Re: [RBW] Signal police

2012-11-18 Thread Matthew J
Having difficulty conceptually with all forms of rude driving behavior being
equal.

Cyclists can and do often annoy. They rarely kill or maim.

Bus drivers may be reported and in Chicago at least fired for reckless
behavior.

While auto casualties overall have declined, this is mainly because autos are
safer and their occupants less likely to be hurt. Pedestrian, cyclist and
property encounters are increasing. Except for the most egregious behavior,
reporting does little good. With cash strapped governments putting fewer cops
on the road, I expect the problems with autos will only increase.

No one said that their sins are equal; I agree that motorists take their
responsibilities far, far too lightly, They just said that even motorists
have rights and that even cyclists have responsibilities.

Re: [RBW] Signal police

2012-11-18 Thread jimD
I've been commuting by my bike to my work with varying frequency over the past
30 years.

For myself, and as a driver, I go by the philosophy that cars are not my
friends when I'm bicycling.
I choose routes that expose me to the least amount of traffic.

When I commute by car I realize how other traffic, my sense of mission (must
get to work, must get home, must get to store),
and all the other distractions, narrow my focus. I prefer to avoid this if
possible. Add in the small percentage of my fellow
drivers who believe that bicycles have no place on the roads and things get
sketchy.

By and large I've found the greatest percentage of folks driving are
considerate. What might be a 'fender bender' in my car is
likely to be much worse for me on my bicycle..

Thanks all,

I've decided to go with upgrading my brakes to Tektro 539s, switching to
P45 SKS fenders, and keeping my 32mm pasela TGs (jack browns once they wear
out). If anyone wants to sell me some Tektro 539s cool but I'll pick up
some on ebay tonight otherwise.

Thanks again,

[RBW] brakes

2012-11-18 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
When I built my Sam last summer I selected what I thought were
reasonably priced drive train components that function reasonably
well. One result I am less than extatic about is brakes, which are
Deore v-brakes with kool stop pads and the Tektro drop bar levers that
work with vees. This combination stops the bike just fine, but has
nowhere near the modulated feel of the calipers on my Brompton. In
comparison the vees fell, for want of a better word, clunky.

So, what am I doing wrong and what can be done to fix it? A different
typre of brake? A different model? Different levers and j-tek
thingies?

I love the feeling of control that good brakes provide. How to I gwt
that on my canti Sam?

Tektro levers, fwiw.

I've tried Tektro and DiaCompe drop bar levers for v-brakes, and I've tried
j-tek. I've been satisfied with none of them. I run canti's with drop bars
for better stopping. I just set up a bike with Deore v-brakes and mountain
levers, and I'm really impressed by the stopping power.

2012-11-18 Thread Eric Platt
Good for them. Looked at the listing, but no more, since my SimpleOne is
doing a good enough job. Didn't need a second dedicated single speed.

Seems to me that the larger single speed bikes often go for less. Still,
it was a good deal for someone.

[RBW] Rivendell Garage Sale - what'd you get?

2012-11-18 Thread Philip Williamson
I am honestly sorry for folks who couldn't make it, but I had such a good
time, I have to share.
http://www.biketinker.com/2012/rambles/rivendell-garage-sale-haul/

My best score was a bunch of MUSA knickers. One pair for $20, and 3 pairs
for $5 each. The coolest thing I don't actually need was a prototype Nitto
"Dove" bar. I traded a Nitto welded steel stem back to them for it, which
was my previous "super-cool thing I don't need." The Freddy Hoffman
tee-shirt is pretty cool.

[RBW] Rivendell Garage Sale - what'd you get?

2012-11-18 Thread Crazy4Suki
I got a pair of 650b Middys for $5. There were some great deals on some used
Hilsens for $1700, a mystery bike for $2000 and the 48 Sam with moustache for
$2000. Saw more but that's what stood out in my mind. I went specifically
looking for new tires for my Betty but brought $1500 in cash just in case lol.

What tires? And how fat can the S1 go? I really must build up a ss for dirt

[RBW] Re: brakes

2012-11-18 Thread dougP
Jay:

This is interesting. I have exactly the same set-up as you on my
Atlantis & couldn't be happier. The Deores are the plain ones that
Riv had on close-out last year, just plain Deore with no extra letters
or fiddly pads. Before that I had Tektro 720s for a long time (with
the appropriate levers) and they just took too much lever pull. The
Vs work great on long steep downhills and modulate better than the
cantis.

