Re: [RBW] Re: Continuing Quickbeam Saga
The rim reflectors are from a company called Fun Reflectors (http://www.funreflector.com/ ). They make reflective tape in a variety of fun shapes and colors (http://funreflector.com/gallery.html ). The rim reflectors are here: http://funreflector.com/shop/ shop.html (scroll down to the bottom of the page). Their black reflective tape is very cool--not quite as reflective, but during the day it's almost invisible when applied to black surfaces (I have some on the black rims of another bike). --Eric www.wheelsnorth.org www.campyonly.com On Jan 2, 2010, at 5:04 PM, manueljohnacosta wrote: > the light looks good! the reflecting tape around the rim is clever. > did you cut the tape yourself ? > -Manny > > -- > > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google > Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. > To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners- > bu...@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > rbw-owners-bunch+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com > . > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch?hl=en > . > > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I don't have a wife or a girlfriend but I do have some recommendations. Lately I've been loving Ibex woolie tops for riding and just wearing around. They're better looking and also more comfortable than the Riv stuff. My favorite style is the zip T-neck. On cold days (for here-- I live in the San Francisco Bay Area) I layer an Ibex zipfront Shak over the woolie. http://www.ibexwear.com/shop/product/1355/8742/womens-woolies-zip-t-neck-stripe http://www.ibexwear.com/shop/product/1367/8447/womens-shak-full-zip And for touring, I bring along this cozy wool jacket. The hood fits closely, so I can put my helmet over it. http://www.ibexwear.com/shop/product/1394/7440/womens-carrie-fz-hoody Ibex also sells wool shorts, but I still remember the wool cycling shorts of yore, so I haven't tried the Ibex ones. I might relent and try these knickers, though. They look great. http://www.ibexwear.com/shop/product/1482/8990/womens-el-fito-three-quarter-bike-knickers Searching around, I found these good-looking wool riding knickers: http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodSM_7572.html That's a Team Estrogen page. Re: [RBW] Re: Continuing Quickbeam Saga
That is indeed a Sturmey Archer hub. And yes, the cabling and mounting is much cleaner than the Rohloff, although that's a very fine unit as well. I particularly like the J-Tek bar-end shifter (many thanks to the member on this list who let me know about them, and to Jim at Hiawatha Cycles for getting it to me). I like the non-aero routing of the cables, which I think lends the bike a more classic look. I've just finished reading and drooling over "The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles" (Christmas gift from my mother-in-law), and it confirmed my notions of how a randonneuring bike should look. And ... the rear wheel has to be deflated to get it in and out of the frame. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward. The cable for the shift mechanism comes on and off the hub without tools, and the wheel is otherwise like a singlespeed or fixed gear from that point on. --Eric www.wheelsnorth.org www.campyonly.com On Jan 2, 2010, at 6:21 PM, Patrick in VT wrote: > On Jan 2, 8:36 pm, Bill Gibson wrote: >> That Rohloff hub is amazing; I hope you've seen this: > > by the looks of the cables, that's not a rohloff. > > also by the looks of the cables, non-aero levers are going on my next > project bike. love it. > > Eric - do you have that rear fender optimized for wheel removal? > track ends + fenders + IG hub seems like it could be a little finicky. > > -- > > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google > Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Making MKS Touring Pedals greasable.
I recently took my MKS touring pedals off my commuter because there was a horrible creak coming from them. I am now using my Grip Kings. I did order one of those MKS dust cap wrenchs from Rivendell last week, along with some other things, and so will soon be back to using the touring pedals on my commuter after I regrease the pedals. I find that I like them more than the GK. [RBW] Re: Question about women's riding clothes (not for me)
You're right. MUSA is made to fit a male body. The upside is that Grant likes clothing that fits loose and comfortable, so MUSA stuff tends to be designed on a full cut. For things that are more female-form-fitting and even "girly", I really like SWRVE (http://www.swrvestore.com/). It's US-made apparel and many of their styles are womens' specific without being lycra- esque. I have a pair of their knickers that are stylish without being super-clingy. And durable! I'm going into my third year with them as a regular three-season garment, and they're good as new. Suggestion: perhaps ask your wife to get more directly involved in ordering her cycling clothing? Sometimes women are better at describing their fit needs themselves than men are doing it for them. Just a thought. [RBW] Making MKS Touring Pedals greasable.
