[RBW] Re: Lights

2010-10-10 Thread Bob H.
If you are not looking for a fix mounted light, or a generator powered
light...

I have a wald basket on the front of my Quickbeam. I use the Dinotte
200 headlight when I ride this bike at night. It is super bright, the
battery pack is small and svelte (either the AA or the Li-Ion). It has
a non traditional mounting method using the rubber o-ring thing. It
can be mounted on the top of your handlebars (great if the basket is
empty), or you can mount it to the curve of your drop bars to get it
outside the basket shadow. It is easy to remove and take with you to
secure. I can't say enough about how versatile this light is, for a
battery powered light (it works great as a helmet light too).

Ryan -- You're welcome!
I first discovered ToP at age 9 (ca. 1972) right after we'd moved to
the Bay Area and they were just starting to get airplay on KFRC for
their one and only single, You're Still a Young Man. I rode my bike
all over Walnut Creek -- Riv HQ is not far from the apartment building
I lived in, now converted to cheesy condos -- and dreamed of growing
up to become a funk musician. That led to a million years of school
bands (and band geekdom), drum corps and twenty years of gigging in
clubs and pit orchestras. How I got into bikes professionally is
another story.

Off to the Oregon Handbuilt Bike Show this afternoon, to see what it
looks like when you combine science, art and craft in one room. I'll
take pix. (Riv content -- riding the All-Rounder there, clad in my

I loaned it to my niece and she wore it for a few months. Then, about two

[RBW] Re: My Betty Foy... at last!

2010-10-10 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Oh, no need for more precise measurements. Thanks, though! Thinking
about it more, I think that there are simply too many variables. I
think my long-term best hope (and this is long-term... a couple years,
maybe) would be for my wife to look at / try on a Betty in person. The
paint job alone would help a lot. Having seen one, I know they look
even better than they do in photographs. If she happens to land on a
58, I think I could enjoy riding it some times, even if it is a bit
small. However, if she lands on a 52, well... then I guess I may have
to get a 62 later, even if it is some large while later.

Meanwhile, I think I could suffer along, being forced to ride my
Hillborne for a while. Maybe two or three whiles. Man, it is a sweet
bike.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

On Oct 8, 6:07 pm, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote:
If I was getting the Betty just for me, then I'd have gotten the 62 as
it fits me better. However, save for the fact that I too would like to
be able to raise the bars a bit higher and at this point cannot (Nitto
stem is at maximum extension) it's still a pretty good fit.

 I'm 5'11 with a PBH of about 89. I can't recall what my daughter's
PBH are, but they are about 5'7 and the saddle comes almost all the
way down into the seat post so it fits them well. Remember I have the
spring B17 Flyer which is taller than an unsprung saddle so I'm pretty
sure your wife at 5'6 should also be able to fit on the 58. I tested
both but just followed the guidelines on the Betty's page to do a
quick assessment on whether it would fit my daughters, we were all
within the printed ranges for the 58.

If you want more exact measurements i can provide them. My oldest
daughter's initial feedback was that she would like to have the
handlebars a liitle closer to her (shorter stem) but that it was OK as
it was. We'll see what her feedback is after we do our next S24O in
Angel Island in Thanksgiving. She won't get to really ride it until
then when she comes home from Berkeley.

Maybe I can convince my youngest daughter to go on a ride with me...
Isn't that ironic? There's a Betty in the house yet Dad still has to
beg to have company on a ride...

[RBW] Why I like you guys

2010-10-10 Thread cyclotourist
Yesterday I'm out for a few hours of riding, and I see a couple cyclists
ahead of me. As I'm pretty slow, I'm amazed that I'm catching up to them.
Watch a bit more and I figure out they're looking at a que sheet and I'm
guessing lost.

I catch up to them, and find out they're part of a quarterly three clubs
ride involving three (!) of the local bike clubs. They're basically getting
to the right area, but tell me of the crazy route they had to follow to get
to this point. Lost several times, and receiving conflicting info from
different pedestrians and drivers.

Their sheet is all messed up with some directions crossed out and new ones
penciled in. They tell me their club buddies left them in the dust 20
minutes after the start of the 50 mile ride.Nice...

I'm going in the same general direction and offer to show them where they
need to go http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/5065705915/. They're
a little slow, but not that bad. No reason to get dropped! Plus it was
sold as a recreational ride, and NOT a training ride. Along the way I
invite them to follow me on my intended route as it's 15 miles of beautiful
back roads just a bit further up the road. They tentatively agree to that.

