Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look

2013-06-06 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Okay...I managed to actually get out for a about a mile. Sigh.

Naturally enough after I'd spent some time taking off the saddlebag and my
Brooks B-17 Select off my Hunqapillar and putting on the C-17 I discovered
my front tire had flatted. I guess I was lucky to make it home because I
hadn't noticed anything. I'm also using Schwalbe Marathons with Green Guard
and rarely ever have a problem with those tires.

Sure enough I found a bent nail protruding from the tire. I haven't found
the hole in the tube yet (though I know where it HAS to be). In truth I
didn't really look hard, just cleared the tire, slapped in a new tube,
pumped it up and ...

My first ride on the C-17. As it was already getting late and I'd had tire
issues I didn't really have time to do more than cycle around my block and
neighboring blocks a few times.

The saddle is comfortable. It feels to me like a slightly smaller B-17, but
it still fit my bones and I'm a big guy so no problems there. It feels
broken in already and yes, the saddle is slightly springy, more so than a
new Select, probably about the same as a new Standard (which seem much
'looser' to me, but then the leather is thinner I think).

I wondered about the angle of the C-17 and whether I'd need to keep the
nose up as I do with B-17s and yes, I did have to make sure the nose is up
a bit. I haven't quite adjusted it perfectly yet, but it's pretty good. I
did try it with the nose even and it's not good for me at all in the same
way a B-17 isn't at that angle.

I did take some more photos but I'm not sure I followed instructions. :-(

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157633979190099/

On the whole it felt fine and while I need to fine tune the position I
think I'll be happy with it. I can't say if I'll keep it on the Hunq for
long, but it'll find a spot. Right now I'm thinking I may put it on my Bike
Friday when I prep that for RAGBRAI 2013.

As for the C-17 being waterproof...yeah, I guess it is. But honestly I live
in Honolulu where we get a fair bit of rain. I've never left my bike out in
the rain without a cover on the saddle, but all of my leather saddles have
gotten wet, damp, moist, splashed, sweated on and over, and in the end,
they are all fine. I'm not sure I see the need for a waterproof Brooks
(other than marketing), but I'm glad to have a chance to try one.

I'll be commuting on it tomorrow and hopefully either Saturday or Sunday I
can put on some miles and really give it a fair test.

So far so good.

Aloha,

Bob

[RBW] Log your RBW video requests here...

2013-06-06 Thread Michael
I love their wrenching videos.
How to set up drop bars, derailers, twining, fenders, and packing/unpacking
and assembling bikes have all been a great resource to me.

Anything else you would like them to make vids of? Maybe they will read our
requests here and make some more vids.

I would like to see how they *install and adjust sidepull and center pull
brakes and their cables/housings*.

I know, I know, I can go to the Park website or see someone else do it on
youtube or read a book. But RBW vids are so laid back and friendly and
clear and concise and they don't make me think I am gonna die no matter how
perfectly I do the mechanical work. Makes it fun to do it and not scary.

I go to Sheldon Brown's website for the scary stuff, 'cuz he covers the
death warnings about every minute detail, which is a good service to give
so we'll all be safe doing our own wrenching.
Then I read books on the subject at hand.
Then I look at the Riv vids to bring me out of neurotica and into the "you
can do it!" happy repair/assembly frame of mind.

So tell 'em what 'ya wanna see next on the "LEARN" videos!

[RBW] Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look

2013-06-06 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I was chosen as one of the first 100 folks to receive a Brooks Cambium C-17
saddle. Mine just arrived today and while I haven't yet mounted it on a
bike (probably my daily ride, the Hunq), I did take some pictures to "prove
it happened."

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157633977211833/

I generally ride the B-17 model and I've got a bunch of those in standard,
Special, and the new Select. The C-17 definitely feels lighter (though of
course that's not really a concern). It also is made with less material
than a B-17 and doesn't have the 'skirting' down the sides. Since it
doesn't feel as 'slick' as worn leather I wondering if it'll grab the
inside of my pant legs. I guess we'll find out.

The overall look of the saddle is pleasing and I'm sure it'll look nice on
my Hunq (or QB). I was sent one in 'natural' and I'm pretty sure it's going
to get dirty quick...I've heard that from one of the other testers who read
an blog entry I wrote when I was informed I'd been chosen.

Unfortunately I've to run a non-bike errand right now so mounting it and
the first ride will have to come a bit later. I'm thinking I should just
mount it and and then swap seat posts between my Hunq and my QB to give it
workout on both bikes.

While the first 100 have been chosen and probably have all received their
saddles (living in Hawaii I'm probably one of the last to receive the
shipment), the did open it up by 50 more. I don't know if they've been
chosen but Brooks did suggest everyone sign up because one could be chosen
for other products. The sign-up page is still open at:

http://www.brooksengland.com/cambium/

Aloha!