A few years ago I made the MKS touring pedals on my All-Rounder/ Atlantis "greaseable." I like to "re-grease" these pedals if I spend a lot of time riding in the rain (they are not sealed very well), and I really don't want to disassemble them to do this. These pedals have been spinning smoothly for quite a few years now. Having a bit of time on my hands over the holidays I made a second set of MKS touring pedals greasable. I have put the photos in this flickr set. http://www.flickr.com/photos/16951...@n08/sets/72157623125403996/ I would enjoy seeing what unique things y'all do to you Rivendell's to make them more serviceable/functional/comfortable/durable. Angus P.S. You can just see in one of the photos three black zip ties on the rear side of one of the pedals. When I started riding the Quickbeam fixed I was having trouble flipping my foot into the pedal consistently, with the zip ties it works every time. :-) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Good read
Found on this blog: http://www.freemantransport.com/blog/page/3/ Writer: Jason Sager Everyone crosses thresholds in life. Epiphanies and realizations are the markers on the journey. Sometimes the transitions through these are smooth and vague…we cross them before realizing they’ve even transpired. However, this one was more abrupt. Taking off my shoes as I always do, in that same camp chair in the garage that’s treated me so well after cold rides, rainy rides, dusty and hot rides, and perfect rides, I realized the inevitable. I’ve seen the world. I know nothing. And worse…I no longer was young. Its been ten years since the bike began taking me around the world. Ten years of living life through the bubble of racing, ten years that it showed me around the planet, uncovered hidden layers within myself, and exposed the beauty, the dirty, and the natural essence of ourselves and others, all from a pair of pedals and a handle bar. But seeing the world from the bike happens from more than just “on” the bike. On the bike we find ourselves, but through the bike we see everything else. The fatigue, the hunger, an insatiable appetite to get out and discover, challenge, and grow. The places and people that go with this world are the sparks, our presence in those situations, the fuel for the fire of growth. Sitting in that chair I realized, with complete brilliance, that 1999 was a decade ago. Like all men, there was a time when I was a boy, and then became a man. We always look back and see ourselves, at any given point, as having known it all, yet knowing nothing, depending on the perspective that the glimpse is coming from. The bike, and the journey that it took me on has, and hopefully will continue to, shape me as the person and man I strive to be. It shapes by contrasts, by challenges, and by opening up opportunities. Sometimes its from inside the bubble – the pedaling, riding, and the racing is all the same thing happening in different environments. It challenges me to adapt, and gives me the time, and impetus, to discover what is required. But other times, its the only constant we have when juggling and striving to contain the rest that life throws at us. The bubble of this journey provides the constant that insulates us from the outside world, while at the same time being the conduit through which we experience everything that is out there. Ten years ago, it was just me, a man then, but a boy to me now…with a bike and uncharted experiences that unfolded as I stumbled through them. Now, I’m 35, a man who is a father that’s responsible for teaching his boy. I can look back on where that bike took me, what I learned from the saddle, from the people that it allowed me to cross paths with, and look for how I can apply that journey to my current life, and look forward to where it’ll take me next, as well as the path that it holds for my little boy, who’s yet to discover the joys of two wheeled freedom. The bike is only a part of that freedom, but often, the overlap of vehicle for escape and discovery are symmetrical and happen without notice. That’s how I know its a good ride. Check out the blog, better pictures there. -Manny -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Question about women's riding clothes (not for me)
Both Ibex and Joneswares offer women specific wool cycling clothes. Ibex has non wool items as well. From: Kip Otteson Anyway, it seems like all the Riv gear is oriented towards men. Anybody know of Musa type stuff that is made for women? I'll get her going on some wool tops from Riv, but the bottoms are not as flattering. Anyone's wives or girlfriends have any recommendations? She's not a fashion person at all, but the more I can get her stuff that works the more she'll ride. Thanks. Re: [RBW] Re: New favorite tire
