[RBW] Re: Trail Recommendation Database?

2012-01-04 Thread Philip Williamson
I like that by posting links here, we can use any mapping site we
like, which seems 5x as inclusive.
A short description of length, difficulty, and location, along with
the link is probably useful for long-term searchability. City, County/
Parish, state, length, road surface ('mixed terrain'), and features
like "ocean" or "mountains" might be good keywords to include. If
they're posted to this thread, "database" would filter for it, since
that's not a word I see on the list very often.

"I am not interested in fenders or tires larger than 28, nor am I
interested (for the purposes of this discussion) in fineness of joinery or
cosmetic details. Just fit (or potential for fit) and, above all, handling."

In that case you should just get early 80's Centurion LeMans, Raliegh
Comp., Nishiki International, Panasonic, or similar for like half what you
will pay for the RB1. Great bikes. There are plenty of bikes just as
good if not better than an RB1 in the above respects, without the RB1's
attendant cache & price tag (which is in no small part due to the
subsequent success of Rivendell). Not to downplay Bridgestone- cool
catalogs, innovative ideas (but the RB1 was not one of them).

[RBW] Re: "Half-step + granny" gearing...

2012-01-04 Thread newenglandbike
I used to have a half-step+granny gearing on my Sequoia (but went to a
touring triple now).I use an 8-speed in the back with the DO spacing
spread to 130. I have to agree that with an 8-speed, you definitely *do
not* need the half-step/granny setup. To really leverage half-step
gearing you're just going to be shifting almost twice as often and would
have to be really, really finicky about cadence.

2012-01-04 Thread Scott G.
Phil Wood freewheel hubs can be ordered with 120mm end caps for 5 speed use.
You can then buy new end caps to make the hub 130mm, a handy hub
for bob bikes.

Now is someone could put Suntour freewheels back into production we'd
be in business.

Eric how do you like the S3X ?
I'm looking for a hub gear that will stay in gear.

So far, so good with the S3X. I have this hub on two different bikes, and both
are working fine. The only issue so far is that the hubs don't like to shift
under a load. If you're already grinding up a hill, it's too late to shift
(unless you can somehow soft pedal for a moment). Other than that, all is well.
They are definitely a conversation starter.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadeo or RB1?

2012-01-04 Thread Tim Whalen
Patrick,

I can well understand your desire to get the "right" bike and spend no more
than the "right" amount of money doing so. Perhaps though your question is
moving into a kind of bicycle metaphysics where there really is no
completely rational way of deciding? That being said (asked?) I'll try to
help with my own completely subjective Roadeo experience. ;-)

Subjectively then: My Roadeo's ride is somehow more energetic/responsive
than a Rambouillet's, and I love that ride too. It's a beautiful bike,
feels great to ride, and I wouldn't be too fast to discount those wider
tires either. I ride mine sometimes with 35'ish xc tires on the packed
dirt Santa Fe trail and it's a fast blast. I bet you might find the same
on the Bosque.

Plus I imagine you could always sell it just fine. This being the Riv
forum, maybe the useful philosophical question for you is isn't life too
short not to try this end of the Rivendell bicycle spectrum?

Good luck with your excellent quandary!

"Better" is often simply a matter of personal preference, assuming one
has been it at it long enough to develop preferences. Nobody is going
to be able to tell you that a bike is objectively better than another
and you probably know that. which is why it seems like baiting.
spending a few afternoons test riding some new road bikes and getting
a sense of how they feel based on your preferences will probably get
you closer to a decision than soliciting opinions from folks that may
have very different preferences than you, especially when it comes to
fit (which is highly variable) and handling (which is highly
subjective).

2012-01-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I think coming to the Riv forum to state you don't care about how the tubes
are connected; or how good it looks; is ever so slightly "baiting". The
fact that the Roadeo is meticulously designed, built, painted, and ends up
gorgeous..is at least half of what you're paying for. Nobody buys a
Rivendell simply because it "handles better".

RE: [RBW] Re: Roadeo or RB1?

2012-01-04 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Best to consider the source in evaluating a comment or remark. Patrick is a
(rightly) respected member of this group (Kelly, too, for that matter); to me,
at least, that would argue for opting for the more constructive of two
competing interpretations.

But there's a world of difference between modestly edgy comments (perfectly
acceptable to me, including a comment that one doesn't care how tubes are
connected) and the sort of flaming which is blessedly absent from this forum.
I think we mostly know it when we see it.