Bob

All are very Rivendellish but are each very different from the other two.
Three different wheel sizes even! My saddle height is 75.5cm. PBH of
 86cm.

Bike 1: 56cm 1992 Bridgestone RB-1. This bike is stock, except for
tires, chain and bar tape. Read the catalog from Sheldon Brown to see
exactly what it has on it. I picked this up on eBay to keep at a family
vacation house in Illinois. When I got it, it seemed nearly unridden. I
put on Ruffy Tuffys (700x28), cloth bar tape, and a new chain, and rode it
about 500 miles over two vacations. It's still there in Illinois, but
family drama makes it so we won't be vacationing there anymore.
Furthermore, it fits me like a racing bike, so I consider it 2-3cm too
small for me now. Let me know if you want to talk about this bike. I've
got pictures and even a youtube video for it that I can't link from work.
Contact me offline and we can get into it. Seeking $750 shipped. I'm
open to having the bike shipped to me and then parting it out, so if you
are dying for the frameset, let me know. The 1992 was the last year of
standard diameter frame tubes, but preceded the 1993 which had the bi-plane
 fork crown.

Bike 2: 22" 1985 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport. This is another bike
that I acquired in a virtually stock condition. I did a full overhaul on
it, and sold the stock cockpit to Montclair Bobby B. I put on a Tech
Deluxe stem, 46cm Noodle bars, and Silver barcon shifters. Black B-17
saddle, and Soma New Express folding 26x1.75 tires. Highlights include a
nice low Q Specialized crankset with round rings, Shimano Deerhead
derailers. Bolt on wheels with immortal Specialized sealed bearing hubs.
Bomber 36 hole wheels. Seeking $400 and local pickup or delivery (I'm in
the East Bay not far from Riv HQ). I think of it as a very solid adventure
touring bike. Like if you don't have $3500 for a 56cm Atlantis, this may
tide you over for 15% of the price. Plenty of pics including the ones
documenting the restoration are on my flicker (my flickr handle is
Hillbubba). Contact me offlist to discuss.

Bike 3: This is the one I'm least eager to part with, partially
because I don't think many other people will love it like I do. It is a
60cm 1984 Miyata 912. I acquired this also in stock and virtually unridden
condition. I gave it a full overhaul and did a 650B conversion on it. It
is now my daily commuter, that travels to work on the roof of my car every
day. On the way home I ride 2 miles to South Hayward BART and 2 miles up
600ft of climbing to my home on the other end. The original spec was all
Shimano 600, the year before Shimano introduced index shifting. So it's a
 12 speed, with downtube friction shifters. It's got a 13x24 6-speed
freewheel in back and I made my own chainguard/42/26 super-compact double
crankset from a road triple. My conversion wheelset was NOS specialized
sealed bearing 32 hole QR hubs, Velocity A23 rims (from Longleaf), and
wheelsmith spokes. Soma New Express 650x38B tires. SKS plastic fenders
with Riv flaps. Silver brake calipers. Tektro brakelevers on the stock SR
narrow drop handlebars. Again there are copious pictures on my flickr.
There is a set devoted to this bike. I think of this as the
ultra-affordable alternative to the $3500 58cm Hilsen you want to buy, or
the $1500 used Bleriot you've been waiting for. Seeking $500 local pickup
or delivery. Contact offlist to discuss. At my saddle height of 75.5cm
this has a classic 'fist-of-post' showing, and has standard diameter tubes,
so from 20 feet away it has the lines of a classic french randonneuse. No,
it will not take Hetres, with fenders or without. But it'll take Lierres,
 Pari-Motos, and Soma New Express

[RBW] Re: FS- A Pair of Schwalbe Marathon Dureme 700x50

2013-06-06 Thread Garth
I know guys ... so many choices... tires ... bikes ... on and on :) And
it's wonderful .

I thought I would want something this wide ... but realized a 40-45mm tire
does just fine for me on the Bombadil . I also have custom Franklin
sport/touring type of frame that I think I'll try out some 35mm Kojak's or
maybe Marathon Racers on. Something speedy and fun where I can hear
the tires whizzz and I yell out we ya know ?
:)

Yes Patrick .the Marathon Dureme as far as I know is just like the
Supreme with a modified tread. So they just last and last and last. I
guess it was not considered "tough enough" or something to replace the XR
so they came up with the Mondial instead. All subjective to the rider of
course, most find them plenty great .

Well we are one day from getting back to he car. Goat heads took a toll, for
one rider with eight flats this week.
Yet it's been a great time. I put some photos up that haven't been cropped or
anything but should show some of the fun we are having.

Enjoy

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-06 Thread dougP
We'd picked July with the 12th, 19th & 26th open. I need to contact the
park to see if they've got any large groups scheduled. Now is a good time
to do so as I expect any large group would need to plan well in advance.

