[RBW] 650B dead or alive?
The discussion about the new Pacenti 650B tires momentarily ventured into commentary on "the future of 650B". I thought this was worth a discussion of its own. Two or three years ago we had 650B bikes at Hiawatha Cyclery from at least three manufacturers: Rivendell, Kogswell, and Rawland. Now Rivendell does 650B only on smaller sizes of certain models, Kogswell seems to be on an indefinite hiatus, and Rawland's new models have been displayed at various venues with 622 and 559 wheels (with disc brakes, 650B will still be an option). To the extent that 650B has gone mainstream, it is by and large in the 27.5" wheel size for mountain bikes. It seems like new disc-specific rim and fat-knobby tire options are proliferating, but the 650B rim and tire options for road bikes have not expanded much, if at all, since I first read about 650B in the Rivendell Reader. There are some small importers/manufacturers like Jan Heine with the Gran Bois and now Pacenti with his Pari-Moto, but they have yet to get their tires into the QBP catalog or on any Treks. I was pleasantly surprised to see another of my mainstream distributors pick up some 650B stuff, but again, it was mostly of the MTB variety. I'm not sure Rivendell and a few custom framebuilders can sell enough 650B bikes to support much expansion, or even maintain current levels of the 650B rim/tire selection and availability. Unless the 650B size gets picked up by Trek or some other major player, I think its future will be at best as a niche item with limited selection and spotty availability. I'd encourage 650B bike owners and aficionados to stockpile an extra set of rims and a couple sets of favorite tires, just in case. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders
Lisa, Aside from Ray being right as usual about his explanations, I think you made an excellent choice by going with the Nitto Big Front Rack. If you have to use P-clamps, then I'd say that just for looks and versatility, this one is the winner hands down. My Bombadil has all the braze-ons, it just seems that the Nitto Front Rack wasn't designed either with these brakes in mind, or with the braze-on position or something else I haven't quite figured out yet. For me the choice really comes down to trying to fit the Nitto rack with the P-clamps and leaving it permanently on so I can use a basket/Sackville combo but not my Acorn Rando Bag or going with the Nova as an add-on to the Nitto Mini Front Rack that allows me to both use the basket or the Rando Bag without any hassle. So far, despite how much I like the Nitto Big Front rack, I'm starting to lean more towards the Nova/Nitto Mini combo as the more versatile option. [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?
My hat went in late to this ring as well, and I'm looking forward to seeing the tan sidewall 38s on my Hilsen. I have great hope they'll fit well under the fenders, where Hetres just wouldn't. Last summer, when I built the bike, I was riding the 32mm Cypres and was happy. As weather and ground conditions faltered (Chicago), I got CdlV and measured 36mm. I really liked the ride, running about 50psi give or take a few puffs, over all sorts of fun stuff (snow, mud, weird Prairie Path mud (limestone), who knows what else). Now with the impending bloom of these ~38mm tires, I can hardly wait, but I'm fine waiting. More than anything I'm very glad Mr Pacenti took the initiative to spearhead this, and I'm so very grateful to all who participated. Ha, Patrick, you're right about freewheels. Those shots were taken on the bike's maiden voyage. And since I'd never ridden fixed before, it was on the freewheel side of the wheel for the first few rides. These days, the 'beam is running fixed about 80% of the time and I'm loving it! I'm looking to sell the stock wheels that came with my Quickbeam last May. They were ridden maybe 20 miles before I switched on my custom wheels. The rear wheel has an 18t Shimano freewheel installed on it, and the threading on the 120mm rear hub is free/free. I'm asking for $150 plus 25 s/h. I can provide pictures by request. [RBW] Re: Annoying Noise from Cranks/BB
I could add one more step, likely of no pertinence here, except that the back-story is entertaining. One day I was at the shop early, and this college hipster kid comes in with some dumpster-find Peugeot converted to fixed gear. He had some kind of fancy track crank and BB for it. Of course, the BB was not appropriate for a French bike, but I just happened to have a Phil BB and French rings. Off with the old cranks, and I install the Phil BB and new crank. He rides around the block, and comes back reporting a click/creak noise. I tighten the chainring and crank bolts, I try different pedals, I remove and reinstall everything, etc, etc. Nothing stops the creak. So I'm out of ideas, and my mechanic Mongo walks in. Mongo is no fan of French anything, especially French bikes. I describe the problem and he casts a dirty look at the bike and says "oil the lugs." A little Tri-flow around the edges of the BB lug, and, miracle of miracles, the creaky old Peugeot doesn't creak anymore! Re: [RBW] Re: Sizing on a A Homer Hilsen
Tucker, A Dirt Drop stem is pretty tall (altitude) and pretty short (extension). M-bars want a stem 2-3cm shorter than the same bike with drop bars. If the bigger frame most likely requires a short stem for you, you might find it hard to get m-bars close enough. Me personally, I would never buy a frame that would require a stem shorter than 8-9cm extension with drop bars. There are several tall Nitto stems, Technomic Deluxe, Technomic, Dirt Drop. I can't imagine that you wouldn't be able to get the bars high enough using one of them. RBW designs fit small, due to the low BB, but if you are on a bike that is the right size (a lot of folks come to RBW having been riding bikes several sizes too small), I think your RBW fit is going to be good on a bike that size or maybe 1 size up. [RBW] Re: Annoying Noise from Cranks/BB
