[RBW] Future Rivs

2011-06-20 Thread Joe Bernard
While we're on the subject of guessing what the new Rivendell is, I'd
like to offer up my own "gosh, I wish they would do this" bike.

I'd like a 26-inch-wheel City Bike with an IGH, dynohub, and drum
brakes. Preferably butterscotch color.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?

2011-06-20 Thread brian tester
113mm is what I wound up with on my Hunq. I'm also using a Sugino XD
double up front and an 8-spd cassette, btw. I think Riv recommends
113mm BBs for Sugino cranks, at least, on the Hunqapillar.

Re: [RBW] New A. Homer Hilsen Owner

2011-06-20 Thread Rex Kerr
I'm jealous... last update that I got was that my frame should arrive
tomorrow, but I won't have time to drive down to WC to pick it up until this
weekend! Then another week to get around to hanging all of the parts before
I can ride it!

How do you like the front wheel so far? I haven't chosen my wheels yet and
I'm debating whether to buy a dynohub or not.

Well, I can't do beater because I'm OCD and beaters to me means rusty
frames and mismatched parts. No, no, no. That won't do.

I can't do single-speeds either because I live in the SF bay area and
everywhere I go, there are mountains. In my younger (read: fitter)
days, I may be persuaded, but I'll leave the single-speeds to the
younglings.

All except one of my bikes (and I have a baker's dozen) are loaners.
But I'll have to know you well to loan you any of my bikes and of
course with my OCD, you'll also need to more or less fit. The sole
exception to loanership is my Ciocc, which holds tremendous
sentimental value and is therefore never for sale and not to be loaned
out either.

I'll like to get a Mixte one day though. I once rode a way-too-big
Chinese mixte work bike in my youth and have fond memories of wading
through semi-flooded areas (with my younger sister on the rear rack)
with such that beast. Oh such carefree adventures!

Finally, I think Grant should consider adding a tenth - Folding bike.
Like Esteban, I have a Brompton that is perhaps my go-to bike for
anything less than 4 or 5 miles. That thing is so convenient. I've
ridden it to fancy restaurants in San Francisco (folded and coat-
checked it), and grocery/department stores (folded and stuck it
underneath the trolley). It's been on public transport (buses and
trains) and fits conveniently in my wife's car's trunk when she picks
me up to go somewhere else. Essentially, it's a bike that's accepted
almost everywhere and that doesn't need a lock.

It's plausible. 22 or 24T chainring with 1:1 or 1.6:1 ratio. So you
get a granny in 1:1 and the equivalent of a 35 or 38T ring in the

Retro-direct, anyone?

My guess is that he means it when the HS will be a more "elegant", maybe a
more "integrated" design. It may be less of a bike meant to be widely
adaptable to different configurations, as many Rivendell designs are. But it
won't be a single-purpose bike at all.

[RBW] Re: Google Group Web Pokiness

2011-06-20 Thread Jim Cloud
Jim,
Thanks for your "heads up". I've definitely noticed that loading the
RBW Google group takes a while. I just timed it on my computer and it
took a full minute to load. Not the end of the world, I just open
another tab until the Google Groups loads up. I do wonder what's
causing the pokiness..(?)

[RBW] Re: Vermont Rides/Camping

2011-06-20 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Cool stuff!!!

My brother lives on Grand Isle (Lake Champlain)... I'm headed up for
a family get-together for the 4th of July with my Bombadil and a
custom Fargo that I just built for him. He's got a beautiful house
high above the lake overlooking the water, but I plan to camp under
the stars on his back lawn. He lives next to Grand Isle State Park,
which I camped at many years ago during a bike trip around Lake
Champlain... nice campground. We plan to circumscribe the island
(about 30 miles)... I'm really looking forward to it. Grand Isle is a
nice ride. There is the bike/rail trail that runs between Grand Isle
and Burlington, except for a break in the trail at a narrow channel
crossing where boats can leave the inlet for the open lake. Normally
there is a bike ferry operated by local bike advocacy group Local
Motion, but due to the high water this year, Local Motion indicated
that the causeway and ferry service may be closed for much of the
season while repairs are being made. There IS the normal (old) bike
route along Highway 2, and this still gets you out to Grand Isle and
back.

