[RBW] Re: Bar end vs. down tube shifting... What's your experience...

2014-12-16 Thread Joe Bernard
In my opinion DT shifters are for people who *really* like the look and
simplicity, then adapt to the shifting. I happen to be one of those
look/simplicity appreciators, but my attempt to get used to it a couple
years ago was a no-go. Friction shifting at the bar-ends is ridiculously
easy, and the extra work needed to reach down for on-the-tubers just wasn't
worth the trouble for me.

[RBW] It isn't winter yet

2014-12-16 Thread Glen
Normally around February Jim will chime in make a notice that the tone
isn't in keeping with the topic of this list.

Well it isn't even the Solstice and we have two threads that are beyond the
norm for this group.

The outright attack on the seller of the AHH is not in the spirit of this
group and the self righteous "I don't own a television" thread has nothing
to do with Rivendell bikes and those who ride them.

Please stop.

Go ride your bike or go skiing.

Thank you,

Glen

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs. down tube shifting... What's your experience...

2014-12-16 Thread dougP
Probably like many on this list, I grew up with DT shifting. Once I tried
bar ends, I liked them a lot better. After years with bar ends, I tried
DTs for a few months on my Atlantis. Not a difficult switch but went back
to bar ends. On the issue of interference points, I would occasionally
touch the front tire with DTs, and they are quite difficult off-road. OTH,
with bar ends I sometimes bump them at low speed when turning sharply.
Overall I prefer having the shifters on the bar, close at hand. Currently
my Atlantis is set-up with upright bars and thumb shifters and I like this
a lot.

Never done it before, and seems like the reach may make it more difficult and

What's your experience been with DT shifting?

Ha! Bill, I understand exactly how you feel. I've been working on a bike

Well I own 5 flat screen TVs a PS4, Gameboy, ipad, kindle fire and all the
other stuff we yes did fine without as kids but come on, they are fun
distractions. The issue is when they become all you do or all the kids do.
Everything is about moderation.

[RBW] Re: Dyno Rack Light with no rear rack?

2014-12-16 Thread stonehog
I've done this a couple times in a few different ways with the B&M Toplight
Line Plus:

1. I've scrounged my reflector attachment parts, and mounted the light on
the seat post this way: https://flic.kr/p/gJd3iB or
https://flic.kr/p/gJcXSG with other pics here:
 https://flic.kr/p/gKGwPy https://flic.kr/p/iRFEci https://flic.kr/p/iRH1iB
2. or mounted to the seat tube: https://flic.kr/p/jdQhEq
3. Use an "L" bracket and bend it carefully to attach at a braze-on mount
like this: https://flic.kr/p/aBEtGy
4. and if you have a basket and some washers? https://flic.kr/p/9h37zs

[RBW] Re: Issue with Phil cassette hub

2014-12-16 Thread Hiawatha Cyclery
I've found a lot of variability in freehub diameters among some of the
various boutique hub brands, ranging from impossibly oversized to
intolerably sloppy, even on the same model hub from one batch to the next.
Phil had some issues with pawls and/or the drive ring chipping and
breaking, which made for crunchy engagement and eventually full hub
destruction, but that's not the issue you're describing here. At first they
were fixing them for free (with the same lousy parts that failed
originally), but after they did the freehub redesign, it wasn't free
anymore.

Cheapest/quickest attempt at a solution is to try a different cassette.

Re: [RBW] Dyno Rack Light with no rear rack?

2014-12-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Do you mean the German spec (I think it's G spec) 2-bolt-mount rear light
as designed for, say, the rear plates of Tubus racks? If so, sure: a flat
metal strip drilled for the tail light bolts, but also drilled for other
bolts as needed to fix the strip to a fender, a seatpost clamp (you'd have
to bend the strip 90* to fit the most common seatpost light mounts), or
rack braze on (ditto).

When Chauncey Matthews was faced with the dilemma of designing my custom
rear rack for both these 2-bolt and the more typical US 1-bolt rear lights,
he drilled one hole at the center of the rack's rear tube and provided such
a strip. I'm presently using it to mount a dyno powered, German, 2-bolt
light to said rack.

Bill, you realize you're appealing to a tiny niche of an already small
niche? But what the heck, you thought it out & it does seem worthwhile.
Way back when, I just left enough cable slack so the FD would drop onto the
small ring somewhere around that same lever position. But that was in the
long gone (for me) days of double cranksets.

Have they gotten more obnoxious since then, or have I just become
sensitized to them from not having them?

There is a lot less money being spent of televised ads. Production quality
is way down.

Big money is in the cinema spots that then morph over to Youtube -
apparently there are people who actually search for and watch ads on
Youtube. Go figure.

DS,

Here are a two images of my hack. Different rear light, however it will
work with the Riv rear light your talking about. Also I mounted it at a
lower point on the Seat Stays due to the saddle bag but I could have
mounted it higher. I purchased flat aluminum bar stock for $6 at my local
Hardware store and used a bench vise to bend into the "L" bracket you see
in the pictures.