Mine measured 28 mm on the erstwhile Weinmann Concaves and, now, 29 mm on the Alex DH 19s scavenged from the Monocog. They have a roundish profile and roll as well as any Pasela I've used, 559 or 622. I wonder if yours are some older (or possibly newer) and inferior model? All in all I can't say that they are better than the Paselas (except that my fewer flats with them may possibly be due to better flat resistance) but nor can I say that the versa is true, either. I am debating the GBs in the 28 mm size (who could possibly want wider for pavement? It boggles the mind. Anyway.) but I am not sure that I ought to put more $$ into that already metastasizing beater bike project (tho' it has turned out to be a very nice beater; I just swapped the 18 t cog and 44 t Cyclotourist for a 17/20 Dingle and 42 t mid '80s Stronglight for a 56" gear to complement the 66" gear on those days I am feeling wimpy and cold, load, wind and hills conspire with age to discourage me). [RBW] Re: Rivendell ST Glove update
Thanks for the update Eric. Hope the gloves didn't run out. I ordered a pair of XLs (large hands) and for the first time I can remember the gloves were too big. Just returned them hoping they can be changed for Ls. I have issues with my fingers getting numb in cold (it's all relative, I live in Texas) temperatures. I've yet to find a pair of gloves I'm happy with, but these sound promising. [RBW] Re: Goals for 2010
The details of my life are quite inconsequential but if you insist. Well now, let me begin... ...I would like to obtain a Son 28 Mavic A719 wheel to match my current rear wheel along with the appropriate front and rear light so that I may commute 40 miles RT to work in the dark. At the same time, I would like to avoid exacerbating an injury that has been nagging me for about a year. Stretching and more core training should help me to avoid injury but who really enjoys doing that. In addition, I would like to convert my single speed parts to a new steel frame and look forward to seeing what exactly Grant offers later in the year. Hopefully an affordable, versatile frame that can take a load and nothing too lightweight or I'll have to look elsewhere. Aside from the material goals, I would like to do as others and lose some more fat but doing that has to be fun or forget it. This may mean taking some weekend rides and camping. I would also like to take more photos on rides and socialize with more people when riding although that has been and elusive goal every year that I make it. I usually end up riding alone on group rides and I have become tired of paying $25 to punish myself for 50 miles in exchange for bruised bananas and stale crackers mixed with Gatorade. This year I plan on a more practical approach to my riding and look forward to building my racks for my main ride so that I may carry more things when necessary. Group rides...I don't know that I'll do them anymore. I used up a pair of IRC Tandems that I got slightly used and super cheap. How do these tires compare to the Marathon Supremes? Has anybody compared them? As for to do lists, good for some. I find them constraining. I've no car and flying hurts my ears (maybe the 787 with its higher cabin pressure will make a difference), so the bikes will play a big role in whatever I do. Re: [RBW] Re: Goals for 2010
The old Stronglight headset and Simplex seatpost on my Motobecane, and the Cyclotourist and Stronglight cranks variously distributed among my bikes, are all wonderful parts. I put thousands of miles on plastic Simplex derailleurs almost 40 years ago and, no problems. [RBW] Rivendell ST Glove update
Okay, first off, a quick check of the Riv website shows the gloves are not up there. So not sure what the status is. Took a ride yesterday with the gloves. Temps were about 5F to 8F above with windchill in the -10 to -15F range. Because of the horrible road conditions, did not ride a Riv. But that's a different post for a different list. Anyway, back to the gloves. They work. Now, in temps like that, they didn't keep the fingers toasty warm the entire time. But the hands were in and out of the gloves from time to time to take photos. Discovered the big "fault" of the gloves. When using both hands to hold onto an Olympus Tough camera, the glove fingers usually end up in the photo. So, not an issue for the gloves. Overall, did about two hours outside with the gloves on and had no complaints. Any colder (like today) and would probably go with winter "choppers". But probably could have gone another hour without really complaining about the fingers getting too chilly. Happily, will recommend these gloves to anyone willing to try. Not as fashionable as bike company designed gloves. However, on the road, I find them much, much warmer. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN (who is wishing for a warm up because the roads and trails nearby are basically unridable and/or unsafe for regular bikes) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Goals for 2010