Once you're out on Grand Isle, there are several options... One of
them is to take a nice ferry ride into Plattsburgh and a loop up along
the western shoreline literally to the Canadian border at Rouses
Point, then cross the lake by bridge back onto the peninsula that
leads south back onto North Hero and finally Grand Isle (a 60 mile
loop!!!)... Now THAT would be cool... I may have to try that.

Peace,
BB

2011-06-20 Thread Roger
"I'm not familiar with the SA 8-speed. Is the shifter indexed or just
the hub?"

The SA 8-speed hub isn't indexed, but it definitely wants to be
centered into each gear without much feedback. Supposedly Sheldon
Brown could do it, but like 99% of the things Sheldon could do, it was
beyond my skills. I miss Sheldon.

Part of the allure of the thumbshifter (which would be about equal
with a barend shifter) was that I used the wheel/cable/shifter setup
as a self-contained module that I could have on or off of my single
speed bike in a couple of minutes with nothing but 2 or 3 zipties for
the cable and tightening the shifter clamp on the bar. Except for the
constant "is it in or out of gear" fiddliness and ker-chunking out of
gear under load it was great. I'd like a clamp-on downtube shifter
best of all for this concept.

Offered to the group rather than ebay -

I have a copy of "The Bicycle Book - Wit, Wisdom & Wanderings". Paperback,
149 pages, in like-new condition. $5.00 free shipping CONUS. PayPal
preferred.

Good little book, but I don't think I'll reread it, so I'd like to move it
along. Even used copies on Amazon cost more with shipping, so if you've
ever though about getting it...

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?

2011-06-20 Thread Garth
I do friction shift Ginz !! Always have ... always will :) I've
stuck with FW's all these years because I have a stock of NOS and
barely used Sachs FW's. . . . and the cogs just last and last and
last ! I switched to Squirt chain lube last year and I seem to get
even less wear on them. I never did quite get why they spec'd a 47.5mm
chainline with 9sp., as the extra cogs are placed toward the center of
the hub. This always perplexed me why they were engineered this way,
as there is room to move the cogs slightly to the right, toward the
dropout. The way they are, the angles are actually worse for the
larger cogs in the middle and large ring, better if you ride in the
small ring. Pros and cons, as always. But hey... cassettes are cheap,
and meant to be replaced often... so if there is extra wear from the
higher chain angles just go with it. Maybe they've designed more
flexible chains these days that minimize the wear though just a
thought.

I bet you can't wait to get your Hunqa built up !

Leslie, the Riv sizing ... I'm not sure why they post it, sometimes
they simply don't change or update text though. Yes, the early Bomba
frames could use a 107 or 110, as the driveside length is the same on
Shimano and Tange(IRD) cartridges . When I bought an XD crank last
year Riv told me the new Bomba's needed a 113 or 115mm, FWIW. The Sam
is/was spec'd with a 107mm. Chainrings are not all exactly the same
diameters either... some brands have a little higher profile teeth. I
don't think they can accurately publish the data because they appear
to make running changes in frames from batch to batch sometimes. Okay
for them on a complete bike sale , as they can try and length they
wish... but not so great for consumers who buy the frame alone and do
not have a bunch of lengths on hand. It's always worth it to call Riv
and ask, but never take it as absolute, they are human too there
is no experience like first hand !!

Hi Zack,

Here's a link about officially sactioned "primitive" camping in
Vermont:

If you're interested crossing the Green Mountains, the Northeast
Kingdom Travel and Tourist Assn. offers a network of recommended bike
routes and loops all over that part of the state:

Have a great time! Do take care if you go soon, I'm sure you're aware
that in roads in some areas are in rough shape due to the recent heavy
rains and flooding.

I'm not familiar with the SA 8-speed. Is the shifter indexed or just
the hub? The silly thing about not offering a bar-end or similar for
the Rohloff is that the shifter has no indexing - it's all handled at
the hub - so the only issues are the dual cable setup (easy enough)
and pulling enough cable (more work but doable.)

I feel the same way about the SA 8-speed I have and its twist shifter.
I tried using a friction thumbshifter with it but had too many bad
shifts. I see that J-Tek has taken it upon themselves to do what SA
should have. Maybe I'll spring for the $125 barend shifter some time
and put the SA back into service.

