with the selected_records data and use "on click" to move record back and forth. Once the desired records are selected I merge them into one combined record and store it in a separate table. Is this still the preferred way to do this or is there a better approach? I actually would prefer using two grids but I have not tried this approach. Any suggestions or simpler/easier approach that you might have will be appreciated. It's not a date range, the two dates are used independently for two types of calculations, but the 2nd calculation is not required. The form is very easy to use and users can pick any date span very quickly with a few mouse clicks. The form is pre-set with the current year pre-selected but you can pre-select any date range. The more used time spans can be easily selected by clicking on the appropriate range. When you select a range, the corresponding start and end dates are updated on the red colored fields at the bottom. You can select a specific date span by clicking on the arrows next to the “From” and “To” dates (highlighted in yellow) and the calendar will pop with the current date highlighted where you can select a custom date. 9 out of 10 times the required time span needed is one of the pre-programmed time spans, at least in my application, but you have the freedom to select a custom time span. You can modify the form to include date spans that fit you applications. The form returns the To and From date values a 2 variables, vFrom Date and vTo Date. Database Explorer > Main Menu > Utilities > Attach SQL Database Tables This is where you will see the list of all tables and views While SATTACHing, you will have the option to attach that table as: . Attach As Alias . Attach As Temporary . Attach USING ALL Once SATTACHed successfully, you can review everything and then write a command file to accomplish the exact same task automatically. That's all there is to it! The beauty is, once the ODBC connection is created and you SATTACH the database when you look at “Attach SQL Database Tables” (ignore the SQL) it lists all the tables in the database. Re: [RBASE-L] - Is there a limit to PDF printing?
Karen, My recommendation is the individual statements. We print statements to PDF's and they are stored on the server so we can always go back for them. Also the statement program runs on the server at about 2AM on the last day of the month. So much faster than the user pressing a "print statement" button. Jan From: "'Karen Tellef' via RBASE-L" To: rbase-l@googlegroups.com Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2019 16:16:51 + (UTC) Subject: [RBASE-L] - Is there a limit to PDF printing? I have an app that prints thousands of statements a month, and the program hasn't changed much since 6.5 days. Each statement is calculated one at a time and printed one at a time. Most of the time the computer will lock up during the printing, which I assume is because RBase is printing so fast to the spooler, and the network/spooler/printer simply cannot keep up with the number of files waiting to print, and at some point RBase can no longer send jobs to the print queue. Luckily I've programmed it so that the user can come back in and easily continue where it left off, but it's a pain to have to do that. We've tried building in "waits" after so many statements print, but the program ended up taking like 6 hrs to run! And yes, believe it or not, they are mailing the statements to their customers and have no wish to email them. So I'm thinking of utilizing PDFs instead, and I have the choice of generating 1000s of individual PDFs (where the user can then highlight multiple PDFs, right-click, "print" at their own schedule), or generating one huge multi-1000s page PDF. I have never created that big of a PDF. Is there a reasonable limit to the #pages RBase can print to a PDF file? Can someone tell me the largest PDF file they've ever generated? Re: [RBASE-L] - simple question
Jim, I think I remember that you are running compiled. Did you include Steel Blue as an additional resource in your compiler? As an aside, it may be beneficial to move from themes in database. They are overhead and slow it down. Jan From: Jim Belisle To: "rbase-l@googlegroups.com" Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2019 16:28:43 + Subject: [RBASE-L] - simple question I bring up the pause with gauge box quite often when running reports. In my test DB the gauge comes up properly (colors, etc). In my application it is all plain and not fancy like it should be. I still see only the outline and hardly see the lettering. What setting in my CFG or startup file do I need to change in order to have the gauge look like it should? Re: [RBASE-L] - MIssing object
All, Never mind. I found a workaround. Jan From: "jan johansen" To: rbase-l@googlegroups.com Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2019 11:20:44 -0700 Subject: [RBASE-L] - MIssing object Group, Somewhere along the way, I've made an object in a form not visible. When I run the form, the object appears. However when I try to design the form, the object is not visible. I've tried using the object inspector, but I'm not finding it. Suggestions?
