Who knows, maybe you'll have to get a second set of Boscos for the
Hilsen.

Rene, I really like the looks of those on the Hunqapillar. I'll be
curious to hear back from you and others after more miles on the bars.

Patrick, I am in your fare city visiting me wee mum. I am also preparing for
Ride the Rockies. So at 6am I left Four Hills and climbed up to Sandia Crest.
It was a lovely morning, just under 60 miles RT, with headwinds both ways at
times. The smoke had mixed out significantly by 11. The Riv road was great as
usual except for shiverinduced shimmy starting down from the top.

[RBW] Re: Bosco Rubbe Nubar on my Hunqapillar... first test

2012-05-25 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
I'm most curious about the forward "aero" position. Good to hear you like
it, Rene. A 58 Bocso bar is on it's way for my Big Dummy. Currently I have
Alba-bars on the BD and use the forward position as much as the regular
position. I want to try the Boscos to get the normal position a little
closer to me but hope to retain some sort of regular use aero/power
position. Among other things (like taking the family
camping- if the alba-bars aren't obvious enough,
look for the bike with the
American flag... that's us. Also, a keen observer will see the wife's Betty
Foy in the video.) the BD is my grocery getter and my house is uphill from
the grocery store... i.e. coast down empty and pedal up with a load.

Assuming the Bosco works out on the BigD, the Albas will go on the Hilsen.

[RBW] New Tire Trial: Rubena V66 Flash APS

2012-05-25 Thread b hamon
For the last few weeks I've been trying out a new city/commuting tire: Rubena's
V-66 Flash APS ("Anti-Puncture System"), 26 x 1.75.It is vaguely similar in
look and tread pattern to the old-style Schwalbe Marathon (before they changed
both their tread and their compound this last year). It also costs about half
of what the Marathon retails for. Having ridden the 1.75 for awhile now I may
be inclined to go down to the narrower 1.5 just to see if there's a noticable
difference in ride feel. It certainly doesn't feel as sluggish as the newer
version of the standard Marathon and so far I haven't had any flats.
Given the choice in terms of ride quality and wear, the Rubena seems to be a
decent tire for the money and I think I'd opt for it over the Marathon.
http://www.rubenatires.com/v66-flash/
I haven't talked with anyone who's running these in 700c yet but if anyone is
and wants to chime in, feel free.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bosco Rubbe Nubar on my Hunqapillar... first test

2012-05-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I have to admit that 10 steady miles on the hooks, despite the
now-higher bar (3 cm below saddle, up from 4-5) and shallow drop (125
mm) required willpower. 7 is fine, by 8 I am getting a little
restless, but I wanted to see if I could do the whole distance without
getting up. Silly, I guess, but around here, the hooks are like
shifting gears into a wind. Heck, way back when I was in my late 30s I
had my bars 5 (five) inches (inches) below saddle -- pure ignorance
about how to set up a bike. But at 57 I am a lot stiffer than I was.

[RBW] Re: Bosco Rubbe Nubar on my Hunqapillar... first test

2012-05-25 Thread René Sterental
I'm sure the ability to hold that position for 10 miles is completely up to
the rider's flexibility. I know I probably couldn't, but if you like riding
in the drops and having the handlebar lower than your saddle, you could do
it. There is plenty of support for the arms and hands in this position,
whereas I cannot find an equivalent option on the Bullmoose bars or on the
Albatross bar. I'm sure others might differ and I just wanted to highlight
this option on these new bars.

I agree with you that bending forward produces more power. My body
naturally wants to do that as I ride harder. It's just that my neck,
shoulder and hands complain loudly so I'm trying to find comfort over speed
so I can continue to ride.

[RBW] Cool knobbly tires at BG

I was looking over at the Bruce Gordon site, and saws that he has Rock 'n

700c rims, especially when they're made by Panaracer.

Re: [RBW] Bosco Rubbe Nubar on my Hunqapillar... first test

2012-05-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I'm curious how this sort of setup works in strong, steady headwinds.
You mention being able to rest your elbows on the grips while grasping
the flat. Does this work for 10 miles or more at a stretch?