One variable may be cable housing. When I changed the brakes, I
bought some extremely stiff cable housing. Don't recall the brand but
was about 3X as pricey as Shimano standard housing. My cables run
under the bar tape, so plenty of tight bends.

Another variable I haven't personally tested is whether or not letting
the cables "run where they may" would be any different. Even though
the Tektro levers have the same pull as MTB levers, I suspect the
cable routing with the tight bends under the bar tape may create some
additional friction. I have a note to self to see what, if any,
effect freeing up the cables may have but that will have to wait until
the next time the bar tape needs replacing.

Keep us posted on whatever you try. I keep learning new stuff here.

[RBW] Something I wish Rivendell (or anyone else) would make

2012-11-18 Thread Jim Cloud
There's often threads on this forum, and others, about cycling apparel
that isn't Lycra. One thing I think would sell like hotcakes is a
very accurate reproduction of the cycling shorts made previously by
Hebden Cord in England. These shorts, while still "cycling specific"
in their design would wear nicely off the bike without looking too
racy.

Here's a couple of sites that show the cycling shorts:

http://www.archivalclothing.com/2006/11/hebden-cord-co-ltd.html

http://www.flickr.com/photos/smallwheelsociety/4669291206/

I'm lucky if I can sew a missing button back on a shirt, or I'd
attempt to reproduce the shorts myself.

Re: [RBW] Something I wish Rivendell (or anyone else) would make

2012-11-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
+1. The MUSAs are nice (at least the older models; I've not tried the new)
but they are definitely casual. These look almost dressy and appear to be
just as practical.

One appeal to all makers of cycling pants: make them high in the back! I've
owned several pairs of expensive cycling pants that were cut like modern
dress trousers, that is, low waist all around. No good! Even the MUSAs --
again, the older ones -- are too low for real comfort. I wonder if the new
ones are better in that regard? But I do like the trim fit of the old ones
otherwise.

Most of it (bars, seatpost, FD, probably crankset) is for my wife's

The dyno hubs were also a screaming deal. Super excited, this will be my

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Garage Sale - what'd you get?

2012-11-18 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
I went with two other Rivendell-aware riding buddies and had a blast
working through the bargains and chatting with other friends whom I've not
seen in person for a while (e.g., Manny A).

*Best score:
*8 pieces of Wooly Warm baselayers. At $5 a piece, it felt like stealing.
Sure, they were all XS and I'm 5'10", but the wife was very happy so I
didn't need to do too much explaining for...

*Coolest scores I don't actually need:
*A NOS Atlantis frameset. Yup, I was the other guy lugging around an
Atlantis frameset. They sold at least 2 Atlantis framesets and 1
almost-complete bike that day. The old I picked up was one of the early
Toyos and there were some paint chips and other superficial marks (can't be
beausage since it actually hasn't been used), but at the price they were
asking, I *had* to scrounge up the cash.

It was at least the 3rd time that a discounted Atlantis knocked. The first
was a barely used one from Box Dog Bikes in SF. I saw the online ad and
hurried over during my lunchtime. I almost crashed into another gentleman
going through the BDB door but being gentlemen, we proceeded to invite the
other to go first. He eventually did but he also *bought that Atlantis! *Oh
well. The second time was at another Riv garage sale. A bit of hesitation
and it was sold to another gentleman who was just slightly less undecided.
I suppose the third time's a charm so now an Atlantis shares stable space
with my commuter LHT.

*Coolest score I actually need:
*SP dynamo hubs for $20 each. Just in time as the runtime of my old Dinotte
lights are getting mighty short. I can't even run the light on high anymore
as the current draw depresses the battery voltage so much the light thinks
we're out of power. I'll need to build the wheel and buy a compatible light
so this will be a month-long project.

[RBW] Re: Something I wish Rivendell (or anyone else) would make

2012-11-18 Thread Jim Cloud
I was thinking about the longer length shorts, as they're shown in the
Hebden Cord catalog specifically. The Flickr photo is the only one
that I've found that actually shows a pair of Hedben Cord shorts,
they're obviously quite short in length. If Russell Brand would "rock
those" as you've stated I could care less

True, but you'd also have to add shipping to the original Rivendell purchase
price.