On May 11, 2010, at 10:40 AM, GeorgeS wrote: I have been experiencing an annoying clicking from the cranks/BB which cannot be heard when the bike is on the stand but which immediately starts when I am actually peddling. I changed out the pedals and the clicking remained. Then I changed the crank set and the clicking stopped and has not returned and I've put more than 100 miles on the bike with the new cranks. There's not much to go wrong on cranks. The bolts attaching the rings to the spider are tight. The cranks with the problem is a Sugino triple I bought new from RBW. The BB is a Tange also purchased new from RBW. The cranks were tight on the spindle. Any suggestions on what is going on here? Something has to be moving. Is it possible the square hole for the spindle is not square? This is sometimes the BB cups moving in the threads of the frame, the predominant BB designs really not being very good. It only takes 1/1000 of an inch movement to make noise- you'd not be able to see or feel the play involved. Sometimes it's the crank moving on the BB. Proper square taper installation procedures seem to be not particularly well known, for some reason. The Park Tool web instructions, for example, are not correct (and, being the Park Tool web site, they are given the relative weight of the Gospels). Not greasing the taper is a contributor to the problem because the lack of lubrication interferes with getting the crank properly seated and tight. Any metal-to-metal interface where torquing down a bolt is involved requires lubrication to reliably get the right torque. I lightly seat the crank on the spindle with a rubber mallet before using the retaining bolt to finish the job, although that is probably not necessary. A torque wrench is helpful, the proper torque being higher than many people expect (and lower than the hamfisted expect. Ahem. Don't ask how I know this...). One can readily learn to apply the proper torque with a standard crank bolt wrench or socket set, as long as you have a comparison. The retaining bolt will appear to loosen slightly with riding because the crank "walks" up the taper a little bit as you ride; this is normal and repeatedly tightening down the bolt can eventually split the crank. Just snug it down if necessary. You swapped the pedals and the noise remained, so you nicely eliminated the pedals as the cause. You checked the chainring bolt tightness, so you eliminated those as the source too. If swapping the crank (and not doing anything with the BB) eliminated the noise, then the problem was almost certainly the crank moving slightly on the BB axle. The odds are that the retaining bolt wasn't tight enough and that your installation of the new cranks solved this. As for whether the square hole can be out of square, it's unlikely but not impossible. The hole can be deformed by riding the crank "loose- ish" and become difficult to properly seat, but the 1/1000 of an inch movement that was probably happening would be unlikely to do this. And Sugino makes most of the Japanese cranks sold in the world (their own brands, plus at least 1/2 of Sun Tour's cranks in its heyday and many Shimano cranks) so they do know what they are doing. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: gripkings
Hi all: After a year of riding in rain and snow, I wanted to lube the pedals. Rather than fight with the dust cap on the grip king, I drilled a very tiny (1/16"?) hole in one of the four indents in the cap, and then stuck my grease gun in it. I pushed clean grease through the pedal and wiped off the dirty grease that came out on the spindle side. It worked very well. I got the idea from an interview with Charlie Cunningham (sp?...forgive me if I spell his name wrong) which shows a port he built into a hub through which grease can be inserted with a grease gun. One thing that I have noticed is that a shoe with a bit of tread on it (like Rockports or boots) will grip better when the pedal is wet than do the Sambas. I normally wear a boot when I ride in the rain and Sambas on sunny days, so it works out well. They are nice pedals. Lisa --- that isn't a concern because the rack is rigid and can't collapse onto itself. The only thong the p- clamp does is prevent the rack from falling forward or rearward. The Tubus lowrider racks all have a pivot where the horizontal bar that holds your panniers attaches to the arc that goes over the front of the wheel. So it seems to me that, if the other end of the pannier bar is only clamped to the fork, the clamp may tend to slide down toward the axle. I'm not the only one worried about this, see for instance this image: http://images.erck.org/Site/Gear_AtlantisRack307X230.jpg Lisa On May 11, 5:33 pm, Rene Sterental wrote: > I found this > photo...http://www.flickr.com/photos/22253...@n00/3868497649/in/set-721576224... > > Seems like the perfect solution! > > René > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "RBW Owners Bunch" group. > To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > rbw-owners-bunch+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group > athttp://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch?hl=en. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. There's been some shifting of the process behind the google curtain, but you can change/manage settings by logging into google, then going to your groups and looking for the link "Manage My Memberships". That should let you set it up so that you receive emails. But, if you are receiving emails from everyone else, that may not be the issue. It might be a setting in your email program. I haven't found a setting to not see your own posts (I recall that is in iBob list software). [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?