It's odd, but I find that when I sit up straight, I lose power. I am
sure others find things different -- I remember with, well, not so
much humiliation as humility, how a young guy, sitting bolt upright on
a cheap hybrid, caught up with me riding strenuously in the hooks and
cheerfully yelled out, "Howzit going?" before passing me. But I can
feel extra power even moving from the hoods to the hooks and find that
when I hold the ramps or the flats, I tend to bog if there is any
resistance from air or hill. Perhaps its a mashing versus spinning
thing?

Re: [RBW] Custom Hampsten / Independent Fabrication rando bike for sale

Here is what DB has to say about his HBS (from the web):

"There was a time when we took our road bikes everywhere, in all
seasons. Our frames
and forks came ready with braze-ons for fenders as well as plenty of
clearance to
accommodate more rubber. We’d swap out wheels, mount fenders, and
ride all week to
school, train in wet weather, and ramble unpaved lanes and across
fields---then we’d pare
down, put on our best sew-up skinnies, and head for the weekend races.
 We had one bike
that could really do it all, smartly designed for versatility and as
uncompromising on
trails as it was at races.
Times have changed and I’m lucky enough to have more than one bike. I love my
dedicated race bike but it’s not well-suited for paths, gravel roads,
or even long easy days
at half-speed on fat tires. Over the past few years I’ve thought a
lot about the kind of
bike I could ride on my fastest days with friends who love to hammer
and climb but
would also be right with fenders and a larger tire. Have I taken up a
quixotic dream? Am
I lost in mere nostalgia? It’s hard to describe the relief and the
joy I felt when first saw I
Hampsten Cycles’ Strada Bianca. It felt like comin’ home. This was
exactly what I was
looking for.
Here was a bike designed to express the passions of one of racing’s
modern greats, Andy
Hampsten who had raced and won in unimaginably bad conditions and who’d never
settle for a bike that didn’t perform. But this was no toss at
nostalgia or retro styling.
The Strada Bianca is up to date in materials and construction,
offering options that could
take it down either traditional or contemporary lines of design, all
custom, and sensibly
priced. In steel, titanium, or even aluminum, the Strada Bianca is
the go-anywhere, haveit-your-way answer that brings modern cycling
back to its best roots: a true road bike that
won’t keep you from the fast group and yet is designed for comfort and
versatility over
rough roads and long days in the saddle.
My own HC SB is titanium, wears a threadless carbon fork designed for
standard reach
(57mm) caliper brakes, and mounts fenders in only a few minutes. I
took it to Europe
last summer to ride with a fast group over a Tour de France stage,
using race wheels and
skinny tires. This winter I’ve been riding with fat tires and fenders
on the wet, gravelstrewn roads of the beautiful Finger Lakes of
western New York. The only thing still
holding me back is me but the bike, the bike is everything I have ever
hoped it could be,
and honestly better than the bikes I remember as a kid. The design,
the performance, and
the remarkable versatility without compromise make the Strada Bianca a
distinctive and
astonishingly fun ride. There aren’t many contemporary bikes
conceived to perform with
so many kinds of cycling in mind. The Strada Bianca may be Hampsten
Cycles’ most
remarkable contribution to date and, as far as I can tell, the future
looks bright.

Re: [RBW] Custom Hampsten / Independent Fabrication rando bike for sale

2012-05-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That is a lovely bike -- I'd be very tempted except for two fortunate
(for me) barriers: it's too big and I don't have any money. But I'd
love what is basically a stage racer that takes fenders. My Herse fit
wonderfully but was a tank and I didn't like the handling (which
wasn't bad -- the only low trail bike of two that I didn't mind -- but
I prefer Riv's handling. From what I've just read about the Strada
Bianca, your bike ought to handle very nicely, like an old fashion
stage racer. I note that Douglas Brooks loves his (if you don't know
DB, his opinions carry some weight with the periti).

Yours is steel, not titanium? If the latter, wow, even better.

All this to say: Man, if I had one in my size, it would remain on my
very short "keep it!" list right up there with the custom Rivs.

