[RBW] Rivendell Gym!
Had a free Saturday, so Duy and me rode to Rivendell to grab some things for our upcoming S240 trip to Mt.Diablo. It's ironic that the only bike shop I go to is a shop where I don't buy bike stuff and I always find myself talking to the staff about non-bike related things. For instance Grant and I got into a conversation that started with wrestling, then went on to fitness, then it ending up with Grant showing me the Rivendell Gym(Complete with rowing machine and dip station) and also some cool variations of pull-ups using tree branches and rope. [RBW] Re: Boeshield just once?
After reading several bicycle forums, considering the many alternatives, I've settled on Frame Saver. I know that GP and other bike shops use Boeshield, but I'm convinced it is because Frame Saver is a mess to apply and clean up compared to Boeshield -- as I discovered yesterday. I think Frame Saver provides longer-lasting protection. I've seen posts from people who've ridden five or more years in rainy climates on a single application without any problems with rust. Boeshield does not appear to have those bona fides, and I wouldn't be comfortable using it without at least an annual application. I also noted several alternatives mentioned to Boeshield, such as AMSoil, boiled linseed oil, and such, but these were offered primarily because of the cost or availability of Frame Saver. I didn't try them, as Frame Saver was available to me and I didn't consider the cost savings worth it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I completely agree that the one without eyelets is particularly suave. But my understanding is that the final product will have eyelets, though I don't really see the point, because in order to squirt a fender in there you can't ride anything larger than a 23. Here are my still-evolving thoughts if you care to build on any of them: 1) Gomez:http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/yves-gomez/50-704 I like: the ability to run fat tires; 1 stem; legendary Riv fit and comfort; paint job/color; priced quite reasonably (or better). I dislike: $500 more than Gomez; need to wait two-three months for the frame. 3) Buena Vista by Soma:http://www.somafab.com/bvista.html I like: classic double-top tube design; lots of smart design details; did I mention double-top tubes? In your reading did you discover if applying framesaver to a frame that has already been boeshielded is a bad idea? No, I never saw that mentioned. As I understand it, Boeshield dries to a wax, so it probably shouldn't be a problem (I'm no chemist, to say the least). I would imagine the solvent in Frame Saver would dissolve Boeshield's wax, adding it to the mix, so you might just be adding a little more protection. If you read my post from last night, you'll know that Erin, my wife, is trading in her Quickbeam for a Betty Foy; since there doesn't seem to be any for sale yet (that I've noticed, anyway), does anyone have an idea what a reasonable price would be? They don't come with pedals or a saddle, but we'll be selling the bike with the British Racing Green B-17 and SKS Touring pedals. We'll be keeping the racks and the Large Baggins, and lock holder is no longer there. Here's a picture when pretty new: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58462...@n00/3691429006/in/set-72157620865517581/ I've already heard from a couple of people, and I'm hoping we can complete the sale by the first week in April we're really excited about the Betty! A frameset just went for $700-something on ebay. You should consider parting it out. I am virtually certain you will get more $$ if you do that. [RBW] Re: 52cm Silver Quickbeam For Sale...
Hi, William, and thanks! I'm not into parting a bike out; we live in a small apartment and I don't have the room to keep things that don't sell quickly. With the pedals and saddle--and tax--the bike sold for approximately $1800; hopefully, we can sell it for $1300... sound reasonable? Here are my still-evolving thoughts if you care to build on any of them: 1) Gomez:http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/yves-gomez/50-704 I like: the ability to run fat tires; 1 stem; legendary Riv fit and comfort; paint job/color; priced quite reasonably (or better). I dislike: the too stretched geo; the little kick up that the line of the top tube/chain stay makes at the seat tube; ABHOR the goofy name and accompanying decals. 2) Ebisu:http://www.jitensha.com/eng/aboutframes_e.html also here -http://www.jitensha.com/eng/ebisumixte_e.html I like: more compressed geo and 700c wheels; clean lines of the design; mounting position of rear brake. I dislike: $500 more than Gomez; need to wait two-three months for the frame. 3) Buena Vista by Soma:http://www.somafab.com/bvista.html I like: classic double-top tube design; lots of smart design details; did I mention double-top tubes? [RBW] another downside to carbon fiber bikes?
A friend of mine was in a long distance training ride last Saturday and hit a pothole and crashed. She broke a few ribs and a clavicle. I wasn't there so I can only go by what has been relayed to me. She was riding a Specialized womens specific design carbon fiber bike at the time. I know her to be a good rider so I found the incident to be a bit unnerving. I had two incidents about 3 years ago when I owned a race oriented carbon fiber Kestrel Evoke. This was a fast riding bike. One time while descending on the Calaverous wall I braked because I forgot whether I should make a left turn or right and subsequently flipped over. Another incident was when I hit a road divider in the Saratoga maze at dusk and flipped over. I recall thinking in both incidents, I shouldn't have flipped! Granted there was rider error in both of my flips. However, I felt the compact frame combined with the stiffness of the frame compounded the dynamics and propensity to flip. I am riding steel and titanium bikes now with long wheel bases and feel more secure. My friends accident made me wonder, would she have lost control had she been riding a non carbon fiber bike? Have there been any studies on this? I don't think its just my imagination that carbon fiber bikes have a greater propensity for losing control than non carbon fiber bikes. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Cheers, Chris -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hill complete, for now.
Oh, Will! You touch on a subject that is dear to my heart. I tilted the ends of the hooks downward slightly, more or less parallel to the top tube, against my immemorial custom (all my other bikes for the past 15 years, with drops, mtb bars with bar ends, At4s, M-bars, flipped tourist bars, what have you, have had the ends strictly, literally, fundamentalism-ally, flat-earth-ly parallel to the fundament or ground. Velo Cult is the only shop I frequent down here in the San Diego region. They are great guys, very eclectic and fun, and true cycling advocates and enthusiasts. Owner Sky Boyer (how's that for a cool cycling name?) loaned me a part from one of his personal Chris King headsets to help me get my Rivendell Roadeo on the road recently; that's the kind of guy he is and the kind of shop they are. He's an accomplished mountain bike and cyclocross racer, too, and wise beyond his age, as he's pretty darn young to have such a great shop and such a broad view of cycling. (You wouldn't believe their warehouse - seriously, they could charge for tours. Their shop's retail floor is totally fascinating with the most amazing collection of interesting bikes for sale. That selection is just 1/10th as amazing as what's in their warehouse. It's like Velo Cult is a magnet or vortex for funky, one-of-a-kind, and impossible to find classic bikes of a very wide variety, even mountain bike tandems from the early 80s, just to name one niche they are also into.) They also founded and moderate http://www.sdbikecommuter.com, which covers all types of cycling, not just commuting. They also were the main proponents of the recent San Diego Tweed Ride. They have a very image-heavy blog and are developing an online museum on it and their website: http://www.velocult.com/ Sky and employee / photographer Anthony even came over to our house a while back to photograph most of my bikes, frames, and some of the more interesting and/or odd-ball parts for the museum. [RBW] Re: Nice little write up on Velo Cult
Thank you Chris. Sounds like my kind of place. I have an increasingly huge horde of vintage, mostly French and Italian parts from the '40s through the early '80s. Beginning to think I ought to donate the parts to an operation like this, both to share with interested observers and also to better ensure the parts don't get thrown away. Believe it or not, one day on tour last fall - during the quiet somewhat boring part of the ride where the road conditions are not challenging and the scenerey boring - I spent about an hour worrying what if I were to be run over on this tour. My heirs have no idea how rare some of my parts are. They may wind up selling them at a huge discounts to people who would use the parts on throw away bikes. Having a destination museum run by people who at once care and know what they are doing is a real nice thing for like minded collectors. I don't know about that. Consider running over a pothole, -not a pleasant experience no matter what you are riding. [RBW] Feedback on Large Shopsack? Anyone using it?
I wonder if anyone can give any feedback on the Large Shopsack and the large (gigantic) basket. What you use it for, what you carry, etc. I got the Medium one with the medium basket and find the combination quite handy (to my surprise) as I was sure I would never ever ever get a basket. Remember last year I had the carbon roadie mindset before I discovered RBW. I'm thinking of getting the larger basket, as the medium one is too small to get takeover and things like that, that I no longer want to use the car for. I feel inclined to also get the matching Shopsack, but wonder if it's not going to be too big for practical purposes. I welcome your feedback, comments and advise! [RBW] Re: another downside to carbon fiber bikes?
Doubt that material has much to do with severity of injury / crash propensity. Too many other variables. Recently I saw a guy pulled over, sitting next to his bike. I stopped to see if he needed help. Problem was his carbon stem had snapped. The bike was un-ridable but he hadn't crashed wasn't hurt. I can't imagine how he maintained control to stop. The other side of he coin is an incident years ago (in the age before carbon). A friend dis-located a shoulder misc related damage when the aluminum handlebars on his steel framed bike broke off cleanly at the stem. He was just standing up on a modest climb, no severe jolt, pothole or other input. Go figure. dougP On Mar 22, 6:12 pm, Brad Gantt brdg...@gmail.com wrote: I think the sensations you describe are subjective so it doesn't make too much sense to argue there. [RBW] Bombadil in commuter configuration
Hi all, Here are some updated pictures of my Bombadil in its current incarnation. After all the great feedback regarding my post on hand pain, I finally removed my Moustache bars (will be up for sale shortly) and got a set of 48cm Noodle bars, the same I have on my AHH. I'm using the shorter Nitto Dirt Drop stem and have fine tuned the position of the handlebars so my hands are comfortable and I can ride basically with no pain. I also installed a set of interrupter brakes to give them a try. Still undecided, as I find they require a lot of pressure to stop the bike, significantly more than the regular brake levers. Haven't tried them on the dirt yet. I also put a grey Sackville Saddlebag (medium) and after using it for a bit with no rear rack, decided to add the rack and use a couple of zip ties. It didn't swing and felt great without the rack (I carry my laptop and raincoat and other stuff) but it was resting on top of the fender and rubbing it (wearing down the shine) so I decided to be on the safe side and put a Nitto R14 rack. I bent the stays so it would come as close to the seat stays as possible while being as low as possible, but it still pushes the saddlebag back some. It doesn't rub on my legs now, but that didn't bother me at all before; I actually liked it. Shortly after that, I realized that if I wanted to use the bike in a more utilitarian way, I needed a basket. You can't believe how many personal mental blocks I had to break through. I don't know why, I had always refused to consider a basket on my bikes. Not that they were able to take them, but it was much more than that. Even after getting my AHH and then my Bombadil, I still couldn't come to grips with the idea of attaching a basket. Then I realized that I couldn't even go get coffee for my wife on Sundays without having to drive the few blocks to Starbucks. That did it! I placed an order for the medium basket and the medium Shopsack figuring I'd end up returning them quite promptly, but I loved it instantly! All of a sudden I could get stuff on the bike that didn't fit (or could leak) into a regular bag. Then I went to Baja Fresh for takeout for the whole family and realized that the medium basket wasn't large enough. I'm now considering the large basket and have posted another post for feedback on the large Shopbag. In January I got the 29x2.0 Marathon Supreme tires and the Berthoud steel fenders (50mm) to ride when it was raining or wet. I love how they look. I considered the plastic black ones, and even ordered them, but the steel ones won me over. I ended up using some parts from the black set, so if anyone wants replacement fenders without the parts, let me know. They are the Planet Bike 29er Cascadia fenders. The ride of the wide tires is wonderful. Other details are the Brooks B17 British Green saddle and I'm now starting to experiment with cloth bar tape. I ordered the new green tape that they are selling but messed up my initial installation. I used a bit to cover the kickstand and learn how to twine it, and am getting ready to give it another try. Since it doesn't stretch it's been a bit of a learning experience for me. I also ordered Shellack flakes to start experimenting with them as well. Otherwise, I may fall back to the Deda green tape or the Brooks British Green leather tape. I have the Brooks leather tape on the AHH and I like it, although it's a bit slippery. We'll see how the Shellack experiments turn out in the next few weeks. I've been traveling a lot for business so I haven't had much time to ride or do anything much; now I have 3 weeks at home. I have to confess that I haven't ridden the AHH since I got the Bombadil; not because I don't like it anymore, in fact I like it much better now since it feels so lively. It's just that I know the Bombadil can carry my heft and my stuff with no issues, and am letting the AHH rest a bit while I work on losing some of my portly heft! You can see the latest incarnation of my Bombadil here: http://tinyurl.com/ykqv8lx. They are the last 3 pictures in my set. i have to comment on this. my rivendell( 59cm roadeo) has a very short distance from the bb to the front axle, actually shorter than many mcrb's. as a result, i suffer from tco. i don't care. the ride and handling are superb. designing a bike that handles just right is an art( and there are tradeoffs). don c. Wow, the paranoia is spreading like wild fire. I agree with Tim, there are many other factors to look at besides frame material. For example, what size tires and psi is your friend riding? If she is riding 700x18 or 20 tires pumped up to 150psi and then hits that pothole, its going to do more for her to lose control than the carbon fiber frame. In contrast, I was riding my carbon Calfee with kestrel carbon fork (bought frameset USED 13 years ago) on Saturday and a car cut in front of me, without signaling, causing me to slam on my brakes. I was able to slow down just enough that my front tire touched the rear bump as the person was turning right. I went down scraping my knee. When I looked up the driver was still going along slowly, totally oblivious to what had happened. My bike was fine. On Sunday, I went out again and rode up Old La Honda road. On the descent down, I took it easy hitting only about 35mph with no problem and total control of my bike. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Feedback on Large Shopsack? Anyone using it?
On Mar 22, 6:17 pm, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote: I wonder if anyone can give any feedback on the Large Shopsack and the large (gigantic) basket. I haven't tried the shopsack so I can't speak to that. But I can say that you should install as large a front basket as you and your bike can handle. I tend to be a rear-load rider myself, having been raised on a fairly steady diet of British-geometrie'd bikes. However, I DID use a Really Huge Basket on the one front-loader (a frame with appropriate fork trail for front-loading) I built up several years ago. The Wald Model # 157 (also known around here as the Humungous Hardcore Messenger Basket) regularly held my Dee-Dog sized Timbuk2 messenger bag with plenty of room to spare. Largest load ever was that bag filled with library books, nestled in alongside a short case of beer and three gallon jugs of milk (I was dropping off library books and doing a grocery run for a barbecue). It came to something like 45 pounds of stuff all neatly bungee'd in place because it was really overflowing on top; and while it was slow, shaky going for me, the basket handled it with aplomb. So if you don't mind heavy loads up front, the Wald basket can totally handle it. Beth -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Sam Hill complete, for now.
Patrick Do you know the name of the Sally Hansen Green nail polish? is it a pretty good match? Thanks and the bike looks perfect.. jason... Stand, computer; still need to touch up a couple of places where paint was gouged; have Sally Hansen Green to do so. [RBW] 59cm All Rounder for trade
Selling my 59cm Rivendell All Rounder. Its was made by Joe Starck and painted by Joe Bell in 2000. It has Joe Bells signature on the bottom of the bottom bracket and JB decal on the chainstay. The serial number is JS0004. Its a absolutely beautiful bike. The bike is kinda between a X0-1 and an Atlantis, it has 26 inch wheels. This was a custom order made back in 2000 when Rivendell had only 3 custom made frame options, the Road, Long Low and the All Rounder. I think the production Atlantis came out about when this was made. In 2000 this frame cost around $1900. It is nicer than the current production Rivendells with fancy st james lugs and it was handbuilt and painted by masters. I am not the original owner but it is in really nice condition, I would put it between very good and excellent. Here is the parts list: -Paul Neo Retro Silver Brakes front and back -Paul thumbies in silver -Shimano Barend 8 spd shifters on the thumbies -Nitto JItensha City Bars with new cork grips -Nitto Crystal Fellow Seatpost -NItto Dirtdrop 26.0 -Sugino XD triple -XT rear derailleur -tektro silver brake levers -Nice tall Stronglight headset -Lx wheels with CR18 rims -Schwalbe marathon -11-28 8-spd cassette installed and will include an extra brand new shimano 11-32 I love the bike but its not the right fit for me and a little redundant with my Atlantis. The seat and pedals are not included, nor are the nitto bottle cages in some of the pics. Just had it tuned up. Im in the San Francisco Bay area and would really like to do a trade for a bike for the myself or the Misses. Maybe a 58cm Atlantis, a 59cm Hilsen or a Rambouillet. Also looking for a nice Randonneur type bike maybe even a JItensha Ebisu. If no trades come up I will put it on ebay.
