Re: [RBW] Re: OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks

2012-09-25 Thread Brian Hanson
Have you had problems with handlebars touching or making 3 bikes
unworkable? I read a review that states you can't fit 3 MTB flat-bar bikes
without interference. This one looks like a keeper if I can get at least
2 mtb and 1 road on it?

[RBW] Re: Grant Peterson (Rivendell) book event + ride! 9/23 ~ Naperville, IL

2012-09-25 Thread Eric Peterson
I was at the talk as well. Didn't go on the ride because I had errands to
run (on bike of course). It looked like he had a good turnout for the ride
as well as the talk.

The talk was kind of unpolished and rambling - which I liked.
Some interesting things I found out was that Grant still does intervals.
Very short intervals by his account, but intervals nonetheless.
Also I got the impression that he really likes catching up to and passing
lycra-clad riders while dressed like an unracer.

Give it a little nudge, almost a kick, and it will come around. It may
bump to a stop on your leg. However: don't be too enthusiastic, don't
use too much force, especially with "beartrap" pedals.

And definitely not with beartrap pedals you have, without noticing it,
been honing the teeth every time you make a 180 degree right turn and
every so slightly ground the pedal, the way I did every day for almost
10 years on my commute.

So one day, after ten years of patient, if unknowning honing, I gave
that pedal a mighty kick rather than a gentle nudge, and the pedal came
around with considerable force and BAM! dug those sharpened teeth right
into my leg. I then moved my leg, and the teeth raked down my shin.
That was in 1995. I still have the scars.

[RBW] Re: Help with platform pedals...

2012-09-25 Thread Kelly
Well just as finding the right clipless pedal was important, finding the
right platform pedal is important too. After going to BMX style / size
pedals I've found my sweat spot for my size 13's. The shoe hasn't really
mattered everything from flimsy sandals to dress shoes. That's me.. I too
just lift the pedal up at stop signs with my toe. Only time I really miss
clipless anymore after two years. I never did experience the muscle
fatigue you experienced.

Good luck finding your way...

Note my wife never did finalize the switch.. she rides platforms on tour
but week night club rides she's clipped in.

Not long, but I'm very fast getting into my clipless. Never have to look,
and 99% of the time I hit the engagement on the first try and first stroke.
 Maybe I'm just impatient. :-)

It is a little ironic how important the shoes are to happy clip-free

riding. You still have to match shoe to pedal, to some extent.

How long does it take you? When I get stopped out of position, I just
lift up with a toe, step on it, and I'm off. It's rare I see a
clipless rider take any less time to clip in and get moving.

Re: [RBW] Anyone ride a Riv-ish double crank setup?

With 9 speeds you can even go 12-36 in the back. But you'll need a Shadow
type MTB RD although you can make it work on a non-shadow type by either
reversing or getting a longer B-screw. I've done both on my Rivs.

That should be low enough based on your description.

[RBW] WTB: SlickerSack for platrack

2012-09-25 Thread Adam Kimball
Hi all,

Anyone have one of the discontinued slickersacks that fits on the platrack?
I should have bought one long ago but didn't. Now I can't. If you have
one that you don't use, let me know. I'm interested.

Thanks,
Adam

[RBW] Re: First commute -- Mystery Bike!

2012-09-25 Thread islaysteve
Beautiful bike, glad to hear that you're so happy with it. No doubt,
well-designed but unconventional geometry. I do have an issue with shift
with stick/finger/whatever. Really? How long is that going to last?
Downtube/suicide shifter I could see, if available of course. Just my
opinion, and what do I know? Cheers, Steve

[RBW] Help with platform pedals...

2012-09-25 Thread Rex Kerr
My continuing saga with platform pedals... [question follows long spiel]

As I've stated before, I have been a long time user of Speedplay Frog
clipless pedals, which I had no reason to dislike. That said, the "wear
any shoes and just jump on the bike" argument is quite compelling, so I
decided to give platforms another chance. After so many years I'm finding
them to be more challenging that I expected. :-)

1) Small muscles around the ankles that I'm not accustomed to using get a
workout keeping the food on the pedal -- mostly over that.
2) A bit uncertain feeling on rough descents -- still not over that.
3) Major discomfort, feeling like my foot was rolling off the edge. I
finally figured out that my root problem was the same as that which I
overcame years ago with clipless pedals. My Frogs are all special ordered
with 1/2" longer spindles due to a slightly duck-toed stance. I added some
Specialized BG spindle extenders to my platform pedals and they're MUCH
more comfortable! This alone resolved 90% of my complaints!
4) Pedal strike -- I'm finally retraining myself that I have less clearance
than I'm accustomed to. Sometimes wish I had a little more clearance when
cornering and trying to keep up in traffic.