Have fun.

Re: [RBW] Re: I saw this article and thought of the PB Bikes debate

2014-12-16 Thread Jim Bronson
As for kids I don't have any but have some over at the house sometimes and
I find the precocious behavior displayed in much of children's specific
programs is pretty intolerable. There's no way I would accept any child
talking the way they do on some of these TV shows.

For me, I could not live without my DVR. I cannot stand commercials, and
yes I think they are more unbearable than ever. If it wasn't for DVR I
would pull the plug again, and go cable free, streaming only. But my wife
likes Oprah Winfrey Network, and I like the home improvement shows on
HGTV/DIY. So we filter what we have to endure by never watching anything
live. Maybe someday an Internet connection will be enough, but for now the
cable companies are something of a cartel, i.e., they have some of the
interesting content I want and can't get separately. If I could buy the
content I want on cable networks a-la-carte I would do so in a heartbeat.

On a side note, one of the great things about the older style of bikes is
that you can customize them a-la-carte. I was on a 600K brevet this last
weekend and someone who had a top of the line carbon fiber Felt with D/A
electronic shifting had his shifter quit working after he had a flat. I
surmise that something got knocked loose when he turned the bike over to
change the flat. At any rate he had to ride the rest of the first day and
all of the 2nd day - approximately 150 miles - with two gears, that being,
those in the front. I was needling him about getting a setup with shifter
cables, since I had a spare shift cable in my bag, but then I realized that
his bike probably doesn't even have provisioning to have shifter cables,
since I'm sure they build it as a proprietary integrated system with the
electronic shifting.

The guy is an extremely strong rider despite being over 65, so he was able
to take only having his two front gears in stride, and was helped by the
2nd day being a much flatter route east of Austin. But still it reminds me
of why I ride what I would consider a normal bike.

Electronic shifting is cool in theory, especially for IT guys like me, but
sometimes tried and true low tech methods are better. He told me
afterwards that he hooked his laptop to the derailer to troubleshoot. Um,
if you have to carry a laptop to troubleshoot, what's the point of having a
15 pound bike in the first place?

I might ride a bike with electronic shifting if I was doing one of those
ultra-racing type events with a car following me. Then, if the damn thing
breaks, I'd just grab my Rivendell off the top of the follow car.

But anyway, I digress...

If it were me, and I wasn't a saddlebag user, I'd probably fabricate a
mount that bolted either to the upper rack braze-ons (if present) or to the
seatpost binder bolt (this latter would be an L-shaped bracket).

If, on the other hand, you have fenders, I would install a Pixeo. I do not
think there is a taillight with more bang for the buck.

Great question, Anton. When I see ads I grew up with and thought nothing of
at the time, they seem obnoxious now. I suspect most of it is my
sensitivity threshold has greatly increased. This is a common experience I
have with all aspects of more minimal (simple) living. For example, I can't
fathom how I slept in a soft cushioned bed or sad in cushioned chairs (or
chairs of any type), as they instantly feel wrong since I've shifted to
floor living.

All good questions! I don't have a picture at a moment, but it is a
Cheviot, no saddlebags (everything is on a front rack, no rear storage),
and it is the Dyno Rear Rack light from rivbike.com:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ltd-20.htm

There are fenders (SKS/ESGE LongBoard Silver Fenders - P50) and rack
brazeons.

Also open to different rear dyno light suggestions if there is something
that is more apt for a seatpost, fender, or rack brazeon hookup.

Re: [RBW] Re: I saw this article and thought of the PB Bikes debate

2014-12-16 Thread Anton Tutter
Speaking of media, we also find that after living essentially ad-free since
2006 (as not only do we not have a TV, but we also only listen to college
radio stations of which there is an abundance with great programming in our
area), it's become unbearable listening to ads when spending holidays at
the in-laws. Have they gotten more obnoxious since then, or have I just
become sensitized to them from not having them?

Amen, Patrick. We've been TV-free since 2006, right after my second
daughter was born. Will never go back.

And the kids don't have phones, video games, or iPads. But they have more
bookshelves chock full of books than their parents do, and a big old

Re: [RBW] Re: I saw this article and thought of the PB Bikes debate

2014-12-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Precisely, Ron. And people can inadvertently promote childishness in their
children by accepting it rather than challenging it. I'm not saying that is
happening in any specific instance here -- but the commercialization of
Christmas, and specifically the direct marketing to kids via kids shows
that are nothing but marketing, makes it a very easy trap to fall into
without realizing. Christmas is a time of generosity and a huge part of the
joy of receiving is in knowing we've given as well so we understand what
went into the gifts we receive. The same is true for our kids. The more
they work and sacrifice to give to siblings, parents, and friends, the
deeper their joy with whatever they receive, whether it's the "must have
toy" or something else.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Dyno Rack Light with no rear rack?

2014-12-16 Thread DS
Anyone have a hack to attach a Dyno rear rack light to a fender, seatpost,
or rack brazeons without using the rear rack?

