2009-01-09 Thread Bill Rhea

Aha! When ordering at Riv I always have to tell them I'm "San Carlos"
Bill Rhea so as to not be confused with my (Portland?) doppleganger.
I've never met anybody else with my surname that wasn't direct family,
so it's doubly coincidental that my alter ego also rides a Riv

If you see him, please send him my greetings!

My Rambouillet was a "sneak in" purchase...so was the Atlantis come to
think of it...

I spent a couple of years working full time and going to business
school (dang near killed me but that's a different story). After
months of lusting over an orange Rambouillet I decided to purchase a
64cm frame. My wife, smart, observant woman that she is, tends to
notice things, so I thought I should mention the purchase before the
large box arrived on our doorstep.

Me: "Honey...err...I bought myself a gradution present."

Wife: "What did you get?"

Me: "Guess!"

Wife: "OH GOD...Not another bike!"

[RBW] Nitto Big Rear Rack

2009-01-09 Thread mok

Hello all,

I am a newbie to the site. I just received my above rack. It looks
wonderful and solid. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had the same
issue I am having. The top of the rear SKS fender, which I bought
here, hits the bottom of the rack. It is on the upper eyelet, and it
is all level, but it still hits just a bit to much. I would like to
raise the fender just a bit to get better tire clearence. I was
wondering if they (or anyone) makes an adapter or something to
actually raise the rear rack vertically. I could alway rigs something
from a custom piece of SS, but I would like to use what was made for
this if at all.

I appreciate any advise and comments on this. Happy New Year to
all.

Mok

Grant wrote in a Reader a couple of years back about creating a 603mm
BSD rim size designed mostly to allow 700c racing bikes to take a
fatter tire. The idea is that you gain some clearance, but for frames
that were designed for short reach brakes, you can still reach the
rims with longer caliper brakes. Often a 700c->650b conversion will
need to use very long-reach brakes, which get pretty flexy and low on
stopping power.

I'd like to drop the wheel size from the stock 630,
but 622 is still a little large and the 584 is a little small, no
sweet spots in between. Is there a wheel size around 600mm?

If things get really tight, you can store it in an undisclosed location in
Orange County. I'll even pickup in San Diego, & give you a claim check.

Think about it guys - you've only got 1 atmosphere of pressure at sea level.
Look at your tire gauge & you'll see it goes to probably 10 atmospheres.
You actually inflate to 5 to maybe 8 atmospheres (if you really like a rough
ride). Pump your tire to 5 atm (roughly 75 psi) & take it into space.
You've only reduced the exterior support by 1 atm or the difference between
pumping to 5 atm & 6 atm (roughly 90 psi).

Maybe we should still send David into space, just to be sure!

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Bleriot and Quickbeam

2009-01-09 Thread Esteban

Very inspirational story! David, you're so right. So, I took a 60
mile ride today on the Romulus, and stopped in a bike shop to look
around and take a break. An employee said, "Nice bike - how old is
it?" Instead of saying "2003," I should have said, "Thrift store
find." That would help with my working-class upbringing hang-up about
appearing to spend a lot of money on something like a bicycle.

Atmospheric pressure is only 14.7 PSI at sea level. I'm sure most
tires can handle that much extra.

[RBW] Re: Rivlike Bikes

2009-01-09 Thread Bill M.

AASHTA - http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

Per Sheldon, 26 x 1 3/8 (E.A.3) three speed size = 650a = 590 mm.
Harris Cyclery shows Sun CR18 and some Weinmann rims in stock in
650a. The Col del la Vie is available in 650a, and Schwalbe makes
several 590 tires in cluding one in creme.

Rims: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/rims/590.html

Tires: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/rims/590.html
http://www.schwalbetires.com/product_search?op0=OR&filter0%5B%5D=590-20&filter0%5B%5D=590-25&filter0%5B%5D=590-28%2F32&filter0%5B%5D=590-37&filter0%5B%5D=609-40

Grant at some point proposed a new size half way between 650b and 700c
(603?), but it's nothing more than an idea AFAIK. Schwalbe has one
tire in 609 mm - I have no idea what that fits!

won't fit (and wouldn't look right anyway!). I have a sweet Velo-

[RBW] Re: Rivlike Bikes

2009-01-09 Thread colin p. cummings

It's a money thing, but it would be painful. I'm trying to find a way
to keep one, which is preferable.

Thanks for all the info everyone. Besides my 59 Bleriot and unbuilt
58 Saluki, I have a 74(ish) repainted Raleigh International. the
raliegh is okay, I'd like to drop the wheel size from the stock 630,
but 622 is still a little large and the 584 is a little small, no
sweet spots in between. Is there a wheel size around 600mm?