 Does anyone prefer twist shifters?

Not a chance, I'd say. Pedersens have to be fitted to the individual,
no way you're going to get a decent range of sizes with 3 frames.
What's more, you can buy a Pedersen replica right now. Jan tested one
in BQ last fall. Where's the uniqueness in that? Might as well do a
rip-off of an F-frame Moulton.

[RBW] Re: HS

2011-06-20 Thread cm
I think an IGH bike makes the most sense and possibly even a Rohloff.
What other IGH would you want to ride off road and take touring? And
that would put a lot of restrictions on the bike. What else would
there be left to choose? Brakes would be determined by whether the
bike was set up for cant-, center, or v. Handlebars would need to be
25.4 (unless I am not aware of a road bar Rohloff shifter). That would
also determine brake levers. So you are left with choosing the crank
(maybe) and front wheel (unless he is planning dynamo)?

Of course the handle thing is possible-- but that isnt anything really
different, just another piece of metal (more triangles!).

If I had a spare $4300 I'd be all in!

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?

2011-06-20 Thread Leslie
Interesting.

I'd previously noticed on Riv's website on the BB page, that they
said:

"Sizing:
Non-Rivendell Road bikes with three chainrings and no bowed-out
chainstays: 110mm.
Any bike with bowed-out, but not ultra bowed-out chainstays: 113mm or
115mm.
Rivendell models except the Atlantis: 113mm.
The Atlantis: 107mm."

But after Grant and made some comment about the Bombadil being more
akin to the Atlantis, I went and looked, also noticed that On the Riv
sample-build page for the Bombadil, they spec a 107-BB for it, too.
Hadn't heard that about earlier Bombas versus later ones wonder
how much of that has been superceded...

I don't know about the Hunqa's, which way they'd go, have been
plotting on the Bomba myself, gatherin' information/thoughts.

If I ponied up $4300 for a Rivendell and got a Pedersen type bike, I'd
be furious. Too weird, I wouldn't want it, and there's no way I'd
recover anything close to my money if I tried to sell it. And I
suspect I wouldn't be alone in that opinion. That's why I'm still
thinking a hub-shift townie bike.

By the way, speaking of townie bikes, has anyone else seen the Civia

2010 Riv Atlantis, custom pewter paint, Alba bars, fully racked and set for

2007 or so Lynskey Ti custom (built for previous owner), LHT fork, Alba bars,
700C Fat Franks, for longer rides at the shore (the steel bikes seem to rust
very quickly right on the water).

In process:

2009 Bombadil, almost finished rebuilding as an all-black Rohloff/SON equipped
doomsday bike (the "Stealth Bomba"). Quasi-Motos, Riv Bullmoose painted to
match frame; still tinkering with Forward Components eccentric bottom bracket
(so no chain tensioner). Black Pass and Stow front rack black large Wald

1985 Fuji Sundance lugged steel MTB, almost finished rebuilding (there's a
theme there, right?) as a winter/rain bike, with SA 8-speed/drum rear, SA
dynamo/drum front, studded Nokians, Dirt Drop bars and a Gamoh front rack.

1985 Mongoose chrome MTB, being rebuilt as a Fat Frank-equipped cruiser w/ Phil

Tubus SS racks.

Waiting their turn:

2007 Bleriot, to be built as a vintage-looking SS, w/ wooden rims, drilled
Campy front/White ENO rear hubs, cream Hetres, Weigle-modified Stronglight
track crankset, SOMA Lauterwasser bars, Ideale saddle, etc. I guess this one
would be for parades?

2011 SimpleOne, gofast fixed gear, Moustache bars, Challenge tires.

1985 Specialized Stumpjumper frame/fork, vague plans for a drop-barred, Big
Appled ocean liner.

1985 MB-2 frame fork, vague plans for a SA Duomatic coaster brake beach house
loaner/beater, with Big Apples and maybe a Riv Bullmoose set.

And VERY deep in the queue, a 1930s Peugeot mixte, requiring complete
restoration, and currently beyond my skill set.

I guess this exercise persuades me that I need to simplify my files

Inside or outside?

Since i know where you live Jack, you need to take relative humidity
into account if you're doing it outside.

