Great idea, Michael. I think 2-3 contrasting examples of packing up for an
S24O would be entertaining. It would be amusing to see what folks choose
to take, how they stuff their bags, and how gear is stowed on bikes. It
could be similar to the website staff bikes gallery that does a great job
of showing different builds, but with more details and more educational
benefit for the newbie camper.

Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-07 Thread Hugh Smitham
I'd be good with the Southern Sierra on Manny's date. Just wondering
though is it worth a 4 hour drive 8 hour RT for two days? Shall we
make it at least three? Or would that cause a drop off in
participation?

Mike since you know the area let's talk route. I imagine we would have
have a meet up spot, then ride to a base camp with a next day Rumble.
Just throwing it out there perhaps Meet at Shaver lake and ride to
Huntington Lake 22 miles for camping then the next day ride out
perhaps toward Kaiser peak on some of those graded dirt roads? Or meet
at Huntington Lake and ride the 24 miles toward Florence Lake? Let me
know what you think? If this firms up I'll look for a USGS map of the
area.

[RBW] Re: Country Bike In-The-City Ramble, Portland Oregon, Sunday 9 June

2013-06-07 Thread Shawn Granton
Just bumping this thread as the ride is this Sunday. Hope to see some of
you fine folk there. I managed to do a bunch of routing and riding this
week, and I guarantee an interesting ride.

Some additional things to note about this ride:

   - There is quite a bit of unpaved action in various forms. I'd say less
than 50% but more than 30%.
   - Estimated cumulative elevation gain is 1,500 feet, if you care about
   these things.
   - Don't be afraid to walk your bike. At some points, you're GOING TO
   HAVE TO.
   - This ride will meander a LOT. The most direct route between point A
and point B may be fast, but it can be boring.
   - You will be rewarded with quite a bit of secret paths and cut throughs.

yours, Shawn

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-07 Thread Mike Schiller
Hugh, The road from Shaver to Huntington has a lot more traffic. The best
roads are up to Kaiser Pass and then to either Edison lake or Florence
lake. Even though it's only ~27 miles one way to each, there is a lot of
climbing and the downhills are slow due to the narrow winding roads.

I don't know if the consensus is day rides from a base camp or an overnight
to one of the lakes? A round-trip to one of the lakes would be like 50+
miles and 5000+' of climbing. Obviously the s24o would be 1/2 of that.
There is a nice cafe and store at Edison near the campground and showers.
There is also a day 3 option to go around Kaiser Peak and stay at a more
primitive campsite off of Stump springs rd.

This is one of the rare places you can ride deep into the Sierras on your
bike but you have to work for it.

SLO would be a lot gentler riding and access by train.

also that weekend works good for me.

When I started following rbw discussions four years ago it seems like
there were frequent debates about things like carbon vs steel that would go
on for days with literally hundreds of posts. I understand that for long
term members those debates were just a tedious rehash of stuff that they
had seen here before but to a new member like me they were really
compelling and I miss them. These days I just pop in from time to time to
see what’s for sale but I happened to click on this and got a little

I don't think it's unreasonable at all to ask members *not* to bad mouth CF
without evidence of its defects. This is simply asking listers to be
reasonable. Mere expression of bias against this, that, or the other
because one doesn't happen to like it is clearly irrational and it is a
great way to degrade the content and tone of a list!

To say that today's CF bicycles are dangerous because they can fail
suddenly with traumatic results for the rider is a reasonable thing to do,
as long as one's data is up to date. Saying that billboard graphics are
ugly compared to understated graphics is fine as long as one grants
sufficient leeway to others' tastes. Saying that tight lycra looks funny on
fat people is fine as long as one is not cruel. But simply to sneer at
people who do things differently ... well I don't have to complete the

Some additional things to note about this ride:
There is quite a bit of unpaved action in various forms. I'd say less than
 50% but more than 30%.
Estimated cumulative elevation gain is 1,500 feet, if you care about these
 things.
Don't be afraid to walk your bike. At some points, you're GOING TO HAVE TO.
This ride will meander a LOT. The most direct route between point A and point
B may be fast, but it can be boring.
You will be rewarded with quite a bit of secret paths and cut throughs.

[RBW] Portland area riders: Midweek S24O to Oxbow Park, Monday 24 June

2013-06-07 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello folks, especially those in the Portland area!

