Thanks Reid, yeah it all comes with the bike. Well, I think I'm actually

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose Bars: New v. Old

2012-10-21 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I own 2 sets of the new Nitto/Riv Bullmoose, and with the extra sweep and
width I think the new ones are the bee's knees.

BUT.. I do also have a few sets of the older type, and while (as Jeremy
said) they do vary in shape, width, sweep and rise, I think alot depends on
the bike as to how well or not bullmoose bars will work. I have an old
Rockhopper with just an average set of slightly tigther, narrower bullmoose
bars, but they feel so perfect on this bike, I can't imagine any othe bar
working for this particular bike.

My advice... if you like the bullmoose bars concept, try different
variations, and score a set of the Riv/Nitto ones (IF YOU CAN). Charlie
Kelly had a great idea that apparently keeps getting better over time. (I
hope Riv and Nitto make more of these).

[RBW] Ramboullet post-sugery recovery ride. Thanks to list and RBW...and I love orange bikes

2012-10-21 Thread reynoldslugs
Ok, I know it's probably off-topic so I'll keep it short. Thanks to this
list and to RBW for daily reading material, motivation and reminders, that
kept me from going crazy this summer. Rode yesterday, on my beautiful
orange Rambouillet, for first time in three months. Here's the short story:

- kidney cancer diagnosed June 11.
- rode Death Ride (www.deathride.com) on July 14.
- Surgery (Da Vinci procedure) on July 18.
- no riding this summer, but I read RBW Owners Bunch every day...
- physically, everything clear now, got back on the bike yesterday.
- Orange is a great color, the Rambouillet is a great bike, and I'm a
grateful and happy rider again.

I'm not into the cancer-color thing, but it so happens Orange is the renal
cancer awareness color, Orange is the best color for the bike, the
Rambouillet is the best Orange, it's Fall, and I'm back on the bike.

I didn't take any pictures, but there's this:

A Rambouillet is the perfect thing for a Fall ride on the easy bike paths
of West Sonoma County. The feeling of finally being back on the bike is
indescribable.

Thanks RBW OB, and thanks Rivendell. I've said many times I wouldn't be
riding again if GP and Rivendell hadn't revitalized my love for the bike in
'99.

[RBW] Ride yesterday - Walnut Creek to Redwood City

2012-10-21 Thread Tony
I was invited to join three other riders and thought I'd make a report for
a couple of two, three reasons. It is a great way to extend getting around
in the bay area by bike and public transportation and it includes the
"Planet of the Apes" route and Tunitas Creek Road. We met at the Daly City
BART station and headed towards the ocean. There we took a bunch of side
streets, beach, dirt and semi-dirt trails to get to Half Moon Bay. The end
of the day was up Tunitas Creek Road through the redwoods and a fun descent
to Redwood City where we caught Caltrain to BART and home. The ride leader
posted the route here:

[RBW] Old MUSA pants and knickers versus new

2012-10-21 Thread PATRICK MOORE
With nighttime temps dipping down to 40 (we get 30* differentials,
often more) I've been wearing my new-to-me MUSA pants and knickers,
bought at a very good price from a listmember (to whom thanks again).
Mine are both medium and are just about perfect in fit, both in
snugness and length -- tho' I do wish they were both cut to a longer
rise: I like my cycling pants to ride high in the back. These are
acceptable in back, and excellent in fit everywhere else.

So tell me, those of y'all who have worn both new and old: how do the
new (pants or knickers) fit compared to the old? I'm afraid that the
new ones will be too long and too loose for me. I particularly like
the fit and look of the old style pants: I wear them to church when I
ride there and they are trim enough to look, if not dressy, at least
neat -- I dislike pants that look like sweatpants.

Do the new one's have the same fast buckle belt? I must replace the
elastic with webbing, as the elastic is too -- elastic.

The fabric (on the old ones, at least) is just right for fall
temperatures here, particularly here in NM where I can start out at
42* and end up at 80*. The sewing is excellent.

If anyone has old models, in Medium and in good condition, to sell or
trade, I'd be interested in talking. One day when I am flush, I may
ask a tailor to alter a pair of nice, hard-weave winter wool dress
trousers to match the MUSAs.

[RBW] Re: Ride yesterday - Walnut Creek to Redwood City

2012-10-21 Thread Tony
Hi David,

Yeah, Old San Pedro Mountain Road is more historic and a better name.