1. Slow the **#$ down! Now that it is cold, I find that I must force myself to go slowly (~15 mph) for the first 10 miles, otherwise I feel miserable and hate riding. To extend this pattern so that riding becomes less of a competition with self. 2. Keep bike miles (75% commuting type riding -- tho' I work at home) at least as high as what I put on either of my cars (have part custody of busy 8-year-old daughter and run all errands for 86 year old mother). The new DN72 on the Motobecane and the soon to come, I hope, SON20R for the Riv commuter should make this easier. 3. Some longer rides, starting, I hope, with another mass communal NM iBob ride here in Albuquerque, once it warms up a bit; perhaps in the mountains. 4. When my new 17/20 Dingle arrives, try riding to The Peak. (46X20X24.5" 571 wheel = 56", Riv gofast). 5. Just maybe, join a northern NM organized tour. -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRW at resumespecialt...@gmail.com (505) 227-0523 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] New Years Day Ride
For me, just a short rt commute to church; feast of the Circumcision in the Orthodox church. Walked my bike into the church and parked it in a classroom. High 20s and breezy when I left; the new Bicycle Fixations merino hoodie over a merino turtleneck and merino vest was perfect. On the way back, stubbornly refused to downshift (by flipping the wheel) from the 75 to the 70, and so ended up standing against a headwind for a good 2 miles of the 3 miles of return climbing and feel it, or my age, this morning. (Or maybe that's the result of mixing a half bottle of nice, cheap Napa Shiraz with an even nicer half bottle of Napa Sauvignon Blanc with dinner.) [RBW] Re: hunquapiller?
Tim, Good try - but think you went off by using source rather than just simple phonetics. Hunquapiller - "hunk 'a piller". aka the Toyo made Rivendell 650B unicycle. Since Grant cannot justify the cost of a full bike from Toyo in this economy, the brain trust went to work and figured out what they could get that would still sell. Took Grant a lot of tries to find just the right lug for the crown. Of course, sizing will be different from other unicycles, with just a "fistfull" of post showing. (All this needs to be approved by the law firm of Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger & McCormick before it is released.) P.S. Oops. Forgot a Hungerdunger - and the most important one, too. [RBW] Re: Goals for 2010
Well, my list will probably hurt Jim (he's my LBS) - 1. No bike purchases. Bought 3 last year. Got rid of same amount. So net gain was zero. But with these, am pretty well set for the long term. 2. Finally (hopefully) drop that last 10 pounds. To make the weight loss an even 150. 3. Make the transition to wearing XL clothing. (see above). Hey, not much for most. But (not so) big for me. 4. More S24Os. Did 3 last year. Would like to do 4 Maybe find a second place to camp. 5. Try a weekend tour. Hard to do with work/music obligations. (BTW, #3 is actually Riv-related. Grant explained to me the extra cost of making XXL clothing and the minimum orders required. Want to give him less of a reason to order those items.) There are others goals out there. [RBW] Re: Goals for 2010
2009 was not a banner year for me. It brought me my second cataract surgery (the first eye was done in 2008), detached retinas in both eyes, then the growth of scar tissue over my left retina that required invasive surgery for removal. The vision in my left eye may never be completely right again. Add in family obligations, a couple of business trips, a week's vacation with my wife, passing a stone on Pearl Harbor Day (OW-OW-OW-OW-OW!) with subsequent UT infection, and a cold and I haven't ridden 200 miles total since October. Plus, my best buddy/riding partner of the last twenty years has just moved out of state. I'll miss my regular rides with him in the coming year. My cycling-related goals for 2010 are: To get back on the road starting tomorrow To start commuting again once weather permits To get back enough fitness to hang with the local cycling club To get fit enough to handle a full century (for the first time in 15+ years!) To join the NorCal Riv/Kogswell riders for a Marin mixed terrain ride To explore the unpaved roads in the Stanislaus river canyon between Columbia and Twain Harte To sell off a couple of bikes that aren't being ridden, and ride the heck out of the ones I keep! Re: [RBW] NYD Ride report. Bombadil goes riding with the big boys!