...and #5... ...the one I write about today...

Starting up again after a stop! I've become accustomed to just stopping
with my feet in whatever position I want. I put my weight on the dominant
leg as I lower myself off the saddle and put my other foot on the ground to
finally stop. Problem is, now I'm in a bad position to restart. If the
light changes quickly I'm unprepared. With clipless I'd just lift my foot
and the crank would follow my foot and be in a good position. Not so easy
with platforms. I guess I could train myself to lower the other foot on
stops, but that seems awkward too, not to mention that the crank ends up at
TDC, which isn't right either.

So, is there some easy technique that I never learned in my childhood years
when I last used platform pedals, or must I just get accustomed to using my
toe to re-position the pedal, regardless of how long that takes?

Thanks!
-Rex

Going from a 27 to a 30 tooth sprocket is a good-sized shift. Going
from a 30 to a 34 is another good-sized shift. So the proposed cassette
change will give you two lower gears, and not piddly little unnoticeable
steps, either, but rather good healthy bites.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ride a Riv-ish double crank setup?

2012-09-25 Thread dougP
Yes, going to a 32 or 34 would be a noticeable change. The caution is
to be aware the RD may not be able to handle it. I was shocked when
my buddy's set-up worked. But nothing lost if it can't handle the
large cog, at that point you change the RD as well.

Changing cranks can get somewhat involved with the bottom brackets
chainline, FD travel, etc. Fortunately, RBWHQ would be able to advise
you on a good workable set-up to meet your needs.

Having bar ends solves a lot of problems. For instance, if you're
fine with friction & see a 9 speed that works for you, that's an
option. You could go to a triple in front with no need to change
shifter. Separate levers are a Major Good Thing.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone ride a Riv-ish double crank setup?

2012-09-25 Thread Dan McNamara
The Sugino is a really beautiful crankset. Pricey but at least it includes
the BB. And it is low Q for those who care.

On my wife's Betty Foy I put a 40/26 + chain ring guard on a used XD2 crank
that I had picked up from someone here. Works great with a wide cassette -
I used the 12-36 HG61.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ride a Riv-ish double crank setup?

2012-09-25 Thread reynoldslugs
Wide Range doubles are the bee's knees, the tops, the Coliseum.

My favorite is the new Sugino, here it is on a Della Santa in 26-40,
witha SRAM 11-36 rear cassette. It's pretty expensive, but shifts
wonderfully:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/7146507619/in/set-72157629609638106

and:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157629609638106/with/7146507619/

Also, White Industries makes a nice one: here it is in 26-42 (it's
also pricey), here on a Pereira:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/7122851567/in/set-72157629558340752

or:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157629558340752/with/7122851567/

And here's a do-it-yourself model: Gunnar Crosseyes with a converted
Ritchey logic, large chainring removed, in 26-40: It also works great:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/6365147015/in/set-72157628055130729

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157628055130729/with/6365147015/

They are work well, shift better than fine. All 3 bikes have 12-34 or
larger cassettes.

Good luck

[RBW] Re: Relic-ed guitars and Pre-Beausaged Rivendells...

2012-09-25 Thread Kieran J
I used to deal in the world of musical instruments, and the "relic" theme
was mostly contained to some new model Stratocasters and Telecasters
modeled after '50's and '60s originals. Mostly classic guitars meant to
"look" road-worn. I always thought the notion of faking 40 years of honest
(and often reckless) use and enjoyment, for the purpose of a sale in a
polished retail venue like Guitar Center more than a little perverse. I
guess it's a "quick fix" solution for those with delusions of grandeur,
wanting to look like Keef, without actually putting in the time or having
the raw talent.

I feel that Riv sentiment is quite different, in that the experience of
riding itself is the payoff, with style and fashion being a matter of
functional preference. After all, there are plenty of worn out, beat up
parts for sale on the used market. I'm not exactly surprised most
commenters so far have panned the idea of a pre-beausaged ride, for a
primarily fashion-based purpose.

Yes! Will be a noticeable difference. Go w/ the 34.

It is just that the 34 x 27 is too hard for me on local hills. Would going
to a 32 or 34 cassette in the rear make that much of a difference? Swapping
a cassette does sound like the least expensive idea.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ride a Riv-ish double crank setup?

2012-09-25 Thread dougP
The 34 is the smallest ring on a 110 BCD. Perhaps you can get low
enough by changing cassette and possibly RD. Check Harris as they
usually have a nice selection of wide range cassettes. One of my buds
got an 11-32 9 speed from them and it works (amazingly) with his short
cage Ultegra RD & STI. He just swapped out an 11-27 and of course put
on a new chain, no other changes.

