I don't know your taste but have you considered a Profile H2O 90 degree
quill stem, I see some on ebay in silver/90mm/25.4 frequently. There's
always no-name ones that look the same too. The print on the H2O's can be
removed with some Brasso and a cotton rag. From the side it looks a little
larger, but while riding it looks like any other stem. I've used stems like
this for years, and really like the 90 degree angle too.

[RBW] Re: SKS fender sizing (and 650b fit)

2011-07-29 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
HI Erik, my CldVs measure 36, so should fit the hammered ones fine.
But I'm really looking at the 58mm fluted ones on sale for $35. Just
thinking the tires would end up looking relatively awkward underneath
them, but maybe that's ok for the price! Some 50mm Honjos would be
just perfect, but I can't justify those for this bike (doesn't need
any, never sees water, just for looks, garage queen status, etc).

Being me just is so complicated... :-)

[RBW] Schwalbe 650b Fatty

Anyone tried this offering from RBW?

http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/schwalbe-650b-x-45-fatty/10-095

I'm moving down to Bluff UT for the remainder of the year, and I'm thinking
of swapping the Hetres and fenders on the Bleriot for a fenderless setup
with the fattest and most stout tire I can fit. I'll be bombing around the
paved and unpaved roads and trails in SE Utah and on the Navajo Reservation,
and this looks like a good option. Experiences with them? Other options
I'm missing?

Thanks,

You have a perfectly fine non-floating pulley in the lower position.
You could try swapping it with the floating upper, a simple no-cost

[RBW] New 1994 MB-1

2011-07-29 Thread Johnny Alien
This is Rivendell related but not directly so if this is not cool please let
me know.

As you know recently I started a thread looking for an MB. Well I found
this MB-1 and it came in this week. I updated it with Schwalbe tires, Nitto
Bullmoose bars with handlebar tape, and a Brooks saddle. (don't worry I kept
the original stem for now). It's pretty much done but the brakes need new
cable and wired up better.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe 650b Fatty

2011-07-29 Thread hobie
For the price these tires are great. Once you get them going on pavement the
bumps almost dissapear. I do a loop that consist of the road north county
trail in westchester ny to the old croton aquaduct which is dirt. I don't
change the tire pressure. I'm a little cautious when cornering on dirt at
full volume. Make sure they are seated properly before riding. Inflate them
slow and check. What size is your Bleriot? I would also use 26x1.9/2.125
tubes. The 650b tubes are two small for this tire.

He may not have gotten back because I emailed him pretty quickly. I had a

they are essentially just an affordable version of the 93 XO-1. The

2011-07-29 Thread Joe Bernard
I bought a plum '94 when Bridgestone closed..stolen a few years later. You
wouldn't *believe* how few of these are still out there. The XO-1 may be
more valuable/collectible, but the '94 lower-cost XO-3 billed as its
replacement is *rare.* I know the catalogue says a production run of 1000
or so, but I highly doubt that many were made the final year.

My new bike is coming with some nice Suntour XC Pro parts, and I'm going
to appropriately Rivendellize it with Sackville bags and a Brooks saddle
when it arrives (gratuitous Rivendell content, check).

kinds of good things. I was just wondering if anyone owns these and

I have a set of the mini short-stack panniers. I really like them. Very well
made and easy to use. I use at least one bag every work day to commute, rain or

with
the waxed cotton. Also, I really use the zippered top pouch and the side pouch
a
lot. I highly recommend them. I realize that the mini's are designed to be used
on a front rack, but I use them on rear racks. There's plenty of volume, and
the
lid extends for over-loads.

[RBW] A kit for one week.

2011-07-29 Thread Mike
So I was getting my gear together for next week's touring/bike camping
extravaganza. The forecast is good so it's looking like we'll head up
through Gifford Pinchot Wilderness to Mt Rainer National Park. We're
just gonna take it a day at a time and see where we wind up. When we
toured two years ago we averaged something like 80 miles a day. Long
days in the saddle and short nights at camp. I'm still undecided about
whether I'm gonna use big panniers and carry all my load in the rear
or use two small panniers up front and a stuff sack on the rear rack.
I'm leaning towards the large panniers in the rear. I'll also be using
a Ortlieb HB bag. I'm about 90% sure I'll just use platform pedals.

Here's what I'll be taking minus some odds and ends like the tent
poles and food. We managed well on the last tour just picking up each
day's food along the way.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/5989013883/in/photostream

My friend Dylan will be using a semi-cargo bike thing so he's got
plenty of room for taking on any overflow.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/huntercycles/5653595523/in/faves-41335973@N00/

I may even squeeze in a bike camping trip on Sunday night.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe 650b Fatty

2011-07-29 Thread Mike
Get them. I love Schwalbe tires, even the basic Marathons. They're
great tires for all-rounding on.

Anyone tried this offering from RBW?

I'm moving down to Bluff UT for the remainder of the year, and I'm thinking
of swapping the Hetres and fenders on the Bleriot for a fenderless setup
with the fattest and most stout tire I can fit.  I'll be bombing around the
paved and unpaved roads and trails in SE Utah and on the Navajo Reservation,
and this looks like a good option.  Experiences with them?  Other options
 I'm missing?

 Thanks,
 -Jay B.

[RBW] Re: Swift Industries Bags

2011-07-29 Thread rcnute
Very good stuff--I have a handlebar bag and a saddlebag.

Cool folks too. And they have a cool dog for that matter.

No experience with them, but I do like the look of their pelican porteur
bag. . . they look maybe not quite as finely finished as many of the other
bags out there, but they do look rugged with some nice design features.
Thanks for the heads-up on this company, Eli.

Does anyone have Swift Industries bags? (bulitbyswift.com)

I'm very interested in their short stack panniers. I like the design.
It's very backpacking backpack like with the stuffable lid. I also
like the messenger bag-like construction (very waterproof), and the
colors are quite nice. Hand made in Seattle by cyclists, etc. All
kinds of good things. I was just wondering if anyone owns these and
has any input on their durability, hands-on opinions, etc.

  Thanks!