[RBW] Bosco Rubbe Nubar on my Hunqapillar... first test

2012-05-25 Thread René Sterental
I took delivery of the new Bosco Rubbe Bullmoose bar today and proceeded to
install it on my Hunqapillar. *http://tinyurl.com/7bmmkfl*
*
*
Initial impressions:
- They are beautiful. I love the Bullmoose configuration and while it
restricts further adjustments except for height, I believe it's an optimal
position and are very happy to trade off the ability to rotate the bar for
the added stiffness and beauty.
- They have a lot of rise and a fairly short quill. I have inserted them
fully, leaving just a tiny gap so they don't rub on the top of the headset
and on the Hunqapillar at least, I don't think I need them any higher at
all. After more rides I'll be able to tell whether they are more
comfortable for me than the Bullmoose bars I had, but I don't think their
height will change.
- Upright position is a bit "surprising" to my body. Can't tell for sure
after just riding them in the street in front of my house for a short
while, but it seems my back is more relaxed, there is less pressure on my
hands and I can slide them forward and backwards easily. Can't say for sure
about hand or neck pain yet.
- Versatile hand positioning. I installed the leather grips I had on the
Bullmoose bars and while these are more suitable to keep the hands on a
single spot, the bar configuration allows me to easily slide them forward
while still having plenty of flat section to adjust to the speed I'm
riding. Additionally, if I want to get "aereo" or if there is a strong
headwind, I can comfortably place my hands on the front flat section while
having the grips support my elbows for a very confident position. My
initial impression is that they are much more comfortable and versatile
(for me) than the Albatross bars I tried a while back and ended up selling.
- They are wide. This means that I'm not poking myself on the ends of the
bar when making tight turns, getting off the bike, etc. I'm big and I fit
very comfortably inside the bars. It takes a while to get used to maneuver
the bike with the hands behind the line of the head tube but it's not a big
deal.
- Not surprisingly, I had to adjust the tilt of my saddle to support the
more upright position, which means there is more weight on my butt.
- Need to lengthen the brake cable/housing for the front brake but it will
work for now.

Over the long weekend I'll do some longer rides and cruise around Palo Alto
to form a better opinion.

Happy Memorial Weekend!

René

[RBW] Custom Hampsten / Independent Fabrication rando bike for sale

2012-05-25 Thread Blindrobert
I had this bike custom built and simply haven't ridden it. It has less
than 50 miles on it. Here are the details:

Custom Strada Bianca road bike designed by Hampsten Cycles (Andy
Hampsten was the first American to win the Giro, as many of you
probably know.) and built by Independent Fabrication. Designed for
randonneuring - fast paced, comfortable, long distance riding. Great
for club rides or exploring or just riding around - this bike does it
all.

The details:

Steel tubing mix of True Temper and Reynolds 853

Seat tube: 61.5cm (center to center), 63.0cm (center to top)
Top tube: 58.5cm (center to center)
Chain stays: 42.5cm
Rear spacing 130mm (road bike standard)
30mm headtube extension for a more comfortable, upright riding
position
Custom steel fork with threadless steel steer tube (tube has been left
long so you can adjust it down to fit you)

Fully built with premium components including:
Ritchey WCS bar and Thomson stem
Chris King pewter color threadless headset
Thomson Elite seat post
Black Brooks Team Pro saddle with hammered copper rivets
Dura ace brake/shift levers (10 speed)
10 speed rear cassette (I think it's a SRAM)
Shimano compact double front crank with oversize outboard bearing
bottom bracket
Dura Ace 10 speed rear derailleur
FSA front derailleur (more reliable than Shimano for the compact
crank)
Phil Wood front and rear hubs (rear takes shimano compatible
cassettes), 36 spokes laced 3-cross to Mavic Open Sport rims (I know -
you are thinking Open Pro's are better, but the Open Sport is a little
bit wider which allows you to ride a fatter, more comfortable, tire.
Honjo polished stainless fenders attached with Sheldon's fender nuts
for easy removal on fast, dry days.
Tektro long reach brakes go around the fenders and also allow for
fatter tires!
Brand new Rivendell Ruffy-Tuffy 28mm tires fit under the fenders with
tons of clearance
Black Velox bar plugs
Black cork bar tape tied off with black hemp twine
Cateye Mity8 computer, tells you all the important stuff
No pedals
2 silver Ciussi stainless steel bottle cages