I currently have it on a Pletscher rear rack but I don't really use the
rack for anything else and would rather remove it from the bike and find a
different way to mount that rear dyno light. I'm not very inventive so
thought I'd ask here.

Two sets (one for the Quickbeam and one for the custom):

1) Quickbeam set:

Front - Schmidt SONdelux wide body laced to a 32 hole green Velocity A23 rim
Rear - Phil Wood double sided freewheel (green) laced to a 32 hole green

You may have guessed my Quickbeam is green.

2) Custom set:
Front - Chris King Classic Cross hub laced to a 32 hole silver Velocity A23

Rear - Chris King Classic Cross hub laced to an off-center 32 hole silver
Velocity A23 rim.

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Loup Loup Pass 650Bx38

2014-12-16 Thread Jim Bronson
The limiting factor right now on the Redwood is the 200mm cranks. I'm
scraping pretty often even with 700x32. But I do have an extra 650B
wheelset sitting around now that I sold my Soma GR.

Which brings me to the other limiting factor - time. I am working with a
contractor to put my house back together after a sewer line backup resulted
in flood remediation people tearing out flooring, baseboards, sheetrock and
insulation. It's also Christmas time. And, I'm trying to reach some
mileage/kilometer goals for the year, which demand time spent riding bikes,
not working on converting them to a different wheel size. So I'll keep
riding the Redwood as is for now.

I really do want a purpose built 650B frame - eventually. It probably
won't be a Rivendell, because I don't see a low trail 650B optimized frame
for very tall riders as something Grant has shown any signs of interest
towards. He uses the 650B for the smaller frames but usually the big ones
are 700C spec. Nor does he appear to be a fan of low trail. For my money
I'd probably lean towards a Boulder custom lugged or if I wanted more
versatility, a Elephant NFE. I suppose another custom Riv could be in the
offing but it's hard to justify the additional $1300 over a lugged Boulder,
they look really, really nice.

168 rpm at the crank isn't fun at all, except to boast about; and even then
it's not all that boast-worthy: others reach much higher r's pm. But
112-120 isn't hard at all to maintain -- I used to maintain that -- well,
104 -- 112 actually -- in flatland cruising back in the days when I was
young and supple and could maintain 20+ mph in my favorite 64-65" gear.
That was before riding fixed made me into a masher.

I don't know, it's hard for me to imagine the unabridged joy of a long

shifting with Microshift bar end, Deore M591-SGS derailer and HG50
cassette. This combination maxes out about 28-29 mph, which is fine for my
usage. Smallest gear of 28-34 has not had me walking as of yet.
(although, I don't count it out on the several 20% grades around here).

Re: [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again

2014-12-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
180 counting both feet (so half cranks,) is perfectly normal. At least in
the barefoot /minimalist running world, a cadence of 180 steps is normal.
On a bike, that's three strokes per second -- not hard to accomplish at
all. What seems insane to you about 168? I imagine on my QB I max out
around 220 or so and that's when I start coasting. But I've never used a
computer, just compared it with what I have counted, which is steps per
minute when running (I don't anymore, I was just curious where I was.
180-200 steps when running).

With abandon,
Patrick (We do care about speed and cadence and gearing so don't feel
despondent Patrick) Jones. Grin.

[RBW] FS: 62 Toyo Hunqapillar a.k.a. cosmic clunker _ Local Pickup (for now)

2014-12-16 Thread erik jensen
I'm selling my Toyo Hunqapillar: from the first run of frames. Grey and
red. Top quality build with the most radical of tube sets.

Here's a not-super-recent-but-good-enough-to-whet-appetites-photo.

Some chips, maybe 8. Certainly nothing major, well maintained in every way.
Currently sporting a rather wild assembly of parts, as any bike should.
Lots of good stuff. We can talk about what you'd like and you can leave
with what you need: right now it's albatrossed with a motorcycle lever and
a paul porteur lever (you can take the second one with it, should you want
a uniform look--where's the fun in that?). 1x9 kevin mounted shimano lever
with the second shifter waiting for a front derailer on the downtube. 2.25
shreddable sams with nothing more than a few hundo miles. I got a box of
parts and am flexible. Frame only cool too.

This is a special advance sale, preference given to bay area locals who can
come see the bike, talk about what they want, and leave happy. Easiest for
all parties involved.

Selling as my atlantis is my toyo touring bike, my nobillete-made protovelo
is my touring bike, and well my rackless hunqapillar is my lightly used
trail shredder which is often sidelined by my other two touring bikes as
they have racks. Were I not shedding my load, I would get some racks and
keep it. But I'm trying to think that 2 bikes is enough and that if I'm not
using it regularly (the case for the past couple years really) it should go.

Will consider trades for bluewater sailing gear or a 40w'ish vintage tube
amplifier -- let me know if you might have something but I won't go into
details here.

Get a legendary bike.

Thanks,

Erik Jensen