During the summer here you might want to think about bringing them
indoors, shellacking them on some newspapers and letting them dry
inside. It'll happen A LOT faster. :)

Inside with a RH around 45-50% it shouldn't take any time at all to
dry nicely. - maybe a day at most.

Outside it will be.. longer.

[RBW] Google Group Web Pokiness

2011-06-20 Thread CycloFiend
Hey all -

A couple people emailed me over the weekend, and I just wanted to pass along
that there have been some access issues reported.

Just a heads up that for some reason, the web version of the RBW Owners
Group has been loading up very, very slowly (or not at all) for no apparent
reason for the past couple of days.

I'm checking into it, but don't have a clear explanation as of yet. (Ghost
in the Machine is idea #1 right now...) Google may have monkeyed with some
things behind the scenes and it's just rippling through the interwebs.

If you just access the group via email (web or pop3) you probably didn't
notice a difference. It only has been happening if you go to the Groups
page and then find it takes a while to load.

Remember, pokey internet response is a good excuse to ride.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?

2011-06-20 Thread Ginz
Well...interesting choice of hub. I have the same hub on my bike.
However, mine is an older model from the early 90's. I believe I
measured the chainline at 42.5mm. Your's may be a bit different,
though it is most likley 45mm. If you use the Sugino with a 110mm,
that ought to give you a 45mm chainline in front, as well. Even if
your hub and freewheel yield 42.5, it is close enough. With a 9speed
or 8speed cassette, you start to get further away because those are
generally a 47.5mm chainline. However, if you are using friction
shifting (and I hope you are!!), especially in the front, it should
all work fine. The biggest concern is the chain rubbing the front
derailluer in a indexed setup. If your chainline isn't perfect, you
may end up with that annoying rub in certain gear combos.

As far as chainstay clearence, I doubt that you'll have any issues
with the 110mm but you may want to email Riv to be certain. My Hunq'a
frame is still in the box at the moment so I'm not sure either. :)

Re: [RBW] The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-20 Thread cyclotourist
Have y'all noticed how well Surlys and Salsas are represented here??? They
sure do make some nice, well thought out and relatively inexpensive bikes
that compliment Rivendell bikes & velosophy.

Right now, I've got it down to four bikes. Was five for a while, but I
couldn't justify my Quickbeam. I need me some gears!

So, an All Rounder, which really is one. Can do anything I want it to do,
and could very conceivably become my only bike. I have a 36h Phil hubset
with knobbies for trails, and a 32h DA/CR-18 that's my everything else
wheelset.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157602592825848/

Then my Riv Road, which is a total vanity bike. Bought second hand on the
'bay. About seven pounds lighter, and only able to take 30mm tires, so fast
but not as versatile. If I ever need to sell a bike, this would be the one
to go.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157604046492434/

Next is my Surly Karate Monkey, which is a great 29er. I'm kinda' thinking
of upgrading to a front -sus bike, but hard to justify that is this goes
everywhere I need it to go!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157623615047170/

Finally, I have a real neat Schwinn Racer that I use a lot for shopping,
library and similar round town stuff. A great bike that's coming up on 40
years old!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/437182423/in/set-72157594443171032

Oh, and the front half of a Co-Motion Double Espresso that will be going up
for sale in order to get a Periscope. Anyone, anyone...?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4529510381/

I'm not missing anything, and feel I could give up the Road and maybe even
the KM if I had to. It's really nice to have options though!

Re: [RBW] Teva Hurricanes on sale!

2011-06-20 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I ride Tevas all the time (except for commuting to and from work) and love
'em. My feet have Teva-tans. :-) If you get on Sierra's mailing list you can
even get 'em cheaper than $20 at times. I just ordered a pair and with the
email coupon code I think I paid $15. I've got a stash of them and whenever
I can get a pair under $20 I add to the stock. My folk's dog just ate a pair
last week in Hilo so stocking up is a good thing.

My experience with sizing is the 12 is a true 12 - sizing down wouldn't work
for me.

Re: [RBW] The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-20 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Let's see...

