mostly my fault for heaving it over gates & such and my tendency to fall

On my last Brooks saddle instructions, the message was to only oil the

[RBW] Re: Anyone riding upright with Brooks Flyer saddle?

2013-06-05 Thread Jay Lonner
I'm rocking a Flyer on my city/utility bike set up with Bosco bullmoose
bars. It's fine for rides under 10 miles (which is most of my riding on
this bike). But I just came back from a longer ride, and yeah, toward the
end I was wanting a little more support. I just got a B68 last week
(Wallingford Bike still has them) that I intend to swap in.

Incidentally, does anyone know why Brooks decided to discontinue the B68?
I've never ridden a B67, but I suspect the springs would be too much in
combination with fat (40mm and up) tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: Actual Tire Sizes

2013-06-05 Thread Dennis Hogan
Hi Tom-

I have been running the Continental 42's for several months. I bot them
from Riv and they were said to actually measure 38 mm which I found to be
true. I have liked them - mainly riding on roads but with a few wild rides
on gravel, dirt, frozen dirt etc. My only problem was finding fenders to
mount and ended up with SKS Velo 65 Cross fenders. I could not find them in
the states but had them shipped from Europe They are a bit ugly but very
functional for the Portland weather and are quick release for the sunny
days. I originally tried some Bruce Gordon Rock N' Roads which I loved but
could not solve the fender problem so they found a home with another list
member.

Hope this is helpful - Dennis in PDX

One of my bikes was stolen today at CSU Northridge. If you see it pop up on

When I first built this bike, and was riding down the road, some passerby
yelled "Nice Rivendell". That was a nice compliment.

[RBW] Re: Seattle tour Oct. 1st: weather too iffy?

2013-06-05 Thread Jay Lonner
Early October is arguably my favorite time of year here. The rains don't
usually set in for real until November, and while the nights can get chilly
the days frequently are beautiful. Alpine routes typically are wide-open,
and the mosquitoes and black flies are mostly dead. If you're considering
the San Juans, the traffic will have died way down from tourist season.
Probably the biggest limitation of touring that time of year is that at
this latitude the days start to get short.

[RBW] Re: Family Ramble

2013-06-05 Thread Swza
These fires will become more and more common. Although there was some snow
at the end of the winter this year, overall, Colorado had
very disappointing snow levels this year (especially considering how
horrible the last two years were). We already had a fire in Evergreen and
it's the middle of Spring. If we have another winter next year like this
year, Denver and the metro area will be in huge trouble and there will be
massive fire problems in the mountains. My brother measures water levels
for the state and the problem is much worse than people realize.

Bike rides like these will be harder to come by in the future. Patrick, I
don't know what the answer is but we have to all start acting now, do
anything you can. It breaks my heart to see your daughters riding and to
think what our magical and majestic mountains will look like when they are
grown.

[RBW] Showing off the Hunq around Honolulu

2013-06-05 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Most of the time I'm pretty anonymous when riding around town on my bikes.
There aren't a lot of Rivs in Honolulu so they do stand out, but truthfully
most folks don't pay much attention. Sometimes, however, you run into a
bunch of folks that do...

On the last Friday of the month here in Honolulu we have a semi-organized
holoholo ride (holoholo loosely translates to 'going out no place in
particular for fun' usually driving, riding, whatevahs). Think Critical
Mass without either the critical or the mass and leavened with Aloha:

"Holoholo Ride takes place every last Friday of the month and is open to
anyone who wishes to join a fun, cycling, law conscious group of cycling
enthusiasts for a cruise around Honolulu. The route starts at the State
Capitol and ends at the Eat The Streets Food Truck event."

http://www.hbl.org/holoholoride

Back to the story...I'd headed out after work for my own holoholo ride,
just taking in the sights, grabbing a bite, having coffee, viewing the
waterfront, that sort of thing and ended up at our local Eat the Street
monthly event. Basically it's a monthly street food event. Lot's of folks
attend.

http://www.streetgrindz.com/eatthestreet/

Well being Bike Month our local bike org (hbl.org) had set up a bicycle
valet service.

I cruised by for some dinner and to visit a friend working the valet
service when the Holoholo Ride folks showed up. They had a great collection
of sensible bikes for the most part with fenders, lights, baskets, and
such, along with the requisite fixies and such.

They saw my Hunqapillar and...well I wasn't so anonymous anymore. I spent a
good twenty minutes showing off the bike and answering questions, and even
got photographed by a fellow named Sau Hsu who has a blog of bikey stuff.
You can see his photos of my bike here:

http://nextelevatortrip.blogspot.com/2013/06/everyday-including-holidays.html

One of the folks, and I'm afraid I didn't catch his name, says he'll be
getting Hillbourne sometime this year and asked what I thought of them. As
I almost got one myself but opted for the Hunq I just had to say go for it.

Mostly the folks on the ride were in their 20s and 30s so it looks like
lugged steel has a great future.

I think I may have promised to show up at the next ride on my Quickbeam. :-)

Aloha, Bob

Re: [RBW] Albas...steel or aluminum? Please help me decide...