This is a first-rate bicycle in every respect. I simply have too many
and my house is small. This bike is perfect for fast paced club rides
or long distance rides, it will excel on pavement, cinder tracks, bike
paths, rail-to-trails, or simply riding around town or campus. There
are braze on's for fenders and two water bottles. The intention was to
use a classic randonneuring saddle bag like the Carradice Nelson with
a bagman support. I was going for a classic fit so the size is a
little large and was intended to show just a fistfull of seatpost
(think Rivendell meets Indy Fab). Bike is in amazing condition showing
little to no wear, it should last a lifetime. It will fit 28mm tires
with the fenders and 32 or 35mm tires without fenders. This is a great
bike and I'd like to find it a good home.

Charcoal metallic with cream filled windows on the lugged fork. Frame
is TIG welded in the ultra-clean IF style.

Offered at $3000, I have over $5K into this bike - the price is a
steal, but reasonable offers will be politely considered: I promise
not to be offended if you promise not to get upset if I decline.
Recent pictures can be seen here:

Thanks for looking, keep the rubber side down!

Damn, I was very interested in trying these but balked at the $45 list
price. Now I am waiting for a replacement hollow axle from Jim at
Hiawatha to use with a QR or allen bolts.

If you'd care to trade for something, I'd still like to try them --
have a long-standing question whether good wingnuts and washers can
hold a fixed wheel in place without a chain tensioner - a question
that has much exercised many, mostly "contra," on the CR list.

If interested, I have: a few lighting bits, single pivots, a couple of
Turbo saddles, and other things I can't now remember ... LMK.

Re: [RBW] 650C Tire question: Michelin Pro 3 Race versus Conti GP 4000 versus Conti GP Triathlon; others?

2012-05-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've been intrigued, especially as at least twice I've had the chance
to get 650C tubular wheels cheaply from my brother who wheels and
deals in bicycle esoterica and exoterica in LA. But I've hesitated for
two reasons: first that with our goatheads -- a flat a ride is normal
on pavement -- I wonder if they are practical; and second, if the
number of decent 571 wired-ons is small, that for 571 tubulars must be
minuscule.

Others have said that the better sealants are far better than Slime;
perhaps that is the middle term here? If my brother ever comes across
another pair of 571 tubular wheels, I may just give them a try.

If I ever get a new custom gofast, it will probably have 700C wheels.

[RBW] Winds, head and tail; cadence, slow; hooks, good.

2012-05-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
A hardly epic 30 miler today, tho' the first 10 was broken up by
finding with a flat at mile four that I had forgotten to re-attach my
frame pump to the frame -- I begged a loan and got to try a very nice
Lezyne -- well, not sure what to call it: let's say a miniature and
better made version of the Topeak Road Morph. Not bad at all, tho' too
big for my Banana Bag, so might as well stick with my PB Roadie,
better than Zefal, IMO. At any rate, after fixing the flat, I returned
home to pick up the pump and the resumed my ride.

Anyway. Even though the steady 35 gusts to 50 winds with smoke from
distant wildfires haven't occurred, the wind was still directly ahead,
SSW, at 28, so I spent 14 miles or more in the hooks pushing the 72"
gear into it. Nothing worth photographing, tho' the bosque trail is
pretty and pretty green, relatively speaking, at this time of year;
but I did get a brief glance at a wild mother duck and four or five
ducklings daringly doing a commando advance through the sparse ground
cover from an acequia on the east of the path to the River on the
west. Various large birds, probably geese and ducks, cast shadows
ahead of my front wheel as they flew back and forth. Low 80s -- very
mild and pleasant, tho' humidity was somewhat high at 10%. (I'm
kidding, OK?)