It was great! I was on my Hillborne with the usual commute fenders,
albatross bars and Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 700c x 35mm tires. I was
happy, considering the fog and dark return home, that I kept the front
light and generator hub on also. Phil rode skinny road tires so as to lead
the ride later and be sure all bikes can apply.

I hope to ride with you sometime soon,

Tony

any Bay Area (east bay) recommendations? I'm assuming this is something that I
wouldn't bring the bike to walnut creek for. thanks for your input!

Thanks for all your input on this. Still trying to figure out what to do. What
are the general differences between powder coating and painting? durability and
longevity? matte finish versus glossy or clearcoat? can I paint the lugs if I
powder coat? I'm new at this so any info is very helpful!

[RBW] Re: Beautiful Sam at Bikeworks NYC

2012-10-21 Thread Joe K
The musings here about Bikeworks are encouraging me to get acquainted
with them. I think I stopped in the shop 10+ years ago, but don't
recall much from that time. I'm in a different borough, but I have
relatives in that neighborhood, so it'll be easy.
If a NYC has a "BOBish" shop I'd bet it'd be Bikeworks.

When I'd finally gathered all the parts for my Riv custom, I had it
put together at Conrad's...I know it's a pretty upper-crusty, racy
type shop, but they've been there forever, and it was widely
recommended at the time. And the fellow who did the work (named Yee)
did a really good job.

I appreciate that bike every day. Like today, on a ride in the
park. :)

Thanks for the link. I haven't laughed that hard in a LONG time!

The Oregon Bike Ride (definitely not to be confused with

Spam is great in those circumstances.
I love it on those occasions, otherwise it never touches my lips

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunq on first camping trip...

2012-10-21 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I guess we'll call it Tour de Waimanalo and it was certainly more a tour
than the BORAF in that I went, I rode around, and I rode back, camping
while there and never raced (well running downhill with a loaded bike can
be kind of fun).

I left on Friday morning and after 25 miles into the wind, replete with
stops, photo-ops, and a wonderful time on my new Hunq I arrived. I was
camping with a group of folks who aren't bikey in any way and they were all
amazed I'd ride 25 miles for anything. Several offered to give me rides
back on Sunday so I wouldn't have to ride back.

On Saturday I took a 12.5 mile ride around the back of Waimanalo just to
keep my legs happy, my brain happy. My Hunq, without all the luggage,
though still sporting her Wald up front, attracted a few stares. I like to
think at least one of the folks blasting past me considered that perhaps I
was having a great time not worrying about much of anything.

Today I packed up fairly early so that I didn't have to ride home in the
heat of the day, though I still caught enough. The ride back was much
easier than the ride out because although it was still windy I had it at my
back from time to time.

I was very impressed how easy it was to climb up to Makapuu lookout from
Sea Life Park now that the shoulder is marginally wider and I have a bike
that both had easy to use gearing and track really, really well. I've done
it on a variety of bikes including my Quickbeam (which tracks well but
doesn't go as low).

The camping bit itself was really quite nice. We were actually on Bellows
AFB so we had a PX we could use, we'd all chipped in for dinner, and lots
of folks brought grills and such so I didn't need my Trangia and could buy
coffee in the morning. I'd be the first to admit it was just barely
camping. I mean I did sleep in a tent and all, but the rest was not even
close to roughing it. :-)

On the ride back I treated myself to something else we love in Hawaii
besides SPAM. Shave ice. And not that roughly shaved stuff I often find
when I travel, but the highly shaved variety that holds the syrup and on a
hot day is so cold it's challenge to avoid a cold-ache with ever bite.
Yummm.

Shave Ice

And here's a variety of unedited shots from the rest of the trip. I'd take
more but it's a regular ride and I'm likely to see a lot of again next
weekend even. :-)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157631824788937/

As for the bike, it was great, both loaded and unloaded. While I wouldn't
say that 25 miles is a particularly long ride, it's long enough loaded and
into the wind and I was comfy the whole way, not achy anything, no hot
spots, just riding.

I can't wait to do it again (though I'll have to pick another campsite as I
can't get on base without the sponsor who set this one up). You'd think
we'd have a lot more spots to camp but it is fairly limited and tough to
get a permit at times.

Anyway, it was a blast...I'm glad the Hunq made it here in time for the
journey!

Aloha, Bob

When I was in high school, back in the 80's we had a teacher who took a
couple of us ice fishing in the winter.
We did it two years in a row with Mr. Cruise, and I will never forget the
selflessness of that teacher taking us out both times.
It was just two or three of us, but we had a blast, and it was nice that a
teacher took us out on "their time".
I think things like that mean alot to students.