Oh man. All this talk of "no-brainers" - You guys have my credit card

Does anyone know if a long reach caliper brake will work in front? I know
the frame is designed for cantis but I kind of like the simplicity of a

rack, so they're not just sittin' there.

Also, what's the max width tire that will fit on the "budget" SO wheels - a

Thanks,

Hey Bobby,
Montclair misses you..let's do that ride. BTW, what's the status of
RivRideEast2? Myself and I'm sure, others are looking forward to it.
The first was a great time and I've enjoyed reading posts here by some of the

turns again. The sale was perfectly timed and I picked up a Platrack and

[RBW] Re: Fender Frustration

2012-01-04 Thread Chris
My wife's Betty also has rubbing on the front/right tip of the fender when
the bike steers to the right. The bike has 50mm Honjo installed with
35mm Soma Xpress tires. I kinda wish the Mark's rack had a boss, like the
Mini front, which could be used to secure the front tip of the fender. The
older version of Mark's rack came with a longer diving board plate, whose
front tip can be used as a stay for the fender. But the longer version of
the spring board is no longer being sold.

Or maybe a washer needs to be loosened. I need to play around with it a
bit more...

2012-01-04 Thread Mattt
Hello Folks,

Thanks for the discussion on selling a bike. It was informative. After a
discussion with the wife , I am selling my Quickbeam. I am selling it for
the price I purchased it from John on this forum at $1200. I thought I
would give the forum first crack before I put it on Ebay. If it is not
sold by Sunday evening, it is going on Ebay. The bike is in great
condition, barely ridden, and the pictures show. I am in Monterey, CA for
local pickup. I will ship it out anywhere in US for actual cost of box,
shipping, etc, which I am estimating at $120. In person, I will accept
cash, USPS money order, but no personal check. If through mail, I will
accept Paypal, USPS money order, but no personal check (If you send a money
order, I will ship the bike when payment is received.)Below if a list
of components and a link for pictures. If you want any additional pictures
let me know.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam vs SimpleOne

2012-01-04 Thread Andrew
The SO has a kickstand plate where the QB has a tube, down between the
chainstays, behind the bottom bracket. I think that's about it... I saw a
sweet SO at Berkeley Bowl today, on my way home, with nice soft tape on
moustache bars. It had the ginormous Wald basket and platracks to hold it
up. I looked for someone inside, carting a large Sackville basket bag, but
the crush of seasoned humanity was too great, I did not espy them.

[RBW] Re: FS: 50cm Rivendell Rambouillet

2012-01-04 Thread Duy Tran
I bought it from someone in LA who was selling it, he had it in
pristine condition as he did not ride it often. He did not know what
the specs are so I don't know. I have been to lazy myself to look, if
you want to know what they are I can easily find it out myself. The
amount of teeth on the crank chainrings and rear cassette were not a
big deal to me as I just saw a bike I wanted at the time and just
wanted to ride. After riding sometime with the rambouillet, and the
type of riding I do I found that this bike is just not for me. The
crank is a sugino but I'm not sure if it is the same as the XD shown
on the rivbike website. I am sad to part with it but it is not the
bike I am looking for and so I rather it go to someone else who wants
the bike and will put it to good use.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadeo or RB1?

2012-01-04 Thread dpco
Patrick,
I can't justify the cost of a new Roadeo to you, but I can explain my
opinions regarding my feelings about the Roadeo being a dramatic
improvement over the 531/sl frames of the past. By the way, I still own a
Basso Loto SLX frameset. First, the my Roadeo frameset is lighter than my
Basso frameset.
Second, my Roadeo is much more stable on high speed turns( especially on
ruff surface). Third, I have experienced shimmy on my Basso( the frame has
very little lateral stiffness). With the modern large diameter, thin walled
steel tubes, the Roadeo is very stiff laterally( no shimmy, whatsoever).
However, the frameset still has the vertical springy, steel feeling. And
this is with a fairly, stiff fork. Some people will not feel these
differences, but to me, I notice this immediately. This may not justify the
cost difference, but to me it was worth it. "To each its own"
Don C.

[RBW] Suggestions on price please

2012-01-04 Thread Lola
We bought two Rambouillet bikes new in 2006 and love them. One is blue,
60cm, cost $2617, the other is green, 58cm, cost $2545. Although well
ridden, they are kept indoors and are in excellent condition. Brooks
saddles look pristine, as does the handlebar tape and just about
everything else, although of course there are a few scratches.
Unfortunately we are now living, and will be traveling soon, on our
boat and they just take up too much room. We reluctantly need to sell
them.
Any suggestions on price? We live in the SF Bay Area.

