The weather is glum; nasty wind and a promise of rain but your photos really gave me an uplift just when i was wallowing in self pity. Re: [RBW] 8-speed Bleriot build question. MTB or Road derailers?
Sounds like very common Riv gearing. I use a long cage Campy Veloce 10 speed rear Der without trouble on cog sets of 7 - 9 speeds, using friction shifting. The long cage Ultegra that came on the Ram works similarly. My Saluki came with a Deore XT rear and it doesn't feel any different. All 3 bikes are triples up front. Och! George! I am so sorry to learn of your thrombosis and thyroid. Yowza! I am glad my photos can help you experience biking vicariously. I know that vicarious adventure is one of the great gifts to me when I have extended periods that I can't get out. In case it helps, here is a prayer of Thanksgiving I find wonderfully helpful for those times when despair or self pity trample on my soul: http://www.mindyourheadcoop.org/blog/?p=415. I find that the gift of shifting my attitude to happiness rather than despair is like shifting from 22mm tires at 100 psi to 38mm tires at 40 psi -- the road amazingly gets smoother and the journey more joyous. If I may, I'd like to include you in my prayers. May God startle you with joy! I have a 10 year old Sugino crank, on which the left arm has now come loose twice. The first time I attributed it to my error in not tightening it down after reinstalling. I'm giving it one more try after getting out my 3/8 ratchet arm and leaning on it; but I am not optimistic. I forgot to mention that I am thinking of doing it as a friction shifting build, which opens me up to any derailer that can handle a 32T rear cog. So I guess a Shimano CX70 up front, and that Shimano rear derailer mentioned above would work. I wonder how much weight savings they would be over Deore stuff. Not that it would matter, but no use adding more weight to drag up hills onto the bike. Before you start worrying about weight differences in derailleurs, you might consider whether you've optimized the weight of everything else you carry. Have you weighed your tools lately? [RBW] Re: 8-speed Bleriot build question. MTB or Road derailers?
I'm a bit of a derailer snob, so I understand your qualms about the basic Deore rear mech. My Heron runs a nice, light, silver mid-90's Deore XT, and another bike uses a lovely and rare US-made Precision Billet derailer from the same era. If you want a nice Shimano MTB rear derailer, you can't go wrong with XTR bits. The newest Dyna-Sys 10-speed parts might be a little too group-specific (and pricey), but anything before that will work fine with friction. Finding one on Ebay that hasn't been scratched-to-heck could be tough, though. For new, those MicroSHIFT mechs Riv sells are nice looking. Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA. Re: [RBW] Re: 8-speed Bleriot build question. MTB or Road derailers?
The 10 speed Shimano MTB Dyna-Sys parts aren't only group-specific, they are incompatible with road indexed shifters. The cable pull is different. Folks on here and elsewhere say to use a 9 speed MTB derailer if you want a 10 speed indexed setup. I'm using a long cage silver Chorus 10 speed (early '00s) on my Rivendell with an 11-30 9 speed Shimano cassette and Shimano bar end shifters and it's working fine with 46-36-26 chainrings in the front. The Chorus was rated to handle 29, so jumping to 30 doesn't seem like much of a stretch. I've thought about going 11-34 or even 12-36 on the back to try to get me up one particular hill on our local brevets that I have walked every time this year. But I feel this would require a MTB derailer, so I haven't done it yet. The new derailer I really like the looks of is the new Suntour XCE. It's basically a polished silver Microshift and it is pretty. But it comes at a premium, I've seen it online for around $100 whereas the Deore can be had for less than $50. I really want it though so maybe I'll sell some more stuff I'm not using and get it. Oh the Atlantis for sure. But there are a few factors working against it - much larger and heavier tires with a more aggressive tread, heavier rims, a dynamo hub, and about 15 pounds more weight to move along. My cross bike is built up to accelerate as easily as possible, so it was no surprise that they felt very different. Both great bikes, just built for different purposes. [RBW] All you need is a change in perspective