2013-06-05 Thread clyde canter
Michael,
I have both. The only difference I can tell, other than the weight, and I
can't perceive any
difference between the two when attached to a bicycle is the aluminum one
seems to be
less prone to slippage in the stem. Both work equally well, but the
aluminum ones seem to
require less torque on the stem bolt to get them not to slip. Aluminum
would probably be a better choice for a flip top stem. I had a steel one
in such a stem once and could not get it not to slip, even to the point of
bulging the center section of the bar. Probably should have knurled it a
little.
Also, I can flex neither of them noticeably.

San Luis Obispo is central to lots of great cycling, and is accessible to
all. It's generally considered mid-way between LA & San Francisco. If

Morro Bay, Montana de Oro. Plenty of lodging choices plus tons of good
coffee places in SLO itself as well as outlying areas. In Templeton is the

[RBW] Re: Seattle tour Oct. 1st: weather too iffy?

2013-06-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
"There's no such thing as bad wether, just bad clothing." Grin. I can't
speak to the specifics of the Pacific NW in October, but this general
"rule" of getting quality clothing that works for every condition/activity
yields a lot of wonderful fruit -- seeing things and places at times others
shrink from. For me, it means spending more on rain gear (I've a cotton
analogy set up coming from Hilltrek I'll let you know about). Yesterday we
had a warm and sunny morning with an afternoon of multiple waves of t-heads
and rain. My single layer ventile jacket over a Riv. aussie wool "long
john" shirt worked great both resting and biking in low gear up steep hills
with all our day gear and our 30 lb 3-year-old. Those are challenging
conditions for most rainwear as the shift between high aerobic work and
sitting in the rain typically leads to "boil in the bag" -- but ventile
breathes so well it's not an issue. With the addition of the active pushing
of both vapor and liquid moisture out from me to the world, the cotton
analogy looks to be just the ticket for long days in wet at any temp.

Enjoy whatever you end up doing!

With abandon,
Patrick

Hey Pacific Northwest Riv folks,

My touring buddy and I are thinking about a bike tour starting end of
Sept/beginning of Oct, loaded touring with camping. He suggested
starting in Seattle and heading south. I love the Pacific Northwest,
but it strikes me that October would be too late in the year, too
cold, rainy and dark, for a fun tour, and we should leave Seattle for
another year and start further south. What do you think?

I suppose we could also consider doing the tour, but credit-card

Yeah, we see the slow recovery from the Haymen Fire in '02. When they burn
that big and hot, it really takes decades compared with the smaller, less
volatile fires that are supposed to happen more frequently if we don't over
manage our forests. Not that I have an opinion on the matter. Sardonic grin.

Re: [RBW] Re: Actual Tire Sizes

2013-06-05 Thread Leslie
Paul Motolites. Since the Bomba is a 650b frame, with the collar in the
normal position, everything lines up fine. Slide the collar up ~2/3 in,
and it hits at the 700c level. Had plenty of clearance under the fenders
w/ the 700c-35 tire (of course, this is the same bike that I can run the
2.3 NeoMotos under fenders, too).

Yup, I think that's what might end up happenin' just run a bit smaller
in the rear, that I am in the front.

So last night, I liberated my 700c wheelset from the Bomba and put the

With that done, I popped the 700c wheelset into the canti-Rom's frame for
the first time to have a look at clearances.

H..

My front tire is currently a Specialized Borough CX 700c 32 variant (not
the slick one), looks like there's plenty of room to go larger in the
fork. MSO would be fine there.

My rear tire is a Ritchey 700c 35 Speedmax CX, but it comes in more like a
34; and there's about 7mm between the center of the tire and the underside
of the "brake" bridge (which isn't a brake bridge since it's a canti bike,
but, it's the limiting location... the chainstay bridge has more
clearance). A true 38 would clear, but anything larger would be 'really'
close, getting down to a only a mm or two of clearance.

Oh, wheelset is on Dyads... if the MSO actually hits 40 tall on Dyads, it'd
be a no-go on the rear, I think... would fit the front, I'm sure.

But, it's not like I have to, or necessarily should, run the same tire
front and back... might do an MSO in the front, and a Conti in the rear,
or something else... or, just stick w/ the Ritchey for now

getting rid of both my Rivendell bikes to concentrate on actual wide tire
bikes. 50mm or wider. Maybe even 3.7 inches or something.

Re: [RBW] Re: Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question

2013-06-05 Thread Garth

That's a great tip if you use grips Rene :) I personally don't use them !
I tape the bar with cork tape :) I use thumbshifters mounted in the inside
top curve, and bar end brake levers, so I have about 12 inches of open bar
to move around . It's Glorious Freedom !!! This to me expresses the full
beauty of the Alba bars to allow All-that-open-bar-space to be used
for the hands. Putting tiny(to me) grips on a huge bar like the Alba is
like limiting yourself to two grip points on a steering wheel of a car.
You've got the whole circle, but choose to only grip in two places. Kinda
silly to me !

They'll both last as you will :)

Seriously . need not concern yourself over such intangibles . Either
one is wonderful .

[RBW] Re: Albas...steel or aluminum? Please help me decide...

2013-06-05 Thread bobish
I have 3 bikes with a-bars and I'm pretty sure one of them is cro-mo. Are they
obviously marked somewhere? Near stem insert point? I need to look. Anyway, I
don't think it makes much difference to me. How about cro-mo for heavy
rider/rough-tough offroading and AL for a everything else?

2013-06-05 Thread KenP
I have both on different bicycles. The weight or material is all the same
to me, but the steel one is wider and feels better that way.