Curious what your buds thought of the Bombadil. From: jinxed To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Fri, January 1, 2010 6:51:13 PM Subject: [RBW] NYD Ride report. Bombadil goes riding with the big boys! I have a couple buddies that are professional mountain bikers and ride for a team out here. I used to do a bunch of riding with them till I became a fat happy dad. Anyway, they do an annual NYD ride that heads up the road portion of Lookout Mountain in Golden Colorado then down a mountain bike trail on the backside. I got the invite and decided I would (on purpose) subject myself to a world of hurt trying to follow these guys. I got shelled pretty quick on the way up as expected, but we had a blast on the way down snow covered singletrack trails. Everyone there was on very high end full suspension bikes...except me who was on the Bombadil. I hung though!! Here is a picture set: http://tinyurl.com/ylorm9z We did @ 13.5 miles, climbed about 1,716 ft in elevation with a max of 7526 ft. reached at the top. Took about 2 hours. Observations on the bikeit handled pretty well considering the conditions. The top part of the singletrack was pretty loose snow that was knee deep in places and I got through just as well as the full sus bikes. It was sort of funny, everyone kept stopping to fiddle with their shock and tire pressures. I just lowered my seat a little at the top. Once we got lower the trail was a little more packed and easier to ride as long as you stayed on the 12" wide packed snow. Either side your front wheel would sink like a stone. At first I was fighting the front end of the bike a bunch as it kept trying to follow the ruts. Remembering my time before suspension, I leaned back a little to un- weight the front and gave it more gas. That kept the front end floating and much easier to track very similar to riding in sand. The bullmoose bars are great! I was very happy with the width and position off road. Everyone was envious of my platform pedals as all their spd cleats were jammed with ice right off the bat. All of these guys could rocket away from me on a dry trail even at my best, but the conditions of the day kept things pretty equal. We had a great time, and I hope to make it an ongoing event. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. RE: [RBW] Re: NYD Ride report. Bombadil goes riding with the big boys!
FWIW, the 650b Pacenti mtb tires all have the same volume casing--the various widths are attained by making the tread/knobs more or less aggressive. So you should theoretically get the same cush from air volume with the 2.0 QuasiMoto as you would with the 2.3 NeoMoto. Whether you would benefit from the more aggressive knobs of the Neo depends on the surface and terrain you're dealing with. What air pressure were you running? I've not used the Quasi up front but I had one in the back of my Rawland for a while, and I've run the 2.1 and 2.3 Neo on a couple of different bikes. They like to be run at pretty low pressure which should contribute to a smoother ride. I've run the front as low as 23-26 psi without any issues. Bombadil goes riding with the big boys! I am running the max width tire Riv recommends, 2.0. Specifically the Pacenti Quasi-Moto. They did fine, but I had been running 2.3's on my old bike and felt there can be a huge benefit in that depending on conditions. I used to do a bunch of snow riding and loved the continental vertical 2.3's on my Yeti. I think if I had it to do again, knowing what I do now, I would have gone with an Atlantis. Not that I am sour on the Bombadil in any way, but I think the Atlantis may have been better for my intended MTB use. I would have gained a bit of standover clearance and the ability to run a fatter 26" tire. Who knows, maybe the larger 650b rolling diameter does as much "trail smoothing" as a larger volume 26" tire? Not sure if I am nuanced enough to tell, but I have certainly felt the difference from 2.0 vs. 2.3 on a 26" wheel. One thing I was a little on the fence about was the bar, but it is a keeper for sure! I was debating on a moustache set up, but wanted to get this on a good trail first. It's right on for me. Re: [RBW] New Years Day Ride
Also took a ride to welcome MMX. Took the Riv Road with a buddy who was on an LHT. No mountains here in central AL, but beacoups rollers and lovely rural vistas. It was a cool and damp 47F but felt colder in a 15 mph wind with the humidity. Not quite 50 miles but a great way to start the year. Triple layering (inner 2 of wool) kept me tolerably comfortable even when wet with sweat. Tailwinds! Steve, I had considered riding the GAP and the C&O. Why do you save GAP is safer? Thanks for the great photos! Right now it's anti-inflammatory, stretching, dropping saddle and kicking the heel in on SPD per Dr. Other advice has been to go wider Q with cranks, and orthotic inserts. Will see how the first four work out as they are all free!!! FWIW I don't have problems on hilly rides, but spinning on the flats. Prob. developed when riding fixed gear/no foot retention, but now manifests with any combo of gears or footwear if there are enough miles involved. -- Cheers, David Redlands, CA "Bicycling is a big part of the future.