I just posted a s24o trip to the Pedalpalooza calendar.
http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/viewpp2013.php#24-3897
It's to Oxbow Park on the Sandy River on Monday June 24th. I'm limiting the
trip to 12 people for now but may open it up to more if interest is there.
This ride is ideal for those of us who don't have a typical Mon-Fri 9-5
schedule, but the short distance of the ride (around 10 miles) means that
even those that do work regular hours could make it out after work on
Monday and get into work on/near time on Tuesday. To note: I don't need to
be back to Portland until later afternoon, but Andy (who is also going)
will be heading up an early departure.

Here's the deets:

*Monday June 24
MIDWEEK BIKE CAMPING (S240) TO OXBOW*
TBA (Meeting at a Gresham MAX stop, you will get full details when you
register)
6:00pm meetup, Depart MAX at 6:30pm, return to PDX late morning
Whether you're funemployed or can get off work a little early, a quick
little weekday camping excursion is a lot of fun. A 10 mile ride (approx.)
from the MAX in Gresham to Oxbow on the Sandy. Moderate traffic/terrain. We
should get there before dark, but remember bike lights. You can probably
make it to work on time Tuesday! Campsites $22/night, divvied up
appropriately. Bring all the things you would need for an overnight camping
trip. Previous bike camping experience recommended. Grocery stop in
Gresham.
Limited to 12 people, register here:
http://oxbowjune2013s24o.eventbrite.com/

If you have any questions, please let me know.
I also hope to pull off a couple more midweek s24os over the summer. I'll
keep you folks posted.

yours,
Shawn

they've tested it out so it's not going to stick odd stuff like that. This
testing program is not really a test, it's more of a promo first .
Seeing it's going to be released in a matter of days , and people are just
getting their test saddles it doesn't leave any time for testing

[RBW] FS~56 Sam Hillborne, single top tube. Blue w/cream head tube

2013-06-07 Thread frank_a
 Hi All,
For sale is a 56 Sam Hillborne. It's the single top tube frame special
they had on the site a month or two ago. I bought it directly from
Rivendell. It's in outstanding condition, only the drop outs and fork ends
show evidence of the build up. There is a very faint paint scratch at the
top of the seat lug, which came to me that way from Rivendell. The double
TT's are 1225.00. These single TT's are all gone but I paid 1165.00 shipped
for this one. (My friend has a double TT Sam, same size and I don't notice
any difference in feel)
This was a bit of an impulse buy...the bike rides great but I have a Riv
Custom, 2 Quickbeams and a Saluki. The Sam most duplicates my custom as far
as purpose so it's up for sale. Please see the photos:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/8531240@N06/sets/72157633993806845/925.00
plus actual shipping.

Asking 900.00 plus actual shipping.

 Thanks,
 - Frank

[RBW] Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?

2013-06-07 Thread jinxed
I picked up some Newbaums tape recently with plans to try cloth...once
again. I've done this a few times in the past with different bars, but
never been happy with the result for two reasons. First off I found it too
thin for comfort, and on top of that could never get it wrapped well around
the levers. I always ended up with gaps in one place and all bunched up in
others. This really bugs me because I pride myself with normal cork wrap. I
can wrap super clean and even with the cheater piece or without using the
figure eight approach. Using the narrow, less stretchy cloth I end up with
a mess. Ive tried adding a cheater, and even a double figure eight that
just created a big mass.

I have been mentally preparing a plan of attack while waiting on my
repaint. I'm going back to my tried and true mustache bar with old dia-comp
non-aero levers. My thinking was this: If I tighten down the levers on the
bar, then place some tape over the clamp to hold it in place while I back
off the lever body completely, I would have a much smaller obstacle to wrap
around with the cloth. Could I essentially leave the threaded portion of
the clamp sticking out and then bolt the body back down on top of it once
done? I plan to pre wrap the ends of the bar up to the levers with some
left over cateye cloth to solve the cush issue. The nittos plethora of
curves dont help this issue, but the smaller bodies of the old diacomp do a
little. FYI, I do not wrap the shifter cables coming from the bar ends, I
just leave them dangle.

Dumb idea? Anyone have a better technique for going around the brake lever
body bolted in place? Pictures, procedures, postulations? Oh and before you
suggest it, I attempted the Jim Varnum harlequin method onceyea...took
me a few beers and some therapy to get over that episode in the garage.
(ok...the therapy was a joke. the beers weren't.)

