More or less, and whether 2mm out of 32 should be called a 6% or a 12%
effect it is certainly 2mm and if that matters to you then it matters.
I tend to go overboard on wishing folks would provide more detail so maybe
I am nuts here, but I wish when tire widths were stated the rim they were
measured on was also given. I sort of wish the convention was to state bead
to bead separation with the tire flattened out instead of mounted width.

[RBW] Soma Weymouth 650b rim - initial impressions

2014-06-10 Thread Jim Bronson
This wheel was not meant for my Riv, but has been pressed into service due
to the cracks in my Synergy. It's a rear, 650b, 36h, laced to Deore XT
T780 hub, 135 spaced of course. Sapim double-butted spokes, 3x.

Initial thoughts:
-Super bling shiny!
-Seems wider than Synergy.
-Needed 22mm wide rim tape to cover the extra, non-spoke holes at the the
seam and at the air valve. Don't know what those holes are there for, I'm
guessing some sort of robotic assembly process, but it takes wider rim tape
to cover them because they are wider out than the spoke holes.
-Tires mount much straighter with less fuss than on the Synergy. I'm using
Compass LoupLoup Pass, in case anyone wanted to know. Of course, that
didn't keep my dumn arse from blowing it off the rim the first time I tried
to pump it up, I suspect that I had the tube pinched between the bead and
the rim. It exploded with a spectacular bang at 70psi, my wife was quite
alarmed. I was more careful the 2nd time around and it was fine.
-Braking was no different despite the non-machined sidewalls. I imagine
that it would be a different story in the rain. At any rate, I didn't have
to make any brake adjustments to accommodate the rim/wheel change, just
popped it in there and went on about my business.
-Rides fine, took it out for about 35 miles after work. Maybe a tad
stiffer laterally than the Synergy, my bike seemed to be just a tad more
solid when I was out of the saddle on a steep hill. But maybe I'm just
imagining things.

Obviously, 35 miles isn't enough to give a full evaluation, but so far I am
happy. The Weymouths are less expensive than some of the other options out
there like the Velocity rims. I got them at the Soma 20% off sale, after
discount they were $48 each I think. If it holds up over time I will
definitely give it two thumbs up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grand Bois tires, size discrepancy

2014-06-10 Thread Anne Paulson
So you're saying, then, that low-pressure tires compress not because the
air pressure inside them changes, but because the tire deforms in response
to a force and the air pressure inside it remains more or less the same.
You say it behaves like a spring and we should analyze it like a spring.

So then one would like a tall tire (with a lot of drop) because it would
have lots of room to deform and soak up bumps, but then then the tall tire
needs to be wide for good cornering. And one would like a tire with a
supple sidewall because that would also contribute to the tire deforming
instead of bouncing when it encounters bumps.

That sounds convincing to me.

But, to return to the issue of whether the Cypres is smaller than other
tires made by Panaracer that are called 32 mm tires: I say yes, because (1)
Panaracer marks Paselas as 32 mm tires and Cypres as 30 mm tires and (2)
when brand new, flat folded Paselas are wider than flat folded Cypreses.

Which is an "appeal to authority" and a "seems to work ok where we have
used it". Which is fine so far as it goes, but its not much to go by for
guessing how applicable either extrapolations of Berto's curves or the 15%
rule of thumb are outside the domain where we have experience using them.

I hope I don't come across as to critical. I have pulled the equation for
the regression fit of Berto's curves from the spreadsheet and like using
it. But I suspect I would do as well (practically speaking) if I just let
air out of the tires till they squished a good bit when I got on the bike,
and then just rode it and adjusted for feel.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grand Bois tires, size discrepancy

2014-06-10 Thread ted
The derivate of contact patch area with respect to "drop".

I think the support force is roughly psi times contact patch area. I think
that though the internal pressure may increase slightly that effect is
negligible because the change in tire volume is a tiny fraction of the
total. I think the spring rate is psi times delta area divided by delta
drop. I think the relationships between contact patch area, tire width and
drop are a bit complicated. I suspect spring rate dependence on width is
closer to linear than the width squared dependence that is implied by
assuming it varies with cross sectional area (which is what I think you are
suggesting). So for cush I think it is closer to a linear linear dependence.

For pinch flats I think you get a linear increase in spring rate from the
width and another linear increase in allowable deformation due to the hight
that goes with the width. So that would suggest a scale factor squared
dependance on that front.