There are those days where at the beginning of the ride you start second guessing yourself. You don't think your fit enough for the ride or you don't think you brought enough clothes. Or you aren't looking forward to doing the same ride you've done a ton of times before. Lets say I was a combination of these three and on top of this I was filled with guilt for not spending fathers day with my father. I was close to canceling the ride. Good thing I didn't because there was a big group waiting for me at Ritual coffee. 13 people showed up. A few new ones, Brad, Brooks and Theresa, a couple regulars, Kurt, Emily, Tommy, Puck Brendan, a couple of not so regulars, special guest Boyz of the Hoods member, Irving; and two who was leaving on a tour down to Mexico Ely and Omar. Even though I planned the ride I had better folks leading most of it. Irving gracefully lead us to the top of sweeny ridge, Kurt took us to a new section that included sand, pump tracks and fences and Brendan showed the alternative route to taking HW1 to get to Devil's slide. I find it amazing to get new perspectives on rides I've done in the past. Even with all the crashing we still got home in one piece AND with enough time for father's day dinner. Glad I can count on my friends to keep me motivated to not only ride but to have fun while doing it. The crank arm is probably toast. Once it starts loosening while riding, usually means the tapers started rounding out. Even with more torque, it'll eventually work its way out again. [RBW] Re: Cranky Crank VO Replacement
Hi Michael, The first time it came off did the damage that allowed the second time it came off to happen more easily. The steel spindle rounded out the squarish aluminum hole in the crank. There are other nice cranks out there, but the Sugino XD is the most consistent, reliable crank I've ever run into. Even so, we'll intro a new crank in a year or two. Not worth waiting for, but it's a fact. On Wednesday, June 18, 2014 3:30:05 AM UTC-7, Michael Hechmer wrote: I have a 10 year old Sugino crank, on which the left arm has now come loose twice. [RBW] Re: Cranky Crank VO Replacement
That was my suspicion too, but the only alternative factor was that I stopped riding as soon as I sensed some looseness. I knocked on doors until I found an 8 mm allen wrench. I'm going to give it one more pop before writing it off. This bike has SS couplers, so the left crank gets removed regularly. I probably just didn't tighten it enough the last time I reinstalled it. I agree the XD 600 is a very reliable crank. But I live in a town with and ride a lot of dirt roads, and wet conditions (but much less since I retired and stopped commuting), so I have to take the crank apart a couple of times a year to throughly clean the middle and inner ring. At those times I end up cussing the hidden bolt and loose spacers. I have the Alpina dbl (48/34) sitting on my old Marinoni stage racing bike... in the basement, unused, but think the kind of riding I do on this bike calls for a triple. I have the DaVinci (actually made by White Ind) on both the Saluki and the tandem and really like them. At $220 plus rings, they are neither cheap nor crazy expensive. Until last year I never even thought about pinned rings but put them on the tandem and have been amazed at how well they shift. Tandems give notoriously poor front end shifting and a set of hi end rings really improved things. Pump track is a bike track that's mostly whoop-dee-doos. The idea being that you build momentum by pumping the bike over the humps rather than pedaling. Of course you gotta start out on top. [RBW] The Perfect Bag
Not yet, but we are getting closer. Like a lot of people on this list I have gone back and forth about front vs. rear bags. BTW, both my Saluki Ram are indifferent to either the Acorn bag in the front and the Barley Bag on the SQR behind the seat. So which to use? I like the convenience of the front bags. They open and close easily, and are right there when I strip off arm warmers or reach for a wind/rain break. But when I stop at a store or a cafe they are cumbersome to get off then back on the bike. I like the spaciousness of the big seat bags and the SQR is absolutely the fastest on and off the bike. When I was commuting I often would get it off the bike and be on my way much faster than guys could get there bad packs off. But the buckles on the Barley bag were annoying. It seemed like every time I finished buckling it up I remembered something else that needed to go in. Today we installed hidden releases under the buckles, so now the bags open quickly, even if they aren't right at my finger tips as I ride along. https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A255Z2WMJX49q Michael -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I just found out that they don't make the expedition with the stay's...according to Ben's cycle what you have was a temporary fix till they refined the stainless steel version which is just a large hoop attached to the saddle rails. IMO what you have is the way to go, as it allows a greater load and distributes that load between the rails ( a weak point IMO) and the seat stay's. ~Hugh “Life is like riding a bicycle. Re: [RBW] Re: 8-speed Bleriot build question. MTB or Road derailers?