[RBW] Re: Ram + Parigi Roubaix + Stan's: report

2013-06-07 Thread Ron Mc
Patrick, my buddy had a 1x-crankR click last weekend and he was ready to
turn around until we saw he had a pedal leaking grease. It was clicking at
the bottom. I'm friction-shifting 8 on my Moser and loving it, Later this
month I'm going to help my daughter set up a Shimano 9 using Microshift bar
ends. I went with the 9 because the only sensible wide cassette with a
road crank is changing 3 cogs on a Miche to end up with
13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-29. Otherwise all the available cassettes are made
for a compact cranks.
Have more than 100 on my Parigi tubulars and no flats or even marks in the
tread. I've been inspecting for cuts at rest stops. But I'm heading way
out to the hill country this weekend (Fredericksburg-Harper) and will be
riding much rougher roads - I'm bringing Stan's and Zap-a-gap

On Friday, June 7, 2013 6:49:34 PM UTC-5, Patrick Moore wrote:

Well, I've been riding the Ram/Parigi Roubaix and ya know what? No flats
 in a hundred miles!

In other news: the Ram feels really nice -- as good as my customs. I
continue to tweak the saddle-bar-height relationship -- we're looking at
about 1 difference right now, and that could decrease -- but with our warm
weather winds I've been riding recently 8 miles at a stretch into headwinds
and it feels quite good. I use no gloves, but the very sensitive heel of my
left hand is surprisingly comfortable. I may have to raise the brake bodies
a wee bit on the bar's curve.

I think I've got the saddle where it needs to be -- perhaps a wee bit too
high, but the position is the wonderful (and on some bikes, elusive)
perfect spot where you feel you are perfectly far behind the bb so that
there is no awkwardness either while spinning fast or while torquing hard
 to gain momentum.

The 7-speed Dura Ace system, in indexed mode, requires an annoying fine
tune between over- and under-shifting: reminds me why I've not used
indexing for 20+ years until now -- hell, even derailleurs are newish. I
use it now because, dammit, I have a 7400 indexing system and it *will*
work for me. There is a very mild rattle once a crank rotation that must
come from the rear derailleur because it's not from the front; but it's
mild enough that I attribute it to default derailleur behavior and not the
 indexing.

I find that, unladen, the Ram cruises nicely in the 74 gear and that the
70 gear feels light, proof to me of pedaling efficiency, something I
don't find with every bike. With some bikes, ~75 feels overgeared. I
assume this has to do with very many things, but perhaps among them are the
 tires and the fit/position.

Funny, I tend to do most of my riding in the 16-17-18 range: 74, 70, and
66, with a drop to 60 for steeper uphills.

The Ram has carried up to 47 lb in the rear (Fly) with just a bit of
stress, and it handles rear loads of 35 lb without any qualms. Overall, for
me, that very nice combination of unladen spriteliness and rear load
capacity. I managed to bust one of the Y struts holding the single rack
strut to the seatstay braze ons, so I scavenged another single strut from
the Logo to replace it as shown. The other seatstay braze on can hold a

I think I'm going to convert it into a fixed gear (though that will mean
Dremeling off the shifter braze-ons and the derailleur hangar).

Those are officially weird bars. My buddy has Salsa woodchippers on his

and she gets her own mirror and bell, which I think she rings at him. But
the Cannondale tandem was actually for his very tall previous wife and,
while she rides the Cannondale, it's way too big for his very short wife.
He bought a Santana that fits her, and is planning to swap out the

I actually think these look like pretty useful bars. I've made something
similar with flipped On One Marys with bar ends mounted at the forward

I'm happy to see that bar makers are taking advantage of removable face

2013-06-07 Thread frank_a
Hi All,
For sale is a 56 Sam Hillborne frame set. It's the single top tube frame
special they had on the site a month or two ago. I bought it directly from
Rivendell. It's in outstanding condition, only the drop outs and fork ends
show evidence of the build up. There is a very faint paint scratch at the
top of the seat lug, which came to me that way from Rivendell. Sale
includes headset, bottom bracket and unused seat post as supplied by
Rivendell.

Please see the photos:

Asking 900.00 plus actual shipping.

Please reply off list.

 Thanks,

brake levers again, and done. It's neat and clean, and doesn't have the
bunched-up feel that you get when you criss-cross the cork tape around the
brake levers. The cloth tape is strong enough that it won't be cut when you
tighten the brake levers against it. (It probably wouldn't work with cork
tape.)

If you plan to shellac, also do this before you attach the brake levers, so
you don't get shellac all over the hoods.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look

2013-06-07 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I've had a chance to take about a 10 mile ride today after work which
included a bit of climbing and, of course, some descents to go along with
the climbs.

The first couple of miles I have to admit I stopped more than started while
I tweaked the angle of the saddle. Okay, I had to stop three times to get
it right but I do believe it's good now. This isn't really any different
than any of the leather Brooks I own - always a bit finicky at first then
locked in.