We make it to the water stop, and run into a chunk of the other
riders. Everybody's
kinda' standing around and not generally
enthusiastichttp://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/5066319966/.
Not the friendliest lot. And as for me, they were doing their best to
pretend I didn't exist. I didn't need them to bend over thanking me for
helping their club-mates out, but a little Hi, nice bike, how old is that
thing anyway, you really ride a saddle like that? wouldn't have been too
tough on them.

I go and get water from the fountain (wouldn't think of using their precious
bottled h20) and come back to hear them telling these two ladies how awful
my route is, full of homicidal traffic and multiple construction sites. I
look at the two, shrug my shoulders and tell them it's a great ride. Low
and behold, my charges trust me once more and keep on going up the hill in
order to drop into the valley. We do this while watching the rest of the
riders turn back and return the way they came.

We end up having what one of them described as One of the best rides I've
ever been on. Success! We hit the canyon and ride for at least four miles
at 25-30 MPH without pedaling once! Crazy cool tailwind that pushed us the
whole way. Minimal cars, some construction and plates on the road, but no
biggie. Lots of cows and horses to look at, a train goes by. Just neat
rural riding!

I guide them to their meet up spot at a coffee shop just as I get a flat.
I'm out front fixing it, while their club mates again do their best to
ignore me. In the meantime two of the baristas come out and ogle my bike,
practically drooling on the saddle.

And that my friends, is why I enjoy our SoCal Riv rides so much. The
contrast is just amazing. Lots of different speeds, but everyone seems to
end up having a great time. Thanks to everyone that's been able to meet up
for one, and I hope you can make our upcoming Fall/Winter
series.http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_society/discuss/:-)

Thank you for taking the time on that, David. Every time I've ridden with people on thislisthas been one of the best rides I've been on, and it'sso cool that from here to Seattle, there are plenty of niceopportunities to get together. well. Then, I have the pants converted into shorts or knickers via
  hemming and pegging.

A couple years ago, I acquired a live-in seamstress and this really
helps. Her improvements included removing the front pockets and sewing
the opening down so that there is less friction when churning the
legs. I ask her to leave one rear pocket functional, which is where I
  normally tote a camera.

She recently felt overworked and taught me how to do the same
alterations on the sewing machine. They really are quite easy, as long
as you have someone to pin you initially to get a proper fit. So far,
I have plus-four and plus-two knicker conversions, along with several
shorts conversions. Currently, I'm working on an easy approach to
  adding in a gusset.

Overall, though, I like the fact that I can get the features I want
and a good fit. Also, if I'm patient enough in searching a couple of
shops over a period of a couple of months, I can usually find a fabric
I like. All for less than $10 a piece.

Wool would be great, but I know that's not going to happen.

I'd buy the MUSA pants, but I can't do the blue crotch.  Just too

They're basically
   getting
to the right area, but tell me of the crazy route they had to follow to
   get
to this point.  Lost several times, and receiving conflicting info from
   different pedestrians and drivers.

Their sheet is all messed up with some directions crossed out and new ones
penciled in.  They tell me their club buddies left them in the dust 20
minutes after the start of the 50 mile ride.    Nice...

I'm going in the same general direction and offer to show them where they
   need to go http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/5065705915/.
They're a little slow, but not that bad.  No reason to get dropped!  Plus
   it
was sold as a recreational ride, and NOT a training ride.  Along the way I
invite them to follow me on my intended route as it's 15 miles of
   beautiful
back roads just a bit further up the road.  They tentatively agree to
   that.

We make it to the water stop, and run into a chunk of the other riders.
   Everybody's
kinda' standing around and not generally
   enthusiastichttp://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/5066319966/.

I go and get water from the fountain (wouldn't think of using their
precious bottled h20) and come back to hear them telling these two ladies
how awful my route is, full of homicidal traffic and multiple construction
sites.  I look at the two, shrug my shoulders and tell them it's a great
ride.  Low and behold, my charges trust me once more and keep on going up
the hill in order to drop into the valley.  We do this while watching the
rest of the riders turn back and return the way they came.

We end up having what one of them described as One of the best rides I've
ever been on.  Success!  We hit the canyon and ride for at least four
   miles
at 25-30 MPH without pedaling once!  Crazy cool tailwind that pushed us
   the

Thanks to everyone that's been able to meet
   up
for one, and I hope you can make our upcoming Fall/Winter
   series.http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_soc...:-)

Much thanks go out to Rob Harrison for setting this up! How could we
resist the 10:10 on 10/10/10 thing? I was determined to go, no matter
the weather.

I think we all figured, and hoped, that we'd be similarly minded
folks. We were, and it was good fun. That was a nice sized group, too.
Brian and I had beers (some food, too) afterward, and are looking
forward to more such rides around our Emerald City.

We're also thinking about a group S24O sometime . . . maybe next
spring or summer. Lots of great riding in National Forest Lands around
here.