1. 66cm Quickbeam: 40/32-19/16 gearing, m-bars, mini-front/platrack, R14 in
back, Rich built wheels - sort of the ultimate commuter bike for me but I do
ride it long distances too.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/5446966241/

2. Bike Friday New World Tourist (it's been to Riv Central) - living in
Hawaii makes it really expensive to travel with a bike hence the BF. It's a
24 speed with an 8-speed cassette/3 speed SRAM DualDrive combo. Custom built
for a heavier rider this bike has been to Walnut Creek (and a few other
places round the bay), Mexico City, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and
will be ridden across Iowa in this summer's RABRAI.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/5852203108/

3. Fujiyama ATB - a relic from the late 80's this was the house brand of the
McCully Bicycle Shop named after a friend/partner(?) of the owner. Still a
family concern they don't do house brand bikes anymore but I think they used
to carry Bridgestones. The son in the shop immediately remembered Grant when
I brought my QB by the shop one day. This bike has been converted into a
single speed town bike. I am the original owner but it sat in storage for
years - now it's my go to bike when I want to hang out at the beach (and
won't be able to keep an eye on where my bike is parked).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/4428293840/

4. Raleigh something or other - My Hilo bike, this is an old 12 speed
Raleigh which will probably rust away some day. The only changes I made were
new Nitto DirtDrop stem to get the handlebars up and Grip Kings (which are
actually on all my bikes). I'm still deciding what to do, if anything, with
it other than ride it when I'm in Hilo. It really, really needs new spokes.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/5189014872/

I recently gave away my fifth bike, a Giant Sedona. It wasn't a bad bike but
in the end I never rode it anymore. It's the bike I got when I decided to
get back to biking. I considered turning it into a longtail but reality set
in when I realized I was out of space in my apartment. Of course there's
still room for another Riv. But which one/s?

N+1: I've got town and travel covered so now I'm waiting for inspiration
(and a cash infusion) to hit me as to which Riv I need next.

I don't think I'd go so far as whacky, but I must admit that a handle would be
completely unnecessary.  I've toted many bikes around for many years without a
handle, and it's worked fine so far.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?

2011-06-20 Thread Garth
Hi Ginz, I currently am using 135mm Phil 7sp FW hubs with multiple
sets of wheels. I may go to a 9sp. cassette one day, but I don't see
what difference that would make regarding the BB length. If you have
further thoughts on this, please do share! I'd use the same 110mm
Tange for the Bombadil if I ever did get some 9 speed hubs. I'm
considering a Hunqapillar or a Sam frame frame currently. I know the
Sam can use the 110 also, and it would be great if the Hunq could use
it also so I'd only need to stock a 110mm BB size for all my bikes. I
always considered BB length a chainring clearance of the chainstay
issue, not a hub issue.

On my early production Bombadil I have a 45-46mm chainline with the
24/36/48 XD and 110mm Tange cartridge BB, clearance for the rings is
just right. I was told by Riv on the later Bombadils, they required a
115mm BB. I was hoping the Hunqapillars would take a 110mm and not a
115mm like the later Bombadils, hence my question.

that's quite a compliment. and I agree! as long as you don't mind 5
months of winter.

Zack - like the above posters recommended, just pick a place where
you'd like to spend some time - whether it's the mountains, islands,
lakes - and go for it.

I think a trip up to Lake Carmi would make for a great S240 - lots of
cool back roads to get up there. A little closer would be Cambridge
State Forest. Little River State Park near Waterbury is another good
option. How about Hinesburg Town Forest - pitch a tent and go climb
Texas Hill, Lincoln Hill, Pond Rd/Wes White and refuel at On the Rise
in Richmond before the sun goes down. Or Lake Iroquois? Mt.
Mansfield State Forest? Camel's Hump State Park. It's kind of
limitless around here, just depends on how far you want to ride.
Also, don't forget about the ADKs - it's so easy to jump on the
Charlotte ferry and pitch a tent in NY somewhere along the lake or in
the mountains.

Have fun!!

[RBW] Re: The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-20 Thread EricP
If going by tire size -
40mm - Sam Hillborne (Schwalbe Marathon Dureme)
40mm - Cross Check (Marathon Supremes)
50mm - LHT (Big Apples)

Winter - 40mm studded (Cross Check), 1.75 studded (LHT)

Sometimes might go as skinny as 35mm (Paselas) on a bike. Most of the
time, now, that's too narrow. Might start looking at 42-45mm for the
Cross Check. If I can find fenders to cover.