Since this was an urban ride on roads that vary from freshly paved to badly
in need of help I was able to get a pretty good feel for the saddle in a
variety of conditions. Long distance will have to wait till the actual
weekend though.

My first impression on a real ride was that the saddle didn't need any
breaking in. Admittedly I'm a big guy and have never had to spend a whole
lot of time breaking in a leather Brooks. In fact my Select, stiffest of
the bunch, felt pretty good from the outset and while it has adapted a bit
since November when it was new, I've never felt uncomfortable.

That being said, the C-17 has been comfortable from the get go as well
(angle not withstanding). I can feel some give in it when going over bumps
(that I don't see - usually I use my legs as shocks on the ones I do). It
doesn't feel like it's giving to much and needs to be tightened, just a
little cushioning. I'm not sure how much lighter folks might fare but I
suspect it's all good.

In fact, once I'd adjusted the angle, the biggest thing I noticed about the
saddle is that I didn't actually notice it. Since all my bikes use one B-17
or another I'm pretty used to having more or less the same experience on
all my bikes - thus I really only notice anything when something is 'off.'

The ride was fun and I'm looking forward to giving it a longer workout this
weekend.

Did it stick to your clothes like you thought it would?

Umm..sort of and sort of not. The top of the saddle, the part that is
partially cloth, is fine. It doesn't stick or drag on my clothes. I tend to
wear MUSA knickers, shorts of the same sorts of materials, and Columbia
convertible pants (wear 'em long to work and shorts on the way home). I
can't say how jeans or other actual natural material might do, but the man
made fibers I wear don't have an issue with the top of the saddle.

But...and this has only happened twice in a bunch of dismounts, the bottom
edge of the saddle is more or less exposed rubber. When I've swung my leg
up to clear the saddle and dismount I have had it snag a bit on the fabric.
The first time it happened I stopped, sat back down, and tried again. The
second time I just twisted a bit and my leg came free. As I dismount when
stopped I don't think there'll be a problem. If, however, you are one of
those who dismounts while coasting it's something to think about.

I expect this will stop as the rubber gets rubbed a bit more. And,
honestly, this could easily happen on the rougher bit of leather on the
bottom edge of a new Brooks leather saddle - it's not like I haven't gotten
myself caught on the nose once or twice (or thrice...). Still it felt like
cloth catching on rubber.

I also had another concern this morning. Normally I leave my helmet out to
dry out on my lanai but for some reason last night I slung the helmet
straps over the nose of the saddle. Remember, this saddle is 'natural.'
Well this morning I discovered an ugly stap mark underneath the wear the
helmet strap had been. Shoots. I didn't realize my strap was that sweaty. I
figured I'd be careful in the future and thought about how I'd clean this
up. I locked the bike up at work (we have a combo locked cage with racks)
and did my eight hours.

When I came out the mark was gone. Clearly it was just moisture.

I guess this makes sense. As I recall from prior days plastic saddles that
aren't at all absorbent just get slick and icky when they get wet (from
rain or more likely, sweat). Leather, of course, does absorb a bit. Well
apparently so does the fabric on the saddle. What this means in the long
run I don't know, but it dried out and no mark was left.

Given how folks sweat this might, on the natural saddle, lead to moisture
marks one might not wish to explain. :-)

In any case, after a short 10 mile ride I'm happy with the saddle.

Now, as for it's looks. I actually like the thing. No, it's not leather,
but it's not a plastic bit of awfulness either. It looks like a quality
saddle. Do I like the looks more than my leather saddles...not, not really,
but it's not, at least to my mind, ugly. In fact it matches my Acorn bags
on the Hunq fairly well so it doesn't look out of place at all.

That's it for now. I'll have a long ride this weekend (hopefully) and will
report back again on how I feel after at least a couple of dozen miles.

Aloha,

Bob

The Sierra option means either a drive or a hot slog across the valley.
OTH, once there, the altitude means cooler temps. Mike is correct about
the temps around Paso Robles / Templeton / Atascadero area being hot.
There is a serious range of hills east of SLO that makes that valley a lot
warmer than the coast. San Simeon / Cayucos / Moro Bay can be considerably
cooler.

As Manny pointed out, the date is the key, then we worry about the

Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-07 Thread Mike Schiller
the inland routes are too hot for summer. The See Cyn route is close to the
ocean and would be fine. We would need to come up with another ride that
goes north and is along the coast during mid day and afternoon. Maybe
Stagecoach rd to Tv Tower rd to the coast and back thru Morro Bay.