The new derailer you referenced is from SunXCD. The actual name of the component is an indecipherable mass of letters and numbers, so I guess we just call it The SunXCD Rear Derailer. http://sunxcd.net/rearder/ On Wednesday, June 18, 2014 6:28:54 AM UTC-7, Jim Bronson wrote: The 10 speed Shimano MTB Dyna-Sys parts aren't only group-specific, they are incompatible with road indexed shifters. [RBW] Cranky Crank VO Replacement
I too dislike the hidden bolt on try XD 600. It seems like Sugino they made an aesthetic choice at the expense of creation of a technical problem Is there some other reason to have the crank arm leave the starfish at that orientation other than aesthetics? Also, have trouble getting the q factor narrow enough with the XD 600. Finally, I am sure this complaint is much less wide spread, but since I'm already on a roll you can't use bio-pace rings on the XD 600, or if it is possible it was too tricky (and inconvenient because of the hidden bolt) for me to figure out. I will say though that I have never owned a more sure footed, stable bike in my life, the 71 AHH handles great, climbs well and descends like a dream (even at 45 mph), definitely would be interested in comparing though, keep up the good work! I'm extremely interested in feedback from you and other tall riders, I'm just not sure a wheel size available for more than 10 years and now having new lighter tires available (thus online) make it esoteric. You can use 29 tubes in a 36 wheel by the way. Of course if you blow a tire in the wild, there's zero chance another rider will hand you a 36er tire, but I always take one spare in my bag on long touring rides. To really understand why a 700c or 29er bike even custom made (I had several made) is by definition unstable you will have to be able, like I did for years, to compare both bikes on the same path. Believe me, after riding my DirtySixer you will understand that you are just making it work on other 700c bikes as they are adaptations from regular bikes to our longer body dimension. They are not thought from the beginning for taller people than the belly curve of riders. Wheel size, geometry (wheel base etc.) and oversized tubing (even the handlebar diameter, at the grip) makes the DirtySixer a unique, safe and fun ride. Not only on trails (it's not a 100% mountain bike but rather 50/50 road/dirt) but over potholes, curbs, train tracks, sand or wet leaves thanks to bigger contact patch. Ps: stability problems on 700c bikes comes from wheel size, rims and tires width, head tube angle+ trail, rider position relative to the bike (or mass distribution) wheelbase, chain stays length, axle size... I hope to be able to go ride the DirtySixer with you some day in our fantastic playground that is the Marin headlands. :-) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] My Heron build
Enjoy! I bought my wife a Heron Road frame and built it up, surprising (even shocking) her for Christmas many moons ago. Maybe 18 years or something. The Heron replaced her 1993 XO-1 when it got run over while locked to a sign outside her workplace (a tragedy that still breaks my heart a little). It is a wonderful bike, actually the lightest bike in the house, and frequently when she is out for a ride some other cyclist will give her big props for it. The Heron was just a great bike and I am sad they didn't stick around longer, despite a lot of noble efforts but the various owners of the project. People say it's the design, not the material but IMHO 531 *is* magic. Best frame tubing ever. Thanks Grant and Ted, that bike has given my wife a lot of happy miles and made me into a really big hero one Christmas. I'm actually choking up (over both the demise of the XO-1 and her joy over the Heron). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
