You sure he didn't mean a 26" frame size (not wheel size)?

[RBW] Re: Wheel Lights Pondering

2010-12-12 Thread Bill M.
Reflective tape intended for use inside the rim was once sold under
the name Sidelights. The package looked like this:

http://www.metroped.org/sc/sidelight.htm

They were very reflective, and showed up well from the front, back or
sides. I haven't seen them in years. The advent of v-section rims
may have done them in, they would not have conformed well to the sharp
bend.

I don't think that standard reflective tapes would work as well, but
it could still do some good. I do like reflective sidewall tires for
commuting at night.

[RBW] shimmy

2010-12-12 Thread dpco
in the eighties i had a bianchi ( superleggera, reparto corsa) that
would shimmy. i have noticed, over the years, that the new frames,
including my riv's, with the the new tubing seem to have more strength
torsionally. my experience is that these modern frames are much less
likely to shimmy than their older counterparts. i also had a basso
"loto" that was prone to shimmy. my rivs, ( ram, rom, and roadeo )
have never showed any sign of shimmy. of course, they were constructed
with the modern, larger diameter tubing.even grant p. once mentioned
that his current framesets( from the ram on) are much better than the
old small diameter tubesets of the old days.
bottom line, steel is real and continues to improve.

I also really liked the Schwalbe tires with the reflective strip until
about 2 months of riding in the Seattle rain covered them with an

Riding to the Rivendell HQ only gets better when the leafs are falling
and the my lady friend is leading the way. Riding for some early
holiday gifts for myself. Not much pictures of the shop because I got
caught up talking to Grant about Pranayamas, yoga breathing exercises.
You'll be surprised on how much just breathing can help increased just
daily exercises. After doing some earthquake dips, we were on the
road. Another great time at the shop. Happy Holidays to great folks at
Rivendell. Happy rides to everyone on the forum, spend time with your
family whenever possible.

Pictures proved that it happen:

2010-12-12 Thread cyclotourist
Hey John, it's good that you came as it introduced you to some FANTASTIC
trails, but also got you thinking about using your bike differently. These
rides are mostly social, but for myself, I HUGELY like seeing different
places in SoCal that I've never been. And yeah, part of it is an advocacy
issue: I LOVE having seeing people get out on their bikes and using them in
places they never thought they could take "that" bike. Pretty cool!

Now the trick is to find out what went wrong with those legs! You said you
felt plenty strong and aerobic, but cramps. So figure that out and you'll
be good. Then have fun on the downhills!!!

2010-12-12 Thread rperks
Ok I am going to give away one of my sources for 94/58 rings in hope
that if people buy these that TA will not quit making them

http://www.starbike.com/php/product_list.php?prodcatid=7&lang=en&Hersteller=&Kategorie=58%2F94&filter_submit=GO

if the link fails, try
http://www.starbike.com
then components -> drivetrain -> chains/chainrings -> and then filter
by 94/58

I would be shocked if it was a 56 not a 58 since it is A selling the
rings, but you never know unless you measure. One of the nice things
about ring packaging is the measuring templates they include.

David, with that 58BCD crank you can run a 20T granny. That will give
you a similar gear to the 22-36 with your 34.

The 20T's are hard to find but ActionTec makes one in Ti!

I have an old S-works crank that will run that combo and so will some
of the Ritcheys.

The ride looked like a lot of fun. I'm sorry I missed it. I've been

There's an Bogart-Bacall movie called Dark Passage where she picks him

No, that's about half the drive train. Front derailleur, front shifter

[RBW] Re: Wheel Lights Pondering

2010-12-12 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
My biggest problem with any rear light has always been remembering to
turn it on. So for basic visibility I have reelights, a fender-mounted
spanninga and a rack mounted spanninga (both with "senso" or whatever
they call auto on/off). RBW spoke reflectors in the wheels. Reflective
tape on fender. Reflective tape on MUSA pants/knickers (and Splats if
it's raining).

When I do remember to turn anything on it's a Superflash on my
SaddleSack, which it seems is no longer the brightest in the price
range. And it's no DiNotte, of course. But it is bright. And its
battery life helps mitigate my second biggest problem with rear
lights: remembering to turn them off.

Ixon IQ up front. Again, probably not the absolute brightest. But
bright.