Thanks for your help.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadeo or RB1?

2012-01-04 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks for all the replies. I am by turns hurt, angered and amused (and
edified) by turn this discussion took and the various responses to what was
probably indeed rather naively particular questions, and I will respond
with my own resolution to adopt Eric Platt's very worthy new year's
resolution, to wag more and bark less.

I suppose my questions were rather too particular for me to reasonably
expect clear replies from everyone, but on the other hand I myself do have
very clear ideas about how the various bikes I've ridden differ in handling
from my two later customs (they are Rivs, as most of you know) which are my
benchmarks for bike handling comparisons. I can say in detail how, for
example, the Herse, Sam Hill and Motobecane handled differently.

I suppose that the reasonable option, right now at any rate, is to get the
necessary clamp on bits to add to my Joe gofast fixie and make it into a
gearie; all the more in that I won't need more than one chainring. Or maybe
not ...

As for the Roadeo, the only possibility right now, anyway, is to have
listmember Ryan Watson buy it, dislike it, and sell it to me at a steep
discount.

Happy new year to all from Patrick Moore who promises to analyze less and
ride more in 2012.

$1200-$1500 seems to be the going range for those bikes on the second hand
market. You might even find buyers on this list. Best of luck!

[RBW] Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread Rex Kerr
I have a Trek 520 that I use for loaded touring:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rexkerr/3030119147/

The bike is a 25" (~63 cm) frame (near traditional geometry), the largest
that Trek made at the time. It's too small for me (as a point of
reference, my AHH is a 67 cm frame and I was debating between that and the
69). I have the seatpost a touch higher than the minimum insertion line, a
threadless stem extender, etc, and it's still just a mediocre fit.

During my last visit to RivHQ I rode the Hunqapillar and really enjoyed the
ride. After leaving I started to think about the possibility of upgrading
and selling the Trek frame. I'm thinking of switching over all of the
parts (mostly LX level stuff). The thing is, I really don't want this to
turn into an expensive endeavor, so I'm trying to get a realistic picture
of what it'd cost.

* Is the Hunqapillar suitable for loaded touring as shown in the linked
picture? How about the SH? The SH is cheaper, but I'm afraid that it's
too similar in ride to my AHH, and I do want some variety.

* Other than the stem and possibly handlebars (due to clamp diameter issues
w/ quill stems), would the other parts be compatible? I'm thinking that I
might also have problems w/ the BB spindle length and the f-der clamp
diameter. Any other issues that I might be overlooking? The Trek uses a
135 mm rear hub and has V brakes.

* Is the 64 cm Hunqapillar (largest size) notably bigger than the Trek?
Same question for the SH. My guess is that it is due to the sloping top
tube vs. the Trek's traditional geometry. Since I was only riding the
Hunqapillar for the fun of it while visiting I didn't really think much
about the fit, and it had Albatross bars and Big Apples, so it wasn't
really set up the way my Trek is (though that might be worth considering
as a touring setup).

* How much do you think that I could reasonably expect to get for the Trek
frame? It's is good condition, though shows the normal wear... a few minor
scratches and light dings, nothing major, no dents, always stored in garage
and parked indoors except while touring.

Anything else that I might be overlooking?

Thanks!
-Rex

[RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread William
Rex

That's exciting to plan out a touring bike that fits you properly! My
opinions:

Hilsen-->Hillborne-->Hunqa-->Bombadil in ascending order of "stoutness".
The Bombadil would be ideal, but it's the most expensive.

You seem to have the parts compatibility stuff mapped right. The front
derailer aspect I overlooked on my first build was that there is so much BB
drop and such a slack seat tube that a mountain bike front der hit the
chainstay. Get your front der from Riv when you get the frameset. Another
part might be the huge chainrings that road triple runs. Most Hunqas get a
24 36 48 or thereabouts. There might be a chainring clearance issue in
your BB worries.

Size, that's an empirical question. compare the numbers. Map them out on
a huge sheet of paper. Grant taught us how to do that last summer, and I
do it for every bike now. I'd wager the answer is yes, the big hunqa and
big Bomba are much bigger than your Trek

That 520 frameset would probably get you $200-$300. That's my vibe on the
second hand market.

Yeah, and out of my price range! :-) I already blew my budget on my AHH.

I forgot to mention that the picture that I linked is about four years old
and there were a few changes... I long ago replaced the stock 105 crankset
[what a stupid choice on Trek's part!] with a compact triple (22-42), and
an XT f-der, so that issue probably wouldn't matter. Which f-der did you
end up with to avoid the compatibility issue?

Another issue that I saw mentioned on the rivbike site is that the seattube
diameter might be different, requiring a different seatpost, but that's
relatively inexpensive (or, at least, it can be).

Do you have a link with instructions on how to map between dissimilar
geometries? Did Grant post that somewhere? In the list archives perhaps?
I'm quite familiar with my sizing needs with traditional geometry frames,
but not so well versed in sloping TT frames.

That's what I was thinking. Not much, but probably just enough to cover
parts and shipping, leaving me with just the frame price as the upgrade
cost.

I used the Campy Triple that Riv sells (on Sale right now!), on a Hillborne

The Hunqa takes a 27.2 seatpost

Grant's frame drawing tutorial was probably archived by somebody. It was

Hello Folks,

Thanks for the discussion on selling a bike. It was informative. After a
discussion with the wife , I am selling my Quickbeam. I am selling it for the
price I purchased it from John on this forum at $1200. I thought I would give
the forum first crack before I put it on Ebay. If it is not sold by Sunday
evening, it is going on Ebay. The bike is in great condition, barely ridden,
and the pictures show. I am in Monterey, CA for local pickup. I will ship it
out anywhere in US for actual cost of box, shipping, etc, which I am estimating
at $120. In person, I will accept cash, USPS money order, but no personal
check. If through mail, I will accept Paypal, USPS money order, but no personal
check (If you send a money order, I will ship the bike when payment is
received.) Below if a list of components and a link for pictures. If you want
any additional pictures let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread René Sterental
When I built my original Bombadil, I used mountain bike drivetrain
components exclusively. Front external BB with RaceFace cranks and XT front
derailer with no issues at all. A MTB FD may not work with road/touring
cranks, but if you stick to a MTB crankset and 22/32/44 chainrigns, it
should be fully compatible although your high gearing will not be as high.

Here's a photo: http://tinyurl.com/7hxya6f
My Hunqapillar has the Sugino triple crankset that RBW sells with (I
believe) the Micro FD they were selling at the time since they were out of
the Campagnolo. I bought a spare Campagnolo tripple FD on the sale but when
I got it, it was marked as 10speed. I'm guessing they are fully compatilbe
with 9 speeds, but I'll have to check with them.

I guess you also left the Atlantis out of consideration due to its cost,
right? As a hefty rider, I can tell you that the Hunqapillar is wonderful
to ride loaded. Right now it's my default option for heavy loaded rides
such as S24Os.

Go for the Hunqapillar, you won't regret it.

Some Hunqapillars take 26.8 posts; mine does. I believe some may take the
27.2. My Betty was supposed to use the 26.8 but it slipped too much as soon
as the bolt was loosened so I'm using a 27.2 instead; a bit of a tight fit
but much better.

[RBW] Re: Trail Recommendation Database?

2012-01-04 Thread TSW
That might work- use searchable terms in the body of the post, and
something descriptive and easy to sort in the Subject line:

Subject: Trail Database: [location, state, approx mileage]

e.g.,

Subject: Trail Database: Berkeley, CA, 12 miles

Then a fuller description and links in the body.

BTW, one of our local clubs uses this shorthand for describe rides:

[RBW] FS: Ibex Medium wool/plastic mix sports vest, $35 shipped CONUS

2012-01-04 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Once again it's a Medium and it is very nice with zip up neck and
drawstring waist but a wee bit too small for me with a six footer's torso
and size 17 neck.

The body is of wool but it has stretchable plastic wind panels. Mostly red,
some black.

Well used but still very usable and presentable. Note this: I think it is
*not*, repeat *not* cycling specific since it is not cut long in back like
my other cycling vests. This hasn't kept me from using it for several
seasons but it will work better for someone a bit lighter than I at 170, an
inch or two shorter and with a size 15 to 16 neck.

Photos upon request (to the serious inquirer only. No levity allowed).

I just got a nice replacement as a gift.

[RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread Roger
I saw a 2008 Trek Catalog that shows geometries on the next to last
page. The 62cm Hunqa (largest size) is indeed a larger bike than a 25"
Trek, but the 64cm Bombadil is more similar in size to your 67cm Homer
and especially closer to the 69cm Homer you considered.
http://www.trekbikes.com/pdf/2008/catalog/road/road_en.pdf

By the way, beautiful color on the Homer! What's that shade called? I
notice in your photos that you have racks front and back now on your
Homer. Have you ever tried it fully loaded? I'd be curious how well it
would compare to the 520.

Yeah... too bad the Bombadil is more expensive. :-) Actually, I noticed
that the SH isn't cheaper than the Hunqa in the larger sizes, so that
factor is removed from the equation. Maybe I should just keep my eye out
for a used 64 cm Bombadil frame...

Looking at the link that you sent (thanks), it looks like the effective
height of the top headset bearing would be almost 6 cm higher, which would
be a HUGE improvement, especially when combined with a threaded stem for
adjustability and a Nitto Technomic!

> By the way, beautiful color on the Homer! What's that shade called?

Thanks. I fretted over the color for 2 months while waiting to receive it,
and still fret now and then wondering if I could have found a better color.
:-) It's 5031, Phantom Grey Metallic. I think that it works well with the
shiny bits, a good complement to the chrome/polished aluminum.

To be honest, I haven't actually carried much on the front rack, and my
loads have been just commuting loads in the rear panniers.
An occasional jacket/sweater, my light bar, etc is all that I've carried
on the front... I mostly like the fact that it stabilizes the front fender
so that it doesn't rattle nor sway and rub the tire! :-)

Re: [RBW] Re: Trail Recommendation Database?

When I lived in Berkeley, my favorite mixed-terrain route was to take
the seaview trail from Inspiration Point up to Grizzly Peak. The
on-road parts of the ride varied, but it was typical to go up Spruce
and come down Claremont or Tunnel. No Rivendells back then, so I did
it on a 700c hybrid Miyata.

[RBW] "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?"

2012-01-04 Thread James Warren

I was just riding my Rivendell home from work, climbing a big hill, doing fine,
when suddenly this truck intentionally blew by me, inches away from making
contact. I could tell they did it intentionally. They swerved over to come
close to me, and then swerved back into the center of the lane. I really wanted
to see their license plate number, but they were driving at a high speed (also
intentionally unsafe).

I climbed the rest of the hill thinking about it, and it was just another
reminder that all of us reading this are on the same side in the grand scheme
of things. Let's continue to presume that others have good will towards us when
we discuss the details in cycling.

Be safe,

I haven't measured it, but I did buy it new, and it feels and looks about
the same as other bikes that I have measured which I know to be ~62 cm. Now
you've got me wondering... I'll measure it tonight, but perhaps it looks
small because of the uncut steerer with extension and the long seatpost
extension? It could also be an illusion... when I look at my AHH the
headtube looks short to me, but when I measure it it's within a centimeter
of the length of the headtube on my old Schwinn, yet the Schwinn looked
insanely long, which I think had to do with the color and the fact that it
used traditional diameter tubing for the downtube, but the Trek and AHH
both use oversized tubing for the downtube.

[RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread Bill Carter
Rex,
I watch the old Treks on ebay pretty closely, and I think your plan
makes great sense economically. The 520s with tig welded frames like
yours are very popular, sell quickly, and I am always amazed that
framesets in general seem to sell pretty close in price to fully built
bikes. I checked my saved list and saw two built up bikes that
recently sold, one for $785 and another for $520. The $785 bike had
very low miles (300-400) on it. Yours looks to be a very nice color
and well cared for, so I would say you shold be able to sell the frame/
fork with bottom bracket and headset for somewhere in the $350 - $450
range. If you can hold off til early spring when the itch to ride
kicks in, you may be able to do a bit better. I see no reason that
most of your parts could not be reused on a new Riv frame. Good luck,
and let us know how it works out.

[RBW] Re: "Half-step + granny" gearing...

2012-01-04 Thread rob markwardt
I've got a couple half-step bikes and find that I rarely use the "half-
step". Usually the "full step" is quite sufficient, however, there
are times when just a little bit higher or lower gearing is a nice
option...especially on long, undulating rides. I can't imagine
shifting through the whole range using all the half-steps...kind of
like pretending to be a semi-truck driverr, shift, r,
shift, rr shift, etc. etc. etc. (might try it this evening!!).

[RBW] Rebate Reflex

2012-01-04 Thread Peter Pesce
I'd feel a bit bad using my rebate for sale things too. I put in a small order
pre-sale, and two more in-sale, so I guess I'm doing my bit to help. I'll save
the rebate to ease the pain of returning to full-price shopping next week!

I'm glad Riv is distilling their product line. I've recently felt they were
spread a little thin, but I sure hope they don't need to embrace the full
compliment of retail gimmicks to keep afloat. They have always offered good
stuff at fair prices, and one would hope that's always good enough.

[RBW] Re: "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?"

2012-01-04 Thread Bill Carter
Jim,
I believe we all have had similar experiences. A recent law was
passed here in Georgia that requires motorists to give cyclists at
least three feet clearance, but it remains to be seen whether the
police will actually enforce it, and publicity to educate the motoring
public about the new law has been sorely lacking. I was once buzzed
on an uphill by a huge black SUV, and I moved over toward the center
of the lane thinking that might dissuade the next idiot from trying
the same stunt. Well, a sheriff's car pulled me over to lecture me
for not riding far enough to the right. I was tempted to ask him how
many cars he had pulled over in his career for buzzing cyclists too
close, but I figured arguing with the long arm of the law might not be
a good idea. Thanks for the reminder to "be careful out there," and
to be respectful of others on the forum because life's just too
short.

I felt guilty about buying anything that was on sale, actually. But,
there were some things that I'd have waited on to buy later, that the sale
goaded me into spending a bit now (which is when they needed it).

I really liked the khaki, but not as keen on the nylon bits as the

olive color so much...I'd kept hoping that, once I'm ready to buy 'em,
that they might have khaki&leather ones available. When I saw the V ones
on sale, though, I wish I could have gone ahead and bought 'em to set aside
until I needed them, but, it wasn't really an ideal time for me to buy
them. SO... when they sold out, I didn't feel guilty for not buying them.
Same w/ the Bullmoose. I'm still stunned it was on the cut list. I
can see thinning color selections, etc., but, the Bullmoose... it seems as
if the Hunqa and the Bomba have lost a keen option...

But, Riv has to do what it has to do

Good to know... that's one thing that I'm constantly telling people of when

that building up a bike from parts is MUCH more expensive than a pre-built

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Both my Mark's Racks (on the AHH
and the Betty) have 2 bolts on the flat section that holds the rack in the
middle and goes into the brake hole in the fork crown. I use one of these
to stabilize the front of the fender. Has anything changed recently?

Not with the stock brakes. Just not gonna happen. I think the flyer
is overly optimistic. SKS allow for more wiggle room than metal,
maybe. But not much

For me, the limitations worked with the design of the bicycle. While
the Rom/Ram shines with 35s on mixed terrain rides, it was designed
around those middle-reach brakes. It think the bike really shines with
28s. This was when the Atlantis was the Atlantis, and the Saluki was
pulling country bike duty, and the Rom/Ram were versatile"road"
bikes. This was before all bikes did all things.

So, I'd say if you want fat tires and fenders, spring for an AHH.
Ride the Romulus as the classic road bike it is.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom

2012-01-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I ran 32 Paselas without fenders for some most-excellent trail riding, and
35s would've worked, too. But not with fenders. You'll inevitably face
various versions of tire rub, and particle-trapping under the fork.

I did do a bodge of cut SKS fenders over the 32s for a while: fenders in
front and behind the fork and seatstay bridge, no fender material actually
under either. It successfully kept some water off bike-and-body, but it
wasn't pretty.

[RBW] Re: Fender Frustration

2012-01-04 Thread Esteban
One thing the Hetre has done is create a lot of noises and tight
clearances for the the 650B denizens whose Kogswells, Ebisus, and
Rivendells were spec'd for around 37mm - which was all that was
available about 2007.

I agree with Ryan - after riding the Lierres, if you want supple
casing and a fast, light ride, just get that tire and save yourself
the headache. Hetres are great tires. But they require a lot of
frame-design fidgeting with fenders that not even most custom builders
can pull off cleanly. Or you get the gaping yaw of the Rawland.

Here's the Protovelo with comfortable clearances with Lierres:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671211@N02/6592022665/in/photostream

Hetres were fun, but a royal pain and best abandoned.

[RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom

2012-01-04 Thread Esteban
On a brevet I would choose the Challenge Parigi-Roubaix at 27mm.
Plenty of comfort, and a damn fast tire. Maybe more quality control
than the GB, although I haven't been paying attention to that
discussion much (or any internet bikeyness for that matter) lately.
Paselas work great, but the 28s can be a bit rigid. Especially with
TG. I have 28mm Continental Ultra Sports on my Riv Road and those are
surprisingly comfortable.

I'd go with the Challenges, though. Those with the 45mm Honjos would
give you plenty of clearance (I would guess), functionality, and
style.

Good luck on the randonee!