If you do get into changing cranks, the 30 / 46 combination seems
pretty popular but if you're going that far you may want to think
about your entire gearing needs.  You mention you're in hilly country;
are you carrying loads? What type of shifters do you have? Would you
change those? A fair number interrelated considerations to make.
There's hours of fun to be had on this type of project.

2012-09-25 Thread Michael_S
After trying and liking a 46-32-22 on my 650B bike, I converted my 700C
road bike to a 44-29. I've been super happy with both and with 11-30 8
speed cassette's they work great for me. For some reason this combo is just
great. I never used the 22 granny on the 650B bike yet, but with full
panniers or on a super steep dirt road climb I'm sure it will be useful.
The big problem is finding older MTB 94mm bcd cranks unless you want to
spend big $$'s for the Compass,TA, Middleburn or White ind. models that can
do this as well.

One thing you could do more cheaply than a new crank is go with a 34 t
cassette in back.
You might have an MTB derailer lying around, and even if your buying new
the cassette and RD woould be less than a new crank, unless of course you
insist on Ultegra quality.

The smallest the Ultegra compact double will take is a 34 (well, maybe
33). Like William said, you will need a different crankset. Here's the
gospel of Sheldon Brown on smallest chain ring per BCD:
http://sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-bcd.html

Search the archives and you should find plenty of information on
possible cranksets. You will also need to consider what kind of bottom
bracket you have and whether you'll want to replace that too, or find
a compatible replacement crank.

My doubles include a 42-28, a 36-26 (mostly for dirt), and a 48-30 (road only).

Welcome to the world of parts swapping -- that's half the fun.

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b Marathing vs. 650b Soma Xpress

2012-09-25 Thread William
Tubeless is purported to stop flats in two ways. First, there is nothing
to pinch, so pinch flats are impossible. This allows us to run even lower
pressures without worry. Second, the sealant is supposed to seal around
anything that pokes your tire.

I've only been running 650B tubeless for a few months on my commute bike.
I've gotten zero flats, but I don't consider that meaningful. I imagine a
huge nasty tire gasher, like a big chunk of glass or metal that rips a hole
in your tire is still going to give you a flat with tubeless. On distance
rides, I still carry a tube, which you can still put in there on your
tubeless setup.

2012-09-25 Thread William
Your Ultegra cranks won't take a 30. You'll be buying a new crankset to go
to a true compact double. I run compact doubles on three bikes.

My commuter has a chainguard+42+26 on a 130/74 BCD in front with a 6 speed
13x24 freewheel in back.
My Hilsen has a 44/30 on 94mm BCD in front with a 9 speed 11-26 in back.
My road bike has a 44/30 White Industries VBC in front with a 9 speed 12-27
in back.

I've never thought to myself on any of those three bikes: "dang, I need a
higher top end gear"

A friend of mine had a pair of Rock 'n' Roads on his '80s MTB and told me he
LOVED them -- some real trail traction without any road buzz. So I tried them
and liked them a lot -- my commute is mostly packed gravel or dirt trails, and
they seemed a little better suited to it than the Marathons. (Which I like a
lot, BTW -- just not as well suited for the use this bike will mostly get.)

RE: [RBW] First commute -- Mystery Bike!

2012-09-25 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Thanks! Just measured the chainstays -- they're even longer than I would have
guessed, effectively 54+ cm, with rear wheel all the way back in the horizontal
drops. Hence, I'm guessing, the extremely cushy ride. But surprisingly (or
maybe not, given the tentacular diagastays), it handles weight way back on the
rack (which I could barely mount -- the struts are maxed out) beautifully. No
swaying at all (I haven't loaded it really heavily yet, so I guess the jury's
out, but it feels really sturdy back there). And it is definitely not sluggish
in turns -- goes where you point it, when you point it. So, bottom line seems
to be that you get the benefits that conventional wisdom says you'd get from
the long chainstays, without (at least based on my experience) the downsides.

Do the Marathons feel draggy? Or do they roll nicely?

I am leaning towards the Marathons, just because I feel they may be the
better made tire.

Nothing against the Soma's but I think they are Panaracer. And All three of
my Panaracer tires have splits in the sidewalls when new.

For commuting I use B-Lines from April-September and Marathons from
October-March. So I can avoid possibly changing flats in the rain in
Seattle. (My B-Lines are not flat prone but Marathons are
indestructible and I think they ride pretty well in 650b.)

