[RBW] FS: Specialized Tahoe shoes

2012-09-11 Thread Gino Zahnd
Size 10 / 43. They look like these:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/32253363@N07/4459200469/lightbox/

They are very lightly used, I'd say a 9 of 10 condition.

Name a fair price, meet me either in the city near the ballpark, or Mill
Valley, and they're yours.

They're super comfortable, great for touring/hiking/walking around town. I'm
just downsizing the gear closet.

[RBW] Re: Grant at College Park Bikes - DC metro area

2012-09-11 Thread Joe K
I won't be going, but just wanted to mention that College Park has a
long history with classic steel bicycles. About 10 years there, I
made a side trip to see them while I was in Baltimore for work. I
also know they had a devastating incident some years ago (fire?
theft?) that seriously reduced their inventory. One thing I remember
is lots of beautiful frames hanging around the shop.

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2012-09-11 Thread BSWP
I think the Grip Kings are the ugliest pieces of kit that RBW sells. Clunky
and strangely-shaped. And they don't even come standard with the requisite
set screws, which are needed to hold your shoes in place.

On the other hand, the VP Gripsters are fantastic. Thin, light,
pre-installed (with threadlocker!) set screws, I'm really liking them on
the fixed-gear QuickBeam.

[RBW] Re: Ride for the Friendship

2012-09-11 Thread dougP
Good topic, Manny. Got me to thinking that most of the people I
consider good friends are also biking buddies. Longer rides &
especially multi-day rides really reveal a person's true nature. The
rider that's there to help you fix flat in the rain at dusk or share
that last sandwich is the real deal. Those are people you can count
on, and who make rides & trips such enjoyable experiences.

I have a friend in Mesilla, the adobe side of Las Cruces, that has an Atlantis.
He rides often on Snow Road, Shalem Colony, to the airport and beyond, and some
of the valley ditch banks.

Las Cruces is my previous hometown. Nowadays I am in Grand Junction CO where I
have heard there are a couple of Quickbeams and an Atlantis, but I have yet to
see them out and about. This probably says more about me and my chosen
lifestyle/solo riding than them. I have an AllRounder, Road custom, Quickbeam,
and Legolas.

I recently rode Ride the Rockies with 1999 other riders, and there were exactly
zero Rivendells on that ride. I had two grey haired men tell me they had one at
home, but they didn't want to ride heavy steel on such a demanding ride. I
thought buying into Rivendell philosophy, literally, would eliminate such
unintelligent thinking. My Riv Road was the perfect bike for 6 long days in the
saddle: it took 33mm tires for the rough roads and ~15 miles of dirt, it was
stable, predictable, comfortable.

2012-09-11 Thread Mojo
I have a friend in Mesilla, the adobe side of Las Cruces, that has an
Atlantis. He rides often on Snow Road, Shalem Colony, to the airport and
beyond, and some of the valley ditch banks.

Las Cruces is my previous hometown. Nowadays I am in Grand Junction CO
where I have heard there are a couple of Quickbeams and an Atlantis, but I
have yet to see them out and about. This probably says more about me and my
chosen lifestyle/solo riding than them. I have an AllRounder, Road custom,
Quickbeam, and Legolas.

I recently rode Ride the Rockies with 1999 other riders, and there were
exactly zero Rivendells on that ride. I had two grey haired men tell me
they had one at home, but they didn't want to ride heavy steel on such a
demanding ride. I thought buying into Rivendell philosophy, literally,
would eliminate such unintelligent thinking. My Riv Road was the perfect
bike for 6 long days in the saddle: it took 33mm tires for the rough roads
and ~15 miles of dirt, it was stable, predictable, comfortable.

Yes, I'm planning to try something similar with 1/4-inch minicell foam -
can get a 2' square sheet for about $5. It will also also insulate it if I
want to keep something cool. But also interested in improving the

course good for the cell phone.

But I also sent an e-mail to Spencer with my original question. He always

[RBW] Re: Rivs by city

2012-09-11 Thread peech1...@yahoo.com
A couple of weeks ago my wife Kae and I brought my Sam Hillborne and her
Betty Foy to the Cities, about a 3 hour drive up the river. What a great
trail system and what a great city! We got lost several times but were
having so much fun enjoying the weather and the town from our bikes that it
really didn't matter if we were lost. We're quite the couple riding
together with our Rivendells.
Riding along out of Lake Calhoun on the Midtown Greenway a gentleman
recognized our bikes and shouted out RIVENDELL as we rode by. Kae and I
both love our bikes and are always pleased when someone recognizes them for
the beautiful machines they are.

[RBW] Re: Tubing Thicknesses on Rivs

2012-09-11 Thread Johan Larsson
It gets me a little worried that these misconceptions about bicycle tubing
can spread even more... I'd like to add to your explanation Bill M., with
something from this ironworker rebar bending perspective, the one that got
Grant confused. If a man bending rebar can steer someone away from facts,
common knowledge and engineering fundamentals, maybe another steelbender
can get him onto track again?