OTH, if the stars align for an out of town adventure with the NorCal group
that would be preferable. People have more flexibility in summer so I
think the turnout would be better. Those elevations are definitely for
summer time too. I don't know any of those areas so it would be new turf,
which is always welcome.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS- A Pair of Schwalbe Marathon Dureme 700x50

2013-06-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
$50 each? No. Garth is asking $80 each, including shipping. My #100
referred to where on our family list of priorities tires for my bike (the
only 700 we have) currently set. I actually have no tires in waiting, so am
hoping for a lot more years from my current Duremes. Touring back roads,
goat heads, and all I've not (yet) gotten a flat in over a year. These are
great tires and a shame Schwalbe does not make them any more.

With abandon,
Patrick

While I know that this is tongue-in-cheek, I humbly offer that I am not
smarter, righter, and better and that we are not a superior group of
people—but rather that I am part of a group of people who are bound by love
for things Riv, and especially by love for Rivendell bicycles. We are
bound by love and that is our sameness.

okay, now I'll step down from my tiny tippy soapbox ;0)

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-06 Thread Mike Schiller
I was up there last summer for a backpacking trip out of Florence lake and
thought that the roads would be perfect for a fat tired bike tour. We could
do day rides from Huntington or even a tour to Vermilion Resort.
http://www.edisonlake.com/ The roads to Florence and Edsion lakes are
the most remote in the Sierra's. The roads are paved now but past Kaiser
Pass they look like someone just paved a dirt road with out grading.

It's a 4 hr drive from LA or SF so a three day weekend would allow for 2
days of riding.

The is good riding also in the Alta Sierra Range west of Lake Isabella.
Better in Sept maybe. One could ride up to the old logging mill in
Johnsondale and then up towards Alta Sierra on narrow paved roads through
pine forests.

Re: [RBW] Re: Am I nuts?

2013-06-06 Thread Brian Hanson
On the recent Seattle vs Portland Rumble ride, we had 3 Hilsens and a Hillborne
do a few miles of nasty rutted jeep trail down a 4-10% grade at speed
(15-30mph) for a few miles. I was amazed how completely great the bike felt on
a ride I would normally do on a front suspension MTB. This was with "skinny"
Cypres tires and a boxy Rando bag on the front Mark's rack with two cameras, a
rain coat, and trail mix inside. I managed to pinch flat the rear tire on one
of the nastier sections, but this was my fault in that I dumped some air
pressure thinking I would need more traction. My biggest problem was feet
slipping off the pedals on some big hits.

The country bike is a great mountain bike, and it doesn't even need fat tires
if you are willing to live with a little abuse. It tracked really well for me
even with a front load, and was never twitchy. Now, the Hunqapillar with
Albatross, Duremes, and V's felt even more forgiving the day before, but that
descent was much less knarly except for the short stretch down to the river.

[RBW] FS: Three (3!) very Rivish yet very different used bicycles

2013-06-06 Thread William
As most of you know, my daughter won the $500 Riv Gift Certificate raffle.
I'm trying to build the war-chest to kick off a new project. At the same
time, the stable is filled to capacity and I've simply got to thin the herd
a little bit. So, I'm offering three of my bikes up for sale. All are
very Rivendellish but are each very different from the other two. Three
different wheel sizes even! My saddle height is 75.5cm. PBH of 86cm.

Bike 1: 56cm 1992 Bridgestone RB-1. This bike is stock, except for tires,
chain and bar tape. Read the catalog from Sheldon Brown to see exactly
what it has on it. I picked this up on eBay to keep at a family vacation
house in Illinois. When I got it, it seemed nearly unridden. I put on
Ruffy Tuffys (700x28), cloth bar tape, and a new chain, and rode it about
500 miles over two vacations. It's still there in Illinois, but family
drama makes it so we won't be vacationing there anymore. Furthermore, it
fits me like a racing bike, so I consider it 2-3cm too small for me now.
Let me know if you want to talk about this bike. I've got pictures and
even a youtube video for it that I can't link from work. Contact me
offline and we can get into it. Seeking $750 shipped. I'm open to having
the bike shipped to me and then parting it out, so if you are dying for the
frameset, let me know. The 1992 was the last year of standard diameter
frame tubes, but preceded the 1993 which had the bi-plane fork crown.