I really should get a hub dynamo.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Agree with Justin, the PDW is brighter than the Suerflash. But the
batteries last a shorter period of time.

Have used the Rivendell spoke reflectors in the past. Only one on the
winter commuter right now. The front was rubbing against the brake
pads. Have to find a better method.

Ankle reflectors may work, but whenever I use them they seem to slip
around too much. But should start using one again.

[RBW] Re: Spikes

2010-12-12 Thread Angus
Speaking of cold and flats:

I was riding the All-Rounder to work earlier this year, temperature in
the mid-20s (cold for Texas), dark. I have not yet discovered the
Rivendell wind proof gloves and my fingers had gone completely
numb...then I noticed the rear end of the bike felt a bit "loose and
squirmy"...DOH! I have about 1 mile to go on an 8 mile commute; I
leaned the bike against a chain-link fence and concluded that this was
a slow leak...time to do a "pump and pedal!" I took off my gloves,
found the mini-pump (I don't use these anymore) and started pumping
like a mad man...the tire inflated at about the same rate as my hands
warmed up :-). Turns out the tire would deflate at about the same
rate than my fingers would loose feeling...one more pump up session
and I was at work.

Worked out just fine in the end.

[RBW] Re: Shimmy, according to BQ NRC

2010-12-12 Thread Jim Cloud
I'm in agreement with you concerning wheel sizes of the 1970's
(Chicago era) Paramounts. The touring models (P10-9, P15-9, and the
P60, P65 Ladies' models) were factory standard equipped with a 27"
wheel size (either the 27" x 1 1/4" Schwinn Le Tour tire or later the
27" x 1 1/8" Schwinn Super Record tire, both tires made by the
National Tire Company in Japan). Optional, at extra cost (including
frame mods), was the 700c tubular equipped bike (with either factory
supplied Clement "50" cotton tubulars or for extra cost the Clement
"Campionato del Mondo" silk tubulars). The racing models (P13-9
"professional road racer" and P-14-0 Track bike) were equipped with a
700c size tubular tire wheel, until a 700c clincher tire became
optionally available in 1978 for the road racer (the Schwinn "Super
700c" tire).
.

If there was a 26" wheel size model of the Paramount, during this
period, I've never heard of it (there certainly isn't anything shown
in the Schwinn product literature of the period that indicates that a
26" wheel size was available).

[RBW] Re: Spikes

2010-12-12 Thread SFF
Never had a flat? Guiness book of World Records where are you man? My
last two were self inflected. While topping off, the bike shifted and
the top of the stem broke off. I put Marathon Supremes on the
Hillborne and have had no flats since but I've had my share and I hate
'em. Yes I do.

We might get a snow day or two down here, sometimes a little ice but
really not much Winter to speak of. But we have puking hot Summers and
I mean puking hot. Too hot to ride for more than an hour or so for
several months. I'll take that over snow every day of the week.
Anytime is gets below 50 I start getting nervous. I think those
California folks have it going on - nice riding weather most of the
year. Might join them out there soon, I hope!

Hey Joel, the winters are pretty mild where I live in Southwestern
Ontario. But we had a blizzard earlier this week, everything shut
down, the schools were closed for three days. I did not ride my bike
during that time.

There are a lot of places in the States that have more severe winters
than where I am. A lot of times during the winter here, the roads are
fairly clear. Other times there is snow on them. I have a couple of
short sections on my commute where I need to ride on trails, those are
the tough places. One good thing about riding on snow is that it
really builds up your leg strength.

On the subject of flats: I never get them. In fact I am not sure if I
have ever had a flat. I remember repairing a tube once when I was a
lot younger, but I don’t think it went flat while I was riding. Now I
use really good tires, but even when I didn’t, I never had a problem.
I even toured on my bicycle at one time, using only the cheapest tires
available, and had no flats. At the time I didn’t know that tires were
supposed to go flat.

Although I did have a number of flat tires on a Lada in Jamaica once.
That was inconvenient.

Yup. Northwestern Pacific. My family was from Marin County and I

Lee Mitchell, a legendary sag driver who has logged countless hours

Looking on the Google I see that these use CR2016 batteries so that

As lights go they aren't too dear ~ USD $ 8.

Anyone using Spokelits?

[RBW] Re: Larkspur Tunnel Open

2010-12-12 Thread Will
That sounds so nice. Once upon a time I lived up near the top in Twin
Peaks, SF. And I had a job in Novato. Once or twice (if I was feeling
especially sadistic) a week I would bike the commute. In the morning I
would pick my way through the climb but at night on the way home I
didn't have it in me. I knew I still had to make the climb up to the
bridge and then up to my apartment in the city. So I would by-pass the
climb in favor of industialized San Raf and past San Quentin. Not too
pleasant in the dark. Good times in retrospect. If I had that tunnel
at my disposal perhaps I would commute three times a week. Thanks for
the update and the memories!

Which is the subject of the Shimmy Review in the Winter BQ!
The Winter BQ recounts opinions and experiences from the past 100 years in a
few pages, and points toward ways to reduce or eliminate the phenomenon.
Subscribe, and you will not regret it! Well, I don't know that, but I
haven't regretted it. I went ahead and got the whole set.

If you do, too, you'll see how groups of riders, some of whom have
considerable training in science, have been exploring French bicycles, yes,
but also other than French bicycles, discovering and introducing a rich body
of cycling knowledge that never made it to the mass market in the USA, but
which was extremely influential, and promises further progress as we develop
new materials and, I hope, a new society as we rebuild American cities and a
better way of life...But, that is just my fond fantasy...

Re: [RBW] Wheel Lights Pondering

+1 on the ankle strap. I used to wear a Rivendell one on my left ankle when
commuting, its long tab sticking out further left. Many drivers complimented
me on my very visible ankle strap, occasionally going so far as to ask where
they could get one. I never got a comment on my tail lights, but that ankle
strap got their attention.

[RBW] Re: Wheel Lights Pondering

2010-12-12 Thread Travis
I have a friend who uses a little knog lights on his hubs. If you were
okay with that method, you could try it with the Blackburn Flea, which
is tiny but rechargeable. Otherwise, hose little watch batteries are
just awful, they're expensive and don't last very long.

That being said, I think spoke lights are fun, but my feeling is that
they aren't bright enough to be seen during the day, and are less
bright than reflectors after dark. What I really like are Schwalbe
tires with the reflective sidewalls - they are surprisingly bright and
offer a large reflective surface area.

[RBW] Re: Shimmy, according to BQ NRC

2010-12-12 Thread Jim Cloud
Your experience with a 1972 Paramount is interesting. I have a 1977
P-15 Paramount, that I'm still riding, and I've never experienced any
problems with speed wobbles. It's a 26" frame bike with a 110mm
extension on the stem. It's rock steady descending on steep roads
with speeds attained of 45-55mph..

The only bike, that I've ridden, that exhibited a tendency toward
speed wobbles was a 63 cm Pogliaghi Italcorse bike I purchased in
1974. It would occasionally develop a speed wobble riding on a level
road, that I could dampen fairly easily by pressing one knee against
the top tube. For some reason, it never developed a speed wobble
while descending (and this was while I lived in Boulder, CO where
there were many opportunities for fast descents!).

It would interesting to know what combination of factors are
attributable to a bike having a tendency for speed wobbles.

My 1972 P-15 Paramount had a terrifying speed wobble back when it was
new. Clamping the top tube between my knees and trying my best to
squeeze the bejeezus out of the tube did in fact stop the shaking. I
subsequently changed the stem length and the speed wobble permanently
stopped.

The bike always felt marginally unstable on fast descents, though -- I
used to describe it as "holding my life in a little goldfish bowl by the
fingertips, arms outstretched".

[RBW] Wheel Lights Pondering

2010-12-12 Thread JimD

On my commute for dark times of the year I want to be REAL visible.

My take is that making oneself visible among many car lights, various
street lights, and

commercial signage, one's bike can't be over lit.

I have 2 bright front LED lights, a Dinotte rear light and accompany
the Dinotte with two planet bike blinkys.
I'm using the Riv wheel reflectors, Riv ankle reflectors, and a
reflective vest. I have an eos led on my helmet
(mainly for getting the attention of cars at intersections). I'm going
for the 'It Came From OuterSpace' look

and it seems to work.

Riding home on Friday I met a bicycler with Niteiz Spokelits on his
front wheel.