If you put a piece of rebar in a vise, lets say you have three feet of it
sticking straight up, and start to bend it you will notice it's quite
flexible and springy. If you bend it a little and then let go, it springs
back. But how much can you pull it before it doesn't spring all the way
back? You grab the top of the rebar and pull about four inches before you
let go. Ok, it goes back, straight up. Five inches? Six? Nothing. Eight?
No. Darn, this rebar is pretty strong. Ok, you'll just pull until you feel
something happening... and so you start pulling, harder and harder -
digging your front foot down in the dirt, leaning back very slowly and
carefully, more and more, grabbing the end of that rebar with your hands,
and suddenly you feel that it gives a little. You stop, hold it there, and
estimates that the end is about 30 inches out away from the vise. When you
then let go of the rebar, it goes back, but not fully. You see that it has
been bent some. Now you take another piece of rebar, absolutely identical
to the first when just looking at it - same length, exactly the same
diameter, and you put it in the vise in the same way as the first. You
start pulling, using the same grip as when you were bending the first one.
You lean back more and more, slowly, trying to estimate how far you are
pulling it. 20 inches... 25... ok, coming close to the bending point now...
closer... closer... Hmm, what? Haven't I pulled it too much now? Oh yeah,
this must be a little further than where I took the first rebar. So you let
go, and it springs back all the way, straight as an arrow. Now you put the
two rebar rods next to each other in the vise. The first one is bent, but
luckily long enough to be turned upside down and adjusted to the same
length as before, and you make the two rods stand up equally long. And this
is the moment where you finally get some use for your uncles old mining
conveyor belt tension testing device that has gathered dust under the work
bench in the garage for many years! (It's actually just like a heavy-duty
fish scale - a handle in one end, a clamp in the other, and in between a
box with a gauge.) You go get it, and clamp it to the end of the first
rebar. You pull it about 25 inches, since it started to deform at about 30
when you tried it previously, and notice that it takes 23 conveyor belt
units of force to bend it that much. Now you attach it to the second rebar
and bend it 25 inches too. Ok, 23 units here as well. How much does it take
to permanently bend the first piece of rebar? You hook it up and start to
pull. 25 inches... coming close to 30... and yes, there, it gived a little
- it started to deform. The gauge showed 30 when that happened. (For a
second you consider the possibility that units of conveyor belt testing
devices are defined by bending pieces of rebar, but shake the thought
away.) When you then pull the second rebar with 30 units of force, it bends
just as much as the first one, but no sign of giving. So you put some
effort into it - leaning back even further and lowering your butt, thinking
it's a good thing that clamp is of industrial quality. And just as you
think you maybe can't bend it at all, that you might be able to actually
hang from the end of that rebar that now is arched almost like a fishing
rod, then you get that feeling of the iron getting soft, that it gives, and
you can lower yourself all the way until you're sitting on the ground,
pulling the rebar with you. "Whoa", you're thinking, "_that_ was some
strong rebar". You forgot to look at the tension tester device when sitting
down like that, but it doesn't matter actually.

Ok - to sum this up, there clearly was two different kind of rebars
involved. The first, weaker one, was standard quality, the second a higher
grade - stronger. They flexed exactly the same - bent exactly the same for
a given force. It was impossible to notice any difference in the bending,
the springiness and flexing. That is, of course, until the first, weaker
rebar, gave up. It broke at 30 units of force. Not broke as in fell apart,
but it got plastically deformed. It crashed but still kept together, and
did so at 30 units. The second rebar was of a stronger kind of steel - it
could take 30 with no problem, 40 also. It took maybe twice the force to
deform the stronger rebar than needed for the weaker one. Still, again -
the two pieces of rebar flexed just the same up to 29 force units, up until
when the weaker rebar gave. The stronger one continued to flex when loaded
more, u

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2012-09-11 Thread bulldog1935
Riv's MKS Grip King (Lambda) pedals are the best thing since Technomic
quills. I can ride in my Merrell sandals and they stick like glue. They
pedals are the final touch in my upright riding adjustment. I have a
compression injury in my left knee from a car wreck when I was young.
Riding on the ball of my foot on touring pedals limits the load my knee
can take, and can't get too aggressive on climbs - I live in the TX hill
country. With the lambda pedals, I center on my arch and it unloads my
knee. It required sliding my saddle forward almost by same mount - not
quite 2 centimeters. This is combined with M-bars, but I can get as aero
as I'm interested in getting. On my ride yesterday, I was hitting 40 mph
at the bottom of the hills, and when the chase group eased by me, I was
pacing 21 mph.

There are 4 that I know of in Paducah, KY. One is my Hillborne, the other a
Hilsen, another Hillborne and a Bleriot.

I see various threads on here about Rivendell's representation in various parts

the Twin Cities.

Back in late 2004 or early 2005 when I bought my first Riv, an Atlantis, I
thought it was pretty unique. Soon after I started riding it, though, I met
lots of Riv riders by pure happenstance. First was a guy who called himself
"Single Speed Steve" on a Quickbeam - we flagged each other down on West River
Road. Some short time later on the light-rail, I saw a guy with a really beat
up Atlantis that had been, apparently, repaired (by Curt Goodrich I later
learned) at least once, which was obvious with the rattlecanned repair areas. I
freaked the guy out, I think, when I started talking to him about his bike. We
later became friends, but I don't think he has the Atlantis anymore. After
awhile, seeing different Rivs in the wild lost its novelty, because it became
at least a weekly occurrence. Now I walk to a nearby food co-op, and frequently
see a green 2TT Hillborne and a QB parked there at the same time, in addition
to some other bikes that clearly have Riv-inspired style. A coffee shop I ride
past daily has an orange Sam parked outside (I know the bike personally, and
it's original owner sometimes appears on this list). Of course, in my day job,
I encounter lots of Rivendells. The Twin Cities, despite having snow and ice on
the ground 11.5 months/year, is quite a bicycle haven, and for whatever reason,
Riv has a strong showing among the more common bicycle brands.
