[RBW] Annual pilgrimage to HQ
I made the trip out to Walnut Creek this week (Thursday) while in town for a conference. For those of you who haven't been, it's not to be missed. I rode a 54 Hunqa with moustaches, a 58 diaga Hunqa with drops, the new SimpleOne (58) with Albas, and the 60 DiagaBomba with Bullmoose bars. Grant set them all up after I indicated I'd love to take a Hunqa and SimpleOne for a ride. Talk about testing out all the combos! All were beautiful, and I found that the diaga tubes neither added much for weight, and definitely met the intended purpose of triangulating the bigger frames. I really liked the Hunqas, and for a pure fun MTB, I'm planning to get a 54 later this summer. It was a gas! If I fall into more dollars (i.e. convince my wife) I'll easily go for a 56 Bomba diagonal. It is a beautiful bike, and rides like a champ. Also - surprisingly light. The single fell down my list a bit - I mostly commute, and until I start having more time for weekend trail rides, it's just not going to get as much time out of my garage. On the people side of things, I talked with Grant, Jay, Miesha, Dave, and Mark. They all were very helpful and just great folks to deal with my silly questions. Grant even entertained my non-bike-guy associate who I dragged along. He talked kids and camping while I was out riding, and before we left, he tossed him a couple videos on child rearing. What a cool business Grant has built! I don't think I've seen anything close to our Riv community - all brought together by the design, opinion, writings, and good nature of one guy with some great employees! Inspiration for us all. [RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
I'm a derailer snob. I prefer XT and Ultegra because..um..I just do. Not necessarily the current versions, though. Any old piece in nice condition will do. I've been looking for a mid-'90s 8-speed-era XT for a while now. Yes, there's a current "normal pull" LX. I recently bought one from a trike rider who upgraded to XT. It's painted silver..I think Riv stocks it now. Joe Bernard Fairfield, CA. On Jun 17, 9:23 am, PATRICK MOORE wrote: > Tangential questions: > > 1. [RBW] Re: New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?
So far my S1 has a 17 tooth single. Can't comment too much on it because I don't even have a chain installed yet, or brake levers. Should get the first trial run this weekend. I'm going to get the gearing tested out for a while before I spring for a White freewheel (if ever). The cranks will *probably* be a Specialized triple from a 1986 Stumpjumper. I have a 1973 Dura-Ace crank that is choice number two. I also have a Superbe-Pro crank that is beautiful, but with a 144mm BCD, I just don't think it's going to work on anything for me ever again. It's currently on a Vitus 979 frame, but I don't think that's ever going to work for me again either. I'm building this frame mostly from the parts bin as you might guess. My plan is a true single speed, no flops or Dos Eno, but that may always change. I'm not getting younger. It does coast. Hey Mojo! Interesting to see that Quickbeam color! Was that stock? What year? On my monitor it looks a bit like the S1. I guess you have a different vintage Superbe crank if it takes a 39? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] The bike collection (or hoard?)
Sort of related to "Rivs in the Rafters", but started as a new thread here since there's little Riv content. And none in my rafters. I have some tendency to hoard (my first and only Riv is in the building stage (S1)) and my wife tends to want to get rid of stuff. That makes for a good balance. A couple of weeks ago I went to an estate sale. I just happened to ride by and stopped in. Holy Crap! What an amazing collection of wonderful useless crap. It truly made me want to go home and throw something away. I remember something Grant wrote about the optimum number of bikes. It was at least seven. A go fast, touring, single speed, beater, one under repair, a loaner, I can't remember the rest. My bikes: Probably early 70s, French, Probably Mercier frame. Probably their closest thing to the Pugeot PX-10. The bare frame is hanging in the garage, stripped for parts about a year ago. It needs to go. 1986 Vitus 979. I've ridden it a lot recently. Even tried it with 26 inch wheels. I sort of like that!. The BB is a little bit low, but it's ridable. It's lovely, great components on it. It needs to go. Two 1986 Stumpjumpers, one "Sport" one regular. These have been my commuters for a while. My not yet completely assembled Simple One. I really need to consolidate down to fewer bikes. I can't ride them all and it's too much work to keep them all maintained. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Thanks for all of the good responses to my question. I feel confident in my decision now. Waiting for my bike has given me plenty of time to second guess just about every part of my new bike, and I haven’t even gotten a look at it yet. I think I am finally done second guessing. I am going to leave it alone, just as it is invoiced. I ordered some cages for it today and that it the last thing I had to order for now. It should be getting really close to the time that I should be hearing something from Riv and I am a bit obsessed with it :) I even dream about its arrival. Definitely beyond what I'd be comfortable spending. But I hope it does work out and becomes a regular model. No matter what. (Well, maybe not a mountain unicycle or full suspension recumbent.) [RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
Happen to like the modern Deore just fine. Have used a modern XT. It shifts more crisply in index mode. At least on bar ends on non paved roads. Otherwise the regular Deore and LX are good rear derailers. Like Beth, I use a cheap Shimano for the front on my Sam Hillborne. Works just fine with a Sugino crank. For hubs, I do think the XT may be worth the extra money. Depending on the level of XT. My 1x9 has an XT rear hub and the bike is nearly stealth silent when coasting. Love it on downhills. Have another bike with a Deore LX rear and it is louder, but still just as dependable. Used it on my LHT all through last winter in Minnesota and it didn't complain once. BTW, old stuff is still good. My 1x9 has an old mid series Deore thumb shifter (the black forward mounted version of the mid-late 1980's). In pure friction mode it's my favorite shifter. Yes, more than the Silvers, because it is a true friction. No ratchets or nothin'. [RBW] Re: New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?
I'm with some of the others hereI have mine set up with 39x36 rings and the 16-19 This allows me a 36x19=51" 39x16=66" and I think I can use it the other way too.but I don't. I don't have the axle changing position on the dropout and I get a mid low and a mid high gear. I plan on a 22 tooth freewheel for the flop side later and may go with a 30x38 up front as I live in the foothills of Mt. Rainier and am old and fat. The 16-18 freewheel is actually a nice combo and with even spaced teeth it works out better with the stock 40x32 IMHO. The white 18 tooth heavy duty trials model is the one to get if you want a single cog freewheel. Finding a gear you can live with 80% of the time is tricky but for me and my terrain that works out to something between 60-68 inches. It is nice to have theheadwind / hill / I'm really poopedgear when you need it though. I once did an experiment to see if I could ride my local hilly 15 mile ride using the 51" only and I did it just fineit was a grunt up the hills and a spin, spin coast on the flats but it worked fine. I can easily spin along at 10-13 mph in that gear and still make it up a decent climb. The 66" is a little rough starting in traffic but once moving its the gear to have if you want to ride at a more normal pace. I would get the 16-18 and later get a 22 if I were to do it over again. This gives you a 39,48,60 and 68 if my memory is correct and is about all you need. [RBW] Re: New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?
I'm running the 16/19 with 32/36 in front on my QB. This gives me about the same range as stock (40/32 with a single 18t freewheel) with a dandy looking fender line, great chainline, a bailout gear AND easy wheel removal. I only use the 16/36 and 19/32 combos. I live in a pretty hilly town and I've used my QB on mountain rides with this set up. If I lived somewhere flat, I'd definitely gear up. [RBW] Re: Market Prices for Riv Frames
Charlie: The older ones with the bi-plane fork can sometimes fetch more, but I personally think the 1985 was the best year (before the chainstay mounted brake reared its ugly head). For a 1985 Stumpy (which WAS the first year with the unicrown "S" stamped lug fork) in good condition and original parts, I'd expect to see it sell on eBay for around $300 to $400 (the eBay market fluctuates from week to week, it's flaky). Personally I think they're worth EVERY cent of that and more, and can't understand why they don't fetch more. Then there are the occasional delusional eBay nutcases who think their 83 is worth $900... it's their perogative to overprice, but honestly they're dreamin. My 85 Stumpy (which I've since customized - http://tinyurl.com/3sfaqko) to be the way I like it is (honestly) as nice a ride as any bike in my stable, except for the Bomba (but it's darn close)... My honest take... KEEP IT... it's THAT good of a bike. The $300-$400 (or even $500) that you MIGHT get for it couldn't possibly come close to replacing it... Keep it, and make it into something special. Peace, BB On Jun 15, 9:35 pm, EricP wrote: > Honestly, no idea. I think that's the lugged unicrown fork model. > (Too lazy to look it up.) Re: [RBW] Rivs in the Rafters
Not that I'm in favor of proliferating Flickr Riv subset groups but perhaps a Rivendell Hoarders flickr group would be in order? But then we'd have to decide if the photos need to be of the bikes/frames hanging from the rafters or if pictures of the bikes in their pre-hoarded days would be acceptable. [RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
The horrible thing about the latest XT rear derailleurs is the lack of a barrel adjuster. Even using friction, I prefer to have one for the rear der. Using downtube or barcon index, no barrel adjuster is unforgivable in my opinion. Yeah, Riv sells an aftermarket one, but that's a lame workaround, fixing a problem that hadn't existed in the last 20 years. I personally like the pulleys on the XT level better than the Deores, so I've stocked up on the M750 generation xts. For the past couple of years I've been using cheapie SRAM cassettes and have not had a problem with them at all. You can get them through Universal Cycles for like $22. There's even a cheaper model available if I remember correctly. In my original response I stated "I doubt I'd purchase a Deore or Ultegra derailer again." What I meant to say was a "Deore XT...". Yes, I'm very happy with my basic Deore derailer and will probably keep using them. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?
My Q has been in single speed mode, vs fixed gear mode, for more than a year. http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/2760281945/in/set-72157607471577085 I am using the 17-19 Dos Eno and that would work for you, though it would be quite low gearing. I am using the 17-19 with a 39-45 up front which is not the most efficient use of the DosEno as the small-large and large-small are the same gear inches. But it gives me three useful gears: 72-63-55 inches. Like other owners, I rarely shift (out of the 72 inch gear) and prefer to grunt until absolutely necessary. On the other (flop) side is a 23T freewheel that gives me a bailout gear of 46 inches. I have only used that gear twice for climbs into the Colorado National Monument. Both times I swore I would never use the Q for that ride again as I hate to flip-flop on the side of the road. Its been long enough that I am about ready to do it again On Jun 17, 9:59 am, "Rob H." wrote: > The 16t/19t White Industries DOS ENO freewheel seems to be sold out on > Riv's website so there must be a lot of SimpleOne owners who are now > installing these on their wheels. I shift my QB from time to time (usually once on my way to work), but if I'm going to shift, I'm more likely to go from 40/16 to 32/19, or to 32/22 by flipping the wheel. -Matt On Jun 17, 11:59 am, "Rob H." wrote: > The 16t/19t White Industries DOS ENO freewheel seems to be sold out on > Riv's website so there must be a lot of SimpleOne owners who are now > installing these on their wheels. [RBW] Re: New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?
Like the Quickbeam, the Simpleone is designed with dropouts that will manage a difference of 8 teeth. 40/19 to 32/16 is 11 teeth, so you can't get all four ratios from that set-up. In practice, I rarely "shift" my QB. I've thought of making it one chainring/one cog, but knowing that I have the ability to shift lower if I get too tired on a long ride is reassuring. jim m wc ca On Jun 17, 8:59 am, "Rob H." wrote: > The 16t/19t White Industries DOS ENO freewheel seems to be sold out on > Riv's website so there must be a lot of SimpleOne owners who are now > installing these on their wheels. Re: [RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
Tangential questions: 1. Aren't the high end lines now relatively more expensive compared to low end lines than they were 20 years ago when XT ruled the roost? I see $250+ rds in catalogues (along with $900 cranks and $300 cassettes). IIRC, top-of-line XT and XTR originally both maxed out at sub $100. Or am I just old? 2. Where does LX fall in S's mtb lineup? And 3: Is there a normal pull LX rd? Thanks. [RBW] Re: Teva Hurricanes on sale!
I actually like riding in these quite a bit. Paired with the Grip Kings, it's my favorite combination on the bike. I like Keens much more for just walking around, as the tevas are kind of flimsy, but on the bike I always go for the Tevas, particularly if I am going to ride a long distance. [RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
Seriously, it depends on whether you're running index or friction. If friction, it does. not. matter. My front derailleur on my All-Rounder is an old Shimano Alivio that I rescued from the metal recycling bin. A co-worker had tossed it for being a little rusty. I scraped off the rust, cleaned and lubed it, and voila! It works fine. Let's say you're running index. Then it depends on whether you're racing or commuting/touring. If the former, you've got to run whatever gives the fastest, crispest shifting. If you're serious about racing you'll pay for the best shifting, or your sponsor will. (These days, according to my most serious racing buddies, that seems to be Sram "Red".) If the latter, the shifting has to be reliable and durable, but not necessarily lightning-fast. If I had to choose between Deore and XT in this case, I'd go for the Deore simply because it's cheaper and gives solid performance. Incidentally, there's a Deore rear derailleur on my All-Rounder as I type this. And true to me cheap-a$$ fashion, I got it used. Run what works. Happy riding! [RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
I doubt I'd purchase a Deore or Ultegra derailer again. My Hilsen has an LX RR derailer I picked up for $35 a few years ago and has worked flawlessly. On my LHT that I recently put together I used a brand new Deore derailer I had picked up years ago for $17 and it's great. If I were to purchase a brand new derailer for any of my bikes I'd definitely get a Deore or 105 for it depending on my needs. Most likely I'd just use Deore. Later this year as the internet retailers are trying to make room for next year's stuff I'll be on the lookout for a discounted Deore derailers. I rarely purchase stuff from Nashbar but I'm pretty sure that was where I got the Deore and LX derailers. Scotty, I say go with Deore. I'm sure it'll work fine for you. Re: [RBW] Is XT THAT much better than Deore?
The mid-range Shimano stuff tends to work great and to be excellent value. The upper end stuff tends to work great and be a less outstanding value. As with all things one may hit diminishing returns. The higher end stuff may last longer, but a Deore derailleur will probably last you 20 years. It's *your* bike. If you like how the Deore works and looks, use it!