My experience of late has been that I pick the pressure based on ride and
handling. Pinch flats just haven't been a problem for me. Of course I don't
assume that is the case for everybody.

[RBW] Re: Optimal tire pressure questions...

2014-06-10 Thread Jan Heine
Originally, the 15% drop came from the tire companies to whom Frank Berto
talked. So Frank then just tried to figure out how to get that value.

Our initial tire testing indicated that somewhere around 15% tire drop was
the point where performance and comfort were optimized. Since then, we
found that at least for supple tires, even lower pressures don't seem to
slow the bike down, so it matters even less.

However, even today, the 15% tire drop values from the chart are a good
starting point for experimenting with tire pressure...

[RBW] Question about installation of rear fender on Roadeo

2014-06-10 Thread Eric Peterson
I am installing some SKS fenders on my Roadeo and for the rear fender I am
puzzled by the long distance between the natural fender position and the
threaded hole just behind the BB.
What is the best way to span this distance?
I don't want to compromise the threaded rear fender attachment with a long
bolt, but I see no other way to securely fasten the fender there.
Pictures and advice?

Thanks,
Eric

Re: [RBW] Re: Grand Bois tires, size discrepancy

2014-06-10 Thread Anne Paulson
The effective spring rate is going to depend on volume, isn't it, because
the volume says how much air there is and that determines how much
compression there can be? And the contact patch is going to depend on
diameter, isn't it?

The derivative of the contact patch with respect to what?

When I asked Jan, he explained that he has a different system of

So, expect the Grand Bois tires to be narrower than other tires sold

It's 6% in diameter, but that makes 12% difference in volume, which is what
we care about.

That's about a 6% discrepancy, which certainly seems reasonable given

[RBW] Re: Grand Bois tires, size discrepancy

2014-06-10 Thread Garth

All Tires measure differently on different rims. Open Pro rims are only
19.5mm wide, whereas the Compass Grand Bois rims , which are likely what is
used to measure them, is 23mm. That difference will make the same tire
appear to be different widths .

Also, how one is measuring the tire varies. Just because one is using
digital calipers does not mean another person using the same calipers will
measure it the exact same way.

[RBW] Re: Optimal tire pressure questions...

2014-06-10 Thread ted
Though some sort of fixture is likely needed I doubt it would be all that
hard to rig up something adequate. Certainly measuring tire drop would be
less trouble than the roll down testing you have done. But I think the real
question is whats so special about 15% drop. I can't recall seeing any
supporting argument / evidence for it being optimal.

Re: [RBW] Grand Bois tires, size discrepancy

2014-06-10 Thread Tim Gavin
I have Grand Bois tires on two of my bikes, and they measure closer to the
widths they're listed as on the Compass site.

My Cerf Blue tires measure at 26 mm on Open Pros (as listed), which is good
because my Giordana can't fit a 700 x 28.

The Lierre tires even have 650 x 36 molded into the gumwall, but they
measure closer to 38 mm on Synergy rims on my Riv.

The tires may stretch a bit as you wear them in, and reach the full 32 mm
width.

Your narrower rim may factor in as well. Open Pro rims are 15 mm wide,
whereas the Grand Bois rims 23 mm wide, same as Synergy rims.

I appreciate that the measurement's on the Compass website are pretty
accurate, because it allowed me to fit the fattest tires possible in my
reach-limited frames.

And I greatly appreciate the ride and speed of the Grand Bois tires!

Curiously, on my bike the 700x30 Grand Bois Cypres is about 1.5% larger

is narrower than a Parigi-Roubaix 27mm on the same rim.)

[RBW] Old Steel

2014-06-10 Thread Michael Hechmer
I know there was a recent post about '60s & '70s bikes, and I don't want
to belabor some fine points, but

I took my '84 Trek 620 ( built from Reynolds 531C) out today for the first
time since bringing it back from Ca. last Nov. What a joy! I used this as
a commuter for many years but in retirement it has reemerged as a 650B
travel & go fast bike, with pari-moto tires. Great road manners, a
beautiful blend of stability and agility, comfort and speed. Pretty much
the same geo as my Ram.

Early on in this ride I encountered a small dog at the bottom of a hill,
but easily accelerated away from it. Later I needed to jump into a left
hand lane to get around an interstate entrance. Easy, just get on the
wheel of a pickup and go.

Sweet,
Michael

Terrific. I know I get well testy, when I can't ride for awhile.
 Enjoy the moment.

Your post reminds me of a funny story. I was a hospital chaplain for 13

of quality bike sop was in a serious bicycling accident and taken to the
ER, where he was told he needed immediate surgery on his hip. Asked if he
would like to call is wife he replied, "Hell no, she's no good at surgery,
call Claude (Dr. Nichols, head of orthopedic surgery). He's fine now.

Re: [RBW] synergy rims (again?)

2014-06-10 Thread Bruce Herbitter
I don't have as many miles as my downstate neighbor, MobileBill, but I just
went and looked and cannot find a single crack on either of my OC synergy
rear wheels. One has about 11,000 miles and the other about 5,000. Starting
to get a little brake pad wear, but not enough to merit any action on my
part.

I think Velocity would want to clear up your case quickly, especially
being your second OC rim. Good customer service would only benefit Velocity
and this group should be on their radar.

[RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)

2014-06-10 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Great news. Today, six weeks after my hip replacement, I've been cleared to
ride a real bicycle again. I've actually been on a stationary exercise
bicycle since four days after surgery with no problem, but they didn't want
me actually out and about until now.

The first bike I'll ride will be the Hunq as it has nice fat Big Ben tires
and gearing. I really want to hop on the Quickbeam, but am going to be
sensible and give myself the option of gears I can change without
dismounting.

I don't expect I'll be doing any long rides (20+ miles) immediately or
tacking major climbs, but at least I can get back to commuting and weekend
fun.

Today is the perfect day to be cleared as well. I'll get off work at 2:30
pm, go home to do laundry (it's my weekly scheduled time) while tuning up
the Hunq, then head out around 5:30 pm for an hour or so of ocean front
mellow riding. Sunset is 7:13 pm tonight so I've got plenty of time.

Tomorrow we'll get back to biking to work.

The doctor has counseled against really long rides (his idea of this and
mine are at odds), climbing hard, or week long touring till the end of
summer, but that's fine, I've no big bike trips planned this year. I'm
hopeful I can get in a couple of short camping trips locally though.

I've wanted to hop on a bike and at least go around the block before this,
but for once I followed instructions.

Aloha!

Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: synergy rims (again?)

2014-06-10 Thread Jim Bronson
My Synergy rear non-oc was the same, I've got cracking around 5 of the
eyelets and even though the rim runs perfectly straight and true and seems
in no danger of immanent failure, I just couldn't stand the noise anymore.
I was riding a 102K permanent through some very exclusive neighborhoods on
Sunday afternoon and it seemed like people in their yards noticed I was
coming by the creaking noises that accompanied me. Embarrasing.

I just had another 650b wheel built for a different bike that I've now put
on my Rivendell so I can ride it without the noise. I was still waiting on
the front hub for the other bike anyway so it's ok for now.

Trying to decide what to replace it with - obviously not another Synergy.
Not sure if I will use the same hub, it's 32h and I am 260 lbs or so.
There are some 650b Dyads floating around in 32 and 36h. Velocity also
makes the Atlas in polished silver in 32 and 36h. And Pacenti now makes
the SL23 in silver, so that might be an option. It's got more of an aero
profile though which I think is a bit ugly. That being said the DeepV has
always worked pretty well for me and it's got a similar profile.

Had a Salsa Delgado rim crack like that last year. Had been on for about 3
years. My weight and riding style is more to blame than anything when

[RBW] Re: Saddlebag strap failing after 2 rides

2014-06-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bummer! Have you felt for sharp adages in the saddle loop? It looks like a
shape edge cut happened from the inside/right side of the saddle loop. I'd
take a metal file to it and see how much smoother it could be made. A chain
saw sharpening round file would work well, if you have one.

I guess I'll keep an eye on my eyelets. I recently built up a Synergy 650b
OC rear rim. Twice, actually; I dented the first rim on a huge pavement
crack within the first week. That was totally my fault.

I'm 220# and I ride these wheels on gravel and commuting, in addition to
road touring. I went with the OC rim because it made for a strong, nearly
dishless wheel with the Phil FW hub.