Odd: perhaps it's just age, but I find it easier on my lungs to push
that 72" gear at 70 rpm against a headwind than to spin it at much
over 90 with a brisk tailwind. The received wisdom that riding fixed
helps your spin hasn't been true for me; it's made me a masher. I used
to spin at well over 100 to routinely maintain over 20 a 65" gear (I
was younger and fitter then, of course, but 42/17 X26.5 or 36X14 X 25
were my preferred cruising gears. Now 80 in the 72" is comfortable.

Of course, this left me with no remedy when some young 30- or 40-
somethings passed me and dropped me like a brick: like trying to
accelerate a tractor engine. Oh well, it is good to learn, as you age,
that the flesh availeth nothing. My attempts to speed up were half
hearted and brief. (The secret must be carbon fiber ...)

Oh, and the green Curt fixie felt wonderful, as usual.

It's a good thing I'm well-stocked with RBW T-shirts of various

I'm interested in seeing how long a stem I need to accommodate the

truncate the bar. I won't be using bar-end shifters... either stem or SOS.
I'll start with an 10cm or 11cm stem, one of which I have available. (I'm
happy with an 11cm or 10cm with my Albatross bar.) While I understand the
Bosco comes back further than the Albatross, it's also true that I'll sink
the stem more due to the massive rise of the Bosco, so the position that
the Bosco comes back *from* will be slightly farther forward. I haven't
done the figurin' so I don't know how much mitigation that'll provide. I'd

bought a shirt even though I don't own the bars (or the bike). It's an
American Apparel SS shirt in a mossy green and it says Bosco Rubbe Junior
College est 1994. Call Riv up and ask them to sell you one.

pain though, haha. But the most exerting exercise I remember was the duck
walk where you obvioulsy squat down and walk like a duck but you have to
hold you ankles while you do it, man everthing burned after a minute or
two, havent been in that good of shape in at least 10 years as my wife is
fond of reminding me :)

[RBW] Price Reduced - FS: 58 Blue Rambouillet, Now $1300 Shipped

2012-05-25 Thread Tim Whalen
Some nibbles but no bites so I've cut the price to $1300. Thanks for
looking, Tim

Hi all, after normal bike selling indecision and second guessing am putting
this Rambouillet up for sale.

I bought this from the original owner, another list member, but have ended
up only riding my Roadeo. I will email you detailed pics if you are
interested. Professionally packing and shipping included in the price.

Mostly Ultegra build with details listed below. Many new parts as noted,
rest have normal wear but are fully functional and good for many more
miles.

Ultegra triple crank, 172.5 mm, 48, 42, 28, with Shimano middle ring and
unknown but good inner and outer chainrings
Ultegra front and rear Derailleurs
Shimano HG 27-12 9 speed cassette
Suntour bar end shifters
Wheels are Ultegra hubs with 32 spoke Open Pro rims and new Jack Brown
Green tires - true and fast, I love them
Nitto 65 seatpost
Nitto Noodles, 46 cm
Nitto Technomic 5 cm stem
Shimano brake levers with Tektro cross levers
New SR Respiro saddle
New SKS fenders
MKS GR9 pedals and half toe clips
New bar tape with gel pads underneath
I don't know what kind the brakes are, seems to me they are an IRD
predecessor I got from Rivendell some years back. They work great.
Original Harris Cyclery decal.

Paint is very good with a couple of minor chips/scratches and a small chain
suck scrape that I can see. The one flaw this bike has is a shallow dimple
in the right side of the top tube. It came to the original owner that way
and is a minor cosmetic flaw with no impact on the integrity of the tube.
Detailed close ups available.

Great riding highly versatile bike, as you already know.

[RBW] Re: Just Ride it!

2012-05-25 Thread Philip Williamson
This place was famous for having been built on the third base position of a
demolished ballpark?
"Juicy Lucy" sounds about right, though. I took a picture of the burger,
but it was too pornographic to post anywhere. I do think it was in
Minneapolis, not St. Paul, and we did go there with a native guide.
I do have a non-offensive picture of Mickey's Dining Car to share, though:
