Re: [RBW] TrunkSack vs. Saddlebag

2014-03-21 Thread ascpgh
I had that revelation in college. Textbooks the worst; so dense they
shifted inside any luggage but when I strapped the book pack to my rear
rack to "alleviate" the problem it became worse. It made my bike steer
oddly, resist my body english and climbing out of the saddle nearly threw
me off it. Lack of information limited realistic analysis or insight at the
time.

Apparently a little detachment to isolate a load from the bike is good and
the mounting location produces variations unique to any particular bike.
I'v been using a Nelson Longflap saddlebag for commuting for eight years
now.

I too recently got this bag.

I've been using a large Carradice bag for several years but it wasn't quite
large enough for things I carry on my daily commute.

Boy is the Saddlesack a great bag.
Great design, very practical and clearly designed by folks who use what they
make/sell.
Plus it passes the wife test. When Patrysh first saw it, I could see that she

this is exactly what I've been trying to avoid, and I'm feeling successful.
Of course we have the advantage here of winter being the most desirable
time to ride, so I've improved my strength through the past season. Now my
old Raleigh is starting to look like a boat anchor with everything hanging
on it. However, in spite of its 30 lbs, its function seem to get better
and better. I think I'll call it the X-1.

[RBW] Re: Boat Anchoring

2014-03-21 Thread Scott G.
My friend Dale explained as you get older the bike has to get
lighter to maintain a constant speed.

So 20 somethings should ride Raleigh DL-1s, 60 somethings
get steel Colnagos with carbon tubular wheels.
Once you reach 70, special carbon rando bikes with FMB 40mm
tubies.

Re: [RBW] Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-21 Thread Minh
Well hope Emily comes back and gives us her verdict. My 2 cents, if you
have to ask to spend money then you need to think about it some more. i
have a QB and a Hillborne, both are great bikes but sometimes we get too
romantic about it. You can get a similiar ride (thank goodness, and no
doubt due to RBW existing) from other brands. Even a Hillborne will give
you a similar ride to an Atlantis. Of course the Atlantis is nicer, and
there's nothing wrong with wanting that, but don't let that sway you too
much, functionally it's not better then other options.

Also, 4K for a fully built Atlantis is OK to me, it is second-hand, if it's
a typical RBW build, but not great. again just my 2 cents.

[RBW] Re: TrunkSack vs. Saddlebag

2014-03-21 Thread ted
John,

Another option is to zip tie a medium wald basket to your rack lengthwise.
I have that arrangement on my 56cm SimpleOne currently. The basket is well
foreword (almost touches my legs), and as low as possible (rack touches
fender, though my fender is well off the tire). I have also used a Baggins
Country bag but on different bikes. I don't think there is much difference
in the handling for similar loads. I have not used a real trunk sack, so I
can't say if my experience differs from other responders (who say trunk
sacks wag the bike) because the basket works differently, or because of
different positioning, or just because I am an insensitive or unobservant
rider.

[RBW] Creative Berthoud Saddle Rack lashing ideas

2014-03-21 Thread Minh
I have one of the Berthoud saddle bags that comes with the 'rack' that
cradles the bag and attaches to the seatpost. Sometimes when i go out i'll
leave the bag at home (mainly because i don't want to take the bag off/on
due to too many stops during my ride). Staring at the empty rack i've
tried to come up with ways to lash things to the rack. Has anyone with
this rack come up with creative ways to carry things? I guess i could just
wrap whatever in a big sheet and tie it up with twine? But wanted
something a little more elegant!

And for a picture of said rack, here's Tom M's beautiful Bombadil!

Plenty of room on my Orange Sam ( now sold).

[RBW] Re: Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-21 Thread redsydude
I have no advice but here is an anode to your cathode. My whole life I’ve
been a $200 bike person. Last year I owned four of them and I was sick of
the clutter so I gathered together one groupset of the best parts, sold or
gave away everything else and bought a new Sam Hillborne frameset. I
figure I have 10x$200 in it and consider it a bargain. I split my time
between two cities so I’m back on craigslist looking for another $200 bike.
When I think about the whole craigslist transaction hassle and the time and
money to get the bike running OK, $200 bikes now seem outrageously
overpriced to me.

[RBW] Re: Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-21 Thread Clayton
Hi Emily,

I bought my Atlantis new in '99 or so. I have owned many bikes, but my
Atlantis is the one bike I will never sell. I love it. I have had 3 back
surgeries and is the most comfortable bike I have ridden. I don't own a
car, so I ride this bike daily and have hauled 80 lbs or more. I have
stripped off all the racks and fenders, installed 26" x 2.35" tires and
ridden it on easy trails. I have worn out several component groups, and it
is on it's third paint job (powder coat this time). There are other bikes
that are less expensive and work very well, such as the Surly long haul
trucker and others, but they, in my mind are like appliances.
Refrigerators, tool box, vacuum cleaners. The Atlantis is a satori,
something I can stare at for hours like a TV. Again, you probably can find
bikes that are functionally equal, and weigh less, but they won't be a Riv
and they won't be an Atlantis. Life is short. Get a good bike.

2014-03-21 Thread Anne Paulson
Irresponsible? Not irresponsible at all. The Atlantis is super-duper
for road and gravel tours. I've taken mine across the US twice, as
well as on many other tours.

If you can afford it and you'll ride it, I say go for it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-21 Thread Jim Bronson
Awesome post redsydude

I have a bike that I paid like $160 for off of Ebay and probably wasn't
worth even that, an old early 80s gas pipe Nishiki. It's what I use when I
need to ride somewhere and lock up a bike. I keep thinking I will make
some improvements, but then looking at the frame, it's not really worth it.
So I just fix what breaks or falls off (literally, I have had parts fall
off, like for example the interruptor brake levers) with the cheapest
replacement parts available. I taco-ed the original front wheel making a
slow left hand turn and replaced it with a $37 front wheel with the
roughest bearings I have ever felt. It works well enough.

My Rivendell is what I ride everywhere else. It will never be tamed by a
lock. You can't compare it to a pos $200 craigslist bike. It just brings
me way more joy than that.

On a club ride last weekend, pal Frank (on a racked and fendered Bilenky)
and I (on a racked and fendered Saluki -not far different from an Atlantis)
pulled away at 18 - 20 avg from the F85/Roubaix pack, just because we were
felling perky. The Saluki feels comfortable, not heavy. (Tires are GB
Oursons) When a bike feels good, you can feel fast. I imagine Atlantis
might work on similar lines.

Re: [RBW] Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2014-03-21 Thread Jim Bronson
Is that like the Golf Plus I've seen in Germany?

Will it fit 8 foot 2x4s?? My Rondo can, just lay the back seats and front
passenger seat flat and position the boards diagonally, front right to back
left. I've brought home 20+ that way.

It will be a lame gas automatic here. I will stick with my Kia Rondo

[RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-21 Thread hobie
I think the Hetres 650b tires are fantastic! Very fast, plenty fat for
gravel. I like what Jan is doing. I'd like to see fatter tires from Jan
especially in the 29/700 size. Say 29x2.0. I doubt he will because most of
the bikes he reviews or rides can only handle up to 40mm? Having more
choices is a good thing. Both Jan and Grant do ride different terrain it
seems. So how they design a tire has a lot to do with their hood. I
remember buying a wool long sleeve jersey from Riv and returning it because
the turtleneck was to low. My reason for returning was. "This won't work on
the east coast". That was about 6 years ago. If Grant could have ridden NYC
this year he would know what I'm talking about. Had to be the coldest
winter ever. I think Grant even said he doesn't know "COLD". My favorite
tire of all and it's rarely ever mentioned is the Schwalbe Super Moto at
29x2.35. Very big tires but super super fast. I'm using the Motos on a Jeff
Jones Diamond frame w. a Rohloff rear/ Paul 135mm front hub. This is the
fastest most stable ride ever. Once up to speed the bike motors along like
an auto. It's kinda like the A-10 bomber. The straight chain line and lack
of drag from a cassette, derailler, precise shifting etc makes this bike
move very very fast. The bike is not lightweight but I've gotten up some
hills the fastest ever in my life time. Some hills, not all. If I have
enough speed going into a climb and can sustain it, nothing has come
close. I've used this same bike w. Maxxis Ardent 2.4 front and rear in the
woods. The extra weight of the Rohloff in the rear for east coast mtn.
biking is very noticeable. I prefer a lighter bike for mtn biking. I
presently have a Surly ECR for mtn. biking. The rims are Blunt front,
Pacenti DL 31 rear/ Hadley SS 5 cogs. Knard front and rear tires. Great,
fast stable ride for tech. MTN biking. I'm using a 165mm crank because of
the low BB on the ECR. BIG TIRES ARE SUPER MOTO!

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

Hobie: do you know how much this tire weighs? I couldn't find that figure.

If it is sufficiently lighter than the Big Apple, it will be a very nice
tire for the sandy soils around here.

[RBW] Wtb a quickbeam 54cm

Someone sell me a 54cm Quickbeam, an orange one if possible. (A 56 could work
too).

I am particular about two things:
Upper fork eyelets are a must have.
Kickstand plate is a must not have.

Thanks all :) - reply offlist

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-21 Thread jimmy johnsen
Patrick. The Schwalbe website list them as 680 grams. Aren't the Apples wire
bead? I don't ride wire bead tires. I think they are slow. I use to ride sew
ups or tubulars on the track and road. A folding tire comes closer to the feel
and speed of a sew up and will always beat a wire bead. Jan has more of a
vintage roadie mentality. Grant's vibe is more recreational rider. I can't
believe Grant doesn't carry the Super Motos. I like speed and comfort, not
drag. You might as well have fast tires. There are plenty of other things on a
bike to slow you down. You don't need something holding you back. So have the
fastest tires. The only tire Grant designed that I liked was the Fatty Rump and
that didn't come close to the Hetres. Both on the trail and road the Hetres
rolled much better then Rump. Did I say I really like the Super Motos? I
inflate them super high for the road and never feel bumps because of the volume
and width of my rims. Maybe it's
the combo of all the components on my present ride that it handles so well.
Finding the right mix can be a challenge. There is nothing wrong with going
fast. I still enjoy what's going on around me, but just at a faster pace. I
don't know how the Motos will handle on anything other then my rides which is a
mix of dirt/ hard pack and road. Just my opinion. Hobie

Re: [RBW] Re: New version of the AllRounder?

2014-03-21 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I agree with Leslie regarding a 650b Hilsen. I have a Roadeo, a 650b
Ram and a 650b Hilsen, and if I could only choose one, then the Hilsen
can handle 100% of my current riding needs--I would need to pull off
and put on racks/fenders/tires/wheelsets depending upon my needs, but
it would do it all. It is a great all-rounder--you can set it up to
go fast--minimally encumbered or get a kickstand, front and rear racks
and do some light touring.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. 680 grams is 200 grams less than the original 700cX2.35 Big Apples,
wire bead, and about 100 grams less than the "Litespeed" folding version.

I may just try those some day. Right now I have the superest lighter-est
Furious Freds on the Fargo, but they measure a paltry 55 mm on the 44 mm
rims.

With tubeless and Stan's the Super Moto should be fine.

Does wire bead really slow a tire down? How would it affect the factors
that determine rolling resistance -- ie, if tread depth and material, and
sidewall suppleness are the same for all?

#2: if anyone wants to buy a pair of VG 622X2.35 Weirwolfs, I will sell the
pair for $50 + shipping.

Ray, the link to risers was much appreciated as was the link to the Transit
racks at Performance. Those are half the price of comparable Yakima product
through REI. Though I have high praise for Yakima and REI for always standing
behind their products for me.
Matt, the link to the Hollywood rack is helpful as I now have four brands to
compare. I also do want one that I can reduce to 2 bikes when not hauling 4.
Thanks.
Davidcha, thanks for your feedback on the Thule hanging rack.
Hugh, you are right, this is expensive, especially as I need to add in cost of
the hitch. But I have gotten good at rationalizing expenditures on my Rivbikes
and Riv inspired bikes.
Steve and Patrick, I am a fan of a utilitarian vehicle. I used to really want
a Honda Element for that reason. I remain disappointed they never made it in a
diesel. And Steve, I understand how nice it would be to travel with the bikes
inside with me. My problem is I need seating for four and room for four bikes.
Thanks again.
Erl

[RBW] Re: Wtb a quickbeam 54cm

2014-03-21 Thread Philip Williamson
So that narrows it to an orange one, right?

Green Quickbeams = no extra mid-fork eyelets, no kickstand plate
Orange Quickbeam = yes extra eyelets, no kickstand plate
Silver Quickbeam = yes extra eyelets, yes kickstand plate

Personally, I'd take a kickstand plate over the extraneous eyelets, but I'm
happy having neither. The M12 is the canonical QB rack, IMO, but tastes
vary.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-21 Thread jimmy johnsen
Patrick. Have any land speed/track records been broken on wire beads recently?
If fat tires can be made lightweight I'll buy them. The Surly Knard 29x3 come
in wire bead and folding. The wire version might last longer and have better
protection but I'd much rather ride the lighter folding tire. They rotate
quicker and have a sprinty/lively quality. What 44mm rims are you using? The
Duallys? Have you tried the Surly Knard 700x41? I'm riding a heavy bike w. the
Motos but if I can save some weight I will.

On Friday, March 21, 2014 3:37 PM, Patrick Moore wrote:

Thanks. 680 grams is 200 grams less than the original 700cX2.35 Big Apples,
wire bead, and about 100 grams less than the "Litespeed" folding version.

I may just try those some day. Right now I have the superest lighter-est
Furious Freds on the Fargo, but they measure a paltry 55 mm on the 44 mm rims.

With tubeless and Stan's the Super Moto should be fine.

Does wire bead really slow a tire down? How would it affect the factors that
determine rolling resistance -- ie, if tread depth and material, and sidewall
suppleness are the same for all?

#2: if anyone wants to buy a pair of VG 622X2.35 Weirwolfs, I will sell the
pair for $50 + shipping.

Patrick. The Schwalbe website list them as 680 grams. Aren't the Apples wire

and speed of a sew up and will always beat a wire bead.
Hobie

from a cassette, derailler, precise shifting etc makes this bike move very very
fast. The bike is not lightweight but I've gotten up some hills the fastest
ever in my life time. Some hills, not all. If I have enough speed going into a
climb and can sustain it, nothing has come close.  I've used this same bike w.
Maxxis Ardent 2.4 front and rear in the woods. The extra weight of the Rohloff
in the rear for east coast mtn. biking is very noticeable. I prefer a lighter
bike for mtn biking. I presently have a Surly ECR for mtn. biking. The rims are
Blunt front, Pacenti DL 31 rear/ Hadley SS 5 cogs. Knard front and rear tires.
Great, fast stable ride for tech. MTN biking. I'm using a 165mm crank because
of the low BB on the
ECR. BIG TIRES ARE SUPER MOTO!

Re: [RBW] Re: Wtb a quickbeam 54cm

2014-03-21 Thread JL
Yes. It almost certainly will. I was allowing for repaints or possible
transition period models with green paint and fork eyelets (do those exist?). I
don't know what it is about kickstands plates that bother me. I just don't like
the aesthetics of the plate and never use a kickstand. I don't have an "out of
sight, out of mind" personality. Rather, I get obsessive about small details.
The m12 racks are slick but the 32F has the same finish as my nitto rear rack
and would allow my to use Paul brakes without the rack being far out in front
of the fork blades.
The tragic thing is I could have bought one of two different beams a couple
months back but I was too wishy washy about the details and they both got away.
Oh well. I have plenty of time. :)

Also, taking everything down anphotographing it, I realize the $700 might
be a little high. Knocking it to $600 plus actual shipping for the whole
group. Again, the set functions extremely well, just has the scuffs that
came with it as I pieced it all together. It served me well, but like I
said, I'm after a different breed of bike.

Lastly, the Brooks Cambium is sold.

Thanks folks.

[RBW] Rivendell Chica Warrior Ride. Tomorrow! (3/22)

2014-03-21 Thread Manuel Acosta
Just got off the phone with the one and only RCW directly from her
temporary outpost at Riv BBH.
Confirmed ride tomorrow. 3/22
Meet at Riv HQ at 11ish for a mellow ramble abouts.

Proposed route involved some short city riding, mellow bike path riding,
then some creek crossing, stairs and rope swing action.
http://goo.gl/maps/2oo4Y

Making coffee on this ride will be a must so bring your preferred method of
coffee brewing.

Pretty mellow ride by "mannybiking" standards. Apparently I have a
reputation for "underestimating the grueling factor".

Far from grueling. Super mellow and chill.

Hope to see ya'll there!

Or, if one opts for a less expensive, but same genre-ed bike:

Surly LHT: $5.41 a month over 20 year period. (1300$)

If I had the intention of riding the bike for the rest of my life, I'd skip
the coffee shop a coupla times a month and get the Atlantis!!

But only if it is a *new, built by RBW*, Atlantis we are talking about.