[RBW] Re: Vermont Rides/Camping

2011-06-20 Thread cm
My brother lives in Burlington-- might get my vote for the coolest
city in the US. I have done a fair amount riding up there. You can
camp in any of the National Forests-- pick a spot and go for it. You
are supposed to be a 1/2 mile for the road (i think), but i usually go
far enough so that i cant see/ hear cars and figure that is good.
Other places are always a gamble-- is it private property, whose land
is it, etc. Under bridges can be good if they are flat not exactly a
good way to enjoy nature. At big farms i have friends who stop and ask
if they can sleep in their field-- most have no problem with it. The
other thing that i have done is sleep behind fire stations, behind
churches, and down by the river. In my experience you are much better
out of sight in the woods than in the open.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-20 Thread rb
3 for me - all need to be fast and able to carry a load; and all weather /
conditions -

main ride - Boulder 700c, drop bars, Ostrich bag or sometimes basket, SON &
edelux, VO rear rack which I thought would be useless, but actually gets
used quite a bit for overflow from the front carry; Gipiemme shifters on bar
ends. Trashed the full 1990s Campy gruppo over the winter, it fell to
pieces; so now all Shimano gearing. A fast, fun, very comfortable ride; and
good looking too (white, no decals, honjos, silver racks and components)

winter ride (in the snowy muddy Berkshires) - Kog PR, G1, S3X (3 speed fixed
hub), convertible rando / giant Porteur rack, Novatech dyno. Used to be set
up as 3 x 8, no matter what other bikes I've had during the tenure of the
Kog, I keep coming back to it, and not just due to 650b; even though it's a
little too stiff for me, there's an incredible sweet spot that it hits.
Great trail rider / rough road rider too

Peculiar outlier - custom painted bike friday NWT, Soma Mustache bars,
sprung b17, racks front and back...the BEST freight hauler I have, loads
unnoticeable. 3 x 9; vbrakes 1.5" tire width - fast (except uphill, but
that's me needing to spin harder, not lose momentum etc). Shared with wife
for travel bike; used by me as the freight hauler when large things are
going back and forth.

tandems -
Bike Friday tandem for me and my little boy who has gone from 30 lbs to 70
lbs in the 4 years we've used it together, and has always been a random
input...sometimes massive power (relatively), and sometimes deadweight. We
use it for general getting around all over in our rural hilly area, up to 20
mile r/trip. Or into NYC for long days of flat riding (wherein it, and he,
shine). With a quick conversion to fit the wife it's a 28mph cruising on
the flats for hours

Santana from 1999 - the BEST riding tandem we've ever had. For awhile set
up with a kid back, and now just kept on tap for the future as we use the BF
tandem more. But one day, for long trips, when the little guy is on his own
/ or on his own road bike leaving us behind (hopefully), this'll be the one
we use together

wife's bike - Riv Glorious, custom paint, great riding, like the Kog, an
ineffable rightness, a real flyer, I wish it fit me!

At one time all our bikes were exact duplicates of each other, but now (to
me) they are different enough (ie Kog and Boulder and BF) that the
variability keeps them from being sold off.

[RBW] Re: The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-20 Thread Bryan Edgar
Got three good ones! I can finally stop combing Craigslist every day
(for now). With young kids at home, I don't get out much for weekend
rides. My bikes share daily commuting duties mostly with the
occasional 30-mile ride on weekends. These are all enjoyable in their
own way:

64cm Silver Quickbeam - love it. Noodles, fenders, rear rack,
panniers. King commuter and funmobile.
25.5" 1988 Trek 400 - Moustache bars, Carradice saddle bag, 28c
tires. Speedy commuter when skies are clear and I gotta get somewhere
in a hurry.
23" 1989 Stumpjumper Comp - Albatross bars and knobbies. This is my
main winter ride for the long Wisconsin snow season. I'll take it on
some singletrack a couple times a year. It's also good for hauling
the kids in the trailer. Otherwise, it doesn't get much action in the
summer.

I've got nearby areas where I could stealth camp, but they are all
sandy (even under the bosque trees the soil is old river silt) and
there are coyotes hanging around -- fine to ride through but not so
fun, I imagine, for camping. No fires either, since it is fire season
here. I wish there were grassy, green areas available.

2011-06-20 Thread newenglandbike
I rode through VT last year- what a beautiful state. There are
lots of places to camp, not all of them 'designated'.Usually I
just ride until it is about an hour before dark, then start thinking
about a spot for camping. If you are on less-traveled roads or in
national forest areas, you'll find something.Just don't leave too
many beer cans and cigarette butts behind and you're good to go.*
Best of luck and have fun!

Also, if you don't live in Vermont, how do you go about choosing
places to go on your S24O's? I know that part of the beauty of the
S24O is the spontaneity - but would love some guidance on how you got
started.

[RBW] Re: HS

2011-06-20 Thread Peter Pesce
What a fun game! Here's my guess...
This is the prototype for the commuter/city bike Grant mentioned a while
ago.
But, I think, Riv wants to have a sample size greater than 1 to assess the
various ideas on the bike, so the idea of a "limited edition" of higher-end
prototypes is a pretty good one. I'm also guessing that this is a test of
concepts, not fabrication efficiency or build quality, like you would ask
for from a factory. By hand-building all the frames locally, Grant can
observe, fiddle, and tweak as necessary. Oh, and the R&D gets paid for by
the customers, which is probably a big deal if things are as lean as they
sound at Riv HQ.
I agree with others that the front derailer issue probably stems from the
inclusion of the bottom bracket hand grip that we saw mocked up in bar tape
a couple of months ago. Doesn't mean there couldn't be a work-around, but
declaring "no FD" heads off any potential whining...
As for the "mystery option" - brake type is a pretty good guess - Riv is
probably interested to see how many takers there are for canti or sidepull.
I'd LOVE to see them offer center-pull braze-ons, but I doubt it. The other
option could be dropouts - horizontal or vertical.
No clue what the "HS" stands for!

Hey All -

I live in Burlington, VT, and would like to start doing some overnight
camping trips in VT. I am researching good spots to do the
overnights, and figured I would ask on here as well. Have any of you
done any in VT?

A lot of what I am finding for state park camping is more like car-
camping, (with a bunch of campsites clustered together/showers/
firewood/firepit, etc. - which is okay, but not really what I am
looking for.) I would like to camp somewhere that I am by myself,
maybe have a nice view, and have a chance to get away. I thought it
would be worth asking on here, as some may have experience.

[RBW] Re: The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-20 Thread Esteban
Here's Grant's quote from Riv Reader #42:
"seven is good. a beater, a bomber, a single-speed, a tour- ing bike,
a lightish road bike, a do-all racked and bagged bike, a mixte, a
loaner, and a work in progress. seven? Make it nine."

Bikes are fun.  I like to think about tire size;

28cm -- Riv Road Custom S&S couplers 700c (58cm) - "lightish-road"
32cm -- Ebisu Randonneuse 700c (58cm) "..."
36cm -- Kogswell P/R city hauler 650B (58cm) "beater"
38cm -- Velo Cult Demontable all-road randonneuse 650B (58cm) "bomber"
42cm -- Rivendell Protovelo town & country tourer 650B (60cm) "do-all
racked and bagged"
52cm -- Black Sheep Ti Custom S&S couplers adventure tour ATB 700c
(56cm) "tour-ing"

The un-built 60cm orange Quickbeam in my office, and perhaps the
Protovelo may go one day. I'd now like a Brompton for my wife and I
both to use, as I'd need to just accept the inferior ride quality that
comes with convenience. Really, I'm "set." Recent mortgage makes
that more so!

If you can solve the common problem of front derailleur angle on small
wheelers with a braze-on bracket that incorporates the necessary
back-angle, why couldn't you use a braze-on derailleur bracket with the
opposite angle, tipping the derailleur forward a bit, to correct for a
too-shallow seat angle?

Or if not a braze-on bracket, how about a stub front derailleur mounting
tube set at the correct angle, as found on RANS crank-forward bikes like
this: http://www.ransbikes.com/Fusion-N.htm ? The Fusion-N looks
like its seat angle is down around 45 degrees or less, and it has a
front derailleur.