When he was moving his bike was quite visible from the side.
Looking on the Google I see that these use CR2016 batteries so that
isn't such a good thing.

As lights go they aren't too dear ~ USD $ 8.

Anyone using Spokelits?

I'm also intrigued by Monkey Lights but my lighting compulsion isn't
so strong (yet) that I'm going to

spend ~ USD $ 60. They do look like fun but a bit of a kludge.

Light em up,
JimD

[RBW] Re: Spikes

2010-12-12 Thread David T.
You are absolutely right, Ray. Right now I am just using the higher
gear. With the 40 mm tires, there is clearance at the back, except I
am limited in how far I can move the tire forward, because it butts up
against the kickstand plate when I slide it forward. That means when I
slide it all the way back in the lower gear, I run out of fork end,
and the chain is a bit slack in the lower gear. It would probably be
fine but I'm not used to riding with a slack chain so for now I am
just leaving it in one gear. I will try the lower gear again when I
have time, and move the fender back accordingly.

brakes. In all of that nothing there was a cyclist. Riding a black
bike. With black pants, black hoodie, black basket, black bag, black
hat, black scarf and black helmet. The only bit of illumination this
rider had in a crowded urban area with tons of traffic was an anemic
RED blinky on the front of their bike that had all of the illumination
output to make me think the batteries needed changed 3 years ago. As a
multimodal commuter in Philly - I live in West Philly and ride or
drive to my job teaching 2nd graders 3 miles away in deeper West
Philly - I am constantly astonished at how many folks on bikes are not
lit up. It's incredibly irresponsible to do so. The cyclist last night
could have been killed, easily, by myself or several other drivers.
Who's fault would it have been? The driver dutifully checking their
mirrors or the cyclist riding in all black at night without adequate
illumination?

Frustrating.

[RBW] Re: Cold Weather Eye Protection

2010-12-12 Thread David T.

A good combination is to wear a peaked cap with a good sized peak
under your helmet, and either a pair of eyeglasses or sunglasses. You
can angle the peak down which helps to keep the wind and snowflakes
out of your eyes, and also protects your face. I have a nice insulated
peaked cap with ear flaps. I take the foam pads out of the helmet and
it fits quite well. My head doesn’t get too hot or cold.

The glasses are sometimes better than goggles when you are exerting
yourself, they won’t fog up while you are outside. The sunglasses worn
by cross-country skiers would work well. Ski goggles are good for
downhill skiing, but when you are producing a lot of body heat they
can fog up. That is why you don’t typically see cross-country skiers
wearing goggles.

Thanks. It is good. (Went to their beer dinner last year.)

Those photos warm me up nicely. Especially as it's 0F here with 16+
inches of new snow and the roads are just starting to get plowed
out.

2010-12-12 Thread EricP
I tried goggles last year. Didn't work for me. Fogged up to0 much on
climbs and general riding. Mainly as I don't breathe "properly"
through the nose. (Knuckle draggin' mouth breather alert!)

This year just going back to letting the eyes tear up and living with
it. Though titanium frames for my new glasses seem to hurt less than
the regular type.

I don't mind at all. Like the re-use of the old tunnel.

Does anyone know which railroad that was for? Part of me thinks it
was the Northwestern Pacific (NWP). But am not sure.

(Yeah, I'm a railroad fan. Big time.)

2010-12-12 Thread newenglandbike
Absolutely, goggles in anything below 25F are great!Depending on
how cold/damp your weather is, I recommend dual-pane goggles if you
can find them. I have a single-pane set that seem to fog whenever I
want to cover my nose.

[RBW] Re: Cold Weather Eye Protection

2010-12-12 Thread Garth
Goggles are great if you can breathe through your nose properly. I'm
one who cannot. Oakley makes a model called a Splice, that allows for
unrestricted breathing through the nose.

Whatever model you choose, you usually have to buy the clear lens
separate . it's just how it is. Everyone who make goggles sells
clear lenses.

An alternative to full goggles is motorcycle goggles, or tactical
goggles, which are smaller but still seal the eyes.

Myself, I use clear safety glasses from Walmart. SafetyVu brand
$5. No fogging riding in the low 20's. My eyes generally water
profusely for the first 20 minutes or so out in the cold, but
eventually my body adjusts. These glasses help a lot, but they're
certainly not sealed or anything. To each their own!