I realize that I had a small part in financing the pari-moto project by preordering, and I'm happy to support Kirk. That's why I pre- ordered my pair. It's just kind of a burn that I can buy a pair today from VO, and actually pay 50 cents less for shipping, and probably get them sooner. I'll certainly get over it. I'm super excited about the tires. Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders
I hadn't "discovered" the Nova... it would be a great solution. Ray is using the P-clamps to be able to use the Big Front Rack below the Neo-Retro brakes, and using the highest lower tab hole on the rack so it fits under the brakes. Not as clean looking, but certainly a viable option if it is to stay permanently on the bike. I'd still like to see the Nova mounted on a Riv frame, but it's looking more and more like the way for me to go. On the Big Front Rack I cannot mount my Acorn Rando bag, I also discovered. Baskets would not likely be a problem, but the bag would. Is there any significant carrying capacity between the Nova and the Nitto Big Front Rack? The Nova is rated to 30 pounds... If the pair I purchased last July (the pre-order thing) will ever show up, they'll go on my Riv Road 650B conversion and I'll tell you how they ride. Put a pair on a 1980s red Pinarello for club rides. I took a little cordial ribbing again about "riding in the Larry zone." Probably the red Converse high-tops were to blame. (Meanwhile, other's boutique wheels are clicking and popping spokes & one CF frame was proclaimed unridable because sand thrown up from the tires abraded the frame.) I am planning on getting another pair of GKs for my Riv. I went from platforms, to clips & straps, to Look, to double sided SPD, to clips & straps, to platform. Am very glad to be back. [RBW] WTB: 59cm Bleriot (was "Re: Maybe WTB: 59 Bleriot?")
(I just had to edit that subject line...) Thanks everyone for feeding the beast! Velo love is so easy yet so hard to sate sometimes. My intention with a daily Bleriot will be to equip it with a dynohub front wheel, which would *probably* be the latest Shimano, just to save a few $$. Perhaps I'll finally plunk down on the SON20 edelux and build myself a new front wheel for my AHH and "hand me down" to the Bleriot the SON28 that's there. What fun - I'm totally into self- powered lights. I'll probably go with Berthoud steel fenders for the durability, and the Tubus rear from my LHT. l was fine with SKS on my LHT until they self-destructed after only 18 months, and took a cool sticker collection with them. This doesn't seem like a very light bike at all, so I guess I'm hoping the tubing is ... eh, whatever... it's all about the ride! You know, I've been assuming 59cm is the right size for me, given a PBH of 85.25 and the fact that I've got 58s in LHT, Quickbeam, AHH, and a 59 Roadeo (and several 58s in other bikes elsewhere). Roadeo cross - that would be fun to see! I never did put a second bottle cage on that frame, maybe I could develop a special hand-up holder, especially for the cupcakes! [RBW] Re: Sizing on a A Homer Hilsen
I have a PBH of 89 and ride a 63cm AHH. I was given the exact same option from Rivendell - either 61 or 63 would work. However, Rich advised me that with handlebars set up the same way (shorter stem on the 63), the 63 would handle better. I'm very happy with the 63. I have a small handful of seatpost showing - 3" or so, and with the stem sticking 2" out of the headset, both are level. The top of the seat and the crook of the stem are both about 6" above the top tube and the bike looks perfectly proportioned. I think if I raise the stem up to the max, it ends up about 2" above the top of the saddle. I ride 40c Schwalbe Marathons and ride the bike mostly for commuting. Keep in mind that when you stop and put a foot down at lights, etc. you have even more standover height because one foot is up on the pedal. Re: [RBW] Re: gripkings
I'm sure you'll love them...I have 3 sets of them (2 in use, 1 spare for the next bike). The only issue I've had is an initial lack of lubrication with MKS pedals. I started with the Touring Pedals which worked great until my first longer ride when one pedal developed a clicking which I couldn't initially pinpoint. For a while I thought I was going to have to replace my BB; it was just the pedal. I repacked them and didn't have any trouble...until I switched to the GKs. As soon as I put them on the click was back so I immediately repacked them. When I ordered another set for another bike I didn't even bother trying them and repacked them from the get go. it's easy enough to do. I originally found this link: http://stankertanker.blogspot.com/2008/12/mks-touring-pedal-dismay-and-rebuild.html That article is about the touring pedals which have 11 ball bearings per pedal. The Grip Kings, at least my 3 pair, have 12. Aloha! Bob Aloha! Bob On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 8:09 AM, sean wrote: > Thanks for the imput Grant and others. I bit the bullet and ordered > some. Re: [RBW] Re: gripkings
I used a little sharp hook-shaped pick tool I got at Harbor Freight, which allowed me gently insert the pointy tip between plug and pedal body, and to pull on a lip on the plug, which sits more-or-less flush with the pedal body. The grey plug on the outboard side of the pedal is a press fit, with some little ridges to seal and hold it in, like some stoppers for carbonated beverages you might find in a kitchen gadget store. Easy out and pop back in. On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 10:55 AM, Bill Connell wrote: > How did you get the plastic dust cap out? Thanks for the imput Grant and others. I bit the bullet and ordered some. The "plank" statement wasn't so much about having alot of support under my feet as it was abotu being concerned the "meaty" parts of my feet would be positioned in the wrong place on long pedals. Seems that these pedals will work well for my foot size and, beyond that, it is all personal preference. Hoping to love them and not look back. Thanks. Thanks for all the input everyone. Very helpful and dispelled some of my concerns. I went ahead and ordered some. I am hoping the width to length ratio will work well for me. I still ride "clicked in" on my Rambouillet (for long distance riding), but love "pedaling free" for commuting and general riding/errands/grocery hauling, etc. Agree with Mike, it really is very liberating. I still think clipless pedals have their place though depending on the type of riding. I guess maybe my "type of riding" is changing more and more over time. Thanks again all. Re: [RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings
Personally I am huge fan of the GK. I like the fact that they do not grip as much as studded pedals do. It allows me to make subtle shifts of my feet without having to "lift" them up. Something that is tough to do with gnarly spikes. They definitely grip enough for me. I ride them in rain and shine and never felt like I wanted more grip. I have tried studded pedals in the past but prefer the Gripkings more subtle grip. In terms of comfort I rate them very high. I completed a 300k brevet on them without any foot discomfort at all. I wore some rather thin soled shoes as well. I wear a size 12 shoe in normal to wide widths depending on model. The key thing to maximize the pedals width is to wear shoes without a "bumper" zone around the shoe - meaning a shoe where the sole's footprint is no wider than the upper. I like the width on the GK and find it more then enough - It works well when riding the bicycle in fixed mode as well. Hope this helps. [RBW] Re: Hilborne in Outside Magazine
I understand that the point of "utility" is to distinguish them from "recreational" or "racing" or whatever. I also understand the writer's interest in not wanting to complicate things with a litany of verbiage. That said, "utility" means something different to me, and fairly to most of the bike geeks I consort with. Utility bikes are work bikes, cargo bikes, bikes that are not recreational (but are still fun to ride) but rather are built to be utilitarian: bakfiets, Xtracycles, the Yuba Mundo. Those are utility bikes. I can carry a load of groceries or a case of beer on my Hillborne, but mostly it's for the pure joy of riding (being useful is part of that, for me anyway) whether I'm commuting, noodling around town, or clocking big miles and dreaming of my first brevet. All-rounder works, but something else might, too. I just think "utility" is too loaded (har, har) a term. Really enjoyed the article, though! [RBW] Re: Annoying Noise from Cranks/BB
In my experience, usually a BB/crank clicking sound is due to one of the many interfaces between a steel and aluminum surfaces down there. Here is what I do when my BB/crank starts to make a clicking sound, based on likelihood of source: 1) Make sure crank bolts are tight 2) Make sure chainring/spider bolts are tight 3) Make sure pedals are tight in the cranks If that doesn't do it, then: 2) Take out the BB, put lots of grease on the BB threads and cup threads, and interface between outer bearing race and BB cups. Re- install BB cups, and torque down nice and snug If that doesn't do it, then: 4) Take off drive-side crank and disassemble the rings. Grease interfaces between steel bolts and aluminum surfaces. Re-assemble and make sure every bolt is tight. 