I've got a ton o' clearance. More than enough room to fit a fender. Just

[RBW] Re: Advice Needed from Bike Campers

2014-06-10 Thread 'doc' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick,
My experience is that only the older Super Stretch/Super Spirals are
subject to leakage at the seams because they are elasticized, and even then
its after a few years of heavy use. I think the #1 bag I bought is a 2011,
which would be about right. My 2013 #3 Super Spiral has not leaked a
single feather. Either way, both bags are super comfortable and warm, and
if I can solve the seam issue on the #1, it will have been one of those
"too good to be true" deals that actually was. The only other bags I've
looked at are WM and FF...a bit pricey, but worth the cost if you talk to
hardcore cold weather campers. thx. doc.

Also, as long as we're on the subject of sleep systems, these down quilts
are handmade with top notch materials and about half the price of what they
would be from Montbell, WM, or any other high end MUSA manufacturer:
http://www.hammockgear.com
It's a boutique shop, longer wait times, but well worth it. These would
work just as well with ground systems (a Neo Air) as with hammocks. That
said, hammocks are frankly the perfect solution for bike touring -- and
lightweight backpacking. Here's a great intro, if you're not familiar with
hammocks: http://andrewskurka.com/2012/hammocks-advantages-disadvantages/

[RBW] Re: Optimal tire pressure questions...

2014-06-10 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I weigh 400 lbs and tend to run the fattest tires my bike will fit (40mm
Duremes right now) and I generally just run them 10psi less than the stated
max and they are fine. I've run them in the 60psi range with no problem
but probably wouldn't go any lower than that. This is primarily riding on
smooth surfaces.

I also have a set of 32mm tires and I usually run them at max pressure.

I'm not real conscientous about checking tire pressure and only air them up
when they are noticeably low and I've never had a pinch flat. There
probably aren't a lot of riders out there heavier than me so I would just
run them where they are comfortable. I can't imagine tires that are
dangerously low even being pleasurable to ride.

[RBW] Re: Optimal tire pressure questions...

2014-06-10 Thread Jan Heine
The minimum inflation values are pretty arbitrary. I run my Hetres at 35-45
psi... For the Compass tires, we don't list minimum inflation values,
because they are too confusing.

The maximum inflation really is the maximum safe pressure - don't exceed
it!

For the minimum, you can go lower. Once the tire really starts to deflect a
lot and washes out in corners, you are too low. Also, the casing threads
will start to break if you run pressures that are too low. You'll see it as
a pattern in the sidewall. If just one thread is broken (which usually
happens), the tire still is fine to ride... But this happens at
ridiculously low pressures. The one time to pay attention is you have a
flat. Don't ride it until you roll on the rim, otherwise, you'll break a
few threads in the casing.

Thanks to all for comments and advice.
Jim, I did remove the qr and cleaned, but no change. I'll replace it
entirely and see if that makes a difference.
The hairline cracks are still small -- not yet as extended as the ones on
my first rim -- but they are clearly developing spreading an inch or so
from a couple of eyelets in either direction. I also decided to check the
OC rims on the Betty, and I see them developing there as well.
Front synergy rims, by the way, show little signs of wear or trouble after
almost 19,000 miles.

[RBW] Re: Advice Needed from Bike Campers

2014-06-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
Based on the internets, MontBell is known for having seams open to leak
down with use.

RE: [RBW] How do I straighten my Brooks saddle nose?

2014-06-10 Thread Larry Powers
Could this be you? If several saddles have done the exact same thing could it
be that you are not symmetrical and the saddle is just breaking into fit the
way you are? I know that I do not set square on the bike and I actually need
to point the nose of the saddle slightly to the left of center to be
comfortable. I have not had the same issue you are seeing and I know that the
quality of these saddles is not what is was 10 years ago. But they are leather
and they do break in to fit the rider. If the rails are straight then maybe it
is you. Have someone ride behind you and see if they can see how you sit, if
your back is straight and hips parallel. If not it is no big deal other then
helping to explain how your bike need to be adjusted to fit you.

It has about a year of riding on it. Never got wet.Needs Proofhide?Adjustment
bolt tightening?
When I bought it, it had a slight curve to the nose, and I didn't want to make
a fuss and return it, but now I think it is getting worse and rubbing my right
thigh. Otherwise this has been a great saddle.
What is it with Brooks? I think I have bought 5 in the last few years, and I
think three have had either a curved nose, or the rivets aren't symmetrical, or
the adjustment bolt is crooked.

Velocity's customer service on this issue in the past has been outstanding.