Bike 2: 22" 1985 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport. This is another bike that
I acquired in a virtually stock condition. I did a full overhaul on it,
and sold the stock cockpit to Montclair Bobby B. I put on a Tech Deluxe
stem, 46cm Noodle bars, and Silver barcon shifters. Black B-17 saddle, and
Soma New Express folding 26x1.75 tires. Highlights include a nice low Q
Specialized crankset with round rings, Shimano Deerhead derailers. Bolt on
wheels with immortal Specialized sealed bearing hubs. Bomber 36 hole
wheels. Seeking $400 and local pickup or delivery (I'm in the East Bay not
far from Riv HQ). I think of it as a very solid adventure touring bike.
Like if you don't have $3500 for a 56cm Atlantis, this may tide you over
for 15% of the price. Plenty of pics including the ones documenting the
restoration are on my flicker (my flickr handle is Hillbubba). Contact me
offlist to discuss.

Bike 3: This is the one I'm least eager to part with, partially because I
don't think many other people will love it like I do. It is a 60cm 1984
Miyata 912.

Liesl,
I would love to meet up - but I don't live in Madison. My Little brother
lives up there and me and the SO have talked about moving up there. We like
the feel and the bike-ness of it. Not sure we can leave Durham, NC, though.
It's a good problem to have, to love too many places. :)

And onto the subject - yes - I would love to be in a swank jenifer st
retreat, too.

I can picture a nice day:
Get up, paddle across the lake and back
Bike down to new glarus brewery
bike home
fall asleep watching the sun go down.

[RBW] New to me Atlantis

2013-06-06 Thread WETH
Superlatives are inadequate. I am thrilled and contented with my Atlantis.
This bike makes me want to "just ride" and ride and ride and ride.
My thanks to Matt Gilkey (for a great transaction on the frame, fork,hs, and
stem) and Peter G (handlebars and both sets of brake levers.). Brian Tester
answered my many questions on parts with much patience. Thanks to his advice
the bike came together well. Any problems rest solely with the mechanic (me).

The bike rides amazingly well. Already owning a Surly LHT, I was unprepared
for such a fabulous ride: quick, steady, nimble. I assumed the ride of LHT and
the Atlantis would be the same. In defense of my Surly, it is loaded down with
racks and Saddlesacks full of too much stuff. The 26x2.15 Big Apples give the
same supple ride as the 26x2.35s on my Surly. I haven't ridden drop bars in
over 20 years, but I find the Noodles incredibly comfortable for long
distances. The Surly will remain for commuting and the Atlantis will be ridden
on long weekend and the ocassional weekday rambles!

Over the last two days I rode 100 miles around D.C. and along the C&O Canal.
Here are some photos from out in the wild: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjFPBw5e
I rode on mixed use trails, the gravel C&O canal towpath, and roads. The
Atlantis handled all surfaces and situations well. I will stop gushing, though
I could not be more pleased with a bike. Bar tape arrives Monday!

I should also thank this group for the generous sharing of knowledge.
Thanks.
Erl

[RBW] Re: Am I nuts?

2013-06-06 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I know the Rivs are tough...I'm just not willing to bang mine up. The
trails I ride WILL eventually beat up any bike I ride, and even though I'm
not riding recklessly bike and rider inevitably will tumble; the odds are
just too great on this type of terrain. There are some fast/flowy sections
I would ride my SO... but there are other technical, rooty, rocky and steep
parts I will only ride my MTB on. It's also due to the frame sizing...
I've sized my SO and Bomba (larger) for long distance pedaling on fairly
predictable terrain; my MTB frame is sized (smaller) for tight, technical
gnarly stuff.

Granted, it's a personal choice... but I'd be really surprised (and frankly
delighted) to run into a Riv on the MTB trails near where I live.

that's too bad James... and from my undergrad Alma mater to boot. You've

2013-06-06 Thread Christopher Murray
Awesome cartoon but please oh please oh please let's not let this develop into
an anti- carbon discussion. Lets just let everyone ride whatever kind of bike
it is they want to ride and be happy that they are out there riding. We should
be celebrating our sameness (bikes) and not fighting over our differences
(steel vs cf, tire width, position, etc.).

Cheers!

That sounds tempting, but don't you worry eventually you may end up thrashing
your SO? I mean Wissahickon is pretty rocky, right? Preserve the SO for long
life; I say get yourself a nice steel MTB. In fact you should bring your SO up
to Lambertville some time. I'll give you an awesome tour of our local MTB
trails (and you can even try out my spare Niner MCR steel 29er). Save your SO
for the pub ride, later. In fact I'll bring MY SO, too.
Peace,

Re: [RBW] Re: Am I nuts?

2013-06-06 Thread Eric Platt
Guess it depends on the trails. There are some around here where I can
ride my SO. Others are tracks so deep the cranks hit the sides and with
enough fall-offs that I'd prefer wider tires and some sort of shock. In
fact, many of the trails in Minnesota now seem to be maintained/modified
specifically for shocked bikes.

Will still say go for it. The SO will stand up to the abuse. Mine handles
my oversized body on it with no complaint and that's certainly more stress
than a trail will cause.