5) Make sure crank-bolt threads are greased 6) Make sure pedal axle threads/pedal boss threads are greased If that doesn't work, the bearings of the BB may need to be re- packed. You don't want to put grease on the spindle taper- although that is a debated issue among some folks, most manufacturers recommend against it, so I tend to follow that. Just make sure the crank bolts are tight, and the creak won't be from the spindle taper/crank arm interface. Anyway, good luck finding the solution. It can drive you nuts trying to stop a creak sometimes, but just be patient and you'll fix it! I use GK pedals with Keen Coronado Cruiser shoes and love the combination. I wear size 10.5 on the Coronados. Sometimes the rubber front/tip of the shoe rubs the crank arm if I pull the feet in too much, but they grip wonderfully (almost like 5/10 shoes) and are very comfortable. Haven't tried them on a longer ride yet, been using the 5/10 Activator 2 but my feet hurt after a while on those. The 5/10 also fit very well on the GKs. Haven't tried any other pedals, but now cannot go back to SPDs. I tried once and was astonished at how constricted I felt by being unable to move my foot around. [RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings
I tried the Grip Kings and, to my dismay, the proportions and axle location didn't work for me. I have a short wide foot, women's size 6, and wear very soft shoes when I ride (chuck taylors, soft-soled moccasins). The GP's were long for my foot but I think I could've gotten over that; it was more that the axle doesn't extend to the cage (port/starboard, not bow/stern so to speak) and created a lump toward the center of the pedal right under the ball of my foot. (This also happens with the new EZ quick-release MKS pedals.) I've wound up staying with the MKS touring pedals and found a home for the GK's. I'd recommend seeing if you can borrow a pair and try 'em out wearing your softest regular riding shoe before you make the purchase. Has anyone tried the VO City or Touring pedals? liesl minneapolis On May 11, 9:39 am, bwgride wrote: > I have the grip king. [RBW] Re: Sizing on a A Homer Hilsen
stocking feet pbh is 89, with sneakers on it moves up to 92.5. I have big feet (size 13). The bike will mostly be ridden as a commuter in NYC. If the actual standover with 35mm tires is 87 or so, that would give me 5.5 cm standover, over two inches. If it follows that the 61 would have 85 standover on 35 mm tires, that would give me three inches of standover, which seems like alot, for even a country bike. On a 63 my saddle will be approximately 15.5 cm above the top tube, that seems like i will get the requisite fistfull of post. Maybe im wrong, Im just afraid on the 61 i will have trouble getting the handle bars a couple cm above the saddle. thanks for all the input. Plus the Grip King name is a misnomer: they don't grip that well. Call me old fashioned, but I don't think I should have to buy spikes and install them into a $54 pedal to get good grip, especially if said pedal is called the King of Grip. [RBW] Re: Maybe WTB: 59 Bleriot?
I snagged one of the Riv demos as they were clearing off the floor, and have zero regrets. I do occasionally carry some loads that are probably inappropriate for the Bleriot, but so far without consequence, and it rides great. I can't say enough nice things about the bike -- I've used it on single track in the mountains of North Carolina, and ride it daily on the streets of Atlanta, and it does what it should. I am working the other end of your issue, and getting an Atlantis for heavier stuff (and just because I've always wanted one.) The Bleriot will remain my daily commuter, because it's the right bike for the job, and I don't want to lock the Atlantis up at the outdoor rack downtown; it's hard enough to do with the Bleriot. I am using the platform rack on the front w/ the Mark's rack, and it has exponentially increased the utility of an already exceptionally useful bicycle. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings
I have the grip king. It is well made and smooth, but I found it was not comfortable for me because the pedal, while long, is not wide. My feet tended to roll to the outside. I use BMX style pedals now which are wider. On May 11, 9:26 am, sean wrote: > Hi Group, > > Thinking of pulling the trigger on some Grip Kings, but am concerned > about their dimensions. [RBW] WTB: Original Rivendell Reader's CD - issues# 12 - 25
Hello. Does anyone have a Rivendell Reader CD, issues# 12 - 25 that they are done with? I have the discs for 1-11, and 26-35, but am missing 12 -25 in pdf format. I also have most of these in original paper format, so we could also work out a trade. I've recently switched to an e-reader, so before I sit there and scan the remaining hard-copies into PDF I thought I'd check with you guys first. [RBW] Re: Sizing on a A Homer Hilsen
I also have a PBH of 89cm and ride a 61cm AHH with the handlebars level with the seat. I had been using a 90mm stem but now I use 120 and it's much better.