[RBW] WTT: tires

2012-09-25 Thread rex
hi
i have a set of irc mythos cx 700cx42 tires in good condition id like to
trade/sell. i got them from a list member for my quickbeam, but they dont
fit under the fenders and i dont want to remove the fenders just to have
knobby tires.
ideally id like to trade them for a set of knobby mtn bike tires in 26x2.1
range. i have an old bridgestone nb-26 that i can switch from slicks to
knobbies on, and that would work for my off roading purposes too.
other trades considered as well.
alternately i would sell them for $30 for the pair plus $5 shipping.
thanks for your time

[RBW] Re: OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks

2012-09-25 Thread sancruz
I have the Saris Thelma 3 on the back of my VW wagon, and it works
flawlessly! The rack is easily removed from the hitch by unthreading a
single bolt. When its on the car, but not in use, it folds up 90 degrees
to nest against the back of the car. Its super simple to put the bikes
onto the rack too - you just need to lift the bike up about 12+ inches into
the trays and wrap a locking strap around each wheel for a solid hold. You
can get 3 bikes on the rack and never have to worry about the bikes rubbing
on one another, and much better for fuel economy too!

Re: [RBW] OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks

2012-09-25 Thread René Sterental
If your bikes have fenders and you don't want to hang them from the top
tubes (I don't!), then there are only three options in the market for tray
based hitch racks:

Yakima Stickup 2 - This is the one I upgraded to from the Thule (see below)
mainly for its curved arm to help clear curbs and driveways, as well as the
added separation between the two bikes as well as their completely
independent arms. It has no integrated locks, but I take care of that with
a bike chain when I'm parked.

Thule DoubleTrack - This is the one I used on my Corolla and Prius, but it
had the bad habit of hitting the ground when going up and down driveways.
Additionally, the bikes are quite close together which sometimes created
issues with my Rivendells.

Swagman XC2 - I've never used this, so I cannot comment on them.

Bpth the Corolla and Prius have Class 1 hitches and I never had any issues
with the Thule. I have just upgraded to the Stickup 2.

[RBW] Re: OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks

2012-09-25 Thread Rob
I went through this selection process a year or so ago. I settled on a
Softride Dura for my wife's station wagon, based on wanting something that
folded down to allow access to the hatch, and I thought getting the backs
on a rear rack would be easier than lifting them up onto a roof rack. I
found one on craigslist:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/robharrison/5969361080/ The Dura has an
adapter that allows it to fit both 1 1/4" and 2" receivers, but the 1 1/4"
adapter moves the whole rack back about 8", which makes for a pretty long
cantilever: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robharrison/5969363620/ The rack
is bolted on, very sturdy, and quite heavy. We leave it on all the time.
The bars that actually hold the bikes come off, so you can put those in the
back of the car. The rubber straps that fasten the bikes to the rack arms
are secure, but not at all easy to attach. There are provisions for
anti-sway straps too, which work well, but are also hard to attach. I
haven't had any issues with scratching of bikes with the rack. I take care
to slide the rubber straps under any cables. We've had two kids' bikes and
two adult bikes on the rack. I like the fact that the bikes sit behind the
car, which affords better mileage I imagine than having the bikes on top.

That said, if I had it to do over again, because of the difficulty of
strapping the bikes on with this rack, and the versatility of being able to
carry other stuff too (skis, canoe) on a roof rack, I'd get a roof rack
with an arm like the KC Metro buses have instead, like this Thule Sidearm:
http://www.thule.com/en-US/US/Products/Bike-Carriers/RoofCarriers/594XT-SidearmAs
I understand it, Thule bought the rights to use this design from the
Seattle company which makes the racks for the buses. Sportsrack maybe? You
can still sometimes find the car roof racks they made on craigslist.

This happens only because the OP said "Things I wish RBW STILL sold",

[RBW] Minoura seatpost grabber

2012-09-25 Thread Leslie
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tl022.htm

I already had a bike stand; but when I saw the Minoura stand that RBW has,
I noticed the seatpost grabber, and really liked it. At that point, RBW
said they couldn't get those, that they had a lot of requests for them but
couldn't get those alone. Then I tried contacting Minoura USA, and even
Minoura in Japan, trying to get one, and it just wasn't possible, it
seemed. A year later, I'd try again, and come up empty again.

The other night, I spotted these, that they'd appeared on the RBW site.
Ordered mine right then. Arrived last night.

Since they'd said that other folks had asked about them before, I thought
I'd point out to the Bunch that they're available...

I have had a thule drop down hitch rack for about ten years. This is
the one that the wheels set in trays and it is secured in back with a
rim strap and in front with an adjustable
hook in the front. I have had no porblem with it and use it 4 times a
week. If I was going to buy a new one I would look at the Kuat. Those
are pretty cool on of them has an integrated clamp bike stand on the
rack.
My two cents...
