[RBW] Re: New to the Bunch
Great lookin' bike, Matt. I gotta admit, I'm liking the new Sam green a lot more in the owner photos that have been posted than in the preliminary ones on the site. I'd love to see one in person. [RBW] Jack Browns - Tires For The Future?
One of the main streets in my neighborhood has just been repaved. That's repaved, not the far more common re-surfacing/chip sealing. It is remarkably refreshing and evokes a certain nostalgia to ride on an excellent road surface. If this were the usual case I'd start considering 28mm cross-section tires rather than my default JBs. Given our continuing economic climate I'm thinking that nice roads surfaces are going to become even more unusual. I'm thinking the era of the fat road tire is upon us. Given our continuing economic climate I'm thinking that nice roads surfaces are going to become even more unusual. I'm thinking the era of the fat road tire is upon us. Here in Minnesota that's been the case for a long time. Between the climate and political party intransigence, our roads are awful. We seem to keep building new roads but can't take care of the ones we have. Many cities here have eliminated doing preventive care like chip sealing (which extends the useful life of a road surface by up to 30 years, according to one road engineer I spoke to) to save money on the budget now- at the expense of spending 10 times as much in the future. The result is that we have six months of it being difficult to get around due to ice and snow, and six months of it being difficult to get around due to major road reconstruction because we didn't do good preventive maintenance. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Can include a small Wald basket for $5 more. It's great for carrying stuff, that you need access to during your ride and fits perfectly on the Mark's rack with some zip ties or velcro. Honjo Fenders: 700x43 fluted fenders with leather mud flap attached to front stay. Includes fender stays, fork crown daruma, and all mounting hardware. Re: [RBW] Jack Browns - Tires For The Future?
I think you are right. Fat cushy tires may be a requirement to ride deteriorated roads that cannot be repaved at the moment. Maybe there will be more bicycles out there due to the economics. [RBW] I'm a Rivendell owner! (a saga, long)
Well, technically, it's paid for..it's not here yet. I bought Rocky's AHH. My first/only Riv was a Romulus I bought new in '03 (wow, I can't believe how long ago that was now). It was a great bike, but I never liked the light blue color much. It was a this is the only Riv I can afford purchase, and I don't recommend that approach. Ya don't get used to a color you're not thrilled with (in my opinion). Anyway, I rode it a few years, then decided recumbents were the bee's knees and sold it. I bought a long-wheelbase 'bent, which was very comfortable, but uninvolving. Those wheels so far from each other smoothed the road out so much that I couldn't feel anything. Odd. So then I got a short-wheelbase, which was lots of fun, but a little tall for me. After breaking my 'dabbing' big toe a couple years ago, riding it became an issue, so I moved on to a recumbent trike. It's been huge fun, and I'm not sorry I tried it, but I discovered something with 'bents - *especially *trikes - that hadn't occured to me: Riding them is like being a movie star walking through the mall. *Everybody's* looking, and *everybody* wants to talk. Here's the thing..I have Asperger's Syndrome. Think of it as 'kinda autistic'. Not in an extreme way where I can't function in society and all - I'm not considered 'disabled' - but enough that social interactions which aren't carefully planned in advance can be a bit awkward. So there I am, all alone on the bike, all 'kinda autistic' and stuff..*and everybody's waving and smiling and asking questions.* Sheesh! So, after four years on recumbents, I sat down and did an inventory of how much riding I've been doing, and realized that I've spent less time on the road with bikes that were supposedly more comfortable, hence, should have had me out there *more. *Apparently I've been subconsciously calling off rides because I wasn't ready to deal with it. Not good. So I made an offer on an original Waterford Rivendell, which fell through. Then I considered a new Hunqapillar or Sam; then I thought I would wait to see what the HS production bike turned out to be. Finally, Rocky showed up yesterday with that gorgeous silver-green AHH frame, which I already have most of the parts for (sell me some wheels, people!). SOLD! Yes, I'll get some attention on this lovely bike, too. I don't mind *some*, I'd just rather avoid the Brad Pitt level, if you know what I mean. So I'm back to the Rivendell. I was exploring the Minneapolis urban jungle last night on my Surly Troll with 26x2.25 Marathon Extremes, and as I was rolling happily over some of the rough roads Tim referred to, I couldn't help but think how useless road bikes are in this landscape. Come to think of it, the term road bike itself is becoming less useful. After all, I was riding a bike with clearance for 2.8 tires on roads, and I liked it! I'll still be looking for that HS. I can't wait to find out what Grant has up his sleeve next.. Re: [RBW] I'm a Rivendell owner! (a saga, long)
One addition to my little saga: A few months ago I picked up an Electra Amsterdam sort-of-a-dutch bike. It's a slightly less radical (geometry-wise) version of their Townie Crank Forward bikes, a type of bike that was reviewed in the Reader a couple of times. It's a very sit-up-straight-on-a-big-seat-and-look-around bike..a more upright recumbent, if you will. I love the big old tank. In retrospect, Crank Forward would have been a good place to start..I doubt I would have progressed to full recumbents if I had tried it first. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Marin/Point Reyes Mini Tour....Route Tips and Suggestions
Sounds like a fun trip. I don't know the routes in Marin as well as some on this list, but look for the Cross Marin Trail to get you part of the way to Samuel Taylor. The Bolinas Ridge Trail is a classic Marin MTB route that can be done on an all-purpose bike. Also, incorporating an ascent of Mt. Tam into your route might be worthwhile. Old Railroad Grade out of Mill Valley is a mostly fire road route. In Pt. Reyes, Palace Grocery is a good stop to get food, etc. Bovine Bakery has great baked goods and is a popular stop for cyclists. If you want to borrow a Marin trail map, let me know. This is true in VT too. Most roads are in disrepair and the rest are under reconstruction! Routine maintenance is a bygone memory. If I have to dodge a lost muffler on Memorial Day I can expect to still be riding around it on Columbus Day. So I too, keep riding wider tires, and even though my Rambouillet is my all time favorite bike I am realizing my Ebisu, with 38C Avocets, gets more use, and I just squeezed Jack Browns onto my 84' Trek 620. Many of the people living in Tucson would puke if I said the roads were in good condition. I mean, they seem like pretty capable tires for rough stuff, all things considered, and while more toward the roadish end of the spectrum, I have a hard time thinking of them as super-skinny. Of course it's all relative. -- Forrest (Iowa City) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Jack Browns - Tires For The Future?
Heh... and even with my grousing about the roads, I still ride 700 x 25s at 115 PSI on two of my bikes and 26 x 1.25 at 100 PSI on my A/R... Am glad my Sam Hillborne has 40's, but admit to riding my Surly LHT with 26x2.0 wide tires more frequently these days. At this point, am not even sure I could ride a super skinny tire like a JB. Too much weight hand hand damage over the years to even really consider it. Am realizing the next road bike I may need is a Pugsley. Come to think of it, the term road bike itself is becoming less useful. After all, I was riding a bike with clearance for 2.8 tires on roads, and I liked it! Eric, that was fantastic! no amount of words could quite capture the beauty and tedium and adventure and everything of that ride. I'm just guessing, never having done it, but with your video, i have a much better idea. Great music selections too! Can we get a better shot of yours and your friend's bikes? they looked pretty great! thanks so much for this, Geoff -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Eric, Thank you for that wonderful film. While physically, I could never dream of doing PBP, I truelly appreciate the effort and challenge of that incredible event.