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2014-03-21 Thread Anton Tutter
I have both roof-mounted bike racks (Yakima) and a 1.25" hitch mount
'hanging' style rack (Thule). I've never tried a platform hitch rack, but
I'm guessing that style would keep the bikes happier. The Thule has an
anti-sway mechanism by way of a hinge-down third clamp that secures the
seat tube. It prevents about 90% of the sway. However, what I don't like
about the hanging racks is that unless you use some sort of rag or piece of
foam between the arms and your bike's frame, it's easy to get scratching.
At least that's what I've observed with the Thule. Maybe the Saris or
Yakima are better, I don't know. Also keep in mind that if you have a
small car, all that extra weight back there will cause stability problems
driving. It creates a cantilever effect, so even though a fully loaded
rack with four bikes might only weigh 150lb, it feels like a lot more
because farther behind the rear axle than weight you might have in the
trunk. With a larger car, this might not have as much of an impact, but
with my current car (Mazda5) and former car (Mazda3) I definitely felt it.
The platform mounts will be even heavier than the hanging mounts. Also
keep in ming that having all those bikes on any hitch rack makes it
difficult to access the rear hatch (if not a sedan).

Three bikes on the roof? I never feel an effect on the car's stability.
But I agree it's a chore hoisting them up there. On the other hand, I also
don't have to finagle around with rags and bungee cords to make sure the
bikes don't get scratched up.

Anton

I still don't get how the bead affects the ride quality, whether for
comfort or speed. Can anyone explain? From Jan's testing it would seem that
the principal variable by an order of magnitude is casing construction.

But I'd like to know if it does, 'cuz if it does, I need to swap out the
wire bead Kojaks on the '03 for folding ones.

All,

I don't see how a wire bead could affect performance beyond the slight
weight difference. It just so happens most supple sidewall, thin tread
tires are folding bead. At least I think so.

[RBW] New Bike Day - Lavendar Saluki!

2014-03-21 Thread Tony DeFilippo
http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2014/03/new-bike-day.html

I'm quite satisfied to say that I've introduced another Riv to the East
Coast (to offset the big Atlantis I sent to Portland)... I got the bike
together and out for a quick test ride this afternoon and was grinning from
ear to ear. It fits, it looks great, it rides as good as any bike I've
ridden before... very stable and compared to my recent bikes (Atlantis,
Trek 650B, XO-3) is quite spritely. I've got some riding plans for the
weekend and will be sharing alot more pictures for sure.

Still not 100% on the color, but I'm going to enjoy it a bit before I make
any decisions on that front. Thanks very much to Amy for making this sale
work and taking such great care of the bike for the past 8 or 9 years!

[RBW] Saddlesack Medium and Biking to School

2014-03-21 Thread LeahFoy
Well, I don't know what came over me just now. I found myself pecking out my
credit card info on Riv's site for a new Saddlesack Medium in tan. I don't even
know how I settled on tan. Wait, yes I do - I flipped through the Group's photo
pool and noted that the bikes similar in paint to my Betty Foy looked bright
and lively with the tan; I felt the olive color looked heavy and separate from
the bike - like it would not complement my bike but rather compete for its own
attention. (Though on the orange or green bikes olive really was spectacular.)
Probably nobody else even understands what I'm prattling on about, which is why
I took the precaution of writing to Riv in the notes: "I chose the tan because
it brightened bikes similar in color to my Betty Foy and looked lively. If you
disagree and think olive is better, please call me and get me to come to my
senses."

Well, it's done. I have no great need for such a bag on my short commutes to my
sons' school, but I am a shameless bag hound of the worst kind. And there you
have it.

That brings me to school biking. I've mentioned before on here about the
traffic snarl at the school. It truly brings out the worst in people - even me!
Routinely, people park and block access to the sidewalk (yes, it's legal to for
bikes to ride on them here, and with 2 kids - 1 who is on a tiny 16 inch wheel
bike - I certainly use them) by parking across the sidewalk. I've started
leaving notes on cars, knocking on windows, calling traffic enforcement. Some
poor child will get hit after being forced off the sidewalk into the busy
street; it really is a matter of time. It's been very frustrating but then
today happened: I was stopped by a MOM on a BIKE! This is a brand new thing!
She lives a few houses away from me and decided she was going to bike commute
with her child (who is still on training wheels). She was riding a Lemond road
bike with drop bars and none of the Rivish accoutrements. She was admiring
things on my bike (mostly my dog) but maybe I can send Grant some new business.
If not, he'll just have to be happy with my reckless order from tonight. ;)
